Method and apparatus for obtaining a sample of blood from a patient for subsequent diagnostic tests, e.g., glucose monitoring. In one aspect of the invention, the method comprises the steps of:

• • (a) placing a blood collection device over a region on the surface of the skin from which said sample is to be obtained,
  • (b) forming a seal between said blood collection device and said surface of the skin,
  • (c) creating a vacuum sufficient to result in said surface of the skin becoming stretched and engorged with blood,
  • (d) triggering a lancing assembly and causing a lancet to penetrate said skin,
  • (e) retracting said lancet,
  • (f) withdrawing blood toward and onto a fluid collector, and
  • (g) releasing the vacuum.

In another aspect of the invention, an apparatus for carrying out the method described previously is provided. The apparatus comprises:

• • (a) a housing having a sealable chamber located therein and a sealable opening in fluid communication with said sealable chamber,
  • (b) a power source,
  • (c) a vacuum pump operably connected to said power source, said vacuum pump in communication with said sealable chamber,
  • (d) a lancing assembly positioned within said housing, said lancing assembly capable of moving a lancet towards said sealable opening, and
  • (e) a fluid collector positioned in said sealable chamber, said fluid collector in fluid communication with said sealable opening.

The device comprises a blood collection system including a lancing needle (16), drive mechanism (11), kneading or vibration mechanism (25), optional suction system (7), and sample ejection mechanism. The device can optionally contain integral testing or analysis component (83) for receiving the sample and providing testing or analysis indication or readout for the user. A needle assembly is disclosed. The needle assembly includes a housing having a flash chamber, and having a distal end and a proximal end engageable with a specimen collection container. The assembly further includes a shield restrainably engaged with a portion of the housing and axially transitionable over the patient cannula from a retracted position in which the patient end is exposed, to an extended position in which the patient end is shielded by at least a portion of the shield, wherein at least a portion of the flash chamber is visible in the retracted position.

A safety needle and blood collection and sampling system precluding needlstick injury by contaminated needles wherein a used needle is captured immediately within its carrier upon retraction of the needle flush with the carrier. Blood sampling is effected without reverse flow through the system and without reuse or exposure of a contaminated needle. Simplified means of assembling the needle are also set forth to minimize cost with maximum reliability notwithstanding withstanding a minimum of components.

The present invention is a holder assembly having a holder housing, collar and safety shield. The safety shield is pivotably attached to the collar. The collar is receiving within a recess defined by the annular skirt and needle receiving port of the holder housing. The collar and attached safety shield may thus be rotated about the holder housing and an attached needle assembly, thereby allowing a user to freely position the safety shield during needle insertion and preventing the dislocation of safety shield from the holder housing.

A safety device for protecting the needle of a blood collector includes a guard member that automatically covers the needle, after a blood collection procedure has been completed. Prior to the procedure, the guard member is restrained on the device in a proximal position to expose the needle, and to thereby facilitate the insertion of the needle into a vein of a patient. When a blood collection vial is engaged with the device, the guard member is released to move distally over the needle. Thus, after a procedure, and as the needle is being withdrawn from the patient, the guard member covers the needle to protect against subsequent inadvertent “sticks”.

A self-sealing male connector includes a tubular male body and an elastomeric resilient tip disposed on the distal end of the tubular male body. The elastomeric tip has a transverse size that is greater that the size of a female connector and a shape that differs from the female shape so that engagement of the two will result in reshaping the male tip to the shape of the female flow channel and the male will create a seal with the channel. The male tip is formed with a slit and a hollow core that provides a flow passage formed in the male body. As the male tip is reshaped due to engagement with a female connector, the slit opens to establish fluid flow through the male connector. In one embodiment, the transverse shape of the male tip is elliptical having a major axis along which the slit is formed. In one embodiment, the male tip is oversized in all transverse dimensions and forms an edge seal with the female connector at first contact. The proximal end of the male connector may be configured as a conventional female connector, a blood collection device, or other device. The male body can have a Luer shape.

A blood collection set including a non-patient needle assembly interconnected with an intravenous needle assembly through tubing is provided. The non-patient needle assembly includes a hub assembly adapted for mounting with a blood collection set, and an internal blunting member including a blunted tip. The non-patient needle assembly further includes an external cannula concentric with the internal blunting member and including a non-patient puncture tip adjacent the blunted tip. The external cannula is axially displaceable with respect to the hub assembly between a first retracted position in which the non-patient puncture tip extends beyond the blunted tip and a second activated position in which blunted tip extends beyond the non-patient puncture tip.
