AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

There is a lack of effective biomarkers for the early diagnosis and prediction of pediatric cancers, which hinders the development of improved treatments and leads to serious health-related issues in cancer survivors.

Method used

The method involves determining the presence of autoantibodies against specific pediatric cancer-associated antigens or proteins in biological samples from subjects or their mothers during pregnancy or the peripartum period, using techniques such as indirect immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy.

Benefits of technology

This approach allows for the early detection and prediction of pediatric cancers, potentially improving survival chances and enabling the development of novel, non-toxic treatments by identifying biomarkers that can be used across various cancer types.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for detecting or predicting cancer, particularly paediatric cancer, in a subject, such as a foetal or paediatric subject. The method involves determining, from a biological sample obtained from the subject or the subject's mother during the peripartum period or during pregnancy, the presence of autoantibodies against a plurality of selected antigens or proteins which have been found to be associated with cancer (i.e. paediatric cancer-associated autoantigens). The invention also provides devices which may be used for diagnosis or prediction of cancers, particularly paediatric cancers.
