Description

BOTTLE NECK ADAPTER AND CLOSURE SYSTEMBACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0001] Field of the Invention: Embodiments of the invention relate to bottle neck adapters and closures configured to mate with the bottle neck adapters, and in some cases to provide improved connections between a pump or dispenser and a bottle.

[0002] State of the Art: Pumps, closures, and dispensers are commonly attached to, or fitted on, bottles or containers of a product. Pumps and dispensers are operated to dispense a product from within the bottle or container and closures are often removed to provide access to a product within the bottle or container. Closure systems–and corresponding closure features on bottles and containers–are well known and have been used for years with pumps and dispensers.

[0003] Closures and closure systems for pumps and dispensers typically include a closure feature on a bottle or container and a corresponding closure feature on the pump or dispenser. The closure features may mate together to attach or seal the pump or dispenser to the container or bottle. In some cases, the closure is meant to be a permanent closure such that a pump or dispenser may not be removed after being assembled to a bottle or container. In other cases, the closure is configured to allow the pump or dispenser to be connected to and disconnected from a container or bottle repeatedly.

[0004] For example, dropper dispensers are designed to be connected to and removed from a container or bottle repeatedly. An example of such dropper dispenser or dropper assembly and the method of connection to a container or bottle is illustrated and described in publication WO2022 / 199514 (PCT application PCT / CN2022 / 081951 which is incorporated herein by reference) . As illustrated in that publication, a dropper assembly including a cap assembly (200) and a dropper (300) includes a closure (208) configured for tight connection with the top of a container 400 (400) . While the illustrated closure feature of the dropper assembly and the container shown in the publication includes threading to allow the dropper assembly to be screwed onto, and off, the container, other closure features may also be used. For example, a snap feature or bayonet closure could be used, allowing the dropper assembly to be assembled to and removed from the container.

[0005] While the closure system illustrated in WO2022 / 199514 allows a user to remove and reassemble the dropper assembly with the container, it has been found that in  doing so, there are times in which the rotational torque associated with the closure system may not be enough to fully raise and lower the support (206) in such a fashion that the dropper assembly works as desired. The issues may be associated with the method and angles used by a user to turn the dispenser assembly. The issues may also be a function of the different materials being used with the container–which is usually a glass container–and the closure which is made of a resin or plastic material. Thus, additional features to create additional torque or to improve the user experience with the dropper assembly is desired. It is also desirable to improve the connection system between the dropper assembly and a container.

[0006] BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0007] According to certain embodiments of the invention, a closure system used to connect a container to a dispenser, pump, cap, or other feature includes a container neck adapter attached to a container and a closure configured to be attached to and removed from the container neck adapter. In some embodiments of the invention, the closure may be screwed onto or off the container neck adapter using a threaded connection. In other embodiments, the closure may be connected and removed from the container neck adapter using a bayonet-type or snap-connection system.

[0008] In certain embodiments of the invention, a container used with the closure system includes a container neck, a container lip attached to the container neck and one or more anti-rotation features associated with the container lip, the container neck, or both the container lip and container neck. In various embodiments, the container lip includes a circumference or perimeter that is larger than the circumference or perimeter of the container neck such that a space is formed between the container lip and the container adjacent to the container neck. The closure systems of various embodiments of the invention may snap into or connect to the space formed between the container lip and the container.

[0010] A threaded connection feature may be included on an outer surface of the adapter closure sleeve and may be configured to mate with or connect to a closure of the invention. In some embodiments, the outer surface may include a bayonet connection feature or a snap-connection feature instead.

[0011] A collar sleeve may also extend off the rim deck in the same direction of the connection sleeve. The collar sleeve may be configured to mate with or seal against an interior surface of the container or an interior surface of the container neck and container lip when the container neck adapter is attached to the container. The collar sleeve may include one or more deformable rails capable of seating against the interior surfaces of the container to help retain the container neck adapter in fluid tight communication with the container.

[0012] One or more torque teeth may also be included on an outer surface of the connection sleeve. The one or more torque teeth may be configured to interact with a closure during the attachment, removal, or attachment and removal of a closure with the container neck adapter.

[0013] In various embodiments of the invention, a closure includes a closure adapter deck having a closure sleeve extending away from the closure adapter deck in a first direction and a dispenser sleeve extending away from the closure adapter deck in a second, opposite direction of the closure sleeve. One or more closure wings may be integrated with, or may extend off, an edge of the closure sleeve. Each of the one or more closure wings may include one or more wing teeth on an interior surface of the closure wings. The one or more wing teeth may interact with the one or more torque teeth on the container neck adapter as the closure is connected to, removed from, or both connected to and removed from the container neck adapter. An interior surface of the closure sleeve may include a connection feature configured to help connect the closure to the container neck adapter. In some instances, athreaded connection feature may be included. In other instances, a bayonet-type connection feature or snap-connection feature may be present on the interior surface of the closure sleeve.

[0014] A dispenser sleeve may be configured to connect to or be a part of a dispenser, pump, cap, or other component of a dispensing system that needs to be connected to a container. In some embodiments of the invention, the dispenser sleeve may connect the closure to other components of a dropper dispenser.

[0015] A tube connection sleeve may also extend off the closure adapter deck. In some embodiments, the tube connection sleeve may extend in the same direction as the closure sleeve. The tube connection sleeve may have an opening therethrough or may provide an opening through the closure adapter deck. The tube connection sleeve may be configured to connect to a dip tube, a dropper tube, or other component capable of extending into a container and providing a fluid path from an interior of the container into an interior space of the closure defined by the interior surface of the dispenser sleeve in combination with another component of a dispenser, such as a piston.

[0016] According to various embodiments of the invention, a closure system may be used with a dropper dispenser. In some such embodiments, a dropper dispenser may include an outer cover, an annular member moveable by rotation of the outer cover, a support in communication with the annular member, a piston rod, a piston attached to the piston rod and seated in an interior space formed by an upper surface of the closure adapter deck and an inner surface of the dispenser sleeve, a cap, and a spring. The outer cover or other component of the dropper dispenser may be connected to a closure of the present invention such that rotation of the outer cover engages and moves the closure to disengage from a container neck adapter connected to a container.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0029] According to embodiments of the invention, a closure system 100 includes a container neck adapter 110 and a closure 170. The container neck adapter 110 and closure 170 may mate together. The closure system 100 may be mounted to a bottle or container 900 as illustrated in FIG. 1.

[0030] A container 900 may be made of glass or of another desired material. For example, a glass container 900 used with various embodiments of the invention is illustrated in FIG. 2. The container 900 includes a container neck 910 and a container rim 920. The container rim 920 may extend off, and outwardly from, the top of the container neck 910. The container rim 920 creates a lip having a circumference or outer edge that is larger than the circumference or outer edge of the container neck 910. One or more anti-rotation features 925 may be formed on an outer surface of the container rim 920 or as part of the container rim 920 and the container neck 910. For example, FIG. 3 illustrates a close-up view of the container neck 910, container rim 920, and an anti-rotation feature 925 of a particular embodiment of the invention. The anti-rotation feature 925 illustrated includes vertical grooves and walls extending from the container lip 920 to a portion of the container 900. While FIG. 3 illustrates two anti-rotation features 925 on opposite sides of the container lip 920, it is understood that a single or multiple anti-rotation features 925 can be used with various embodiments of the invention.

[0031] An anti-rotation feature 925 according to various embodiments of the invention may include a plurality of vertical walls 926 and exterior walls 927 with the space  between the vertical walls 926 forming or defining grooves 928. Multiple vertical walls 926 and exterior walls 927 may be formed to create multiple grooves 928. The number of grooves 928 formed may vary or be different depending on the size of the container 900 or closure system being used. In various embodiments, the number of grooves 928 and the spacing of the vertical walls 926 and the exterior walls 927 may be optimized based on the amount of resistance required to retain a container neck adapter 110 on the container 900. In addition, the number of anti-rotation features 925 may be selected or formed based on the desired retention forces between the container neck adapter 110 and the container 900.

[0032] As shown in FIG. 3, the container neck 910 may have a smaller circumference or outer perimeter than the container rim 920, creating a lip or overhang to which a closure system 100 may be connected. The anti-rotation features 925 included on the container 900 may also include a lip, overhang, or indentation as illustrated in FIG. 3 which may further facilitate the connection of a closure system 100 to the container 900.

[0033] FIG. 4 illustrates a cross-sectional view of FIG. 1, showing the closure system 100 attached to a container 900. A container neck adapter 110 according to various embodiments of the invention is fixed to the container 900 about the container neck 910. Acontainer neck adapter 110 may include a rim deck 115 sitting on an upper surface of the container rim 920 and a connection sleeve 111 extending away from the rim deck 115 towards the container 900. A flange 112 extending inwardly from the connection sleeve 111 may seat in the lip or gap between the container rim 920 and the container neck 910 as illustrated in FIG. 4. The interaction of the flange 112 and connection sleeve 111 with the container neck 910 and container rim 920 may retain the container neck adapter 110 on the container 900.

[0034] A container neck adapter 110 according to various embodiments of the invention is illustrated in FIGs. 5 through 7. A container neck adapter 110 may include a rim deck 115 configured to sit upon an upper surface of the container rim 920. A connection sleeve 111 extends away from the rim deck 115 in a direction that would be towards a container 900 when the container neck adapter 110 is attached to a container 900. The connection sleeve 111 may terminate in a flange 112 that extends inwardly from the connection sleeve 111. A space between the flange 112 and the rim deck 115 may be configured to sit in the lip or overhang of the container 900 formed by the container neck 910 and the container rim 920 as illustrated in FIG. 4.

[0035] As visible in FIG. 6, a container neck adapter 110 may include one or more connection teeth 113 about an interior surface of the connection sleeve 111. The one or more  connection teeth 113 may be shaped and sized to fit into, mate with, or interact with an anti-rotation feature 925 of a container 900. When a container neck adapter 110 is snap fitted, rotated, or otherwise pushed over a container rim 920 to connect to the container 900, the one or more connection teeth 113 may be rotated into a position such that a connection tooth 113 fits into a groove 928 between the vertical walls 926 of the anti-rotation feature 925. The interaction of the one or more connection teeth 113 with an anti-rotation feature 925 of the container 900 prevents the rotation of the container neck adapter 110 about the container rim 920 or relative to the container 900. Thus, once the container neck adapter 110 is fitted on a container 900, the flange 112 helps prevent vertical movement of the container neck adapter 110 relative to the container 900 and the one or more connection teeth 113 interact with the one or more anti-rotation features 925 to prevent rotational movement of the container neck adapter 110 about the container 900.

[0036] An exterior surface of the connection sleeve 111 may include one or more torque teeth 114 as illustrated in FIGs. 5 through 7. The one or more torque teeth 114 may include a projection or step formed in the outer surface of the connection sleeve 111. The one or more torque teeth 114 may be configured to interact with a closure 170. As illustrated in FIG. 6, some embodiments of the invention may include two torque teeth 114; a first torque tooth on one side of the connection sleeve 111 and a second torque tooth on an opposite side of the connection sleeve 111.

[0037] A container neck adapter 110 according to embodiments of the invention may also include an adapter closure sleeve 130 extending away from the rim deck 115 in a direction opposite that of the connection sleeve 111 as illustrated in FIGs. 5 through 7. A connection mechanism to facilitate connection of a closure 170 to the container neck adapter 110 may be integrated with or configured with the adapter closure sleeve 130. For example, as illustrated in FIGs. 5 through 7, an adapter closure sleeve 130 may include a thread connection 132 extending off an outer surface of the adapter closure sleeve 130, the thread connection 132 configured to mate with or interact with a corresponding closure thread connection 182 on a closure 170.

[0038] A container neck adapter 110 may also include a collar sleeve 120 according to certain embodiments of the invention. As illustrated in FIGs. 5 through 7, a collar sleeve 120 may extend off a rim deck 115 in the same direction as the connection sleeve 111. A collar sleeve 120 may be configured to extend through an opening in the container 900 such that the collar sleeve 120 may mate with or seal against and inner surface of a container opening defined by an interior surface of the container neck 910 or container neck 910 and  interior surface of the container 900. As illustrated in FIG. 4, an exterior surface of the collar sleeve 120 seals against an interior surface of the container neck 910. One or more collar sleeve openings 122 may be formed in the walls of the collar sleeve 120 as illustrated. The collar sleeve 120 may also include one or more rails 124 formed in an outer surface of the collar sleeve 120 or formed by the one or more collar sleeve openings 122. In some instances, a rail 124 may extend outward of the outer surface of the collar sleeve 120. The one or more rails 124 may be deformable such that when a container neck adapter 110 is assembled onto a container 900, the one or more rails 124 flex to ensure a tight seal with an interior surface of the container 900. In this manner, deviations in the circumference, shape, or size of an opening in a glass container 900 may be accounted for and the container neck adapter 110 can be used with a varying set of container 900 opening sizes if they are not precise.

[0039] A closure 170 according to various embodiments of the invention is illustrated in FIGs. 8 through 10. As illustrated, a closure 170 may include a closure adapter deck 175 having a closure sleeve 180 extending away from the closure adapter deck 175 in a first direction and a dispenser sleeve 190 extending away from the closure adapter deck 175 in a second, opposite direction from the closure sleeve 180. A tube connection sleeve 199 may also extend away from the closure adapter deck 175, providing an opening through the closure adapter deck 175. The tube connection sleeve 199 may be configured to retain a dip tube, a dropper body, or other hollow carrier tube for transporting a product from an interior of the container 900 into an interior portion of the closure 170 or into a pump or dispenser associated with the closure 170.

[0040] As illustrated, a closure sleeve 180 may have an interior surface and an exterior surface. A closure thread connection 182 may be included on an interior surface of the closure sleeve 180 and configured to mate with or interact with a thread connection 132 of a container neck adapter 110. In other embodiments, an alternative connection system or features may be included on an interior surface of the closure sleeve 180 and configured to mate with or join with connection features included on a container neck adapter 110. For example, a bayonet-type connection system or snap connection system could be used to join or connect the closure 170 and container neck adapter 110.

[0041] A closure 170 according to various embodiments of the invention also includes one or more closure wings 185 extending off a portion of the closure sleeve 180 as illustrated in FIGs. 8 through 10. In some embodiments, a closure wing 185 may include a tab extending away from a bottom edge of the closure sleeve 180. An interior surface of a closure wing 185 may include one or more wing teeth 187 as illustrated in FIG. 8. The one  or more wing teeth 187 may be configured to mate with or engage the one or more torque teeth 114 on a container neck adapter 110 when the closure 170 is connected to or seated on the container neck adapter 110. For instance, when the closure 170 illustrated in FIGs. 8 through 10 is being connected to the container neck adapter 110 illustrated in FIGs. 5 through 7, and screwed downwardly over the container neck adapter 110, the one or more closure wings 185 pass over the one or more torque teeth 114 on the exterior surface of the connection sleeve 111. As the one or more wings 185 pass over the one or more torque teeth 114, the one or more wing teeth 187 are positioned to engage with the one or more torque teeth 114 during the removal of the closure 170 from the container neck adapter 110. During removal, the one or more wing teeth 187 engage with the one or more torque teeth 114, creating resistance to removal of the closure 170 from the container neck adapter 110, requiring a user to apply additional force or torque to overcome the engagement of the wing teeth 187 with the torque teeth 114.

[0042] According to various embodiments of the invention, a dispenser sleeve 190 may be configured to fit with or connect to a dispenser or pump to be used with the closure system 100 of the present invention. In some embodiments of the invention, a dispenser sleeve 190 may be incorporated with or connected to additional components of a dropper dispenser 800 as illustrated in FIG. 11. For example, a dropper dispenser 800 may include a dropper dispenser 800 such as that illustrated and described in WO2022 / 199514 attached to a container 900. In the present invention, the closure system 100–including the container neck adapter 110 and closure 170–are substituted for the closure (208) illustrated in WO2022 / 199514. Thus, the dropper dispenser 800 may include a container neck adapter 110 attached to a container 900 and a dropper dispensing device including a closure 170. The dropper dispenser 800 may also include a dropper 300 attached to the tube connection sleeve 199, a top cap 201, an outer cover 202, an annular member 203 secured to the outer cover 202, a piston rod 204 connected to the top cap 201, a piston 207 connected to the piston rod 204 and seated against an interior surface of the dispenser sleeve 190 to define a dispensing chamber 210 in communication with the dropper 300, a support 206 movable in a vertical direction relative to the annular member 203, and a deformable element 205 or spring.

[0043] According to various embodiments of the invention, removal of the dropper dispenser 800 from the container 900 involves the rotation of the outer cover 202 to release the closure 170 from the container neck adapter 110. As the outer cover 202 is rotated to remove the dropper dispenser 800, the one or more wing teeth 187 of the closure 170 interact with the one or more torque teeth 114 on the container neck adapter 110, requiring a user to  apply more torque or force to the dropper dispenser 800 to remove it from the container 900. The increased torque or force helps to ensure that the piston 207 draws product into the dispensing chamber 210 as the dropper dispenser 800 is removed from the container 900.

[0044] According to various embodiments of the invention, a closure system 100 may be used with a container 900 and a dispenser, pump, or other device that needs to be connected to the container 900. The closure 170 of the closure system 100 may be attached to or integrated with a dispenser, pump, or other device such that it may be removed and reattached to a container 900 having a container neck adapter 110 attached thereto. The use of the closure system 100 may assist with, or improve, the connection between the container 900 and a dispenser, pump, or other cap attached to the closure 170.

[0045] While the containers 900 illustrated and described with the various embodiments of the invention are glass containers or bottles, it is understood that containers or bottles made of other materials can also be used with the closure systems 100 of the present invention. For example, a container 900 may be made of plastic, resin, carbon fiber, metal, or other suitable material for holding a product to be used with a dispenser or closure.

[0046] Various embodiments of the closure system 100 of the present invention are described and illustrated for use with a dropper dispenser system 800. However, the closure system 100 described and illustrated herein may be used with other dispensing systems, pumps, or closures as desired. For example, a closure system 100 of the present invention may be incorporated and used with the fine mist pump, a trigger sprayer, a lotion pump, a soap pump, or any other dispenser. The closure system 100 is especially useful with dispensing systems where different materials may be used for a container 900 and the dispenser or closure portion of a dispenser.

[0047] Having thus described certain particular embodiments of the invention, it is understood that the invention defined by the appended claims is not to be limited by particular details set forth in the above description, as many apparent variations thereof are contemplated. Rather, the invention is limited only be the appended claims, which include within their scope all equivalent devices or methods which operate according to the principles of the invention as described.
