[0054] Some embodiments of the present invention will now be described in detail in the following examples.
[0055] The modified carbohydrate polymers in the examples were characterized as follows.
[0056] Volatile matter and ash content (measured as sodium chloride) were determined as described in ASTM method D-2364.
[0057] Total Kjeldahl nitrogen content (TKN) was measured in binary series using a Buchi KjelMaster K-375 automated Kjeldahl analyzer. TKN values were corrected for volatile matter and ash content.
[0058] Example S1: Synthesis of branched cationic dextran polymer A 500 mL four-neck round bottom flask was charged with dextran (40.25 g, Ultradex 531 dextran powder) and deionized water (89.58 g). The flask was fitted with a stirring paddle and an electric motor. The mixture was stirred for approximately 40 minutes until the dextran was completely dissolved. After the dextran was dissolved, a 70% aqueous solution of 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (27.13 g, QUAB® 151 available from SKW QUAB Chemicals) was added to the mixture. The flask was fitted with a nitrogen inlet, a rubber serum cap, and a Claisen adapter connected to a subsurface thermocouple connected to a J-KEM controller, and a Friedrichs condenser connected to a mineral oil bubbler. The mixture was then stirred under nitrogen for 1 hour to remove any oxygen that had been trapped in the system. After the 1 hour nitrogen purge was completed, a 25% aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (6.35 g) was added and heat was applied to the reaction mixture using a J-KEM controller and a heating mantle. The heat setting was adjusted to 70° C. When the reaction mixture reached 70° C., a timer was started and the reaction mixture was allowed to react under nitrogen for 4 hours.
[0059] After 4 hours at 70°C, the reaction mixture was cooled in a water bath while maintaining a positive nitrogen pressure in the flask. The reaction mixture was neutralized by adding glacial acetic acid (2.5 g) using a syringe and stirring the mixture for 10 minutes. A 50 mL portion of the cationic dextran solution was retained as a solution for rheological characterization, and 1% EUXYL PE 9010 preservative was added to the retained solution. The remainder of the polymer was then recovered from the aqueous solution by non-solvent precipitation from methanol. A Waring blender was charged with 700 mL of methanol and approximately 20 mL of the polymer solution was added slowly and continuously at a gentle mixing speed. High speed mixing results in undesirable peptization of the polymer precipitate. At the onset of the methanol non-solvent opacification, the precipitated polymer was recovered by filtering through a set of nested #40 and #80 US Standard sieve screens. The Waring blender was charged with fresh methanol and non-solvent precipitation of the remaining aqueous solution was continued. The polymer was briefly air-dried and then dried overnight in vacuum at 50°C. The dried polymer was manually ground using a mortar and pestle and screened through a U.S. Standard #30 sieve. A white solid was obtained (43.13 g) with a volatile matter content of 4.04%, an ash content (as sodium chloride) of 0.85% (measured as described in ASTM Method D-2364), and the Kjeldahl nitrogen content of the product polymer was determined to be 1.71% (corrected for volatile matter and ash) using a Buchi KjelMaster K-375 autoanalyzer, corresponding to a CS value of 0.243.
[0060] Comparative Examples CF1-CF3 and Example F1: Fabric Care Compositions Fabric care compositions having the formulations set forth in Table 1 were prepared in each of Comparative Examples CF1-CF3 and Example F1 and were prepared according to standard laundry formulation preparation procedures.
[0061] [Table 1]
[0062] Silicone adhesion during cleaning The silicone wash deposition of the silicone-containing fabric care compositions was evaluated for each of the compositions of Comparative Examples CF1-CF3 and Example F1 on cotton. A Speed Queen TR7 (Model No. AWNE9RSN116TW01) top-loading washing machine was used for the evaluation. Four Kohl's The Big One® washcloths (100% cotton) were used in each washing machine. All Kohl's fabrics were stripped prior to use in these wash evaluations to remove any treatments applied during manufacture. Washing was performed using heavy duty spin mode with light soil levels and medium wash loads (approximately 59 L). The temperature was set to cold / cold and the water temperature was adjusted to 70°F. The water was diluted with 2:1 Ca 2+ :Mg 2+ The detergent was cured to 150 ppm by molar ratio. The detergent dosage used was 0.5 g detergent / liter of water. After three machine cycles were completed, the fabric was tumble dried in an industrial dryer on high heat setting until dry. Additional ballast was added to the dryer to equal 6 pounds. After drying, the fabric was hung in a constant temperature and humidity chamber and conditioned for 24 hours at 21° C. and 65% relative humidity. After conditioning the fabric, the fabric was tested using a PhabrOmeter® Model 3 10 kg device to evaluate softness. The results are provided in Table 2.
[0063] [Table 2]
[0064] Predictive soil redeposition prevention test The soil redeposition prevention of the fabric care compositions was evaluated for each of the compositions of Comparative Examples CF1-CF3 and Example F1 on four types of fabric (cotton interlock, cotton, polyester / cotton blend, cotton terry) under typical wash conditions (ambient wash temperature, water hardness: 200 ppm, 3:1 molar ratio Ca 2+ :Mg 2+The fabric is evaluated by washing with Terg-O-tometer using a detergent dosage of 0.5g / L under 100% water (1L / wash) with 60 minutes washing and 3 minutes rinsing. Orange (high iron content) clay slurry (0.63g, Red Art Clay) and dust sebum dispersion (2.5g) are the soil loadings. After washing is complete, the fabric swatches are dried and read with Mach5 color instrument, and the Whiteness Index (WI) is calculated according to ASTM E313. The results show that the fabric care composition of Example F1 exhibits desirable anti-redeposition performance compared to the comparative formulation.
