Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: COMPOSITIONS BASED ON POLYAMIDES AND GLASS FIBERS AND THEIR USE IN THE SANITARY AND WATER SECTORS Technical field
[0001] The present invention relates to molding compositions based on polyamides and glass fibers and their use in the field of sanitation, transport or distribution of water, in particular drinking water, at a temperature less than or equal to 60°C. Prior art
[0002] Brass is a widely used material in the sanitary sector, but this material is expensive. Its use can also involve the release of heavy metals into water, particularly drinking water. For these reasons, brass is being replaced by plastic materials (such as PPSU, PVDF, PA).
[0003] Thus, application US 2010 / 0249307 describes polyamide compositions reinforced with glass fibers for use in the field of drinking water, said polyamide being a mixture of semi-crystalline aliphatic polyamide and amorphous transparent polyamide, in particular based on cycloaliphatic diamines such as 3,3'-dimethyl-4,4'-diamino-dicyclohexyl-methane (called BMACM, MACM or B), p-bis(aminocyclohexyl)-methane commonly (called PACM or P) and isophorone-diamine (called IPD).
[0004] Application US2010237271 describes polyamide compositions reinforced with glass fibers for use in the field of drinking water, said polyamide being a mixture of semi-crystalline aliphatic polyamide and amorphous transparent polyamide chosen from B9-36, B9-36 / P9-36, 12 / BI and 12 / BT.
[0005] International application WO 2018 / 011291 describes compositions comprising a polyamide and a condensation product of a phenol and a carbonyl compound.
[0006] None of these applications describes molding compositions based on long-chain aliphatic polyamides and glass fibers having improved mechanical properties at temperatures less than or equal to 60°C, in particular in terms of final strength or breaking stresses, before or after immersion in drinking water.
[0007] The present invention therefore relates to a molding composition, comprising by weight:
[0008] a) 20 to 60%, in particular from 20 to 50%, in particular 25 to 39.9% of at least one long-chain aliphatic polyamide having a number of carbon atoms per nitrogen atom greater than or equal to 9, in particular greater than or equal to 10,
[0009] said at least one polyamide having an inherent viscosity in solution of less than or equal to 1.3, in particular less than or equal to 1.25, as determined according to standard ISO 307: 2007 at a temperature of 20°C.
[0010] b) 40 to 75% of glass fibers, in particular 50 to 75%, in particular 60 to 70% of glass fibers, and
[0011] c) 0 to 5% by weight, preferably 0.1 to 5% by weight of at least one additive,
[0012] the sum of the proportions of each constituent of said composition being equal to 100%.
[0013] The inventors have therefore found that the selection of at least one long-chain aliphatic polyamide having a particular inherent viscosity in solution with a particular range of glass fibers makes it possible to constitute a composition which, after injection, has improved mechanical properties at temperatures less than or equal to 60°C, in particular in terms of strength in finishing or breaking stresses before or after immersion in drinking water.
[0014] The inherent viscosity in solution (iv) is determined according to ISO 307:2007 as amended in
[0015] that the solvent is m-cresol rather than sulfuric acid, and that the concentration is 0.5% by weight and that the temperature is 20°C.
[0016] A molding composition according to the invention is a composition transformed for example by injection, injection blow molding, expansion molding and rotational molding. Regarding aliphatic polyamide
[0017] The molding composition comprises from 20 to 60%, in particular from 20 to 50%, in particular 25 to 39.9% of at least one long-chain aliphatic polyamide having a number of carbon atoms per nitrogen atom greater than or equal to 9, in particular greater than or equal to 10.
[0018] The nomenclature used to define polyamides is described in the ISO 1874-1:2011 standard "Plastics - Polyamide (PA) materials for molding and extrusion - Part 1: Designation", in particular on page 3 (tables 1 and 2) and is well known to those skilled in the art.
[0019] The polyamide may be a homopolyamide or a copolyamide or a mixture thereof.
[0020] Advantageously, said polyamide is a semi-crystalline polyamide or copolyamide.
[0021] The expression “semi-crystalline”, within the meaning of the invention, designates a (co)polyamide which has a melting temperature (Tf) in DSC according to the ISO 11357-3:2013 standard, and an enthalpy of crystallization during the cooling step at a speed of 20K / min in DSC measured according to ISO 11357-3 of 2013 greater than 20 J / g, preferably greater than 30 J / g.
[0022] Said polyamide is derived from a repeating unit obtained by polycondensation:
[0023] of at least one amino acid in C9 to C[8, preferably in C10 to C[8, more preferably in C10 to C12, or
[0024] of at least one C9 to C18 lactam, preferably C10 to C18, more preferably C10 to C12, or
[0025] of at least one diamine Ca in C4-C36, preferably C6-Ci8, preferably C6-C12, more preferably C10-Ci2, with at least one dicarboxylic acid Cb in C4-C36, preferably C6-Ci8, preferably C6-Ci2, more preferably Ciq-Ci2,
[0026] or a mixture thereof,
[0027] provided that the number of carbon atoms per nitrogen atom of the repeating unit is greater than or equal to 9, in particular greater than or equal to 10.
[0028] Advantageously, the long-chain aliphatic polyamide is obtained by polycondensation:
[0029] of at least one amino acid in C9 to C18, preferably in C10 to C18, in particular in C10 to C12, or
[0030] of at least one C9 to C18 lactam, preferably C10 to C18, in particular C10 to C12.

[0032] A C9 to C18 lactam is notably lauryllactam.
[0033] Said at least one C4-C36 diamine Ca may in particular be chosen from 1,4-butanediamine, 1,5-pentamethylenediamine, 1,6-hexamethylenediamine, 1,7-heptamethyldiamine, 1,8-octamethyldiamine, 1,9-nonamethyldiamine, 1,10-decamethyldiamine, 1,11-undecamethyldiamine, 1,12-dodecamethyldiamine, 1,13-tridecamethyldiamine, 1,14-tetradecamethyldiamine, 1,16-hexadecamethyldiamine and 1,18-octadecamethyldiamine, octadecenediamine, eicosanediamine, docosanediamine and the diamines obtained from of fatty acids.
[0034] Advantageously, said at least one diamine Ca is C6-C18 and chosen from 1,6-hexamethylenediamine, 1,7-heptamethylediamine, 1,8-octamethylediamine, 1,9-nonamethylediamine, 1,10-decamethylediamine, 1,11-undecamethylediamine, 1,12-dodecamethylediamine, 1,13-tridecamethylediamine mine, 1,14-tetradecamethyldiamine, 1,16-hexadecamethyldiamine and 1,18-octadecamethyldiamine.
[0035] Said at least one Cb to C36 dicarboxylic acid may be chosen from succinic acid, glutaric acid, adipic acid, suberic acid, azelaic acid, sebacic acid, undecanedioic acid, dodecanedioic acid, brassylic acid, tetradecanedioic acid, pentadecanedioic acid, hexadecanedioic acid, octadecanedioic acid, octadecenediamine, eicosanediamine, docosanediamine and diamines obtained from fatty acids.
[0036] Advantageously, said at least one dicarboxylic acid Cb is C6 to C18 and is chosen from adipic acid, suberic acid, azelaic acid, sebacic acid, undecanedioic acid, dodecanedioic acid, brassylic acid, tetradecanedioic acid, pentadecanedioic acid, hexadecanedioic acid, octadecanedioic acid.
[0037] In particular, the long-chain aliphatic polyamide is chosen from:
[0038] polyamide 1010 (PA1010), polyamide 1012 (PA1012), polyamide 1212 (PA1012), polyamide 11 (PAU), polyamide 12 (PA12), or a mixture thereof or a copolyamide thereof.
[0039] Advantageously, the polyamide is in particular PA11 and PA12.
[0040] In one embodiment, said long chain aliphatic polyamide is a blend of two polyamides in a weight ratio range of 5 / 95 to 95 / 5.
[0041] Advantageously, said mixture is a mixture of two identical polyamides having the same number of carbon atoms per nitrogen atom but with an inherent viscosity in solution of one of the two polyamides greater than 1.3 but on the condition that the mixture meets the condition of having an inherent viscosity in solution less than or equal to 1.3, in particular less than or equal to 1.25. Regarding glass fibers
[0042] The glass fibers are present from 40% to 75%, in particular from 50 to 75%, in particular from 60 to 70% by weight relative to the total weight of the composition.
[0043] The glass fibers can be solid and / or hollow, advantageously they are solid.
[0044] The glass fibers are advantageously short.
[0045] The short glass fibers preferably have a length of between 2 and 13 mm, preferably 3 to 8 mm before implementing the compositions.
[0046] Advantageously, the short glass fibers have a fiber length of 120 to 350 pm.
[0047] This fiber length of 120 to 350 pm is measured on the compound.
[0048] The short glass fibers can be circular or non-circular in cross-section.
[0049] A fiber with a circular section is defined as a fiber having at any point on its circumference a distance equal to the center of the fiber and therefore represents a perfect or near-perfect circle.
[0050] Any glass fiber not having this perfect or almost perfect circle is therefore defined as a fiber with a non-circular section.
[0051] Examples of fibers with a non-circular cross-section, but not limited to, are non-circular fibers, for example, having an elliptical, oval or cocoon shape, star fibers, flake fibers, flat fibers, cruciforms, a polygon and a ring.
[0052] Fiberglass can be:
[0053] - either with a circular section of diameter between 4 μm and 25 μm, preferably between 4 and 3 pm.
[0054] - either with a non-circular section with an L / D ratio (L representing the largest dimension of the cross-section of the fiber and D the smallest dimension of the cross-section of said fiber) between 2 and 8, in particular between 2 and 4. L and D can be measured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
[0055] Advantageously, the glass fibers are circular. Regarding the additive
[0056] The at least one additive is optionally present from 0 to 5% by weight, in particular from 0.1 to 5%, relative to the total weight of the composition.
[0057] The additive is chosen from fillers, colorants, stabilizers, plasticizers, surfactants, nucleating agents, pigments, brighteners, antioxidants, lubricants, flame retardants, natural waxes, laser marking additives, and mixtures thereof.
[0058] For example, the stabilizer may be a UV stabilizer, an organic stabilizer or more generally a combination of organic stabilizers, such as a phenol-type antioxidant (for example of the type of irganox® 1010 from the company Ciba-BASF).
[0059] It would not be outside the scope of the invention to use a mixture of plasticizers.
[0060] By way of example, the fillers can be chosen from carbon black, talc, pigments, metal oxides (titanium oxide). Regarding the molding composition
[0061] Throughout the description, all percentages of the composition are indicated by weight.
[0062] The molding composition comprises by weight:
[0063] a) 20 to 60%, in particular from 20 to 50%, in particular 25 to 39.9% of at least one long-chain aliphatic polyamide having a number of carbon atoms per nitrogen atom greater than or equal to 9, in particular greater than or equal to 10,
[0064] said at least one polyamide having an inherent viscosity in solution less than or equal to 1.3, in particular less than or equal to 1.25, as determined according to standard ISO 307: 2007 at a temperature of 20°C.
[0065] b) 40 to 75% of glass fibers, in particular 50 to 75%, in particular 60 to 70% of glass fibers, and
[0066] c) 0 to 5% by weight, preferably 0.1 to 5% by weight of at least one additive,
[0067] the sum of the proportions of each constituent of said composition being equal to 100%,
[0068] excluding an amorphous polyamide and a microcrystalline polyamide.
[0069] An amorphous polyamide within the meaning of the invention designates an amorphous transparent polyamide having only a glass transition temperature (no melting temperature (Tf)), or a very slightly crystalline polyamide having a glass transition temperature and a melting point such that the crystallization enthalpy during the cooling step at a rate of 20K / min in differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measured according to the ISO 11357-3:2013 standard is less than 20 J / g. The glass transition temperature (Tg) measured by DSC at a heating rate of 20K / min according to the ISO 11357-2:2013 standard for these polyamides is greater than 75°C.
[0070] A microcrystalline polyamide within the meaning of the invention has a crystallization enthalpy during the cooling step at a rate of 20K / min in differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measured according to the ISO 11357-3:2013 standard is less than 20 J / g.
[0071] A microcrystalline polyamide is therefore excluded from said molding composition.
[0072] An amorphous polyamide is for example a polyamide based on at least one cycloaliphatic diamine such as MACM, PACM, and IPD.
[0073] An amorphous polyamide is therefore excluded from said molding composition.
[0074] A microcrystalline polyamide and an amorphous polyamide in a mixture are therefore excluded from said molding composition.
[0075] Advantageously, a polyamide other than an aliphatic polyamide, in particular semi-crystalline, is excluded from the composition.
[0076] Advantageously, a condensation product of a phenol and a carbonyl compound is excluded from the composition.
[0077] Advantageously, a polyamide other than an aliphatic polyamide, in particular semi-crystalline, and a condensation product of a phenol and a carbonyl compound are excluded from the composition.

[0080] said at least one polyamide having an inherent viscosity in solution less than or equal to 1.3, in particular less than or equal to 1.25, as determined according to standard ISO 307: 2007 at a temperature of 20°C.
[0081] b) 40 to 75% of glass fibers, in particular 50 to 75%, in particular 60 to 70% of glass fibers, and

[0083] the sum of the proportions of each constituent of said composition being equal to 100%.
[0084] It is quite obvious that when the composition is “made up of”, the exclusions no longer have any place since the composition can only contain the constituents a), b) and c).

[0151] The compositions based on PAU and PA12 were implemented by compounding on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with a diameter of 40 mm with a flat temperature profile (T°) at 250°C. The screw speed is 300 rpm and the flow rate is 100 kg / h.
[0152] The semi-crystalline aliphatic polyamide and possibly the additives are added to the main hopper.
[0153] The compositions were then molded on an injection press (Engel brand) at a set temperature of 260°C and a mold temperature of 70°C in the form of dumbbells in order to study the properties of the compositions according to the standards below.

[0155] The breaking stress was also measured at 23°C and 60°C according to the same ISO 527-1: 2012 standard. The machine used is of the INSTRON 5966 type. The crosshead speed was set at 1 mm / min for the modulus measurement and 5 mm / min for the stress measurement.
[0156] The resistance to the fining was tested on type A specimens, at 60°C under constant stress according to the ISO899-1:2017 standard.
[0157] The samples were tested either dry or after immersion in drinking water at 90°C.
