Blood Collection. Most people who give blood donate what we call "whole blood," meaning all of the components of blood are collected in a single bag to be separated in our component production lab. (The components of blood are Red Blood Cells, Platelets, Plasma and White Blood Cells.) In addition to whole blood donation,...

A blood collection device includes a needle hub with a flashback chamber and a vent plug covering the flashback chamber. The vent plug permits a flow of air across the vent plug but prevents a flow of liquid across the vent plug. An intravenous cannula is mounted to the hub and extends into the flashback chamber. A non-patient cannula is mounted to the hub and also extends into communication with the flashback chamber. A passive shielding device is mounted to the hub and can be moved from a proximal position where the intravenous cannula is exposed to a distal position where the intravenous cannula is partly shielded. The flashback chamber can be observed to provide an early indication of venous access. A fluid collection tube then can be placed in communication with the non-patient needle and can simultaneously trigger movement of the safety shield.

Sensor for blood component analysis

A sensor for blood component analysis, which allows even a trace amount of blood to be led to an analysis portion reliably. The sensor for blood component analysis includes a substrate, a spacer, and a cover. The cover is disposed on the substrate with the spacer intervening between the cover and the substrate, whereby a space that serves as an analysis portion and a channel for leading blood to the analysis portion is formed inside the sensor. Through holes are formed in the substrate and the spacer, respectively, so that a common through hole through which a needle of a lancet can pass is formed when the spacer is disposed on the substrate. The through hole of the spacer communicates with the channel and a top of the through hole of the spacer is covered with the cover, whereby a lancing portion is formed by the common through hole and a portion of the cover covering the top of the through hole of the spacer. In use, the sensor is placed at a position where blood collection is to be performed, the portion of the cover covering the lancing portion is broken through with the needle of the lancet so that the needle is allowed to pass through the common through hole to puncture the position, and blood that has come out is guided by a downwardly protruding burr formed when the cover is broken through so that the blood is led to the channel and flows through the channel to be led to the analysis portion.

Flash Activated Passive Shielding Needle Assembly

A safety needle device includes a housing including a passageway with a needle cannula extending therefrom. A shielding member is movable between a first position in which a puncture tip of the needle cannula is exposed therefrom and a second position in which the puncture tip of the needle cannula is encompassed therein. The shielding member is maintained in the first position against a biasing force which biases the shielding member toward the second position. A fluid and / or temperature activation material, such as a hydrogel or a compressed sponge, is associated with the shielding member and is adapted to deform upon contact with a fluid medium and / or a certain temperature or temperature range. Fluid flowing through the needle cannula, such as blood flow during a blood collection procedure, causes the activation material to deform, such as through expansion, thereby releasing the shielding member from the first position and allowing the drive member to bias the shielding member toward the second position.

The blood collection set includes an IV needle assembly, a length of flexible plastic tubing extending from the IV needle assembly and a non-patient needle assembly. The set is formed with a venting mechanism that permits an outflow of air, while blocking an outflow of blood or other fluids. Thus, the venting mechanism enables air that had existed in interior portions of the blood collection set to be vented allowing for greater flash visualization on venous entry, and avoids the need to employ a discard tube.

Safety blood collection holder

The present invention is a holder assembly having a holder housing, collar and safety shield. The safety shield is pivotably attached to the collar. The collar is receiving within a recess defined by the annular skirt and needle receiving port of the holder housing. The collar and attached safety shield may thus be rotated about the holder housing and an attached needle assembly, thereby allowing a user to freely position the safety shield during needle insertion and preventing the dislocation of safety shield from the holder housing.

Safety device for blood collection

A safety device for protecting the needle of a blood collector includes a guard member that automatically covers the needle, after a blood collection procedure has been completed. Prior to the procedure, the guard member is restrained on the device in a proximal position to expose the needle, and to thereby facilitate the insertion of the needle into a vein of a patient. When a blood collection vial is engaged with the device, the guard member is released to move distally over the needle. Thus, after a procedure, and as the needle is being withdrawn from the patient, the guard member covers the needle to protect against subsequent inadvertent “sticks”.

Self-sealing male Luer connector with molded elastomeric tip

A self-sealing male connector includes a tubular male body and an elastomeric resilient tip disposed on the distal end of the tubular male body. The elastomeric tip has a transverse size that is greater that the size of a female connector and a shape that differs from the female shape so that engagement of the two will result in reshaping the male tip to the shape of the female flow channel and the male will create a seal with the channel. The male tip is formed with a slit and a hollow core that provides a flow passage formed in the male body. As the male tip is reshaped due to engagement with a female connector, the slit opens to establish fluid flow through the male connector. In one embodiment, the transverse shape of the male tip is elliptical having a major axis along which the slit is formed. In one embodiment, the male tip is oversized in all transverse dimensions and forms an edge seal with the female connector at first contact. The proximal end of the male connector may be configured as a conventional female connector, a blood collection device, or other device. The male body can have a Luer shape.
