Abstract

A multilayer electrode comprises a first layer comprising a substrate, a second layer comprising a metallic magnetic material and a third layer comprising an electrocatalyst. The second layer is located between the first and the third layer. Preferably, the second layer comprises a ferromagnetic material and may be a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy ferromagnetic material or a non–perpendicular magnetic anisotropy ferromagnetic material. The multilayer electrode is provided as part of a method of modifying an activity of an electrocatalyst and as part of a method of achieving a desired electrocatalytic activity in an electrocatalytic reaction. The multilayer electrode may provide for generating an in-situ magnetic field at the electrode surface in electrocatalytic reactions so that no external magnetic field is required. [Fig 1]
