AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing ultrasonic surgical tools lack auxiliary functions that can be easily integrated to enhance their operational capabilities without compromising ergonomics or requiring frequent battery replacements.

Method used

An ultrasonic surgical tool system that includes an ultrasonic instrument with a tip for treating patient tissue, a driver coupled to the tip, and a powered auxiliary assembly that can be removably coupled to the instrument. The system uses a control console to source an AC drive signal with both a primary component for vibrating the tip and a secondary component for powering the auxiliary assembly.

Benefits of technology

The system enables the ultrasonic instrument to perform primary functions like tissue resection while also providing auxiliary functions such as navigation, temperature sensing, and tissue type identification, all without the need for additional power sources or complex wiring, thereby enhancing surgical efficiency and reducing operational interruptions.

Abstract

An ultrasonic tool system includes an ultrasonic instrument, a powered auxiliary assembly removably coupled to the ultrasonic instrument and configured to provide an auxiliary function relating to operation of the ultrasonic instrument, and a control console coupled to the ultrasonic instrument. The control console is configured to source an AC drive signal to the ultrasonic instrument, the AC drive signal including a first component at a first frequency for vibrating a tip of the ultrasonic instrument and a second component at a second frequency greater than the first frequency for powering the auxiliary assembly. The ultrasonic instrument is configured to vibrate the tip with the first component of the AC drive signal, and power the auxiliary assembly with the second component of the AC drive signal.
