Description

Technical Field

[0001] This disclosure relates to an information processing technology suitable for printing using standard printing specifications.

Background Art

[0002] As a standard printing specification for transmitting and receiving printing data between a printer and a computer, IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) is widely used. In IPP, a common mechanism for notifying the computer of the printer's status is provided, and it is possible to display the notified printer status on the computer screen. For example, in Windows (registered trademark), a printer driver common to models conforming to the IPP standard is provided. In this printer driver, when it is notified that the printer is in an error state, a notification window pops up to display the error. However, depending on the printing system, there may be cases where it is not preferable to display a notification regarding the error state of the printer on the screen, and it is desirable to be able to switch the notification frequency according to the usage status of the printer and the like.

[0003] Patent Document 1 discloses a technique for switching the types of statuses that can be notified to a requester according to the type of the requester and the mode of the printer.

Summary of the Invention

Problems to be Solved by the Invention

[0005] However, the technology disclosed in Patent Document 1 switches the type of status to be notified based on predetermined system-fixed conditions such as the type and mode of the requester, thus offering little flexibility in setting the notification frequency. This disclosure aims to provide a technology that enables more appropriate setting of notification frequencies. [Means for solving the problem]

[0006] This disclosure relates to a printing system comprising: an information processing device that performs processing by an extension application associated with a common printer driver that is independent of the model of the printing device and extends the functionality of the common printer driver; and a printing device that performs printing processing based on print data generated by the common printer driver, wherein the extension application comprises: setting means for setting notification frequency information that indicates how often status information indicating the state of the printing device is notified by a notification means; and first processing means for attaching the notification frequency information to print data generated by the common printer driver and transmitting it to the printing device; and the printing device comprises: receiving means for receiving print data to which the notification frequency information has been attached from the information processing device; acquiring means for acquiring the status information; and second processing means for attaching notification instruction information that instructs whether to notify or notify the status information based on the notification frequency information to the status information acquired by the acquisition means and transmitting it to the information processing device. [Effects of the Invention]

[0007] This disclosure will allow for the setting of more appropriate notification frequencies. [Brief explanation of the drawing]

[0008] [Figure 1] This is a block diagram showing the hardware configuration of an information processing system. [Figure 2] This is a block diagram showing the configuration of the printing system. [Figure 3] This figure shows an example of a print settings screen. [Figure 4]This is a flowchart showing the processing flow of the print data editing unit. [Figure 5] This is a flowchart showing the processing flow of a printing device. [Figure 6] This figure shows an example of status information generated by a printing device. [Modes for carrying out the invention]

[0009] Preferred embodiments of this disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the attached drawings. Note that the following embodiments are not intended to limit the scope of the claims of this disclosure, and not all combinations of features described in these embodiments are necessarily essential to the solutions of this disclosure. Furthermore, in the attached drawings, identical or similar components are given the same reference numerals, and redundant descriptions are omitted.

[0010] (First Embodiment) <Hardware configuration of the printing system> Figure 1 is a block diagram showing the hardware configuration of a printing system in this embodiment. The printing system includes a host computer 100 and a printing device 200 that can communicate with each other. The host computer 100 is an example of an information processing device. The host computer 100 has an input interface 110, a CPU 111, a ROM 112, a RAM 113, an external storage device 114, an output interface 115, an input / output interface 116, and a network interface (NETIF) 120. Input devices such as a keyboard 118 and a pointing device 117 are connected to the input interface 110. A display device such as a display unit 119 is connected to the output interface 115. The NETIF 120 controls data transfer to and from external devices via a network. In the example in Figure 1, the display unit 119, the pointing device 117, and the keyboard 118 are shown as separate devices from the host computer 100, but they may be included in the host computer 100. Also, the display unit 119 may be a touch panel display equipped with input / output device functionality.

[0011] The ROM 112 stores the initialization program. The external storage device 114 stores application programs, the operating system (OS), print data generation software, and various other data. For example, an HDD (Hard Disk Drive) or SSD (Solid State Drive) can be used as this external storage device 114. The CPU 111 comprehensively controls each part of the host computer 100 by performing processing according to the procedures of the OS and the various programs stored in the ROM 112, and executes the functions and processes described later. The RAM 113 is used as work memory, etc., when the CPU 111 executes the various programs stored in the external storage device 114.

[0012] The printing device 200, which is an output device, is connected to the host computer 100 via the host computer's input / output interface 116 and the printing device's input / output interface (receiving means) 217. The printing device 200 is composed of a CPU 211, ROM 212, RAM 213, printing unit 214, sensor group 215, operation unit 216, and input / output interface 217, etc. The CPU 111 controls the printing unit 214 according to the control program stored in the ROM 112. The RAM 113 temporarily stores programs required for printing, setting value data received from the host computer 100, etc. The sensor group 215 includes various sensors provided in the printing device 200. For example, the printing device 200 has sensors that detect the remaining amount and consumption of consumables such as printing materials and printing media (paper), and sensors that detect printing operation status such as paper jams, etc., and the status of the printing device is obtained from the output of these sensors. Furthermore, the main body of the printing device 200 is equipped with an operation unit 216 for setting operations and displaying the status related to printing.

[0013] In the example shown in Figure 1, the host computer 100 and the printing device 200 are shown separately, but they may be configured as a single information processing device. Also, in this embodiment, the printing device is described using an inkjet printing device that prints by ejecting ink as a printing material onto a recording medium, but other printing methods may be used, such as an electrophotographic printing device that uses toner or other printing materials. Furthermore, the host computer 100 may be a desktop personal computer, a smartphone, a tablet terminal, or a notebook personal computer. The input / output interface 116 may be a wired interface or a wireless interface. In addition, the host computer 100 and the printing device 200 may be connected via a LAN or a WAN such as the Internet.

[0014] <Status notification according to standard printing specifications> Next, we will explain the status notification mechanism when using IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) as the standard printing specification. Here, we will use a host computer 100 equipped with Microsoft's Windows® as an example. IPP has a mechanism to notify the computer of information about the status of the printing device as an attribute value expressed as a string. For example, if the number of printing media (paper) used as consumables in the printing device is low, it will be expressed as the string "media-low-report" (see Figure 6). Here, the suffix "-report" indicates the severity of the status information that has occurred. Specifically, if the status information that has occurred is of a degree that does not affect the print result, the string "-report" is added to the end. If the status information is of a degree that could affect the print result, the string "-warning" is added to the end. For example, if the amount of ink used as a consumable for printing is low, it will be expressed as the string "marker-supply-low-warning". And if the status information is of a degree that prevents printing from continuing, the string "-error" is added to the end. For example, if the ink used for printing has completely run out, this is represented by the string "marker-supply-empty-error". The printing device can manage ink level information by distinguishing between status information indicating that the ink level is above a predetermined amount, status information indicating that there is ink remaining but the amount is less than a predetermined amount, and status information indicating that the ink has run out. The host computer 100 displays the status information on the display unit 119 according to the suffix of the notified status information. For example, if the suffix is "-warning" or "-error", the status information is displayed as a pop-up on the display unit 119 to notify the user. If the suffix is "-report", the status information is not displayed as a pop-up on the display unit 119, and no notification is given to the user. In this way, whether or not to display the status information as a pop-up is determined according to the string of the suffix. In other words, this suffix can be considered notification instruction information in standard printing specifications, indicating whether or not to notify the user of status information.

[0015] <About extension applications> Next, we will explain the extension application 203. The extension application 203 is an application that extends the functionality of the standard printer driver (IPP Class Driver) for executing printing processes using IPP. The standard printer driver is a printer driver that can be used in common by different models of printing devices provided by different vendors, etc. In other words, the standard printer driver is a common printer driver that is independent of the printer model. Hereafter, the standard printer driver will also be referred to as the common print driver. As mentioned above, the common printer driver has a function to display (notify) the status information of the printing device on the display unit according to its importance. However, the frequency of notifications made by the common printer driver is predetermined, and it was difficult for the user to control that frequency. Therefore, in this embodiment, by extending the functionality of the common printer driver with the extension application 203 described below, it is possible to appropriately control whether or not notifications regarding the printer status are sent to the user, even when printing using the standard printing standard.

[0016] <Printing system using a common print driver> Figure 2 is a diagram schematically showing the configuration of a printing system. Here, a printing system using a host computer 100 equipped with Microsoft (registered trademark) Windows (registered trademark) 11 as the OS will be described as a premise. Note that Fig. 2(a) is a diagram showing a general configuration when the extended application 203 is not associated with the print data generation software 202 and the printing device 200, that is, the configuration of a printing system in which the extended application 203 is not used. On the other hand, Fig. 2(b) is a diagram showing the configuration of the printing system of the present embodiment in which the extended application 203 is associated with the print data generation software 202 and the printing device 200. In Fig. 2, the print data generation software 202 corresponds to a common printer driver.

[0017] First, an example of a printing system with a general configuration will be described using Fig. 2(a). In a printing system with a general configuration, the host computer 100 includes a drawing application 201 and print data generation software 202. The drawing application 201 and the print data generation software 202 are programs operable on the host computer 100.

[0018] The drawing application 201 is software for creating the content (drawing data) to be printed. Examples of the drawing application 201 include various applications operated by the user, such as a document creation application or a spreadsheet application. When the drawing application 201 receives a print request from the user, it issues a print instruction to the OS. The print instruction includes print setting information for instructing the operations of the print data generation software 202 and the printing device 200. The print setting information is also called a Print Ticket (hereinafter abbreviated as "PT").

[0019] The drawing application 201 can display, on the display unit, a print setting screen provided by any one of the print data generation software 202, the OS, and the drawing application 201 in order to generate print setting information (PT). The print setting screen includes setting items indicating print functions and controls (GUI) indicating the set values thereof.

[0020] The print setting information (PT) set by the user through the print setting screen is included in the print instruction output from the drawing application 201 to the OS. The print instruction is transmitted by the OS to the print data generation software 202. Note that the print instruction output from the drawing application 201 includes, in addition to the print setting information (PT), the drawing data to be actually printed.

[0021] The OS generates intermediate data (also referred to as input data) based on the print instruction output from the drawing application 201 and transmits it to the print data generation software 202. Note that the data output by the drawing application 201 for printing is data in the Graphic Device Interface format (GDI format data) or data in the XML Paper Specification format (XPS format data). When using a common printer driver (IPP Class Driver) as the print data generation software 202, if the data output by the drawing application 201 is GDI format data, the OS performs a data format conversion. That is, the OS converts the GDI format data output from the drawing application 201 into XPS format data. Then, the converted XPS format data is transmitted as intermediate data to the print data generation software 202.

[0022] On the other hand, if the data output by the drawing application 201 is XPS format data, the OS transmits the XPS format data as intermediate data to the print data generation software 202. Note that the intermediate data includes drawing data, which is information on the image to be formed on the paper surface, and print setting information (PT) set by the user.

[0023] The print data generation software 202 converts the acquired intermediate data into print data that can be interpreted by the printing device 200 and transmits it to the printing device 200. Alternatively, the intermediate data and print setting information may be transmitted to the extended application 203 via the print data generation software 202. In this case, the extended application 203 generates print data based on the intermediate data and print setting information. The print data includes drawing data, which is information about the image to be formed on the printing medium, and print setting attribute information (attribute information that specifies the print settings) generated based on the print setting information set by the user. The print setting attribute information includes attribute information indicating the functions that can be specified by the printing device 200 (capabilities of the printing device 200) and setting values associated with that attribute information.

[0024] The printing device 200 prints onto the printing medium based on the print data transmitted from the print data generation software 202. At this time, the printing device 200 controls the printing unit according to the print setting attribute information included in the print data and forms an image represented by the drawing data included in the print data on the printing medium. The print setting attribute information includes attribute information and its setting values for specifying print quality (e.g., image quality priority or speed priority), and double-sided printing. For example, if attribute information specifying double-sided printing is included in the print setting attribute information, the printing device 200 performs double-sided printing, forming an image on both the front and back surfaces of the printing medium.

[0025] On the other hand, Figure 2(b) shows the configuration of this embodiment when the extended application 203 is associated with the print data generation software 202 and the printing device 200. Note that configurations and processes not specifically mentioned below are equivalent to those in Figure 2(a).

[0026] The extension application 203 is software that extends the functionality of the print data generation software 202, which is a common printer driver, and is not pre-installed (not bundled) with the OS. Therefore, the user operates the host computer 100 to download the extension application 203 from a server via the internet and install it on the host computer 100. Alternatively, the extension application 203 may be automatically installed on the host computer 100 based on the connection of the printer 200 to the host computer 100. Specifically, when the printer 200 is connected to the host computer 100, the OS obtains device identification information from the printer 200. The OS may download the extension application 203 corresponding to the obtained device identification information from a server via the internet and install it on the host computer 100. In this way, the print data generation software 202 and the extension application 203 are kept as separate files on the host computer 100.

[0027] The print data generation software 202 and the extended application 203 may be updated and upgraded, but these update processes are performed at different times. In other words, the timing at which the host computer 100 acquires the print data generation software 202 is different from the timing at which the extended application 203 is acquired. Also, the triggers for the host computer 100 to acquire the print data generation software 202 and the triggers for the acquisition of the extended application 203 are different. When the extended application 203 is installed, the OS associates the extended application 203 with the print data generation software 202 and the corresponding printing device 200.

[0028] The extended application 203 described in this embodiment comprises a print settings screen extension unit (setting means) 204 and a print data editing unit (first processing means) 205. The extended application 203 may also include other functions. For example, functions provided by print data generation software 202, such as print preview, may be added, and these functions may be configurable using the print settings screen extension unit 204.

[0029] When the drawing application 201 receives a print request from the user, it issues a print command to the OS. The print command includes print setting information (PT), similar to the configuration in Figure 2(a). In the configuration of Figure 2(b), the drawing application 201 can also display a print settings screen for specifying print setting information (PT), similar to the configuration in Figure 2(a). In the configuration of Figure 2(b), the print settings screen provided by the print settings screen extension unit 204, which is provided in the extended application 203, is displayed. This screen is displayed when the print data generation software 202 is selected in the drawing application 201 and the display of the print settings screen is instructed. Figure 3 is an example of a print settings screen displayed by the print settings screen extension unit 204. In this embodiment, the print settings screen extension unit 204 displays a setting item 301 related to the frequency of status notifications as one of the print setting items, as shown in 301 of Figure 3. By switching the print settings, the user can select whether to receive status information from the printer 200 as usual, only when an error occurs, or not receive any notifications at all, using the pull-down menu 302 for notification frequency settings. This selection can be made at the user's discretion.

[0030] The setting value representing the notification frequency selected by the user (notification frequency information) is stored in the print setting information (PT) and sent to the print data editing unit 205 via the OS and the print data generation software 202. Based on the print setting information (PT), the print data editing unit 205 performs the following editing processes on the print data processed by the print data generation software 202.

[0031] <Editing process by the print data editing unit> Figure 4 is a flowchart illustrating the print data editing process performed by the print data editing unit 205 in this embodiment. In the following description, the letter S attached to each process number in the flowcharts of Figures 4 and 5 represents a step.

[0032] The print data editing unit 205 acquires print data from the print data generation software 202 (S401), and then acquires print setting information (PT) from the OS (S402). The print data editing unit 205 then determines whether a setting value for the frequency of status notifications exists in the print setting information (PT) (S403). If it determines that no setting value for the frequency of status notifications exists, the print data editing unit 205 terminates processing. If it determines in S403 that a setting value for the frequency of status notifications exists, the print data editing unit (acquisition means) 205 acquires the setting value for the frequency of status notifications from the print setting information (PT) (S404).

[0033] After this, the print data editing unit 205 adds the acquired settings as print setting attribute information to the print data (S405) and terminates processing. After the print data editing unit 205 has edited the print data, that is, after the processing shown in Figure 4 is completed, the print data is sent to the printing device 200 via the OS.

[0034] As described above, in this embodiment, the print data editing unit 205 refers to the print setting information (PT) and checks whether the setting for the frequency of status notifications has been made. If the setting for the frequency of status notifications has been made, the print data editing unit 205 adds the setting value for that notification frequency to the print data as print setting attribute information. That is, it sends the setting value for the status notification frequency set by the user on the print setting screen to the printing device 200 as one of the print setting values. Note that the information set by the user on the print setting screen does not necessarily have to be sent to the print data editing unit 205 as print setting information (PT). For example, it may be used to notify using a file stored in the external storage device 114 or information stored on RAM 113 as shared information that can be commonly accessed from each unit of the extended application 203. In that case, the extended application 203 uses the API (Application Program Interface) provided by the OS to write and read information to and from the shared information. Note that, as described above, when the extended application 203 obtains intermediate data and print setting information via the print data generation software 202, the extended application 203 generates print data using the setting value obtained in S404.

[0035] <Processing of printing equipment> Next, the processing of the printing device will be explained. After the print data editing unit 205 edits the print data, the print data is sent to the printing device 200 via the OS. The printing device 200 prints on the paper based on the received print data. At this time, the printing device 200 refers to the print setting attribute information contained in the print data, determines the type of printing medium to be used for printing, the print quality, etc., and performs the printing operation based on that determination. Furthermore, the printing device performs notification processing of status information to be sent to the host computer according to the print setting attribute information.

[0036] Figure 5 is a flowchart illustrating the status information notification process performed by the CPU 211 (second processing means) of the printing device 200 in this embodiment. After receiving print data via the input / output interface 217 (S501), the CPU 211 checks whether there is a request for status information output (S502). Specifically, it checks whether the print data includes the IPP Get-Printer-Attributes operation, and terminates the process if it does not. If there is a request for status information output (S502: YES), the CPU 211 checks whether the print setting attribute information contains a setting value for the status notification frequency (S503).

[0037] If the print setting attribute information includes a setting value for the status notification frequency, that setting value is obtained (S504). Next, the CPU 211 obtains the status information of the printer 200 (S505). The status information is information about errors and warnings occurring in the printer 200. This status information is obtained from the detection results of each sensor of the sensor group 215 installed in the printer 200 and is temporarily stored in the RAM 213 installed in the printer 200. In S505, the CPU 211 reads and obtains the status information stored in the memory area.

[0038] Next, the CPU 211 determines the frequency of status information to be sent to the host computer 100 based on the judgment result in S503 and the status notification frequency information obtained in S504 (S506). If it is determined in S503 that there is no status notification setting value, or if it is determined that the status notification frequency setting value obtained in S504 is "notify as usual", a suffix corresponding to that determination is added to the status information (S507). As a result, the status information to be sent to the host computer 100 will be as shown in Figure 6(a). For example, if the ink used for printing is running low, status information "marker-supply-low-warning" is generated with the suffix "-warning" added. Also, if the ink used for printing is running low, status information "marker-supply-low-error" is generated with the suffix "-error" added.

[0039] Furthermore, if the status notification frequency setting obtained in S504 is "Notify only errors", the suffix "-report" is added instead of the "-warning" suffix that is added to the status information in "Notify as usual" (S508). As a result, the status information to be sent to the host computer 100 will be as shown in Figure 6(b). For example, if the amount of ink used for printing is low, status information "marker-supply-low-report" is generated with the suffix "-report" added.

[0040] Furthermore, if the status notification frequency setting obtained in S504 is "no notification", the status information is always appended with the suffix "-report" (S509). That is, the status information to be sent to the host computer 100 will be the status information shown in Figure 6(c). After this, the CPU 211 sends the generated status information to the host computer 100 via the input / output interface 217 and finishes processing (S510).

[0041] The OS installed on the host computer 100 receives status information notified from the printer 200. If the suffix attached to the status information is "-warning" or "-error", the status information is displayed as a pop-up on the display unit 119 to notify the user. In other words, by setting the notification frequency on the print settings screen, status information with a suffix corresponding to the set notification frequency is sent from the printer 200 to the host computer. This makes it possible to appropriately control the notification frequency of status information from the printer 200 according to the user's settings, even when printing using standard printing specifications, and greatly improves the convenience of the printing system.

[0042] (Second Embodiment) Next, a second embodiment of this disclosure will be described. In the first embodiment described above, if the frequency of printer status notifications is set to a frequency different from the normal frequency, the user switches the setting on the print settings screen. In contrast, there are cases where it is desirable to always set the frequency of printer status notifications to "no notification" so that the user does not have to change the notification frequency. For example, if the host computer 100 is used only for printing in a POS system, it is desirable that the settings related to the notification frequency be made only by the administrator of the host computer, so that other users do not accidentally change the notification frequency. In view of such usage, the second embodiment provides a configuration that allows the user to fix the status notification frequency set by the administrator without having to change the settings related to the printer status notification frequency on the print settings screen. Note that configurations and processes that are not specifically mentioned below are the same as those of the first embodiment.

[0043] In this embodiment, when the print settings screen extension unit 204 displays the print settings screen in response to a request from the drawing application 201, it first reads an external file stored in the external storage device 114. This external file is stored as shared information that can be accessed from all units of the extension application 203. Furthermore, this external file can only be edited by the administrator of the host computer 100 who has file editing privileges. This external file contains, for example, a text entry such as "StatusReportLevel:None," and the print settings screen extension unit 204 determines, based on this information, that the printer device 200 is not in a state where it should not be notified of its status. The print settings information (PT) then stores "No notification" as the setting for the frequency of printer status notifications.

[0044] Furthermore, when the print settings screen extension unit 204 determines the notification frequency of the printer status 200 based on the information in an external file, it operates in a way that prevents the setting item related to the printer status notification frequency from being displayed on the print settings screen. As a result, the user does not need to configure the printer status notification frequency on the print settings screen.

[0045] If no external files exist in the external storage device 114, the print settings screen extension unit 204 operates in the same manner as described in the first embodiment. That is, the print data editing unit 205 refers to the print settings information (PT) and checks whether a setting for the frequency of status notifications has been made. If a setting for the frequency of status notifications has been made, it is added to the print data as print setting attribute information. The printing device 200 then performs the same processing as described in the first embodiment.

[0046] Through the above process, users can fix the printer status notification frequency to the setting configured by the administrator without having to change the settings related to the printer status notification frequency on the print settings screen.

[0047] In the above example, the print settings screen extension unit 204 reads the external file, but it is also acceptable for the print data editing unit 205 to read the external file. In that case, when the print data editing unit 205 refers to the print settings information (PT), it also reads the information contained in the external file. If the external file contains information on the printer status notification frequency, it adds that information to the print data as print setting attribute information and does not use the value of the print settings information (PT). This makes it possible to fix the printer status notification frequency regardless of the setting value set by the user on the print settings screen.

[0048] (Other embodiments) This disclosure can also be implemented by supplying a program that implements one or more of the functions of the embodiments described above to a system or device via a network or storage medium, and by having one or more processors in the computer of that system or device read and execute the program. It can also be implemented by a circuit (e.g., an ASIC) that implements one or more functions. The elements of the embodiments described above may be used in appropriate combinations.
