Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: Trim element comprising a backlit logo and a radar
[0001] The present invention relates to a vehicle trim element comprising; - a casing extending along a thickness direction between a support element and a decorative element, - a radar emitting electromagnetic radiation along the thickness direction, said radar being disposed outside the housing on the side of the support element, the electromagnetic radiation passing through said housing from the support element to the decorative element in an emission zone, - a light source extending into the casing between the support element and the decorative element, said light source emitting light radiation in the visible range.
[0002] The invention relates for example to a trim element comprising a backlit motif inserted into a vehicle body element, for example in the manner of a medallion.
[0003] Backlit trim elements are known, the backlighting being arranged, for example, to highlight a symbol, such as the manufacturer's logo or another distinctive feature. Such trim elements include, for example, a housing for the light source enabling the backlighting.
[0004] It is also known to equip a vehicle with one or more radars, for example, to detect obstacles around the vehicle and assist its driving. Such a radar is, for example, positioned near the inner surface of an external trim element of the vehicle in order to emit electromagnetic radiation outwards from the vehicle while remaining invisible from outside the vehicle.
[0005] However, integrating such a radar with a backlit trim element is complicated, particularly due to the bulk generated by the presence of the radar and the light source providing the backlighting, and due to the interference that may be caused by the presence, in the path of the wave emitted by the radar, of parts opaque to electromagnetic radiation or parts whose geometry may alter this path. Such interference is likely to degrade the radar's operation and impair its detection capabilities.
[0006] One of the aims of the invention is to provide a backlit trim element equipped with a compact radar that functions satisfactorily.
[0007] To this end, the invention relates to a vehicle trim element comprising; - a casing extending along a thickness direction between a support element and a decorative element, - a radar emitting electromagnetic radiation along the thickness direction, said radar being disposed outside the housing on the side of the support element, the electromagnetic radiation passing through said housing from the support element to the decorative element in an emission zone, - a light source extending within the casing between the support element and the decorative element, said light source emitting light radiation in the visible range,
[0008] characterized in that the light source extends around at least a part of the emission area and illuminates the decorative element along the thickness direction, at least a part of the light radiation being reflected back into the housing by the support element so as to orient said part of the radiation along the thickness direction in the emission area.
[0009] Using the support element as a light-reflecting surface makes it possible to create a backlit trim element by moving the light source away from the radar's emission zone so that the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the radar is not disrupted by the lighting system components. Thus, the radar can be placed directly behind the housing, making the trim element more compact.
[0010] The filling element according to the invention may also comprise one or more of the following features, taken individually or in any technically feasible combination:
[0011] - The support element extends along the thickness direction of the housing, between a external face and an internal face, turned towards the inside of the housing, the radar extending opposite the external face and emitting electromagnetic radiation passing through the support element from the external face to the internal face, the support element being transparent to the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the radar, at least a part of the internal face reflecting the light in the visible range so that the light emitted by the light source is reflected by said part of the internal face along the thickness direction towards the decorative element.
[0012] - The decorative element extends along the thickness direction of the housing between a face internally facing inwards towards the inside of the case and an external face, the decorative element being transparent to electromagnetic radiation from the internal face to the external face and diffusing light in the visible range.
[0013] - A mask is applied to the inner or outer face of the decorative element, said mask defining a pattern comprising at least one opaque area and one area allowing light to pass through.
[0014] - At least part of the pattern extends in relation to the emission zone so as to be traversed by electromagnetic radiation.
[0015] - The light source comprises at least one light source injecting light in the light guide, the light guide extending between the support element and the decor element around at least part of the emission area in a radial plane perpendicular to the thickness direction of the housing.
[0016] - The light source comprises two light guides extending on either side of the emission zone in the radial plane.
[0017] - The two light guides each extend between two ends, each end of one light guide being connected to the corresponding end of the other light guide by a linking element carrying a light source and extending outside the emission area.
[0018] - The emission zone is entirely contained within the space between the two guides of light in the radial plane.
[0019] - The housing (12) is sealed between the support element (14) and the decorative element (20).
[0020] The invention will become clearer upon reading the following description, given solely by way of non-limiting example, and made with reference to the drawings in which:
[0021] [Fig-1] [Fig.1] is a first schematic cross-sectional representation of an element of filling according to the invention,
[0022] [Fig.2] [Fig.2] is a schematic exploded view of the trim element according to the invention,
[0023] [Fig.3] [Fig.3] is a second schematic cross-sectional representation of the trim element according to the invention.
[0024] With reference to [Fig.1], a trim element 10 is described for a vehicle comprising a housing 12 extending along a thickness direction denoted A-A' and a radar 30 located outside the housing 12.
[0025] The housing 12 comprises a support element 14 and a decorative element 20 assembled together to form the housing 12 by defining an internal volume 26 between them, the internal volume 26 receiving a light source 32.
[0026] The support element 14 extends along the thickness direction A-A' between an inner face 16 turned towards the inside of the housing and an outer face 18, opposite the inner face 16 and intended to be turned towards the vehicle when the trim element 10 is mounted on the vehicle.
[0027] Hereafter, the term "transparent" will be used to describe a material that allows radiation to pass through at least along the thickness direction A-A'. The radiation may be visible light or electromagnetic radiation.
[0028] At least a portion of the inner face 16 of the support element 14 forms a diffusing zone 17, which diffuses at least a portion of the incident visible light emitted by the light source 32 towards the inner face 16 of the support element 14 and directs this light towards the decorative element 20 along the thickness direction. As shown in [Fig. 2], the support element 14 includes on its inner face 16 an edge 15 comprising, for example, a rib 19 projecting from the inner face 16 along the thickness direction A-A'. The rib 19 extends, for example, along the entire edge 15 of the inner face 16 and surrounds all or part of the diffusing zone 17. The rib 19 thus defines an indentation within which the diffusing zone 17 extends.
[0029] The support element 14 is, for example, made of white polycarbonate so that its inner face 16 is entirely diffusing. Alternatively, the diffusing area 17 is made of a material distinct from that of the support element 14, for example in the form of a layer of reflective material deposited on the inner face 16.
[0030] A thickness e3 of the support element 14 is defined as the distance separating the inner face 16 and the outer face 18, this thickness e3 is for example between 2 and 3 millimeters, for example substantially equal to 2.3 millimeters.
[0031] Alternatively, the diffusing zone 17 covers substantially the entire inner face 16 of the support element 14.
[0032] The decorative element 20 also extends along the thickness direction A-A', between an inner face 22 positioned opposite the inner face 16 of the support element 14 and an outer face 24 opposite the inner face 22. The outer face 24 of the decorative element 20 is thus intended to face outwards from the vehicle and to be visible from outside the vehicle. The decorative element 20 comprises a body 44 between its inner face 22 and its outer face 24. In one embodiment, the outer face 24 of the decorative element 20 forms part of the outer surface of the vehicle body.
[0033] Advantageously, the body 44 of the decorative element 20 is made of a diffusing material.
[0034] By "diffusing material" is meant a material which, when it receives visible radiation, diffuses this radiation into the thickness of the decorative element.
[0035] In a particular case, the body 44 is made of polymer and shaped by plastic injection molding. The polymer is, for example, polycarbonate or polymethyl methacrylate acrylic.
[0036] Fig. 2 illustrates a decorative element 20 comprising an edge 21. The edge 21 includes a rib 29 which extends in projection from the inner face 22 along the thickness direction A-A'.
[0037] According to one embodiment, the decorative element 20 comprises, on its outer face 24, an opaque mask 46, i.e., one that prevents light from passing through the outer face 24. The mask 46 and the body 44 define at least one motif 47, as shown in [Fig. 3]. For example, the motif 47 forms a logo or an alphanumeric character. At least a portion of the motif 47 allows light to pass through in order to form a backlit motif 47. More specifically, the area of the body 44 not covered by the mask 46 allows light to pass through and thus forms a backlit area, the shape of which is defined by the mask extending around all or part of the backlit area.
[0038] Alternatively, the mask 46 is located on the inner face 22 of the decorative element 20.
[0039] According to one embodiment, the decorative element 20 further comprises a varnish 48. Anti-condensation coating. Condensation of water vapor in the air leads to the formation of droplets on the inner surface of the diffusing body 44. These droplets disrupt the optical path and degrade the appearance of the backlit pattern 47. Such a coating 48 protects against fogging, for example, by preventing water droplets from adhering to the inner surface 22.
[0040] According to another embodiment of the invention, the decorative element 20 comprises, on its outer face 24, a finishing varnish 50. The finishing varnish 50 allows visible light to pass from the inner face 22 to the outer face 24. The finishing varnish 50 improves the appearance of the decorative element 20 by giving its outer face 24 a glossy appearance. The finishing varnish 50 also improves the flatness of the outer face 24, particularly when a mask 46 is located on the body 44 on the side of the outer face 24.
[0041] The thickness el of the decorative element 20 is for example between 2 and 3 millimeters, for example approximately equal to 2.4 millimeters.
[0042] With reference to [Fig. 1], the housing 12 is closed by a junction 25 between the support element 14 and the decorative element 20. The junction 25 is formed, on the side of the support element 14, by the rib 19 of the edge 15 and on the side of the decorative element, by the rib 29 of the edge 21.
[0043] According to a certain embodiment, the junction 25 is hermetically sealed, thus making the housing 12 watertight. This feature protects the various components contained within the housing 12, particularly from dust or external moisture, and contributes to the long-term proper functioning of the trim element 10. The watertightness of the junction 25 can be ensured, in particular, by including a seal in the edge 15 of the support element 14 and / or in the edge 21 of the decorative element 20. Alternatively, The sealing of the joint 25 is ensured by an adhesive which provides the bond between the edge 15 of the support element 14 and the edge 21 of the decorative element 20.
[0044] The radar 30 is positioned outside the housing 12, as shown in [Fig. 2], on the outer face 18 of the support element 14, at a distance e4 from the outer face 18 along the thickness direction A-A'. The distance e4 is, for example, between 1.6 and 10 millimeters, for example approximately 2 millimeters. The radar 30 emits electromagnetic radiation along the thickness direction A-A'. The radar 30 is specifically oriented so that the area of electromagnetic radiation emission passes through the housing 12, forming a detection zone extending outside the housing 12 on the outer face 24 of the decorative element 20. For this purpose, the support element 14 and the decorative element 20 are transparent to the electromagnetic radiation of the radar 30.
[0045] The radiation emitted by the radar defines an emission zone, for example in the shape of an emission cone, passing through the housing 12. The emission zone extends opposite the radar 30 along the thickness direction A-A' and passes through the support element 14, the internal volume 26, and the decorative element 20 of the housing. Preferably, the emission zone of the electromagnetic radiation from the radar 30 passes through at least part of the pattern 47.
[0046] The radar 30 advantageously has a connection 33, preferably removable, allowing the radar 30 to be fixed to a part of the vehicle, for example an element attached to the vehicle's bumper. Thus, the radar 30 can be easily removed from the vehicle, which facilitates maintenance operations.
[0047] Alternatively, the radar 30 is attached to the housing 12 via the connection 33, which allows access to the radar 30 by removing the housing 12.
[0048] The thickness of the radar 30 taken along the thickness direction A-A' is preferably between 9 and 10 millimeters, for example equal to 9.7 millimeters.
[0049] The light source 32 emits visible light at least partially in the direction of the diffusing zone 17 of the support element 14, so that at least part of the visible light is reflected by the reflective zone towards the inner face 22 of the decorative element 20. The diffusing zone 17 thus acts as a surface light source, extending in relation to the decorative element 20 along the thickness direction A-A', when light is incident on it.
[0050] The light source 32 includes at least one light guide 34, intended to diffuse the visible light from a light source 36. The light guide 34 of the trim element 10 is contained within a space extending between the inner face 16 of the support element 14 and the inner face 22 of the decorative element 20, and is located within the internal volume 26 of the housing. The light guide 34 then extends to less partially around the area of emission of the electromagnetic radiation of radar 30, in a radial plane perpendicular to the thickness direction A-A'.
[0051] The light guide 34 is located in the space between the inner face 22 of the decorative element 20 and the inner face 16 of the support element 14. This space is characterized by a thickness e2 along the thickness direction A-A'. The thickness e2 is between 4 and 6 mm, preferably approximately 5 mm. This distance prevents condensation inside the housing 12 while ensuring the compactness of the system.
[0052] In the embodiment shown in [Fig. 3], the light source 32 comprises two light guides 34 extending on either side of the electromagnetic radiation emission zone of the radar 30. The two light guides 34 extend along the same radial plane perpendicular to the thickness axis A-A' and conform to the shape of the edge 15 of the support element 14 and / or the edge 21 of the decorative element 20, for example by being applied against the junction 25. Each of the two light guides 34 extends between two ends 38. Each end 38 of one light guide 34 is connected to the corresponding end 38 of the other light guide 34, via a connecting element 40.
[0053] Advantageously, the connecting element 40 comprises a light source 36, the light source 36 being, for example, an LED (light-emitting diode). The connecting element 40 includes, for example, a printed circuit board 41 having a plurality of electrical paths for powering the light source 36, by means of an energy source, not shown.
[0054] In the embodiment shown in [Fig. 3], the light guide(s) 34 have a circular cross-section and extend substantially along the junction 25 between the support element 14 and the decorative element 20. The light guide 34 thus formed has a circular cross-section, which allows for the homogeneous diffusion of the light intended to be injected into the light guide 34. The light from a light source 36 is located at one end of a light guide 34; the light guide 34 diffuses this light at least partially towards the diffusing area 17 of the support element 14. Preferably, the light guide is made of a transparent material.
[0055] The radar emission zone 30 is at least partially included in the space between the two light guides 34, and is preferably entirely included in the space between the two light guides 34. In other words, the light guides 34 do not extend and do not intersect the radar emission zone 30. The visible light providing backlighting for the pattern 47 does not come directly from the light guides 34 but results from the reflection of the visible light from the light guides 34 on the diffusing area 17.
[0056] The trim element 10 according to the invention thus makes it possible to integrate a radar 30 behind a housing 12 in a compact manner thanks to the thinness of the housing in the thickness direction A-A'. The use of the support element 14, both as the lower part of the housing 12 and as a visible light reflector, contributes to reducing the number of layers composing the trim element 10. The advantageous position of the radar 30 behind the housing 12 allows easy access to the radar 30 for maintenance purposes without having to disassemble the housing 12.
[0057] The use of long-shaped light guides 34 to produce lighting through a diffusing area 17 contributes to the compactness of the trim element 10 as well as to a better perceived quality of the backlit pattern 47.
