Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] Technical Field
[0002] The present invention relates to a brake system with brake discs suitable for a vehicle.
[0003] In particular, the present invention relates to braking systems that suffer from overheating problems primarily due to their small footprint. [Background technology]
[0004] Background technology
[0005] In a disc brake, a brake caliper is generally arranged to straddle the outer periphery of a brake disc and adapted to rotate about an axis of rotation (AA) defining an axial direction (XX), further defining a radial direction (RR) substantially perpendicular to said axial direction (XX) and a tangential or circumferential direction (CC) perpendicular to both said axial direction (XX) and said radial direction (RR).
[0006] Brake calipers are constrained to a support structure that remains stationary relative to the vehicle wheel, for example a stub axle of a vehicle suspension, a vehicle wheel hub, a fork, etc. Brake calipers typically consist of a caliper body having two elongated portions arranged to face opposite braking surfaces of a brake disc, and at least one bridge connecting said two elongated portions to each other. A properly operating caliper presses the pads against the brake band, and the braking action is produced by friction between the pads and the brake band of the brake disc.
[0007] A solution for a disc brake device is known from document EP 1 122 456 B1 to the same applicant and shows the features according to the preamble of claim 1.
[0008] This known solution, although optimized to achieve other objectives including improved expansion of the brake band heated by the braking action, is not optimized to eliminate or minimize overheating, especially when the brake disc is intended for small spaces. Moreover, this solution is not suitable for applying the parking brake action on the same device, for example by a shoe device inserted in the driving bell and acting on its inner cylindrical surface.
[0009] Other similar solutions are known from EP 1092889 A1, EP 0680571 B1, DE 19528434 A1 and US Pat. No. 5,823,303 A.
[0010] Solutions have also been proposed that are adapted to increase the heat exchange between ventilated brake bands and the air passing through ventilation ducts inside the brake band.
[0011] For example, document WO2012 / 164465A1 shows a circular projection or boss provided on the radially outer periphery of a ventilation duct.
[0012] Document EP 2 192 321 A1 shows a circular projection or boss provided on the radially inner circumference of a ventilation duct.
[0013] Document DE102012024298A1 shows a similar projection on a ventilation duct.
[0014] In the document EP2469117A1 a pin for connecting two plates of an elongated brake band is shown, which is oriented at an incline at different angles in order to divert the cooling air flow. However, this solution uses the wall of the pin to divert the air and obstructs the ventilation duct in its entire axial extension, resulting in the formation of zones with poor cooling air flow, which in turn leads to uneven heat exchange and dangerous hot spots in the brake disc mass, which can lead to the occurrence of localized expansions and thus to localized ruptures.
[0015] The connection of the driving bell with the connecting fins of the brake band plate is known from EP 0 403 799 A2, EP 0 680 571 B1 or US 5 161 652 A. Here too, the connection of the radial extension of the driving bell with the fins creates zones of insufficient airflow or shadow zones which completely bypass the cooling air and thus lead to local overheating points on the brake disc, resulting in dangerous hot spots in the brake disc mass and leading to local expansion and thus to the occurrence of local ruptures.
[0016] Therefore, there is still a strong need to find brake band and brake disc shapes which make it possible to have optimized ventilation ducts, for example in cases where the brake disc is required to have a small footprint due to a lack of space in the wheel rim, leading to the occurrence of cooling problems.
[0017] This cooling problem is accentuated when the drive bell also forms an inner cylindrical surface, for example for drum-in-hat or DIH type parking brakes: in this case the axial bell extension is elongated, which worsens the air ingress into the brake disc ventilation ducts and makes the brake disc overheating even more pronounced.
[0018] This problem is further accentuated by the presence of the dust boot and the brake caliper itself which is positioned across the brake disc. Summary of the Invention
[0019] solution
[0020] The present invention aims to provide a braking system which has a reduced tendency to overheat.
[0021] These and other objects and advantages are achieved by the disc brake according to claim 1.
[0022] Some advantageous embodiments are the subject matter of the dependent claims.
[0023] Analysis of this solution has shown that the proposed solution makes it possible to achieve a much higher air permeability, in particular a better heat exchange between the brake band area and the cooling air, than prior art solutions. [Brief description of the drawings]
