Abstract

A vacuum cleaner comprises a suction motor for moving an incoming airflow from an air inlet to an air outlet, a dirt separator for separating dirt from the incoming airflow, a bin assembly for collecting the dirt separated from the incoming airflow, a compaction plate 302 arranged to compact the dirt within the bin body, a sensor (317, fig 30) arranged to detect the position of the compaction plate, and a controller arranged to control the suction motor based on the sensed position of the compaction plate. The motor may be caused to pulse or switch off in response to the compaction member moving away from a rest position. (Figure 53)
