Abstract
This invention relates to the technique of making electrocatalytic electrodes based on stainless steel modified through electrodeposition of Fe-Co-Ni ternary metal composites to increase the activity of electrochemically breaking down water molecules. Stainless steel / Fe-Co-Ni electrodes show higher electrocatalytic activity compared to unmodified stainless steel electrodes, single metal electrodes (stainless steel / Fe, stainless steel / Co, stainless steel / Ni), and binary metal electrodes (stainless steel / Fe-Co, stainless steel / Fe-Ni, and stainless steel / Co-Ni). The electrodeposition process was carried out using a solution containing 0.01 M FeSO₂, 0.01 M Co(NO₂), and 0.01 M NiSO₂ with an ion composition of Fe²₂:Co²₂:Ni²₂ = 1:1:1.In media containing 5 g NaHCO₂ / L, the stainless steel / Fe-Co-Ni electrode has a hydrogen evolution reaction activity approximately 32.28 times higher than stainless steel, and approximately 1.6–1.9 times higher than single metal and binary electrodes. The characterization results show that the deposited metal composition is 57.09% Fe, 0.22% Co, and 0.74% Ni, with a potential difference of 0.83 V to Ag / AgCl, a specific surface area of 6.970 m² / g, a total pore volume of 0.0112 cm³ / g, and a pore radius of 15.331 Å. The combination of these characteristics produces an electrode with superior electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen production through water electrolysis.
