Reconfigurable antenna device with a waveguide structure and at least one metasurface

Abstract

A reconfigurable antenna device comprises: a grounded waveguide structure having a metallic base wall and a metallic top wall provided with a periodic pattern of apertures 36, the waveguide structure defining a substantially linear cavity 35 with first and second ends; a first RF feed 34 configured to input a first RF signal into the first end of the linear cavity; and a lower electromagnetic metasurface layer 32 disposed on or adjacent to the base wall. An RF travelling wave is guided along the linear cavity such that RF energy incident on the lower metasurface layer interacts with and is modified by the metasurface elements and reflected towards and through the apertures. The metasurface may comprise passive non-reconfigurable elements or active reconfigurable elements. An upper electromagnetic metasurface layer may also be provided. The metasurface layers may facilitate beam steering and polarisation control.
