Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present disclosure relates to an aerosol generating article. The present disclosure further relates to an aerosol generating system. [Background technology]

[0002] It is known to provide an aerosol-generating device for producing an inhalable vapour. Such a device may heat an aerosol-forming substrate contained in an aerosol-generating article without combusting the aerosol-forming substrate. The aerosol-generating article may have a rod shape for inserting the aerosol-generating article into a heating chamber of the aerosol-generating device.

[0003] The aerosol-generating device may comprise a heating arrangement, which may be an inductive heating arrangement and may comprise an induction coil configured to inductively heat the susceptor, which may be part of the device or part of the aerosol-generating article.

[0004] As the aerosol-generating article heats up, some structural reorganization of the aerosol-forming substrate within the article may occur. This may be due to thermal processes, such as a reduction in volume due to the continuous volatilization of volatile components of the aerosol-forming substrate. This may reduce the thermal contact between the aerosol-forming substrate and the heating element during use. This may result in a change in the drawing resistance during use.

[0005] It would be desirable to provide an aerosol-generating article with improved heating performance. It would be desirable to provide an aerosol-generating article with improved thermal contact with a heating element during use.It would be desirable to provide an aerosol-generating article with improved control of withdrawal resistance. It would be desirable to provide an aerosol-generating article with a more consistent withdrawal resistance during use.

[0006] It would be desirable to provide an aerosol-generating article that allows for improved removal of a used aerosol-generating article from the heated chamber of an aerosol-generating device.

[0007] It is desirable to provide an aerosol-generating article that allows a user to visually detect whether the article is a new article or a used article.

[0008] It is desirable to provide an aerosol-generating article that exhibits reduced fouling. Summary of the Invention

[0009] According to an embodiment of the present invention there is provided an aerosol-generating article comprising a heat-shrinkable wrapper. The aerosol-generating article may comprise an aerosol-forming substrate portion, the heat-shrinkable wrapper may at least partially surround the aerosol-forming substrate portion.

[0010] According to an embodiment of the present invention, there is provided an aerosol-generating article comprising an aerosol-forming substrate portion and a heat-shrinkable wrapper at least partially surrounding the aerosol-forming substrate portion.

[0011] During use of the aerosol-generating article, the aerosol-forming substrate is heated to vaporize the compound of the aerosol-forming substrate. Thereby, the heat-shrinkable wrapper surrounding the aerosol-forming substrate portion may also be heated, for example, by heat transfer from the aerosol-forming substrate. When heated, the heat-shrinkable wrapper may shrink or contract in the area where it surrounds the aerosol-forming substrate. The shrinkage of the heat-shrinkable wrapper may reduce the outer diameter of the aerosol-generating article during use in that area.

[0012] A user may visually verify whether the aerosol-generating article includes at least a component having a reduced diameter. An aerosol-generating article may be provided that allows a user to visually detect whether the article is new or used.

[0013] For example, at least a portion of the aerosol-generating article comprising the aerosol-forming substrate portion may be inserted into a heating chamber of an aerosol-generating device to heat the aerosol-forming substrate portion. Shrinkage of the heat-shrinkable wrapper during heating may reduce the circumference of the aerosol-generating article. In other words, the diameter of the aerosol-generating article may decrease. This may improve the extractability of the aerosol-generating article from the heating chamber after use.

[0014] During heating, volatile compounds of the aerosol-forming substrate may be vaporized. The mass and density of the aerosol-forming substrate may thereby be reduced during heating. The reduced density may result in a reduced pull-out retention force. Contraction of the heat-shrinkable wrapper may compress the heated aerosol-forming substrate. The reduced density may thereby be reduced. The reduced pull-out retention force may be reduced. An aerosol-generating article may be provided with improved control of pull-out resistance. An aerosol-generating article may be provided with a more consistent pull-out resistance during use.

[0015] Contraction of the heat-shrinkable wrapper during heating may result in compression or compaction of the aerosol-forming substrate portion. Improved nicotine delivery may be provided. Improved structural stability of the compressed aerosol-forming substrate portion may be provided. Improved thermal conductivity of the compressed aerosol-forming substrate portion may be improved. This may improve the efficiency of heating.

[0016] The aerosol-generating article may be configured as a heat-non-combustion article. The heat-non-combustion article may be configured for use with an aerosol-generating device.

[0017] The aerosol-generating article may comprise a susceptor element, which may be arranged to be inductively heated by an inductor coil of an aerosol generating device.

[0018] The susceptor element may be surrounded by the aerosol-forming substrate portion. The susceptor element may be centrally disposed within the aerosol-forming substrate portion.

[0019] Contraction of the heat-shrinkable wrapper during heating may compress or compress the aerosol-forming substrate portion towards the susceptor element, which may provide improved thermal contact between the susceptor element and the aerosol-forming substrate portion, which may improve the efficiency of heating.

[0020] During use, the aerosol-forming substrate portion comprising the susceptor element may be heated by an inductor coil of the aerosol generating device. At least a portion of the heat-shrinkable wrapper surrounding the aerosol-forming substrate portion may also be heated and shrunk. When the heat-shrinkable wrapper shrinks, it may lead to the shrunken wrapper pushing the aerosol-forming substrate towards the centrally disposed susceptor. Thermal contact between the susceptor element and the aerosol-forming substrate may be improved. Heating efficiency may be improved.

[0021] The heat shrink wrapper may at least partially surround one or more fastening elements, which may be one or both of a filter element, a hollow tubular element, and a front plug.

[0022] The fastening element may provide additional structural stability to the aerosol-generating article comprising the heat-shrinkable wrapper. When exposed to heat, the heat-shrinkable wrapper may shrink in an area surrounding the aerosol-forming substrate portion. Another area of the heat-shrinkable wrapper may surround the fastening element. This other area of the heat-shrinkable wrapper may not shrink or shrink very little during use. For example, the material of the fastening element may have sufficient rigidity to prevent the heat-shrinkable wrapper from substantially shrinking in that area. For example, the fastening element may not heat much during use, so that the heat-shrinkable wrapper may not heat much or may heat very little in the area of the fastening element. Thereby, in the area where the heat-shrinkable wrapper is fastened to the fastening element, there may be little structural change during use. Durable fastening of the heat-shrinkable wrapper may be provided. Improved structural stability of the aerosol-generating article may be provided.

[0023] The aerosol-generating article may be at least partially inserted into the cavity of the aerosol-generating device during use. The outer diameter of the aerosol-generating article and the inner diameter of the cavity may be approximately the same or similar. The aerosol-generating article may be held by a friction fit within the cavity. At the location of the fixing element, the diameter of the aerosol-generating article may not shrink or may shrink very little during use. Thus, the fixing element may help maintain the friction fit of the aerosol-generating article within the cavity during use. At least a portion of the cavity may be configured as a heating chamber of the aerosol-generating device.

[0024] The aerosol-generating article may comprise a front plug disposed at a distal end of the aerosol-generating article. The front plug may comprise a filter material. A heat shrink wrapper may at least partially surround the front plug. The front plug may be disposed as a fastening element.

[0025] The length of the front plug may be at least 4 millimetres, preferably at least 5 millimetres, more preferably at least 6 millimetres. The length of the front plug may be measured along the longitudinal axis of the aerosol-generating article.

[0026] For example, having an anterior plug with a length of 4 millimeters or more may improve the fixation effectiveness of the anterior plug as compared to shorter anterior plugs. The increased length may allow a larger portion of the heat shrink wrapper to surround and thus be structurally supported by the fixation element.

[0027] The ratio between the length of the front plug and the length of the aerosol-forming substrate portion may be at least 0.3, preferably at least 0.4, more preferably at least 0.5. The length of the front plug and the length of the aerosol-forming substrate portion may be measured along the longitudinal axis of the aerosol-generating article.

[0028] The length of the aerosol-forming substrate portion may be from 7 mm to 17 mm, preferably from 9 mm to 15 mm, more preferably from 11 mm to 13 mm, more preferably about 12 mm.

[0029] The total length of the aerosol-generating article may be 40 mm to 50 mm, preferably about 45 mm. The length of the aerosol-forming substrate portion along the longitudinal direction of the aerosol-generating article may be 20% to 35% of the total length of the aerosol-generating article, 24% to 30% of the total length of the aerosol-generating article, more preferably about 27% of the total length of the aerosol-generating article.

[0030] The density of the aerosol-forming substrate portion may be 0.3 grams / cubic centimeter to 1 gram / cubic centimeter, preferably 0.4 grams / cubic centimeter to 0.9 grams / cubic centimeter. If the density of the aerosol-forming substrate portion is low, for example, less than 0.3 grams / cubic centimeter, the aerosol-forming substrate portion is easily compressed, and the aerosol-generating article may shrink more than intended. If the density of the aerosol-forming substrate portion is high, for example, more than 1 gram / cubic centimeter, the aerosol-forming substrate portion becomes almost incompressible, and the aerosol-generating article may be prevented from substantially shrinking during use.

[0031] The aerosol-forming substrate portion may have a density of 0.5 grams per cubic centimeter or less. The aerosol-forming substrate portion may have a density of 0.24 grams per cubic centimeter to 0.45 grams per cubic centimeter. The aerosol-forming substrate portion may have a density of 0.24 grams per cubic centimeter to 0.4 grams per cubic centimeter, 0.24 grams per cubic centimeter to 0.34 grams per cubic centimeter, 0.24 grams per cubic centimeter to 0.3 grams per cubic centimeter, or 0.24 grams per cubic centimeter to 0.34 grams per cubic centimeter. The aerosol-forming substrate may have a density of about 0.28 grams per cubic centimeter.

[0032] As used herein, the "density" of an aerosol-forming substrate portion refers to the mass of the aerosol-forming substrate in the aerosol-forming substrate portion divided by the volume taken up by the aerosol-forming substrate when in the aerosol-generating article. The "mass" of the aerosol-forming substrate does not include the mass of any packaging material surrounding the aerosol-forming substrate portion. The "volume" taken up by the aerosol-forming substrate does not include the volume of any packaging material surrounding the aerosol-forming substrate portion.

[0033] The aerosol-forming substrate of the aerosol-forming substrate portion may comprise an aerosol former. The aerosol former may comprise a polyhydric alcohol or a mixture thereof. The aerosol former may comprise or consist of glycerin.

[0034] The aerosol-forming substrate may have an aerosol former content of 5 percent or more by weight on a dry weight basis, preferably 5 to 30 percent by weight on a dry weight basis. The aerosol-forming substrate may have an aerosol former content of 10 percent or more by weight on a dry weight basis, preferably 10 to 30 percent by weight on a dry weight basis. The aerosol-forming substrate may have an aerosol former content of 15 percent or more by weight on a dry weight basis, preferably 15 to 30 percent by weight on a dry weight basis.

[0035] The aerosol-generating article may comprise one or more hollow tubular elements. The one or more hollow tubular elements may comprise one or both of hollow acetate tubes (HAT) or fine hollow acetate tubes (FHAT). Such hollow tubes are cylindrical components made of cellulose acetate and provided with a centrally disposed axial hole. The dimensions of the hollow tube, such as the outer diameter of the hollow tube and the outer diameter or diameter of the hole, may vary and can be designed according to the requirements of each product.

The aerosol-generating article may be disposable. The aerosol-generating article may be insertable into a heating chamber of an aerosol-generating device.

[0086] As used herein, the term "aerosol-generating device" refers to a device that interacts with an aerosol-forming substrate to generate an aerosol. The aerosol-generating device may interact with an aerosol-generating article that includes the aerosol-forming substrate. In some examples, the aerosol-generating device may heat the aerosol-forming substrate to facilitate the release of volatile compounds from the substrate. An electrically operated aerosol-generating device may include an atomizer, such as an electric heater, for heating the aerosol-forming substrate to form an aerosol.

[0087] As used herein, the term "aerosol-generating system" refers to the combination of an aerosol-generating device with an aerosol-forming substrate. When the aerosol-forming substrate forms part of an aerosol-generating article, the aerosol-generating system refers to the combination of an aerosol-generating device with an aerosol-generating article. In an aerosol-generating system, the aerosol-forming substrate and the aerosol-generating device work together to generate an aerosol.

[0088] As used herein, the term "proximal" refers to the user end or mouth end of the aerosol-generating article, and the term "distal" refers to the end opposite the proximal end.

[0089] As used herein, "susceptor" or "susceptor element" means an element that heats up when subjected to an alternating magnetic field. This may be the result of eddy currents, hysteresis losses, or both eddy currents and hysteresis losses induced in the susceptor element. In use, the susceptor element is positioned in thermal contact or in thermal proximity with an aerosol-forming substrate received in an aerosol generator or cartridge. In this manner, the aerosol-forming substrate is heated by the susceptor, thereby forming an aerosol.

[0090] The susceptor material may be any material that can be inductively heated to a temperature sufficient to aerosolize the aerosol-forming substrate. The following examples and features of the susceptor may apply to one or both of the susceptor element of the cartridge, the susceptor of the aerosol-generating device, and the susceptor of the aerosol-generating article. Suitable materials for the susceptor material include graphite, molybdenum, silicon carbide, stainless steel, niobium, aluminum, nickel, nickel-containing compounds, titanium, and composites of metallic materials. Advantageously, the susceptor material may include or consist of ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic materials, such as ferritic iron, ferromagnetic alloys, such as ferromagnetic steel or stainless steel, ferromagnetic particles, and ferrites. A suitable susceptor material may be or include aluminum. The susceptor material may contain more than 5 percent, preferably more than 20 percent, more preferably more than 50 percent or more than 90 percent ferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic, or paramagnetic material. Preferred susceptor materials may be heated to temperatures in excess of 250 degrees Celsius without degradation.

[0091] Test method A Five square samples, each having a side length of 10 millimeters, are cut from the heat shrink wrapper.

[0092] The samples are conditioned in air at 23° C.±2° C. and 50%±5% relative humidity for at least 40 hours.

[0093] The sample is then heated in an oven at 120°C ± 2°C for 5 minutes.

[0094] The samples are then removed from the oven and cooled to 23°C + / - 2°C. The linear dimensions of each of the five samples are then recorded in both the machine and cross directions. From the five recorded values, average values in both the machine and cross directions are determined. The average value is determined by dividing the sum of the five measurements in millimeters by five.

[0095] Length shrinkage percentages are calculated for each machine and cross direction by dividing the respective average values by 10 millimeters and multiplying by 100.

[0096] Shrinkage percentage areal shrink is calculated by multiplying the machine direction average by the cross direction average and dividing the product by square millimeters. EXAMPLES
