Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention is in the field of automatic dishwashing. In particular, the present invention relates to a composition comprising a ternary mixture of nonionic surfactants. The composition of the present invention provides improved oily soil suspension and gloss, even at low temperatures, and also provides improved drying. [Background technology]

[0002] A trend in automatic dishwashing is to reduce the amount of energy required for the automatic dishwashing process. One way to reduce energy consumption is to use lower temperatures. There are challenges associated with using lower temperatures, especially with heavily soiled dishes with a high degree of grease. Grease at low temperatures can redeposit on dishes in the dishwasher, causing oil films and stains, and redeposit into the internal parts of the dishwasher, including the filter. Another challenge is that dishes may not be dry at the end of the process.

[0003] WO 2010 / 067054(A1) discloses a liquid composition comprising a nonionic surfactant mixture including a) a nonionic surfactant having a cloud point of 50° C. or higher, and b) a nonionic surfactant having a cloud point of less than 50° C., wherein the weight ratio of a) to b) is in the range of 2.25:1 to 1:1. Although this composition provides good drying properties, there is room for further improvement in the drying time. [Prior art documents] [Patent documents]

[0004] [Patent Document 1] International Publication No. 2010 / 067054(A1) Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

The ternary mixture comprises: (a) A nonionic surfactant having a high cloud point of 50° C. or more, wherein the high cloud point nonionic surfactant has a single alkoxylate type and is an alkoxylated C having 3 to 20 moles of alkylene oxide per mole of surfactant. 6~22 a high cloud point nonionic surfactant which is an alcohol nonionic surfactant; (b) a nonionic surfactant having a low cloud point of less than 50° C., wherein the low cloud point nonionic surfactant is an alkoxylated C alkoxylate having only two alkoxylate types selected from ethoxy, propoxy, and butoxy; 4~25 a low cloud point nonionic surfactant which is an alcohol nonionic surfactant; (c) an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide block copolymer having a cloud point less than 50° C., the ethylene oxide-propylene oxide block copolymer having the following structure: EOx1 POy1 EOx2(I) POy2 EOx3 POy3(II) wherein each of x1, x2, and x3 is in the range of about 1 to about 50, and each of y1, y2, and y3 is in the range of about 10 to about 70; and the weight ratio of the high cloud point nonionic surfactant (a) to the ethylene oxide-propylene oxide block copolymer (c) is at least about 1.2:1; The weight ratio of the low cloud point nonionic surfactant (b) to the ethylene oxide-propylene oxide block copolymer (c) is at least about 1.2:1.

[0007] The composition of the present invention can be used in the main wash or rinse in automatic dishwashing. The composition can be part of the main wash detergent or rinse aid, or can be added separately from an automatic dispenser to either the main wash, rinse, or both. The composition can be delivered from an automatic dispenser. The composition can be dispensed from a dishwashing dispenser in unit dose form, or from a rinse aid reservoir in the form of a rinse aid.

[0008] According to further aspects of the present invention there is provided a method of automatic dishwashing and the use of the composition of the present invention to provide greasy soil suspension and drying properties.

[0009] The elements of the first aspect of the invention apply to the other aspects of the invention mutatis mutandis. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0010] The present invention includes an automatic dishwashing composition comprising a three-component mixture of nonionic surfactants. The present invention also includes the use of the method and composition to provide good oily soil suspension and gloss, and good drying, even at low temperatures. The method is preferably carried out in a domestic dishwashing machine.

[0011] Automatic dishwashing machines can be of domestic or commercial / institutional machine type. In general, the differences concern the size, throughput, and length of time of the dishwashing process. This can mean that the machines are designed in a very different manner. Industrial / institutional machines often have cycles that are much shorter but more energy intensive (e.g., at higher temperatures) and / or use much stronger chemicals than domestic machines. Enzymes are usually not used in these industrial / institutional machines because these enzymes require a certain contact time with the treated soil to function effectively, and commercial cycle times are too short. In the case of commercial dishwashing machines, the machine can be based on a conveyor system where the dishes move through a single or multiple tanks of the dishwasher, while in domestic machines the dishes generally always remain stationary in one tank inside the dishwasher and all the washing steps are performed in that single tank. In domestic dishwashing, it is conventional to include bleach and enzymes in the detergent.

[0012] As used herein, the term "automatic dishwashing detergent composition" means a dishwashing composition used in a dishwashing machine.

[0013] By "dishware" herein is meant cookware, dishes and tableware, i.e., all items associated with the preparation and serving of food and drink that are normally washed in a dishwasher.

[0014] As used herein, articles including "a" and "an" are understood to mean one or more of what is claimed or described. Unless otherwise noted, all component or composition levels refer to the active portion of that component or composition and exclude impurities, such as residual solvents or by-products, that may be present in commercial sources of such components or compositions. Unless specifically stated or the context requires otherwise, the embodiments described herein apply equally to all aspects of the invention. Percentages listed are by weight unless specifically stated or the context requires otherwise.

[0015] Unless otherwise stated, all measurements are performed at 25°C.

[0016] Three-component surfactant mixture The composition comprises a ternary mixture of nonionic surfactants, the ternary mixture comprising: (a) A nonionic surfactant having a high cloud point of 50° C. or more, wherein the high cloud point nonionic surfactant has a single alkoxylate type and is an alkoxylated C having 3 to 20 moles of alkylene oxide per mole of surfactant. 6~22 a high cloud point nonionic surfactant which is an alcohol nonionic surfactant; (b) a nonionic surfactant having a low cloud point of less than 50° C., wherein the low cloud point nonionic surfactant is an alkoxylated C alkoxylate having only two alkoxylate types selected from ethoxy, propoxy, and butoxy; 4~25 a low cloud point nonionic surfactant which is an alcohol nonionic surfactant; (c) an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide block copolymer having a cloud point of less than 50° C., preferably less than 40° C., the ethylene oxide-propylene oxide block copolymer having the following structure: EOx1 POy1 EOx2(I) POy2 EOx3 POy3(II) wherein each of x1, x2, and x3 is in the range of about 1 to about 50, and each of y1, y2, and y3 is in the range of about 10 to about 70; and the weight ratio of the high cloud point nonionic surfactant (a) to the ethylene oxide-propylene oxide block copolymer (c) is at least about 1.2:1; The weight ratio of the low cloud point nonionic surfactant (b) to the ethylene oxide-propylene oxide block copolymer (c) is at least about 1.2:1.

[0019] The ternary mixture of nonionic surfactants contained in the compositions according to the invention is described below and it has been found that compositions containing this mixture exhibit good greasy soil suspension even at low temperatures and drying properties, especially on items treated in a dishwashing run.

[0020] The composition of the present invention comprises a ternary surfactant mixture comprising a) a nonionic surfactant having a cloud point of 50° C. or higher (herein referred to as a "high cloud point nonionic surfactant") and b) a nonionic surfactant having a cloud point of less than 50° C. (herein referred to as a "low cloud point nonionic surfactant"), the weight ratio of a) to b) preferably ranging from 2:1 to 1:2. The ternary surfactant mixture further comprises an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide triblock copolymer having a cloud point of less than 50° C., preferably less than 40° C.

[0021] The cloud point is the temperature at which the nonionic surfactant solution phase separates into a water-rich phase and a surfactant-rich phase and becomes turbid. The cloud point temperature can be determined visually by identifying the temperature at which clouding occurs.

[0022] The cloud point temperature of a nonionic surfactant can be determined as follows: A solution containing 1% of the corresponding surfactant by weight of the solution is prepared in distilled water. The solution is gently stirred before analysis to allow the process to occur at chemical equilibrium. The phase inversion temperature is measured in a thermostable bath by immersing the surfactant solution in a 75 mm sealed glass test tube. To ensure no leakage, the test tube is weighed before and after measuring the cloud point temperature. The temperature is gradually increased at a rate of less than 1°C / min until it reaches a few degrees below the pre-estimated cloud point temperature. The cloud point temperature is determined visually at the first sign of turbidity.

[0023] The cloud point of the high cloud point nonionic surfactant is preferably in the range of 55° C. to 85° C., more preferably 60° C. to 80° C. The cloud point of the low cloud point nonionic surfactant is preferably in the range of 5° C. to 45° C., more preferably 8° C. to 35° C.

[0024] It is most preferred in accordance with the present invention that the high cloud point nonionic surfactant has a cloud point in the range of 60° C. to 80° C. and the low cloud point nonionic surfactant has a cloud point in the range of 8° C. to 35° C. In accordance with the present invention, particularly good results have been achieved with compositions comprising a nonionic surfactant mixture, where the high cloud point nonionic surfactant is an alkoxylated nonionic surfactant having a single alkoxylate type and the low cloud point nonionic surfactant is an alkoxylated nonionic surfactant having at least two alkoxylate types.

[0025] High cloud point alkoxylated nonionic surfactants can be prepared by reaction of monohydroxyalkanols or alkylphenols having 6 to 22 carbon atoms, preferably 8 to 20 carbon atoms, most preferably 10 to 18 carbon atoms. The low cloud point surfactants preferably have a total of 2 to 45 moles of alkylene oxide per mole of surfactant. The type of alkoxylate in the low cloud point surfactant is preferably a mixture of at least two of ethoxylates, butoxylates and / or propoxylates, with a mixture of ethoxylates and propoxylates being particularly preferred. The low cloud point surfactants preferably have 2 to 25 moles, especially 5 to 20 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of alcohol or alkylphenol, and 2 to 40 moles, more preferably 5 to 30 moles of propylene oxide per mole of alcohol or alkylphenol. Mixtures of butylene oxide or propylene oxide are also possible. Particularly preferred low cloud point surfactants are C10-C12 with 10 to 20 EO and 10 to 20 PO. Low cloud point nonionic surfactants can be prepared from either branched or straight chain fatty alcohols of the types described above.

[0028] The low cloud point surfactants may also include surfactants which are ethoxylated and butoxylated monohydroxyalkanols or alkylphenols further comprising polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene block copolymer units, the alcohol or alkylphenol portion of such surfactants comprising more than 30% by weight, preferably more than 50% by weight, more preferably more than 70% by weight of the total molecular weight of the nonionic surfactant.

[0089] Methods of the Invention The method of the present invention comprises the following steps carried out in a dishwasher: a) loading dishes into a dishwasher; b) exposing the dishware to a main wash solution comprising the non-ionic three-component mixture of the present invention.

[0090] The method provides removal of oily soils even in highly stressed washes, i.e. washes containing high levels of soil, including oily soils, and even in programs with low wash cycle temperatures.

[0091] In this specification, "low temperature" means a program having a main wash temperature of 55°C or less, preferably 45°C or less, preferably 40°C or less.

[0092] The method of the present invention comprises the following steps carried out in a dishwasher: a) loading dishes into a dishwasher; b) exposing the dishware to a rinse solution comprising the non-ionic three-component mixture of the present invention.

[0093] This method provides good drying even in highly stressed systems and in programs with low temperature cycles.

[0094] Also provided is a method for providing drying during washing in a dishwashing machine, comprising the step of supplying an automatic dishwashing detergent composition comprising a ternary mixture of nonionic surfactants to the main wash of the dishwashing machine. The method provided good drying even when the composition was supplied in a unit dose form.

[0095] In the context of the present application, a "dishwashing program" is a complete washing process which preferably includes, in addition to the main washing cycle, a prewash, a prerinse and / or a rinse cycle and which can be selected and activated by a program switch of the dishwasher. The duration of these separate washing programs is advantageously at least 15 minutes, advantageously between 20 and 360 minutes, preferably between 20 and 90 minutes. Within the meaning of the present application, a "short washing program" lasts less than 60 minutes and a "long washing program" lasts less than 60 minutes.

[0096] A domestic dishwasher can usually provide several programs, such as a basic wash program for washing soiled dishes that have dried to a certain extent, an intensive wash program for washing very soiled dishes or in the case of food residues that are particularly difficult to remove (very dried or burnt stains), an economy wash program for washing less soiled dishes or partial loads of dishes, and a fast wash program for washing like the previous cycle when faster washing of partial loads of dishes is desired. Each program includes several successive steps. Usually, one or two low-temperature pre-wash cycles, a wash cycle (also known as the main wash), a low-temperature rinse cycle, a high-temperature rinse cycle, and optionally a drying cycle. During different cycles of the program, different compositions can be added to the water in the dishwasher to aid in cleaning. Preferably, a first composition is provided in the pre-wash and a second composition is provided in the main wash cycle.

[0097] In the course of a selected dishwashing program, a domestic dishwasher generally executes one or more cycles, such as a pre-wash, a main wash, an intermediate rinse cycle, a final rinse cycle, and then a drying cycle to finish the program. During each cycle, the washing liquid is distributed, in particular sprayed, by a rotating spray arm, a fixed spray nozzle, e.g. a top spray head, a movable spray nozzle, e.g. a top spin unit, and / or any other liquid dispensing device, into a processing chamber of the dishwasher cavity, where the washing liquid is applied to the items to be washed, such as dishes and / or cutlery, preferably supported in and / or on at least one loading unit, e.g. a pull-out rack or a cutlery drawer, which can be removed or withdrawn. For this purpose, the dishwasher is preferably supplied with washing liquid via at least one supply line by a working circulation pump, which washing liquid collects at the bottom of the dishwasher cavity, preferably in a recess, in particular in a sump. If the washing liquid has to be heated during the respective liquid-induced washing subcycle, the washing liquid is heated by a heating facility, which can be part of the circulation pump. At the end of each liquid induced cleaning subcycle, some or all of the cleaning liquid present within the processing chamber of each instance of the dishwasher cavity is pumped out by the drain pump.

[0098] The compositions of the present invention can be placed in a storage reservoir inside the dishwasher, which can contain multiple doses to be dispensed over multiple programs.

[0099] The reservoir containing the composition of the present invention can be located inside or outside the dishwasher. If located inside the dishwasher, the storage reservoir can be integral with the automatic dishwasher (i.e., a storage reservoir permanently fixed (built-in) to the automatic dishwasher) or can be free-standing (i.e., a separate containment reservoir that can be inserted inside the automatic dishwasher).

[0100] An example of an integrated storage reservoir is a container that is built into the door of an automatic dishwasher and connected to the interior of the dishwasher by a supply line.

[0101] The dosing device can be, for example, an automated unit with a storage reservoir and a dispensing unit capable of releasing controlled amounts of different compositions at different times, e.g., for the pre-wash and the main wash. Different types of hardware may be part of the dosing device for controlling the dispensing of the cleaning compositions or for communicating with external devices, such as a data processing unit, a dishwasher, or a mobile device or server that can be operated by a user.

[0102] Storage reservoirs, especially those that are to be placed inside a dishwasher, need to have very good thermal stability.

[0103] A preferred method according to the present invention is such that the composition remains in a storage reservoir located outside (e.g. WO 2019 / 81910 A1) or inside the dishwasher for at least 2, preferably at least 4, particularly preferably at least 8, in particular at least 12 separate dishwashing programs before being metered into the dishwasher.

[0104] The dosing system can be linked to sensors that can determine the amount of composition needed based on the sensor input. Sensors that can be used include pH, turbidity, temperature, humidity, conductivity, etc. The dishwasher may require data processing capabilities to achieve this. The dishwasher preferably has connectivity with other devices. This can be in the form of wi-fi, mobile data, bluetooth, etc. This allows the dishwasher to be monitored and / or controlled remotely. Preferably, this also allows the machine to connect with the internet.

[0105] The preferred storage reservoir, comprising one or more chambers, has a volume of 10-1000 ml, preferably 20-800 ml, in particular 50-500 ml.

[0107] An automatic dishwashing composition was prepared as detailed herein below.

[0108] I. Preparation of Test Compositions Tests were carried out using the following detergent compositions:

[0109] [Table 1]

[0110] [Table 2]

[0111] II. Test Procedure The test procedure replicates the wash and rinse cycles of a small-scale automatic dishwashing process and measures the ability of automatic dishwashing compositions to suspend grease-based soils. The ability to suspend grease-based soils is measured by assessing the redeposition of added colored canola oil onto a plastic substrate (polypropylene).

[0112] Preparation of colored canola oil: 250 mg of Solvent Red 26 (sold by Sigma Aldrich) is added to 1 liter of canola oil and mixed well until the dye is completely dissolved. - Preparation: The wash solution is prepared in water of the target water hardness and pipetted into a dedicated small container. The wash solution is preheated to the target wash temperature and kept at the set wash temperature for the duration of the wash cycle of the test procedure. - Washing process: Place clean polypropylene nonwoven fabric in the washing solution. 2 Use 4 ml of wash solution per 4 ml of wash solution. Add 0.125 ml of colored canola oil per 4 ml of wash solution. Washing is performed by pipetting the wash solution in and out of the container for 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes of washing, pipette out the wash solution. - Rinse step: pipette demineralized water into and out of the container three times at ambient temperature. The amount of demineralized water used is 1 cm 2 Repeat this process four times. - Drying process: The polypropylene nonwoven fabric is removed from the container and dried in an oven at 30°C for 24 hours. - Analysis: After drying, the polypropylene nonwoven fabrics are subjected to image analysis and their color is compared to that of unsoiled fabrics, which gives a Delta E value. A higher Delta E value means more colored canola oil has been redeposited, which means a lower oil soil suspension ability.

[0113]

number

[0114] A high Delta E means that the fabric will contain more colored stains and therefore have a lower ability to prevent oily stains from adhering to the fabric substrate.

[0115] Example 1

[0116] [Table 3]

[0117] [Table 4]

[0118] As can be seen from the above table, Formula B according to the invention provides lower Delta E and better oily soil suspension compared to Formula A not according to the invention.

[0119] Dimensions and values disclosed herein should not be understood as being strictly limited to the exact numerical values recited.
