[0003] [Patent Document 1] Patent Publication No. 2021-92746 Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0004] In such conventional head mounted displays, it is desirable to further widen the user's field of view. However, simply making the combiner larger may cause, for example, unintended external light to enter through the combiner and obstruct the user's field of view.
[0005] The present disclosure aims to provide a head mounted display that can appropriately superimpose the outside scene and display light while reducing external light that interferes with the field of view, even when the user's field of view is widened. [Means for solving the problem]
[0006] A head mounted display according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a combiner, a beam splitter, and a light shielding unit. The combiner is configured to combine display light with an external view in front of a user wearing the head mounted display, and extends below a lower edge of an optical path of the incident display light. The beam splitter is disposed between the combiner and the user's eyes, and reflects the display light toward the combiner and transmits the display light reflected by the combiner. The light shielding unit blocks external light that transmits the combiner and is reflected by the beam splitter toward the user's eyes.
[0007] A head mounted display according to another embodiment of the present invention includes a combiner, a beam splitter, and a light shielding unit. The combiner is configured to combine display light with an external view in front of a user wearing the head mounted display. The beam splitter is disposed between the combiner and the user's eyes, and reflects the display light toward the combiner and transmits the display light reflected by the combiner. The user's field of view includes a first field of view that is viewed by the user through the combiner, and a second field of view that passes below the combiner without passing through the combiner and is viewed as a continuous field of view below the first field of view. The light shielding unit blocks external light that enters from below the second field of view, is reflected by the beam splitter, and heads toward the user's eyes. Effect of the Invention
[0008] According to the above configuration, it is possible to provide a head mounted display that can appropriately superimpose the outside scene and the display light while reducing external light that interferes with the field of view, even when the user's field of view is widened. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0010] Hereinafter, a head mounted display according to an embodiment will be described in detail with reference to the drawings. However, the present disclosure is not limited to the following embodiments. In addition, the following description and drawings are appropriately simplified for clarity of explanation.
[0011] Fig. 1 is a schematic perspective view showing the appearance of the head mounted display 100. Fig. 2 is a diagram showing a schematic configuration of a portion of the head mounted display 100. Fig. 3 is a diagram showing a portion of the functional blocks of the head mounted display 100. Figs. 2 and 3 mainly show the configuration related to image display of the head mounted display 100. Fig. 2 shows the internal configuration of the head mounted display 100, and in reality, each component shown in Fig. 2 may be covered with a cover or the like.
[0012] The head mounted display 100 is applicable to various uses such as games, entertainment, industry, medical use, flight simulators, etc. The head mounted display 100 is, for example, an AR (Augmented Reality) head mounted display or an MR (Mixed Reality) head mounted display.
[0013] For clarity of explanation, the following will be explained using an XYZ three-dimensional Cartesian coordinate system. With the user as the reference point, the front-to-back direction (depth direction) is the Z direction, the left-to-right direction (horizontal direction) is the X direction, and the up-down direction (vertical direction) is the Y direction. The front direction is the +Z direction, the back direction is the -Z direction, the right direction is the +X direction, the left direction is the -X direction, the up direction is the +Y direction, and the down direction is the -Y direction.
[0014] A user (not shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2) wears a head mounted display 100. As shown in Fig. 1 to Fig. 3, the head mounted display 100 includes a display element unit 101, a frame 102, a left eye optical system 103L, a right eye optical system 103R, and a control unit 105. The control unit 105 includes a control unit 105L and a control unit 105R.
[0015] The frame 102 has a goggle or eyeglass shape, and is attached to the user's head by a headband 109 as shown in Fig. 1. As shown in Fig. 2, the display element unit 101, the left eye optical system 103L, the right eye optical system 103R, the control unit 105L, and the control unit 105R are attached to the frame 102. Note that Figs. 1 to 3 show a binocular head mounted display 100. However, the head mounted display 100 may be a eyeglass-shaped head mounted display or a monocular head mounted display.
[0016] As shown in FIG. 2, the display element unit 101 of the head mounted display 100 includes a left eye display element 101L and a right eye display element 101R. The left eye display element 101L generates a display image for the left eye. The right eye display element 101R generates a display image for the right eye. The left eye display element 101L and the right eye display element 101R each include a flat panel display such as a liquid crystal monitor or an organic EL (Electro-Luminescence) monitor as a display light emitting device. The shape of the display light emitting device included in the left eye display element 101L and the right eye display element 101R is not limited to a flat plate shape, and may be, for example, a curved shape. Each of the left eye display element 101L and the right eye display element 101R includes a plurality of pixels arranged in an array. Here, the array arrangement may be not only a two-dimensional matrix arrangement but also a Pentile arrangement or the like. The left eye display element 101L is disposed to the left (-X side) of the right eye display element 101R.
[0017] As shown in FIG. 2, the control unit 105 is provided above (on the +Y side of) the display element unit 101. As shown in FIG. 2, FIG. 3, etc., the control unit 105 is configured to receive a video signal, a control signal, and power from the outside. The video signal, etc. may be input to the control unit 105 by, for example, a wired connection such as HDMI (registered trademark) or a wireless connection such as Wi-Fi (registered trademark) or Bluetooth (registered trademark). The head mounted display 100 may include an image generation unit (not shown) that generates a video signal. In this case, the control unit 105 may receive the video signal, etc. generated by the image generation unit.
[0018] The control unit 105L and the control unit 105R are provided with hardware resources such as a CPU (Central Processing Unit) and a memory. The control unit 105L and the control unit 105R operate according to a computer program stored in the memory. Furthermore, the control unit 105L and the control unit 105R are each provided with a drive circuit for a display light emitting device of the display element unit 101. As shown in FIG. 3, the control unit 105L generates a display signal for a left eye image based on a video signal, a control signal, and the like supplied thereto, and outputs the signal to the left eye display element 101L. As a result, the left eye display element 101L outputs display light for displaying the left eye image. The control unit 105R generates a display signal for a right eye image based on a video signal, a control signal, and the like, and outputs the signal to the right eye display element 101R. As a result, the right eye display element 101R outputs display light for displaying the right eye image. That is, the control unit 105 outputs a display signal to the display element unit 101.
[0019] The display element unit 101 is not limited to a configuration in which the left eye display element 101L and the right eye display element 101R shown in FIG. 2 are separate display elements, and may be a single display element. That is, a single display element may generate a display image for the left eye and a display image for the right eye. In this case, the display element unit 101 generates an image for the left eye using a part of one side of the display area of the display light emitting device of the display element unit 101, and generates an image for the right eye using a part of the opposite side.
[0020] In the present embodiment, a part or all of the display element unit 101, the control unit 105, etc. are not limited to a configuration in which they are fixed to the frame 102. A part or all of the display element unit 101, the control unit 105, etc. may be provided detachably with respect to the frame 102. For example, a part or all of the display element unit 101, the control unit 105, etc. may be a smartphone, a tablet computer, etc. that is detachably attached to the frame 102. In this case, an application program (app) that generates a display image for a head mounted display may be installed in advance on the smartphone, etc.
[0021] As shown in FIG. 3, the left-eye optical system 103L guides the display light output by the left-eye display element 101L to the left eye EL of the user as a left-eye image. The right-eye optical system 103R guides the display light output by the right-eye display element 101R to the right eye ER of the user as a right-eye image. The left-eye optical system 103L is disposed on the left side (-X side) of the right-eye optical system 103R. As shown in FIG. 4, the left-eye optical system 103L is disposed in front of the left eye EL of the user (+Z direction). Similarly, the right-eye optical system 103R is disposed in front of the right eye ER of the user (+Z direction). The user can view a virtual image of the display image generated by the display element unit 101 in front of the front (+Z direction).
[0022] The head mounted display 100 according to this embodiment is a semi-transmissive head mounted display 100. Therefore, as shown in FIG. 4, the left eye optical system 103L and the right eye optical system 103R each include combiners 121L and 121R, which will be described later. In the semi-transmissive head mounted display 100, display light from the display element unit 101 and an outside scene, which is transmitted light transmitted through the combiners 121L and 121R, are incident on the left eye EL and the right eye ER. Therefore, the user can view a superimposed image in which the display image is superimposed on the view in front (+Z direction).
[0023] Hereinafter, examples of the left eye optical system 103L and the right eye optical system 103R (hereinafter, collectively referred to simply as the optical system) will be further described. FIG. 4 is a diagram showing a schematic configuration of the optical system 103L (103R). Specifically, FIG. 4 is a diagram showing a schematic cross section perpendicular to the left-right direction (X direction) of the head mounted display 100, including the left-right direction (X direction) position where the user's left eye EL (right eye ER) is located. Note that the left eye optical system 103L and the right eye optical system 103R are arranged symmetrically and have the same configuration. For this reason, detailed description of each element of the right eye optical system 103R will be omitted here, and the symbol of each element will be simply added in parentheses after the symbol of the corresponding element of the left eye optical system 103L. In the following description, the left eye optical system 103L in FIG. 4 will be described.
[0024] The left-eye optical system 103L includes a combiner 121L, a beam splitter 122L, and a light blocking unit 130L. The combiner 121L, the beam splitter 122L, and the light blocking unit 130L are fixed to the frame 102 shown in FIGS.
[0025] The combiner 121L is a beam splitter such as a half mirror that reflects a part of the incident light and transmits the other part. If the reflection ratio and transmission ratio of the combiner 121L are equal, the combiner 121L transmits approximately half of the incident light and reflects the remaining half.
[0026] Similarly, the beam splitter 122L is a beam splitter such as a half mirror that reflects a part of the incident light and transmits a part of it. If the reflection ratio and transmission ratio of the beam splitter 122L are equal, the beam splitter 122L transmits approximately half of the incident light and reflects the remaining half.
[0027] The combiner 121L and the beam splitter 122L may increase the reflection ratio and decrease the transmission ratio, or may decrease the reflection ratio and increase the transmission ratio.
[0028] The combiner 121L, which is a beam splitter such as a half mirror, is a concave mirror, and the beam splitter 122L is a plane mirror.
[0029] The combiner 121L and the beam splitter 122L are disposed in front of the user's left eye EL (in the +Z direction). The combiner 121L is disposed in front of the beam splitter 122L (in the +Z direction). In other words, the beam splitter 122L is disposed between the combiner 121L and the user's left eye EL.
[0030] In this embodiment, the combiner 121L extends below the lower edge 122L1 of the beam splitter 122L in the vertical direction (Y direction) based on the eye (left eye EL in the case of FIG. 4) of a user wearing the head mounted display 100. In other words, the lower edge 121L1 of the combiner 121L is located below (on the -Y direction side) the lower edge 122L1 of the beam splitter 122L in the vertical direction (Y direction).
[0031] The left eye display element 101L is disposed above (in the +Y direction) the beam splitter 122L. The left eye display element 101L emits display light PL11 for forming a display image. That is, the left eye display element 101L is disposed diagonally above and in front of the left eye EL.
[0032] As shown in FIGS. 4 and 5, the light blocking portion 130L is configured to block at least the external light PL71 that is transmitted through the combiner 121L and reflected by the beam splitter 122L and directed toward the left eye EL.
[0033] 1 and 4, in this embodiment, the light blocking portion 130L is disposed below the left eye EL (-Y direction) in the up-down direction (Y direction). The light blocking portion 130 has a light blocking plate 131L and a light blocking plate 132L.
[0034] The light shielding plate 131L protrudes forward (+Z direction) away from the user from the lower edge 121L1 of the combiner 121L. The light shielding plate 131L protrudes forward (+Z direction) while inclining downward (-Y direction) from the lower edge 121L1 of the combiner 121L of the left-eye optical system 103L. The light shielding plate 131L may be made of a material that does not transmit light, and may be made of an elastic member such as a resin material or elastic rubber.
[0035] The light shielding plate 132L is connected to the rear end (-Z direction end) of the light shielding plate 131L and is disposed below the left eye EL (-Y direction) in the up-down direction (Y direction). The light shielding plate 132L extends in the front-back direction (Z direction) from near the bottom of the left eye EL (-Y direction) (i.e., directly below the upper edge of the beam splitter 122L) to the lower edge 121L1 of the combiner 121L. The light shielding plate 132L may be formed of a material that does not transmit light, and may be formed of an elastic member such as a resin material or elastic rubber, for example.
[0036] With this configuration, the light shielding portion 130L shields the external light PL71 that passes through the combiner 121L and the external light PL31 that enters the beam splitter 122L from below (-Y side) and is reflected by the beam splitter 122L toward the left eye EL. The light shielding portion 130L is formed of, for example, a light shielding body having a black surface that absorbs light at least on the inner side.
[0037] The light shielding portion 130L may be configured as one light shielding plate in which the light shielding plate 131L and the light shielding plate 132L are integrally formed. In the case of such a structure, the light shielding plate forming the light shielding portion 130L may be installed so as to extend forward (+Z direction) while inclining downward (-Y direction) from one end edge on the user side near the lower portion of the left eye EL (-Y direction), as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. In addition, the light shielding plate forming the light shielding portion 130L may be curved so that the upper surface is concave. In this way, the light shielding portion 130L is provided to block the field of view of the left eye EL diagonally downward in front.
[0038] In the head mounted display 100 of this embodiment, the viewing angle in the up-down direction of the outside scene visually recognized by the user is asymmetric. Specifically, in a cross section perpendicular to the left-right direction (X direction) including the eye (left eye EL in the case of FIG. 4) of the user wearing the head mounted display 100, the front-rear direction (Z direction) at the up-down position (Y direction position) of the left eye EL is set as a reference line RVA. At this time, the light blocking unit 130L is fixed to the frame 102 so that the viewing angle θ2 diagonally downward forward with respect to the reference line RVA is larger than the viewing angle θ1 diagonally upward forward.
[0039] In this way, the lower edge 121L1 of the combiner 121L extends downward beyond the lower edge 122L1 of the beam splitter 122L. For this reason, in the head mounted display 100, the user's field of view extends to a position below the angle of view θ3 of the display light PL12 (in the −Y direction).
[0040] The viewing angle θ1 is an angle between the reference line RVA and the external light PL21 that transmits near the upper edge of the combiner 121L. The viewing angle θ2 is an angle between the reference line RVA and the external light PL21 that transmits near the lower edge 121L1 of the combiner 121L. The viewing angle θ3 is an angle between the display light PL12 generated by the display light PL11 emitted from one edge (-Z direction) of the left eye display element 101L and the display light PL12 generated by the display light PL11 emitted from the other edge (+Z direction) of the left eye display element 101L.
[0041] In this embodiment, a lower edge 121L1 of the combiner 121L extends below a lower edge 122L1 of the beam splitter 122L. However, the structure of the combiner is not limited to this.
[0042] As a first modification of the present embodiment, for example, as shown in FIG. 6, the position of the lower edge of the combiner 121L in the up-down direction (Y direction) may be the same as or slightly below the lower edge 122L1 of the beam splitter 122L. In this case, the structure of the light shielding portion 130L in the first modification may be the same as the light shielding portion 130L shown in FIGS. 1 and 5. That is, the light shielding portion 130L may be disposed below the optical path of the display light PL12 reflected by the combiner 121L and directed toward the left eye EL, and a part of the light shielding portion 130L may protrude in a direction away from the user (+Z direction) from below (-Y direction) the position of the lower edge of the combiner 121L in the front-rear direction (Z direction). Note that the light shielding plate 131L in the first modification may protrude forward (+Z direction) while inclining downward (-Y direction) like the light shielding plate 131L shown in FIGS. 1 and 5.
[0043] The user's field of view in the head mounted display 100 of this embodiment is only the first field of view VR1 in which the outside scene is visually recognized through the combiner 121L. The light shielding plate 131L of this embodiment is disposed at a position that does not intrude into the first field of view VR1.
[0044] In contrast, the user's field of view in the head mounted display of the first modification includes a first field of view VR1 in which the outside scene is viewed through the combiner, and a second field of view VR2 in which the outside scene is viewed as a continuous field of view below (-Y side) the first field of view VR1 without passing through the combiner and passing below the combiner. The light shielding plate 131L in the first modification is disposed at a position not to intrude into the first field of view VR1 and the second field of view VR2.
[0045] The light shielding plate 131L of the light shielding portion 130L in the first modified example blocks external light PL71 that enters from below (-Y direction) the second visual field area VR2, is reflected by the beam splitter 122L, and heads toward the left eye EL of the user.
[0046] In the configuration of the head mounted display of the first modified example as well, the user's field of view extends beyond the angle of view θ3 of the display light PL12 (in the −Y direction).
[0047] Moreover, the light shielding portion 130L in this embodiment and the first modified example only needs to block external light PL31 that enters from below (-Y side) and is reflected by the beam splitter 122L to proceed to the left eye EL. For this reason, the light shielding portion 130L may be provided with a lower window in which a louver is arranged to transmit external light that is directed directly to the left eye EL from below (-Y side) while absorbing light that proceeds in other directions, in order to obtain a field of view obliquely downward in the front.
[0048] In the present embodiment, the light blocking plate 131L may be formed integrally with the light blocking plate 132L in the light blocking portion 130L, but is not limited thereto. In the light blocking portion 130L, the light blocking plate 131L may be formed separately from the light blocking plate 132L and connected to the light blocking plate 132L at the lower edge 121L1 of the combiner 121L.
[0049] The display light PL11 from the left eye display element 101L will be described. The display surface of the left eye display element 101L faces downward (-Y direction). Therefore, the display light PL11 from the left eye display element 101L is emitted downward (-Y direction). Below the left eye display element 101L (-Y direction), a beam splitter 122L is disposed at an angle. The display light PL11 from the left eye display element 101L is incident on the beam splitter 122L. The beam splitter 122L reflects a part of the display light PL11 toward the combiner 121L. The remaining display light PL11 transmitted through the beam splitter 122L is absorbed by the light shielding portion 130L.
[0050] The display light PL11 reflected by the beam splitter 122L is reflected forward (+Z direction). Then, the display light PL11 enters the combiner 121L. The combiner 121L reflects a part of the display light PL11 backward (-Z direction). Here, the display light PL11 reflected by the combiner 121L is defined as display light PL12. Because the combiner 121L is a concave mirror, the optical path of the reflected display light PL12 is such that it is focused toward the left eye EL. The display light PL12 reflected by the combiner 121L enters the beam splitter 122L. The beam splitter 122L transmits a part of the display light PL12.
[0051] The display light PL12 transmitted through the beam splitter 122L is incident on the left eye EL. In this manner, the left-eye optical system 103L guides the display light PL11 from the left-eye display element 101L to the left eye EL of the user. This optical system allows the head mounted display 100 to display a virtual image in front of the user (in the +Z direction). In addition, since a concave mirror is used as the combiner 121L, the display image is enlarged and displayed.
[0052] Next, the external light PL21 that is visually recognized as an external scene in front of the user (in the +Z direction) will be described. A part of the external light PL21 is transmitted through the combiner 121L. The external light PL21 that has transmitted through the combiner 121L is incident on the beam splitter 122L. The beam splitter 122L transmits a part of the external light PL21. The external light PL21 that has transmitted through the beam splitter 122L is incident on the left eye EL.
[0053] Since the head mounted display 100 is a semi-transmissive type, the combiner 121L combines the outside scene, which is the outside light PL21 transmitted through the combiner 121L from the front (+Z direction), with the display light PL11 from the left eye display element 101L. By providing the combiner 121L in front of the user (+Z direction), the head mounted display 100 can be made to be an optical see-through type. A display image is superimposed on the scene in front of the user (+Z direction). That is, the user can view the scene on which the display image is superimposed.
[0054] In this embodiment, the combiner 121L extends below the lower edge 122L1 of the beam splitter 122L. The combiner 121L also extends below the lower edge of the optical path of the display light PL12, which is the reflected light of the display light PL11 that is reflected by the beam splitter 122L and enters the combiner 121L. For this reason, the user's field of view expands the outside scene below (in the -Y direction) the angle of view θ3 of the display light PL12.
[0055] Regarding the configuration of the light shielding unit 130L, as described above, the light shielding unit 130L shields the external light PL71 that passes through the combiner 121L and is reflected by the beam splitter 122L toward the left eye EL. The external light PL71 that the light shielding unit 130L shields includes at least the external light PL51 that is incident at a predetermined angle on the lower edge 121L1 of the combiner 121L, and the external light PL61 that is incident at a predetermined angle on the lower edge 122L1 of the beam splitter 122L located in front of the beam splitter 122L (in the +Z direction). Here, the predetermined angle of incidence is the angle of incidence of the external light that satisfies the condition of the external light PL71 among the external light that is incident on the lower edge 121L1 of the combiner 121L or the lower edge 122L1 of the beam splitter 122L.
[0056] Regarding the specific range of the external light PL71, as shown in Fig. 5, the reflection surface of the beam splitter 122L is set as the reference plane BSL, and the virtual eyeball position VEL is set at a position that is plane-symmetrical with the left eye EL. In other words, the external light PL71 to be blocked is external light that passes through the combiner 121L and the beam splitter 122L at an incident angle and incident position in the range from the external light PL51 to the external light PL61 that intersect at the virtual eyeball position VEL, as shown in Fig. 5. The light blocking unit 130L, particularly the light blocking plate 131L, is provided to be capable of blocking the external light PL51 that is incident on the lower edge 121L1 of the combiner 121L at a predetermined incident angle such that the external light PL51 passes through the lower edge 121L1 of the combiner 121L and can be directly incident on the virtual eyeball position VEL. Furthermore, the light shielding portion 130L, particularly the light shielding plate 131L, is configured to be capable of blocking external light PL61 that enters the lower edge 122L1 of the beam splitter 122L at a predetermined angle of incidence so that it can pass through the lower edge 122L1 of the beam splitter 122L and be directly incident on the virtual eyeball position VEL.
[0057] The light shielding plate 131L of the light shielding portion 130L has a protruding length from the lower edge 121L1 of the combiner 121L that is set to a length capable of shielding the external light PL71 including such external light PL51 and PL61.
[0058] As described above, the head mounted display 100 according to this embodiment includes the combiner 121L (121R), the beam splitter 122L (122R), and the light shielding unit 130L (130R). The combiner 121L (121R) is configured to combine the display light PL11 (PR11) for forming a display image with the external view in front of the user wearing the head mounted display 100 (in the +Z direction), and is extended below the lower edge of the optical path of the display light PL11 (PR11) incident on the combiner 121L (121R). The beam splitter 122L (122R) is disposed between the combiner 121L (121R) and the left eye EL (right eye ER) of the user, and reflects the display light PL11 (PR11) toward the combiner 121L (121R) and transmits the display light PL12 (PR12) reflected by the combiner 121L (121R). The light shielding portion 130L (130R) shields the external light PL71 (PR71) that transmits through the combiner 121L (121R), is reflected by the beam splitter 122L (122R), and travels toward the left eye EL (right eye ER) of the user.
[0059] The light blocking portion 130L (130R) may be a light blocking plate 131L (131R) that protrudes forward (in the +Z direction) of the user from a lower edge 121L1 (121R1) of the combiner 121L (121R).
[0060] In addition, the head mounted display 100 may be configured such that the shading portion 130L (130R) blocks at least the following external light as the external light PL71 (PR71): external light that passes through the lower edge 121L1 (121R1) of the combiner 121L (121R), is reflected by the beam splitter 122L (122R), and is incident at an angle toward the user's left eye EL (right eye ER), and external light that is reflected by the lower edge 122L1 (122R1) of the beam splitter 122L (122R) and is incident at an angle toward the user's left eye EL (right eye ER).
[0061] (Other changes) A head mounted display 200 according to a second modified example shown in Fig. 7 has a similar configuration to the head mounted display 100 according to the above-described embodiment, except that the light blocking portion 230L has a louver film 233L (233R). Here, the louver film has a configuration in which plate-shaped opaque portions are regularly arranged inside a transparent film, and is capable of controlling the direction in which light passes.
[0062] That is, the head mounted display 200 according to the second modified example includes a combiner 221L, a beam splitter 222L, and a light shielding unit 230L, as shown in FIG. 7. The combiner 221L is configured to combine the display light PL11 for forming a display image with the external scene (external light PL21, PL41) in front of the user wearing the head mounted display 200 (in the +Z direction), and is extended below the lower edge of the optical path of the display light PL11 incident on the combiner 221L. The beam splitter 222L is disposed between the combiner 221L and the left eye EL of the user, and reflects the display light PL11 toward the combiner 221L and transmits the display light PL12 reflected by the combiner 221L. The light shielding unit 230L blocks the external light PL71, PL81 that passes through the combiner 221L, is reflected by the beam splitter 222L, and heads toward the left eye EL of the user. In FIG. 7, the display light PL11, the external light PL21, the external light PL71, and the like, which are the same as those in FIG. 4, are omitted.
[0063] The louver film 233L (233R) provided in the light shielding portion 230L of the head mounted display 200 according to the second modified example is disposed below the lower edge 222L1 of the beam splitter 222L, as shown in Fig. 7. The louver film 233L is a film with a limited viewing angle so as to transmit the outside scene (external light PL21, PL41) and shield the external light PL71, PL81. Note that the light shielding portion 230L may be disposed between the lower edge 222L1 of the beam splitter 222L and the lower edge 221L1 of the combiner 221L in the front-rear direction (Z direction) as shown in Fig. 7.
[0064] In the head mounted display 200 according to the second modified example, the light blocking portion 230L may be a light blocking plate 231L protruding from the lower edge 221L1 of the combiner 221L in front of the user (in the +Z direction). According to this configuration, the light blocking plate 231L can block the external light PL71 more effectively.
[0065] In the second modified example, the light shielding portion 230L is disposed below the lower edge 222L1 of the beam splitter 222L and has a louver film 233L (233R) that transmits the outside scene (external light PL41) and blocks external light PL71, PL81.
[0066] In the second modified example, even if strong light is incident on the upper (+Y side) surface of the light shielding plate 231L and the scattered light passes through the combiner 221L as external light PL81, the scattered light (external light PL81) is blocked by the louver film 233L before it enters the beam splitter 222L. Also, the louver film 233L may be capable of blocking not only the scattered light (external light PL81) but also the external light PL71 even when there is no light shielding plate 231L.
[0067] In addition, the head mounted display 200 may be configured such that the shading portion 230L blocks at least the external light PL71, PL81 that passes through the lower edge 221L1 of the combiner 221L, is reflected by the beam splitter 222L, and is incident at an angle toward the user's left eye EL, and the external light that is reflected at the lower edge 222L1 of the beam splitter 222L and is incident at an angle toward the user's left eye EL.
[0068] In the second modified example, the light blocking portion 230L has a light blocking plate 231L and a louver film 233L. However, in a configuration including the louver film 233L, the light blocking plate 231L may be omitted.
[0069] The light-shielding portion 230L having the louver film 233L in the second modified example can also be applied to the above-mentioned first modified example in which the structure of the combiner is modified. In this case, the louver film 233L is disposed below the lower edge 222L1 of the beam splitter 222L.
[0070] Although the present invention has been specifically described based on the embodiment, the present invention is not limited to the above embodiment, and various modifications can be made without departing from the spirit of the present invention. The above embodiment and the first and second modified examples can be appropriately combined. [Explanation of symbols]
