Description

Title of the invention: Vehicle comprising a fuel cell cooling and temperature maintenance system

[0001] The present invention relates to a vehicle, in particular a railway vehicle, comprising:

[0002] - an electricity production system comprising at least one fuel cell, And

[0003] - a fuel cell cooling system comprising a ca- fluid heat transfer fluid and at least one suitable heat exchanger to perform heat exchange between the heat transfer fluid and the outside atmosphere to cool the heat transfer fluid.

[0004] The invention also relates to a method implementing the vehicle, in particular in a normal operating configuration, in which the electricity production system produces electricity and the fuel cell is cooled by the cooling system.

[0005] It is known that fuel cells, in normal operation, produce not only electricity, but also heat removed for example by heat exchange with a heat transfer fluid itself then cooled in an exchanger.

[0006] Generally speaking, regardless of the technology or nature of current fuel cells, they can only deliver electrical power when they reach a certain minimum temperature, for example around 5°C. Below this temperature, there is a risk of damaging the membranes or reducing the lifespan of the fuel cells.

[0007] Thus, following prolonged storage of a fuel cell in a low temperature environment, for example during vehicle immobilization outdoors on a winter night, fuel cells are preheated and maintained at temperature, generally using the heat transfer fluid heated by auxiliary batteries or more rarely by an external power source.

[0008] Preheating and maintaining temperature in all cases involve energy consumption. In addition, any auxiliary batteries must be on board and their power is limited, especially when cold.

[0009] Preheating therefore takes a certain amount of time, typically between 30 minutes and one hour, depending on the characteristics of the circuit to be heated and the power of the heating elements installed. The energy required corresponds, for example, to 15 kW for one hour for a regional train.

[0010] One object of the invention is to provide a vehicle that is simpler to use and allows for a reduction in operating costs.

[0011] To this end, the invention relates to a vehicle, in particular a railway vehicle, comprising:

[0022] - the cooling and temperature maintenance system further comprises a heat transfer fluid management device adapted to: in the temperature maintenance configuration, isolate the branch of the exchanger; and to, in the normal operating configuration, at least from time to time, direct at least a portion of the heat transfer fluid heated by the power generation system to the branch so that at least said portion of the heat transfer fluid passes through the device before returning to the power generation system;

[0023] - the device comprises: a tank defining an interior volume containing the phase change material; and a plurality of pipes for conveying the heat transfer fluid, the pipes passing through the internal volume and being in thermal contact with the phase change material;

[0026] The invention also relates to a method implementing a vehicle as described above, in particular a railway vehicle, the method comprising the following steps:

[0027] - placing the vehicle in the temperature maintenance configuration, with reception of at least a portion of the heat transfer fluid in the device, the phase-change material transferring heat to said portion of the heat transfer fluid by at least partially changing state, and the heat transfer fluid circulating in the power generation system to maintain the fuel cell temperature, and

[0029] The invention will be better understood on reading the following description, given solely by way of example and with reference to the appended drawings, in which:

[0030] [Fig-1] [Fig.l] is a schematic view of a vehicle according to the invention,

[0031] [Fig.2] [Fig.2] is a schematic, vertical cross-sectional view of a device heat storage shown in [Fig.1],

[0032] [Fig.3] [Fig.3] is a schematic, axial cross-sectional view of a heat storage device according to a first variant of the heat storage device shown in Figures 1 and 2, and

[0033] [Fig.4] [Fig.4] is a schematic axial cross-sectional view of a heat storage device according to a second variant of the heat storage device shown in Figures 1 and 2.

[0034] With reference to [Fig.1], a vehicle 10 according to the invention is described.

[0035] Vehicle 10 is, for example, a railway vehicle, such as a high-speed train speed, a regional train or a suburban train or a tram.

[0036] Alternatively, the vehicle is for example a bus or a naval platform.

[0037] The vehicle 10 includes an electricity generation system 12 comprising a plurality of fuel cells 14, and a cooling and temperature maintenance system 16 comprising a heat transfer fluid 18.

[0038] The vehicle 10 is movable between a normal operating configuration, in which the electricity generation system 12 produces electricity and the fuel cells 14 are cooled by the cooling and temperature maintenance system 16, and a temperature maintenance configuration, in which the fuel cells 14 receive heat from the cooling and temperature maintenance system 16.

[0039] In the temperature maintenance configuration, according to a particular embodiment, the electricity production system 12 does not produce electricity.

[0040] According to another embodiment, in the temperature maintenance configuration, the electricity production system 12 can start producing electricity, for example towards the end of the temperature maintenance.

[0041] In the example, there are six fuel cells 14.

[0042] According to variants not shown, the electricity production system 12 includes fewer than six fuel cells, for example only one, or more than six fuel cells.

[0043] Each of the fuel cells 14 is for example adapted to be traversed by the heat transfer fluid 18, and to give it heat in the normal operating configuration, or to receive heat from it in the temperature maintenance configuration.

[0044] The fuel cells 14 are, for example, designed to operate normally at an operating temperature, for example, between 65°C and 70°C. The temperature maintenance is intended to keep the fuel cells 14 at a temperature above a minimum operating temperature.

[0045] The minimum operating temperature is, for example, approximately 5°C and may vary depending on the fuel cell technology. Above this temperature, the fuel cells 14 can be activated and thus deliver some power. The vehicle 10 can then begin its mission at reduced power.

[0046] The heat losses of the fuel cells 14 are in turn transferred into the cooling and temperature maintenance system 16, which will help to raise the temperature of the heat transfer fluid 18 to a value, for example about 50°C, from which the fuel cells 14 can be used at full power.

[0047] In the example, the fuel cells 14 are mounted in parallel, that is to say the heat transfer fluid 18 splits before entering the fuel cells, then recombines after the fuel cells, for example before entering the cooling and temperature maintenance system 16.

[0048] In addition to the heat transfer fluid 18, the cooling and temperature maintenance system 16 includes a heat exchanger 20 adapted to carry out a heat exchange between the heat transfer fluid 18 and the outside atmosphere 22 to cool the heat transfer fluid, and at least one heat storage device 24 comprising a phase change material 26.

[0049] According to variants not shown, the cooling and temperature maintenance system 16 includes more than one exchanger and / or more than one heat storage device.

[0050] In the example, the cooling and temperature maintenance system 16 comprises a loop 28 adapted to conduct the heated heat transfer fluid 18 from the electricity production system 12 to the exchanger 20, and to conduct the cooled heat transfer fluid 18 from the exchanger 20 to the electricity production system 12. In the example, the cooling and temperature maintenance system 16 comprises a branch 30 mounted on the loop 28 in bypass of the exchanger 20 and adapted to conduct into the device 24 at least a portion of the heat transfer fluid 18 circulating in the loop. In other words, the exchanger 20 and the device 24 are mounted in parallel with each other with regard to the heat transfer fluid 18.

[0051] According to a variant not shown, the device 24 and the exchanger 20 are in series, with the possibility of short-circuiting the exchanger 20 in the temperature maintenance configuration.

[0052] Advantageously, the cooling and temperature maintenance system 16 further comprises a device 32 for managing the heat transfer fluid 18.

[0053] In the example, the cooling and temperature maintenance system 16 comprises at least one pump 34 for circulating the heat transfer fluid, and an expansion tank 36.

[0054] The heat transfer fluid 18 is for example water, or glycolated water.

[0055] The exchanger 20 comprises for example a fan 38 adapted to blow air in order to cool the heat transfer fluid 18.

[0056] The management device 32 is advantageously adapted, in the temperature maintenance configuration, so that the heat transfer fluid 18 coming from the electricity production system 12 circulates in the branch 30, then returns to the electricity production system 12, advantageously without passing through the exchanger 20.

[0057] The control device 32 is advantageously adapted, in the normal operating configuration, to at least occasionally direct at least a portion of the heat transfer fluid 18 heated by the power generation system 12 to the branch 30 so that at least said portion of the heat transfer fluid 18 passes through the device 24 before returning to the power generation system 12.

[0058] The control device 32 includes, for example, two three-way valves 40,42 located at the ends of branch 30.

[0059] The heat storage device 24 is adapted, in the normal operating configuration, to receive at least a part of the heat transfer fluid 18 heated by the electricity production system 12, the phase change material 26 receiving heat from said part of the heat transfer fluid and storing it as latent heat by changing at least partially its state.

[0060] The heat storage device 24 is adapted, in the temperature maintenance configuration, to receive at least a portion of the heat transfer fluid 18, the phase change material giving off heat to said portion of the heat transfer fluid by at least partially changing state.

[0061] As visible in [Fig.2], the device 24 comprises for example a tank 44 defining an interior volume 46 containing the phase change material 26, and a plurality of pipes 48 for conveying the heat transfer fluid 18.

[0062] The pipes 48, for example vertical, pass through the internal volume 46 and are in thermal contact with the phase change material 26.

[0063] The phase change material 26 has a melting temperature lower than the normal operating temperature of the fuel cells 14. The melting temperature is preferably less than 80°C, even more preferably less than 68°C, even more preferably less than 60°C, even more preferably less than 55°C and even more preferably less than 40°C.

[0064] The phase-change material 26 has a higher melting point at the minimum operating temperature of fuel cells 14. The melting temperature is preferably above 5°C and even more preferably above 20°C.

[0065] The phase-change material 26 is adapted to store energy, particularly in the form of latent heat, when the vehicle 10 is in operation. The phase-change material 26 is then in a liquid phase. The phase-change material 26 is adapted to release energy in the form of latent heat when its temperature drops below its melting point and it solidifies. The phase-change material 26 is adapted to be recharged with energy by heating it again to a temperature above its melting point.

[0066] The phase change material 26 is, for example, paraffin or sodium acetate trihydrate.

[0067] Alternatively, the phase-change material 26 is lauric, myristic, or stearic acid.

[0068] The quantity of phase change material 26 in the device 24 is for example between 10 and 100 kg, and is for example about 20 kg.

[0069] The operation of vehicle 10 will now be described.

[0070] In the normal operating configuration, the electricity production system produces electricity 12, for example used for the propulsion of the vehicle 10 and / or for internal needs, such as heating, air conditioning and lighting of the vehicle 10. The fuel cells 14 release heat, and are cooled by the cooling and temperature maintenance system 16 which keeps them at their normal operating temperature.

[0071] The heat transfer fluid 18 is set in motion, advantageously by the pump 34.

[0072] The heat transfer fluid 18, previously cooled, enters the fuel cells 14, receives the heat released by the fuel cells and is heated to a temperature advantageously close to the normal operating temperature of the fuel cells, and higher than the melting temperature of the phase change material 26.

[0073] Then, the heat transfer fluid 18 enters the loop 28 of the cooling and temperature maintenance system 16. At least a portion of the heat transfer fluid 18 passes into the exchanger 20 and is cooled there, before being returned to the electricity production system 12. At least at certain times, at least a portion of the heat transfer fluid 18 takes the branch 30 and passes through the device 24. In the device 24, the heat transfer fluid 18 gives up heat to the phase change material 26 if the latter is colder.

[0074] For example, the phase-change material 26 is initially entirely solid, because it was used to preheat the electricity production system 12. The heat received by the phase change material 26 gradually melts it. Advantageously, after a certain time, the phase change material 26 is completely liquid.

[0075] According to a particular mode of operation, the management device 32 permanently directs a fraction, advantageously the majority, of the heat transfer fluid 18 towards the exchanger 20 and another fraction, advantageously the minority, of the heat transfer fluid 18 towards the device 24.

[0076] Next, the vehicle 10 is brought to a standstill, for example at night, and cools down. The phase-change material 26 is initially at a high temperature, greater than or equal to its melting point. The phase-change material 26 gradually cools down. When its temperature reaches its melting point, it returns to a solid phase. The phase-change material 26 gradually releases heat to the heat transfer fluid 18 in the device 24. This has the effect of delaying the temperature drop of the heat transfer fluid 18 and advantageously sets the heat transfer fluid in motion, which circulates in the fuel cells 14 to maintain their temperature.

[0077] The objective is, for example, that at the end of the storage period, the temperature of the heat transfer fluid 18 and the fuel cells 14 is greater than or equal to the minimum temperature, for example approximately 5°C, allowing the fuel cells to be started at reduced power. At the end of the storage period of the vehicle 10, the phase-change material 26 is normally partially solidified, or even completely solidified.

[0078] In the temperature maintenance configuration, the branch 30 is advantageously insulated from the exchanger 20. Thus, the heat from the phase change material 26 is released only in a smaller heat transfer fluid loop 18, without the exchanger 20. In this case, there is less heat loss, and it is then easier to maintain the heat transfer fluid 18 above the minimum temperature, in the example of about 5°C.

[0079] Advantageously, the heat transfer fluid 18 maintained at temperature circulates by natural convection in the electricity production system 12.

[0080] Preferably, the vehicle 10 is in the temperature maintenance configuration throughout its immobilization, in order to avoid excessive cooling of the fuel cells 14. The fuel cells 14 are maintained at a sufficient temperature, above the minimum operating temperature, and are started when their temperature reaches a sufficient level, possibly in reduced mode.

[0081] Thanks to the characteristics described above, the vehicle 10 is simpler of use and helps reduce operating costs. The cooling and temperature maintenance system 16 reduces the energy consumed by the vehicle 10. The vehicle 10 requires fewer batteries dedicated to preheating, or none at all.

[0082] The phase change properties of the phase change material 26 make it possible to guarantee, throughout the storage period, that the phase change material remains at a temperature sufficient for maintaining the temperature of the heat transfer fluid 18 and the fuel cells 14.

[0083] The invention makes it possible to valorize the thermal losses of fuel cells 14.

[0084] In some cases, no additional energy (shore power or battery) is used to maintain temperature.

[0085] This allows for significant savings, of approximately 15 kWh, on the battery whose capacity is, for example, 110 kWh.

[0086] Reliability is improved because the solution is "passive," in that the changes of state of the phase-change material 26 are caused only by temperature differences. This reduces the number of components that could fail and improves the mean time between failures (MTBF) of the vehicle 10.

[0087] The invention also reduces the risk of over-temperature caused by a malfunction of the temperature maintenance system, and therefore the risk of damaging the fuel cells 14.

[0088] Thus, the availability of vehicle 10 is improved. Vehicle 10, for example a train, can start its mission, possibly with reduced performance at the start, as soon as the driver arrives, thanks to the temperature maintenance configuration.

[0089] With reference to [Fig. 3], a heat storage device 124 is described constituting a first variant of the device 24. The device 124 is analogous to the device 24 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. Similar elements bear the same numerical references and will not be described again. Only the differences are described in detail below.

[0090] The device 124 is modular and includes at least one module 126.

[0091] In an alternative (not shown), the device 124 comprises several modules analogous to module 126.

[0092] The module 126 comprises a central pipe 128 for conveying the heat transfer fluid 18, and a casing 130 surrounding the central pipe and defining a space 132 containing the phase change material 26. The device 124 comprises fins 134 forming for example discs extending radially from the central pipe 128 into said space 132 and which are in thermal contact with the material to be phase change 26.

[0093] Having fins, or equivalents, surrounded by the phase change material 26 makes it possible to limit the effects of the low conductivity of these materials, and therefore to facilitate the phase change kinetics.

[0094] With reference to [Fig. 4], a heat storage device 224 is described constituting a second variant of the device 24. The device 224 is analogous to the device 24 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. Similar elements bear the same numerical references and will not be described again. Only the differences are described in detail below.

[0095] The device 224 is modular and includes at least one module 226.

[0096] In an alternative (not shown), the device 224 comprises several modules analogous to module 226.

[0097] The module 226 comprises a central pipe 228 for conveying the heat transfer fluid 18, and a casing 230 surrounding the central pipe. The module 226 comprises partitions 232 extending along the central pipe 228 and radially from the central pipe to the casing 230.

[0098] The central pipe 228, the partitions 232 and the envelope 230 together define a plurality of sectors 234 containing the phase change material 26, the phase change material being in thermal contact with the partitions 232 and the central pipe 228.

[0099] Advantageously, the variants described above possibly improve the thermal contact between the heat transfer fluid 18 and the phase change material 26, and improve the kinetics of the phase changes.
