Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] Common types of catheter assemblies include over-the-needle peripheral intravenous catheters ("PIVCs"). As the name suggests, over-the-needle PIVCs may be mounted over an introducer needle that has a sharp distal tip. The catheter assembly may include a catheter adapter, a PIVC that extends distally from the catheter adapter, and an introducer needle that extends through the PIVC. The PIVC and introducer needle may be assembled such that the distal tip of the introducer needle extends beyond the distal tip of the PIVC and the bevel of the needle points up and away from the patient's skin just prior to insertion into the skin. The PIVC and introducer needle are generally inserted at a shallow angle through the skin into the patient's vasculature. [Background technology]
[0002] To confirm proper placement of the introducer needle and / or PIVC within the blood vessel, the practitioner may observe the presence of blood flashback in the flashback chamber of the catheter assembly. In some cases, blood may progress into the introducer needle, exit the introducer needle's flashback notch, and reach the flashback chamber where blood is visible to the practitioner. Once placement of the introducer needle is confirmed by observation of blood, the practitioner may remove the introducer needle and leave the PIVC in place within the blood vessel for future blood withdrawals or infusions. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0003] Catheter assemblies often include a Luer adapter and a vent plug disposed within the Luer adapter. The vent plug provides protection for the Luer adapter and catheter assembly to prevent objects from entering the Luer adapter and to maintain a sterile environment within the catheter assembly. However, the vent plug often becomes dislodged from the Luer adapter during shipping or transportation of the catheter assembly, which results in loss of product integrity and rejection of the catheter assembly due to potential contamination.
