Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates to at least one C8-C 30 The present invention relates to surfactants comprising branched alkanol alkoxylates, methods for preparing said surfactants, articles comprising said surfactants, and uses thereof. [Background technology]
[0002] The application of alkanol alkoxylates as surfactants, emulsifiers, and antifoam agents is well known in the art. For example, nonionic surfactants characterized by low surface tension and excellent emulsifier properties applicable to hard surfaces can be obtained by alkoxylation of branched aliphatic alcohols.
[0003] However, with the ever-increasing environmental regulations and the desire for environmental sustainability, biodegradability is also a desired property of surfactants. It is well known that alkoxylated linear alcohols, such as fatty alcohols, are readily biodegradable. US Patent No. 4,925,587, US Patent No. 4,317,940, and US Patent No. 4,317,940 describe linear alcohols alkoxylated with blocks of polyethylene oxide (PO) and ethylene oxide (EO), which are readily biodegradable surfactants. The surfactants are based on linear alcohols, since the application of branched alcohols has a detrimental effect on biodegradability. It has been confirmed that alkoxylated branched alcohols do not show significant degradation, while significant degradation has been observed when surfactants based on linear alcohols are used. [0004] [Patent Document 1] U.S. Patent No. 4,925,587 [Patent Document 2] U.S. Patent No. 4,317,940 [Patent Document 3] U.S. Patent No. 4,317,940 Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0005] However, alkanol alkoxylates based on linear alcohols are not characterized by the excellent surface activity, e.g. wetting of various surfaces and emulsion stability, which can be compared to the alkoxylates obtained from branched alcohols, which, on the other hand, are not readily biodegradable.
[0006] As biodegradability is becoming more important in the application of branched alkanol alkoxylate surfactants with excellent surface activity, there is a need in the art for readily biodegradable surfactants derived from branched aliphatic alcohols.
[0007] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a biodegradable branched alkanol alkoxylate surfactant. It is a further object of the present invention to provide a method for preparing said biodegradable branched alkanol alkoxylate surfactant. [Means for solving the problem]

[0025] Surfactants of formula (I) R 1 -O-(CH2-CH2-O) n-(CH2-CH(R 2 )-O) m -(CH2-CH2-O) p -H (I) (In the formula, R 1 Branch C8~C 30 represents an alkyl or alkylene; R 2 represents methyl or ethyl; n is in the range of 3 to 10; m is in the range of 5 to 35; p is in the range of 0 to 25. is provided.
[0026] Surprisingly, R of formula (I) 1 The polyethylene oxide block adjacent to the group (EO)-(CH2-CH2-O) n Each of the alkanol alkoxylate surfactants of formula (I) having - has been found to be readily biodegradable.
[0027] R 1 The group is a branched alkyl or alkylene chain having from 8 to 30, preferably from 9 to 30, more preferably from 9 to 20, and even more preferably from 9 to 18 carbon atoms.
[0028] The branched alkyl chain radicals usually have a degree of branching of 0.1 to 4.5, preferably 1.0 to 3.5. The term "degree of branching" is used herein to mean the degree of branching of R 1 The average branching degree is defined as the number of methyl groups in the group minus one. The average branching degree is the statistical average of the branching degrees of all the molecules in the sample. It is the average of the branching degrees of the starting alcohol or of each surfactant made from it. 1 It can be determined by using H-NMR.
[0029] Preferably, R 1 The group is a branched alkyl chain having from 8 to 30, preferably from 9 to 30, more preferably from 9 to 20, and even more preferably from 9 to 18 carbon atoms.
[0030] According to a preferred embodiment, R 1 is selected from the group consisting of 2-dodecyl, 2-ethylhexyl, 2-propylheptyl, iso-tridecyl, 2-tetradecyl, 2-hexadecyl, 7-ethyl-3-decyl, 3-methyl-6-ethyl-2-nonyl, 2-hexadecyl, 2-octadecyl, 3-nonadecyl, 3-methyl-2-octadecyl, 3-methyl-2-hexadecyl, 3-heptadecyl, iso-decyl, iso-undecyl, iso-dodecyl, 2-butyloctyl, 2-pentylnonyl, and 2-hexyldecyl.

The transition between the blocks may be abrupt or continuous.
[0033] First EO-block -(-CH2-CH2-O-) n The value n ranges from 3 to 10, more preferably from 4 to 9, and even more preferably from 5 to 6. The said number is the average value of the distribution.

The alkenyloxy group is in the surfactant as -(-CH-CH(R 2 )-O-) m Orientation: -(CH(R 2 )-CH2-O) m Thus, the representation in formula (I) can be incorporated in the reverse orientation: 2 There is no restriction to any particular orientation of the groups.
[0036] Block -(-CH2-CH(R 2 )-O-) m The value m is in the range of 3 to 35, more preferably 5 to 20, and even more preferably 6 to 18. The said number is the average value of the distribution.
[0037] Second EO-block -(-CH2-CH2-O-) p The values p are, independently of one another, in the range of 0 to 25, more preferably 0 to 10, and even more preferably 0 to 5. The aforementioned number is also the average value of the distribution.

[0040] According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, when the value p is 1 or more, the value m is in the range of 10-35, more preferably in the range of 15-25, even more preferably in the range of 18-23.
[0041] Thus, according to another particularly preferred embodiment of the present invention, the surfactant of the present invention comprises R 1 is iso-tridecyl, R 2 is methyl, n is 5; m is 18, p is 2 A compound of formula (I).
[0042] When the value p is 0, the surfactant of formula (I) of the present invention has the structure R 1 -(-CH2-CH2-O-) n -(-CH2-CH(R 2 )-O-) m It is a diblock copolymer having the following structure:
[0043] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the value p is preferably zero.

[0052] The surfactant of formula (Ia) further comprises a polyalkylenyloxy moiety, where the polyalkylenyloxy moiety of formula (I) is -(-CH2-CH2-O-) q and -(-CH2-CH(R 2 )-O-) r units arranged in a block structure as shown in formula (Ia). The transition between the blocks may be abrupt or continuous.
[0053] EO-block-(-CH2-CH2-O-) q The value q is in the range of 3 to 10, more preferably 4 to 9, and even more preferably 5 to 6. The said number is the average value of the distribution.
[0054] Block -(-CH2-CH(R 4 )-O-) r Regarding R 4 The group is methyl or ethyl. 4 It is particularly preferred that the group is methyl. Thus, the block -(-CH-CH(R 4 )-O-) r is preferably a PO-block.
[0055] R 4 The orientation of the group depends on the alkoxylation conditions, e.g., the catalyst applied for the alkoxylation. The alkenyloxy group is in the surfactant as -(-CH-CH(R 4 )-O-) r Orientation: -(CH(R 4 )-CH2-O) r Thus, the representation in formula (Ia) can be incorporated in the reverse orientation: 4 There is no restriction to any particular orientation of the groups.
[0056] Block -(-CH2-CH(R 4 )-O-) r The value r is in the range of 3 to 35, more preferably 5 to 20, and even more preferably 6 to 18. The said number is the average value of the distribution.
[0057] Preferably, the ratio of q / r is in the range of 0.05 to 3.0.

[0063] According to yet another particularly preferred embodiment of the present invention, the surfactant of the present invention comprises R 3 is 2-propylheptyl, R 4 is methyl, q is 5, r is 15, A compound of formula (Ia).
[0064] According to a further particularly preferred embodiment of the present invention, the surfactant of the present invention is R 3 is iso-tridecyl, R 4 is methyl, q is 5, r is in the range of 16 to 23; A compound of formula (Ia).

[0066] The transition between the blocks of formula (I) and formula (Ia), if any, can be abrupt or continuous, depending on the process conditions for preparing the surfactant. A continuous transition between two blocks means that a transition zone is located between the two blocks, which includes the monomers of both blocks. For example, the first EO block of formula (I) -(-CH2-CH2-O-) n - is the block -(-CH2-CH(R 2 )-O) m - units, and may include a block -(-CH-CH(R 2 )-O)m - is the first EO block -(-CH2-CH2-O-) n - units, where said units are not statistically distributed throughout the block but are located in the transition zone. Thus, block structures within the meaning of the present invention mean that these blocks contain at least 85 mol %, more preferably 90 mol %, even more preferably 95 mol %, of the respective units, based on the total amount of the respective block.
[0067] As outlined above, the surfactants according to the present invention are biodegradable, and therefore it is preferred that the surfactants of formula (I) and (Ia) are biodegradable.
[0068] Preferably, biodegradability is achieved with a degradation rate determined according to OECD 301B or OECD 301F of at least 60%, more preferably at least 65%, even more preferably at least 70%.
[0069] The present invention also provides a process for preparing a surfactant of formula (I), comprising the steps of: a) Formula R 1 reacting an alcohol of OH with ethylene oxide under alkoxylation conditions; b) reacting the product obtained in step a) with propylene oxide or butylene oxide under alkoxylation conditions; and c) optionally reacting the product obtained in step b) with ethylene oxide under alkoxylation conditions, thereby obtaining a surfactant of formula (I). The present invention relates to a method comprising:
[0070] The surfactants of formula (I) are prepared using at least a two-stage process, in which in a first process step a) an alcohol R 1 OH is alkoxylated with ethylene oxide to give the formula R 1 -(EO) n (In the formula, R 1has the above meaning), which is subsequently alkoxylated with propylene oxide or butylene oxide in a second process step b). 1 -(EO) n -(PO) m To obtain a surfactant that is a diblock copolymer of formula R 1 -(EO) n The alkoxylated alcohol is alkoxylated with propylene oxide.
[0071] In optional method step c), a compound of formula R 1 -(EO) n -(PO) m -(EO) p A further alkoxylation step with ethylene oxide is carried out to obtain a surfactant which is a triblock copolymer of
[0072] The alkoxylation can be carried out, for example, using alkaline catalysts, such as alkali metal hydroxides or alkali metal alkoxides, which give rise to special properties, in particular the distribution of the degree of alkoxylation.
[0073] The alkoxylation can additionally be carried out using Lewis acid catalysis, in particular in the presence of BF3×H3PO4, BF3 dietherate, SbCl5, SnCl4×2H2O, hydrotalcite, from which special properties are obtained. Double metal cyanide compounds (DMC) are also suitable as catalysts.
[0074] In this process, the excess alcohol can be distilled off or the alkoxylates can be obtained by a two-stage process. Mixed alkoxylates can also be prepared, for example, from EO and PO, in which case a polyethylene oxide block can be attached to the alkanol group first, followed by an ethylene oxide block, or first an ethylene oxide block, then a propylene oxide block. Random distribution is also possible. The preferred reaction conditions are described below.
[0075] The alkoxylation is preferably catalyzed by a strong base, which is preferably an alkali metal hydroxide or an alkaline earth metal hydroxide, and is preferably an alkanoyl group R 1 OH or R 3 It is conveniently added in an amount of usually 0.1 to 1% by weight based on the amount of OH. (See G. Gee et al., J. Chem. Soc. (1961), p. 1345; B. Wojtech, Makromol. Chem. 66, (1966), p. 180.)
[0076] Acid catalysis of the addition reaction is also possible. In addition to Bronsted acids, Lewis acids such as AlCl3 or BF3 are also suitable. (See PH Plesch, The Chemistry of Cationic Polymerization, Pergamon Press, New York (1963)).

[0088] The DMC compounds can be used in the form of a powder, paste, or suspension, or can be molded into articles, incorporated into articles, foams, and the like, or coated on articles, foams, and the like.
[0089] The catalyst concentration used in the alkoxylation is typically less than 2000 ppm, preferably less than 1000 ppm, in particular less than 500 ppm, particularly preferably less than 100 ppm, for example less than 50 ppm, based on the final dosage range.
[0090] The addition reaction is carried out in a closed vessel at a temperature of about 90 to about 240° C., preferably 120 to 180° C. The alkylene oxide or a mixture of different alkylene oxides is added to the mixture of alkanol mixture and alkali according to the invention under the vapor pressure of the alkylene oxide mixture that is effective at the selected reaction temperature. If desired, the alkylene oxide can be diluted with an inert gas up to 30 to 60%. This ensures additional safety against explosion-like polyaddition of the alkylene oxides.
[0091] When alkylene oxide mixtures are used, polyether chains are formed in which the various alkylene oxide building blocks are distributed substantially randomly. The variation in the distribution of the building blocks along the polyether chain results from different reaction rates of the components and can also be achieved spontaneously by continuously introducing alkylene oxide mixtures of programmed composition. When different alkylene oxides are reacted one by one, polyether chains with a block-like distribution of the alkylene oxide building blocks are obtained.
[0092] The length of the polyether chains varies statistically within the reaction product about an average value which essentially corresponds to the stoichiometric value resulting from the amounts added.
[0093] To carry out the reaction, the catalyst is reacted with an alcohol R 1 OH or R 3OH can be added. Water still present in the mixture can be removed by using reduced pressure (e.g. <100 mbar) and / or by increasing the temperature (30-150° C.).
[0094] Thereafter, inert conditions are established with an inert gas (e.g. nitrogen) and ethylene oxide is added stepwise at a temperature of 60-180°C up to a pressure of up to 10 bar. Typically, no more than 1000 ppm of catalyst is used based on the mixture, and due to such low amounts, the catalyst may remain in the product. The amount of catalyst may generally be less than 1000 ppm, for example no more than 250 ppm.
[0095] However, the present invention is not limited to the use of double metal cyanide catalysts to carry out the alkoxylation. In principle, all processes leading to alkoxylated alcohols with narrower molecular weight distributions compared to base catalysis with KOH can be used with alcohols R 1 It can be used to alkoxylate -OH. In other words, D V / D KOH All methods with a ratio of <1 are suitable (D V is the polydispersity of the product obtained with the method used, D KOH is the polydispersity of the product obtained using KOH catalysis).
[0096] The surfactants of the present invention are applicable in a variety of applications and compositions.
[0097] The present invention is therefore further directed to the use of the surfactants as described above in cleaning formulations, cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations, finishing agents, coatings, paints, pigment preparations and adhesives, leather degreasers, textile industry formulations, fiber processing formulations for the pulp and paper industry, metal working formulations, oil production applications, oil field applications, tertiary oil production, food industry applications, water treatment, fermentation, mineral processing and dust control, building aids, emulsion polymerization and preparation of dispersions, coolants and lubricants.
[0098] The present invention is also directed to detergents, cleaning agents, wetting agents, coating materials, adhesives, leather fatliquors, moisturizers or textile processing compositions, additives for mineral building materials or cosmetics, additives for mineral oil formulations, pharmaceuticals or crop protection formulations which contain the surfactants as described above.
