AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing methods for generating hydrogen require the use of electrolytes, which can be costly and inefficient.

Method used

A method involving the connection of two stainless steel metal plates and a 12V battery without electrolytes, where an electric current is passed through the plates submerged in water to generate hydrogen gas.

Benefits of technology

This method effectively generates hydrogen gas without the need for electrolytes, making it a potentially more cost-effective and efficient process, and it can function with both direct and alternating currents, though high voltage is required for AC.

Abstract

To provide a method of generating hydrogen by the electrolysis of water.SOLUTION: Two metal plates are connected to a 12 V battery using a cable (power source) without using an electrolyte. Hydrogen is generated when an electric current is supplied. Two metal plates are installed in a container containing an appropriate amount of water so as to be completely immersed therein. The metal plates used are stainless steel plates each having a thickness of 0.1 mm and a size of 12 cm×10 cm. The two metal plates are fixed with a gap of 0.2 mm apart therebetween in such a way that sections each having a size of 10 cm×10 cm, which is a section of the entire metal plate less the area of the cable connection and the insulator, overlap with each other. The two metal plates are each used as a positive electrode and a negative electrode, which are connected using a cable. When electric current is supplied, water is decomposed to generate hydrogen gas, without requiring an electrolyte. The arrangement of the metal plates is suitable for a DC current. Hydrogen can be generated by an AC current, as well. However, a higher voltage is required. The specified dimensions of the area and the interval show the minimum dimensions thereof; however, various dimensions can be used. The thickness of the metal plate is preferably 0.1 mm or less.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1

Description

Summary of the Invention

[0001] No electrolyte is used, and two metal plates are connected to a 12V battery with a cable (power source). When an electric current is passed through it, hydrogen is produced. Place two metal plates in a container filled with an appropriate amount of water so that they are completely immersed. The metal plate is a stainless steel plate with a thickness of 0.1 mm and a size of 12 cm x 10 cm. The two sheets were fixed with a gap of 0.2 mm between them so that they overlapped over an area of 10cm x 10cm, excluding the area of the cable connections and insulator parts. Two metal plates are designated as positive and negative poles, and when they are connected with a cable and an electric current is passed through them, the water decomposes and hydrogen gas is produced. In this case, no electrolyte is required. The arrangement of the metal plates is suitable for direct current, but hydrogen can also be generated using alternating current, but this requires a high voltage. Area and spacing dimensions are specified but are minimums. But different dimensions are also possible. The thickness of the metal plate should be 0.1 mm or less. [Brief description of the drawings]
