Method to determine the degree and stability of blood glucose control in patients with diabetes mellitus via the creation and continuous update of new statistical indicators in blood glucose monitors or free standing computers

Microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus are closely related to blood glucose levels and fluctuations. The Glycostator statistical package was created to allow patients and health care providers simple access to “glycemic indicators” which permit a “snapshot view” of the effectiveness of the patient's diabetes management program. Glycostator functions provide a simple way of enhancing the information already provided by home blood glucose monitoring devices. To this end, a set of new indices, including one called the Virtual A1c, are computed in a recursive fashion from blood glucose test results to provide a more meaningful day-to-day assessment of glycemic control. All indices can be made available at the meter user interface on request. The displayed indices allow patients to improve glycemic control by identifying problems with blood glucose control and lability that are less easily recognized in traditional blood glucose meter statistical packages. Virtual A1c emulates hemoglobin A1c continuously and provides better day-to-day assessment of long term glycemic control than does the traditional average blood glucose report. The method for computing each of these indices, including the Virtual A1c, allows for their implementation in commercial blood glucose monitors.

Remote wellness monitoring system with unversally accessible interface

This embodiment of the invention consists of an apparatus or home appliance unit embodied in a hardware entity running an embedded software program connected to a server computer via a phone line or high-speed internet. At home, the apparatus communicates with an optional set of medical health monitoring devices such as but not limited to, blood pressure monitors, blood glucose meters, and pulse oximeters using wired or wireless communications methods in order to perform wellness measurement. The illustrated embodiments of the invention provide a novel user interface on the home appliance to make the system accessible to people with disabilities. The simple user interface is designed to be accessible to people who are blind or deaf or people who cannot use their hands and require an alternative interface device such as a sip & puff controller. For the hearing impaired, the interface duplicates all speech and informational sounds with text or graphic cues. For the Blind, a Rotary knob provides tactile and audio feedback as the user navigates the system options. As every clockwise or counter-clockwise rotation of the knob brings a new option into focus, the user feels the click of the knob, and hears several audio cues including an audible click, a unique musical chime and a spoken description of the selectable option. For people who cannot use their hands to rotate the knob, alternative input controller devices, (such as a sip & puff controller) are supported through wired (such as but not limited to USB) or wireless (such as but not limited to Bluetooth, Zigbee IEEE 802.15.4, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi) connections. The home unit can further monitor wellness activity of the care recipient by pegging the number of times the care recipient passes by a infra-red motion sensor. The filtering of the latter information and subsequent integration over time and comparison with historical counts per unit of time within a 24 hour period can determine the normal activity pattern for the care recipient over the previous 24 hours.

Method for portably and rapidly detecting ochratoxin A

The invention discloses a method for portably and rapidly detecting ochratoxin A. The method comprises the following steps: first, preparing sucrose invertase-terminal alkyne modified DNA; subsequently, combining biotin-nitrine modified DNA with the surface of a magnetic bead, adding the ochratoxin A with different concentration, and mixing; adding the previously-prepared sucrose invertase-terminal alkyne modified DNA, a CuSO4 solution and an ascorbic acid solution, wherein the ascorbic acid solution can be used for reducing Cu(II) to obtain a Cu(I) compound so as to catalyze the biotin-nitrine modified DNA and the sucrose invertase-terminal alkyne modified DNA to have a click chemistry reaction; taking a supernatant liquor after the reaction is ended, then adding the supernatant liquor into a sucrose solution, wherein the sucrose invertase can effectively catalyze the sucrose in the solution to be transformed into glucose; and finally, measuring by adopting a glucometer. The method is used for organically combining the rapid reaction advantage of the click chemistry reaction with the high specificity characteristic of an aptamer, and adopting the simple and portable glucometer to acquire data, thus the operation complexity and detection cost are greatly reduced, and the sensitivity and selectivity are improved.
