Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: Automotive bumper skin assembly with mounting clip
[0001] The invention relates to a motor vehicle bumper skin assembly. More specifically, the invention deals with the fastening of a motor vehicle bumper skin assembly. The invention also relates to a motor vehicle with a bumper skin assembly.
[0002] A vehicle bumper system must meet different requirements depending on the speed of the impacts it will absorb. For example, at an impact speed of 50 km / h, the bumper system absorbs impact energy using a dedicated shock absorber. The shock absorber deforms irreversibly to protect the vehicle's structure and its passengers. Following the impact, the shock absorber must be replaced, as must certain other parts of the bumper system.
[0003] In contrast, for a low-speed impact, the bumper system is designed to absorb the impact through plastic deformation, thus eliminating the need for subsequent repairs. Low speed refers to an impact at a speed of 10 km / h or less. During such an impact, the bumper skin deforms elastically upon contact with the obstacle, then returns to its original position without any permanent deformation remaining after the obstacle responsible for the impact has moved away.
[0004] Around the bumper skin, the vehicle body has exterior panels that complete the outer envelope. Some of these panels are integrated with vehicle openings, or are directly part of the vehicle's structure. The bumper skin is precisely positioned relative to these exterior panels to refine the separation gaps. Controlling the geometry of these gaps contributes to the perceived quality of the vehicle.
[0005] The bumper system comprises a bumper skin assembly with bumper clips. These clips are pre-mounted in specific grooves in the bumper skin assembly and then inserted into additional mounting means of the structure. However, during transport or certain handling operations, bumper clips sometimes fall out. These lost clips must then be replaced. Such a replacement requires additional supplies and increases assembly time. Furthermore, a check for missing clips must be performed, which again generates significant costs in the context of high-volume production.
[0006] Systems for positioning and / or retaining a clip on a panel are known in the prior art. For example, document EP3337692_B1 describes a motor vehicle comprising a door trim panel. The plastic trim panel includes a fastening device for a metal sheet. The fastening device has a tower at the top of which appears an opening formed by a mounting slot for a retaining clip. The top of the tower has two bumps, one on either side of the slot. However, the retaining clip is not retained and can fall from the slot during assembly.
[0007] US20140284962_Al discloses a motor vehicle with a door fitted with an inner panel. The inner panel is attached to the door frame by means of a clip engaged in a notch. The panel has a clip retention section in which the notch is formed, and has clip retention arms at the entrance of the notch. The solution proposed by this document is not satisfactory because the elongation of the arms weakens them to such an extent that they can break during clip installation. These arms are therefore incompatible with a bumper application, which must withstand impacts. US20150337882_Al shows a motor vehicle with a door fitted with an inner panel attached by a clip with an oblong base. The oblong base has flexible side wings providing an anti-detachment function. The inner panel has a notch whose entry edge has retention columns. Each retaining post has an inclined face on the notch entry side and a vertical face on the notch bottom side. The clip's oblong base is configured to pass between the retaining claws in a predefined orientation where the side wings slide against the inclined faces of the retaining post, deforming as they do so. After insertion, the side wings butt against the vertical faces, thus ensuring secure retention. This solution is unsatisfactory because it requires a specific orientation for the clip to be inserted. Manufacturing the clip is complex due to its shape. The side wings remain fragile protrusions, susceptible to breakage during installation or from vehicle vibrations. This solution is not suitable for the separability and / or plastic deformation requirements that a bumper must meet.
[0008] Document FR2939853_B1 describes a motor vehicle with a bumper attached by means of a retaining structure and a fastening element. The fastening element comprises an anchor foot and a portion for attaching to a support structure. The support structure has a lateral opening forming a notch. This notch acts as a stop to prevent the anchor foot from being unintentionally removed. The lateral opening is configured to allow the anchor foot to pass through when the fastening element is inserted into the notch only when this insertion is performed following a determined trajectory not parallel to the support wall. The upper edge of the front wall has a projection forming a stop preventing the unintentional removal of the anchor foot.
[0009] However, the stop also requires a specific movement to insert the fastening element into the notch. The protrusion forming the stop necessitates the presence of the front wall, which constrains the injection of the retaining structure. In the event of a collision between the vehicle and the bumper, the protrusion or the front wall may break or deform, such that the retention function is no longer satisfactorily ensured.
[0010] The invention aims to address at least one of the problems or drawbacks encountered in the prior art. In particular, the invention aims to provide a bumper skin assembly that optimizes the compactness and retention of a fastener. The invention also aims to provide a bumper skin assembly that optimizes the compactness and retention of a fastener, while remaining compatible with the robustness and repairability requirements inherent to a bumper skin. [0041] [Fig.6] The [Fig.6] is a section of the [Fig.5] along the VLVI axis.
[0042] In the following description, the term "include" is synonymous with "include" and is not limiting in that it permits the presence of other elements in the motor vehicle or other steps in the process to which it relates. It is understood that the term "include" includes the terms "consist of." The terms "external" and "internal" shall respectively designate what is directed outward from the vehicle and inward from the vehicle.
[0043] In this description, the terms "longitudinal," "longitudinally," "transverse," and "transversely" are used with respect to the vehicle's frame of reference in the mounting configuration. The term "longitudinal" refers to the principal direction of travel of the vehicle. The term "transverse" refers to a direction perpendicular to the principal direction of travel of the vehicle. The term "front" refers to the principal direction of travel of the vehicle. The term "rear" refers to the opposite of the front of the vehicle. The X-axis represents the longitudinal direction, the Y-axis represents the transverse direction, and the Z-axis represents the vertical direction.
[0044] In this description, the ranges of values include the bounds that delimit them.
[0045] Throughout the description, the different figures use the same reference signs to designate identical or similar entities.
[0046] Figure 1 represents a motor vehicle 10 according to the invention. The motor vehicle 10 comprises at least one engine (not shown) adapted to drive said motor vehicle 10.
[0047] The motor vehicle 10 comprises a structure 12, also called the body. The structure 12 partially forms the body 14 of the vehicle at the roof, front fenders, and C-pillars. The body 14 forms the external shell of the motor vehicle 10.
[0048] The motor vehicle 10 further comprises a bumper skin assembly 16. The bumper skin assembly 16 is adapted to withstand impacts at speeds up to 10 km / h, preferably up to 16 km / s, without requiring the replacement of specific vehicle parts. The bumper skin assembly 16 includes a bumper skin 18. The bumper skin 18 comprises a layer locally covering the vehicle structure as well as certain components, such as shock absorbers.
[0049] The bumper skin assembly 16 also includes a support 20. The support 20 is an intermediate piece between the bumper skin 18 and the structure 12. The support 20 is a bumper skin adapter. The bumper skin 18 is made of a plastic or composite material, for example, it includes polypropylene. In the illustrated embodiment, the bumper skin 18 is a rear bumper skin. It includes lateral areas that laterally overlap the structure 12. The rear skin can extend to the wheel arches. The invention also considers an application to a front bumper.
[0050] Figure 2 shows a bumper skin assembly 16 of a motor vehicle, viewed from the inside. The motor vehicle may correspond to the one shown in relation to Figure 1. The vehicle's structure is not shown for clarity. The bumper skin 18 may be formed from several parts attached to one another, and their combination may extend over the entire width of the motor vehicle.
[0051] The bumper skin assembly 16 includes a fastening device 22 for attachment to the vehicle structure. The fastening device 22 comprises a fastening portion with a first surface 24; a retaining notch 26 formed in the first surface 24; and a fastening element (not shown). The fastening device 22 forms a fastening area for attaching the bumper skin to the vehicle structure.
[0052] The fastening element is designed to be inserted and held in the retaining notch 26. The fastening element is also suitable for being attached to the structure of the motor vehicle; for example, to a part of the body. Thus, the fastening element secures the bumper skin 18 to the vehicle structure. The motor vehicle advantageously includes a rear structure with an opening. This opening receives the fastening element for attaching the bumper skin 18.
[0053] The bumper skin support 20 is optionally inserted transversely between the bumper skin 18 and the vehicle structure. It forms a support frame for the bumper skin 18. The bumper skin 18 is attached to the support 20 at various points, which allows for the distribution of the skin's attachment areas. Skin deformation is prevented, and its positioning is more precise, particularly with respect to the structure. The perceived quality is optimized.
[0054] The support 20 may include a stud 23. The stud 23 is also called a recess. It is hollow. Its apex is formed by the first surface 24. This stud 23 allows for a transverse offset between the bumper skin 18 and the structure. The support 20 spans most of the height of the bumper skin 18, preferably over substantially its entire height. It reinforces and supports the skin over substantially its entire height.
[0055] According to one embodiment of the invention, the retaining notch 26 is formed in the support 20. This solution improves positioning accuracy and reduces skin deformations.
[0056] According to an alternative embodiment of the invention, the fastening portion and the bumper skin are made from a single piece of material. This solution optimizes manufacturing and assembly costs since the number of parts and fastening interfaces is streamlined.
[0057] The retaining notch 26 has an opening facing the front of the motor vehicle. Thanks to this design, in the event of a low-speed impact, the fastener remains in the retaining notch 26 without the bumper skin assembly coming loose. Low speed is defined as a speed below 16 km / h, or 10 km / h. At significantly higher speeds, the fastener breaks and acts as a fusible link. This breakage prevents damage to other parts, such as the support 20 or the bumper skin 18.
[0058] Figure 3 shows an enlargement of the bumper skin assembly 16, at the level of the fastening device 22. The bumper skin is not shown for clarity. The bumper skin assembly 16 is similar or identical to that described in relation to Figure 1 and / or Figure 2.
[0059] The stud 23 forms a housing. It has several walls defining a hollow internal volume. This hollow allows for the mounting of the fastening element 30. The fastening element 30 can be a clip. It can be referred to as fastening clips. The retaining notch 26 optionally forms an insertion notch for the fastener. It provides a passage for an operator or a robot to insert the fastener 30 into the fastener 22.
[0060] The fastening element 30 includes a base 32 against the first surface 24. This support maintains the orientation of the fastening element 30 relative to the support 20. The fastening element 30 is held in the retaining notch 26. It also has a foot (not visible), behind the first surface 24. The retaining notch 26 is located at the free end of the stud 23. The foot provides retention and positioning of the fastening element 30. The fastening element 30 further includes a fastening head 34. The fastening head 34 is intended to be inserted into the fastening hole of the structure in order to lock the bumper skin.
[0061] The first surface 24 is generally flat. It includes at least one protrusion 40, preferably at least two protrusions 40. The protrusions project from the first surface 24. They form obstacles capable of contacting the base so as to prevent the fastening element 30 from moving out of the retaining notch 26. The protrusions 40 are at a distance from the fastening element 30, preferably from the base 32. This distance is provided when the fastening element 30 is held in its predefined position in the retaining notch 26. Each protrusion generally forms a raised feature, for example, capable of forming a stop retaining or braking the base 32.
[0062] Figure 4 is similar to Figure 3. However, these figures differ in that the fastening element is not shown for the sake of clarity. The recess of the stud 23 is visible in the absence of the base of the fastening element.
[0063] The retaining notch 26 includes a bottom section 42 with positioning means 44 for the fastening element (not shown). The positioning means 44 allow the base to be kept away from the protrusions 40. For example, the positioning means 44 include a narrowing 46. The narrowing 46 forms an area of minimum width, for example, the vertical width of the retaining notch 26. Along the retaining notch 26, at least one or each protrusion is kept away from the positioning means 44.
[0064] The retaining notch 26 comprises an inner edge 48, preferably two opposing inner edges 48. The inner edges 48 are inclined relative to each other. At least one or each protrusion 40 extends from the associated inner edge 48.
[0065] The fastening device 22 includes a plate 50 forming the first surface 24. It also forms a free end of the bumper skin assembly 16. The plate 50 may be a slotted plate. The retaining notch 26 is formed in the plate 50, in particular over its entire thickness. The protrusions 40 include a A first protrusion and a second protrusion. They are formed on plate 50 and are symmetrical with respect to the retaining notch. They may have identical, similar or different shapes.
[0066] The protrusions 40 form thickenings on the plate 50. Thus, their addition does not weaken the fastening device 22. On the contrary, it locally increases rigidity. Thus, the protrusions 40 according to the invention preserve strength and contribute to the durability of the entire bumper skin 16.
[0067] Figure 5 shows a plan view of the first surface 24 on which the protrusion(s) 40 are formed. For clarity, the following description will focus on one of the protrusions 40 of the bumper skin assembly 16 (partially shown). However, it applies to each protrusion 40. The fastening element 30 is shown in dashed lines, and its base 64 is also visible.
[0068] The retaining notch 26 comprises a base 58 and an entry section 60 opposite the base 58. The entry section 60 can be characterized by a continuous narrowing towards the base 58. The entry section 60 has a reduction in width towards the base 58. The protrusion 40 is located at the level of the entry section 60 in order to reduce contact with the base 32 and thus wear on the fastening element 30.
[0069] The protrusion 40 has an oblong shape, for example a rectangular shape, with a main elongation 52. It can form a pyramid. The protrusion has a bottom facet 56 facing the bottom 58, a notch facet 57 facing the notch 26. The bottom facet 56 is adjacent to a notch facet 57, and opposite an entry facet 55. When the fastening element 30 is inserted, the base 32 comes into contact with the entry facet 55. Then the base 32 slides and rubs against the protrusion 40 until it presses against the bottom facet 56. When the fastening element 30 is inserted into the notch 26, the latter deforms. The base can move away from foot 64. The trunnion can extend. Simultaneously, protrusion 40 compresses. This deformation simplifies the assembly while maintaining the retention of the fastener.
[0070] The retaining notch 26 includes an insertion direction 54 which is inclined at a first angle A, between 30° and 60°, relative to the main elongation 52. The values of the first angle A allow for tangency between the base 32 and the bottom facet 56 of the protrusion 40 in the event of contact. In the event of contact, wear is reduced and the bumper skin assembly 16 is more durable.
[0071] The positioning means 44 form a separation between the bottom section 42 and the entry zone 60. The positioning means 44 are configured so as to maintain the fixing element 30 in the retaining notch 26. They also position the base 32 at a distance from the protrusion 40, preferably against the bottom 58. The bottom can be a geometric point, opposite the entry.
[0072] The retaining notch 26 comprises two opposing internal edges 48, each associated with one of the protrusions 40. The internal edges 48 border the protrusions 40. This aspect increases the opening of the retaining notch 26, while optimizing the blocking offered by each protrusion 40.
[0073] The fastening device 22 includes a separation distance DS between the protrusions 40. The separation distance DS passes through, or spans, the retaining notch 26. The base 32 includes a retaining surface bearing against the first surface 24. The base 32, in particular the retaining surface, has a width L greater than the separation distance DS. The width L is preferably a minimum width of the retaining surface 24. The base 32 is circular. The width L corresponds to its diameter. During the mounting of the fastening element 30, the base 32 leaves the protrusion tangent to the bottom facet 56.
[0074] Figure 6 shows a cross-section of the fastening device 22 through one of the protrusions 40. The cross-section is along the VLVI axis drawn in Figure 5. The cross-section passes through an axis of symmetry of the fastening element 30, namely its fastening direction 68. The fastening device 22 of the bumper skin assembly 16 is similar or identical to those shown in relation to the preceding figures.
[0075] The protrusion 40 forms a raised area on the first surface 24, specifically a transverse raised area. It creates a raised feature, like a bump. For example, the height of the protrusion 40 is between 1.00 mm and 1.50 mm. In the event of a collision, the fastening element 30, more precisely its base 32, may come into contact with the protrusion 40. Thanks to its raised surface, the protrusion 40 is more robust and more resistant to impact. The risk of breakage or detachment of the protrusion is reduced. This feature is beneficial in the context of the bumper skin, which is exposed to collisions.
[0076] The fastening element 30 includes a trunnion 62 housed in the retaining notch 26. The trunnion 62 has a length equal to the thickness of the plate 50. The length of the trunnion 62 is equal to the spacing between the base 32 and the foot 64. The head 34 is shown as fixed to the structure 12 of the motor vehicle. For example, the structure 12 is a rear structure of the vehicle and includes an opening 66 into which the head 34 is inserted. The head 34 has a widening to ensure positive contact by material engagement. The fastening element 32 includes a fastening direction 68 arranged along the transverse direction, i.e., along the Y-axis. The head 34 is inserted into the opening 66 along the fastening direction 68, which is also the direction in which the fastening element provides retention.
[0077] In addition, thanks to each protrusion 40, the tilting of the fastening element 30 is limited. The tilting considered is an inclination between the Y-axis and the fastening direction 68. The protrusion thus has an anti-rotation function.
[0078] The retaining notch 26 is inserted between the base 32 and the foot 64. The foot 64 is also referred to as the counter-base. The plate 50 is held between the retaining surface 70 of the base 32 and the head 34. The retaining surface 70 may be annular in shape. It is flat and parallel to the first surface 24.
[0079] The protrusion 40 includes its bottom facet 56 oriented towards the fastening element 30. Said bottom facet 56 is inclined relative to the first surface 24 at a second angle B between 20° and 70°, preferably between 30° and 60°. This angle makes the protrusion 40 less aggressive towards the base 32, and vice versa. In case of contact, friction and wear will be reduced. The risk of the protrusion 40 being worn away is reduced. The protrusion performs its safety locking function for a longer period.
[0080] The fastening device 22 includes a direction perpendicular to the first surface 24. The perpendicular direction can be arranged along the transverse direction, i.e. along the Y axis. The bottom facet 56, which is opposite the fastening element 32, is inclined with respect to the perpendicular direction, i.e. with respect to the Y axis. This inclination can be between 30° and 60°.
