[0007] The embodiments of the present invention are discussed in detail below. In describing the embodiments, specific terminology is used for clarity. However, the present invention is not intended to be limited to the specific terminology so selected. Although specific exemplary embodiments are discussed, it should be understood that this is done for illustrative purposes only. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that other components and configurations can be used without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention. All references cited herein are incorporated by reference as if each were individually incorporated.

[0008] All parts and percentages are by weight unless otherwise indicated. As used herein, the term "about" refers to plus or minus 10% of the indicated value. Unless otherwise specified or evident from the context, percentages by weight are given relative to the total amount of the composition being described. As used herein, the singular forms "a," "an," and "the" include plural referents unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. Described herein is a cosmetic composition containing Swertia japonica extract, hyaluronic acid and a retinoid. Also disclosed herein is a method for improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and smoothing the skin by topically applying the cosmetic composition to the skin.

[0009] Swertia chiretta extract Swertia japonica, also known as Swertia japonica, is an ancient Ayurvedic herb that produces four sloping green-yellow flowers with a purple tint. It is native to the Himalayan ranges and is found in the high altitude foothills. The main component of the extract contains swerthiamarin, which belongs to the iridoid family of molecules typically found in medicinal plants. The extract of Swertia japonica stimulates the proliferation of keratinocytes to regenerate thin epidermis and improve the appearance of aged and wrinkled skin. It has been found to have anti-aging properties through a biomimetic pathway to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, especially vertical wrinkles. The mechanism of action is based on stem cell therapy using intercellular communication between adipose-derived stem cells (ADSC) and keratinocytes through the action of growth factors that auto-renew the skin, Swertia japonica releases these growth factors that have been shown to promote keratinocyte proliferation, resulting in a thicker epidermis with a greater number of keratinocyte layers. The resulting thicker epidermis fills in existing wrinkles due to a resurfacing effect. In an exemplary embodiment, the Swertia japonica extract is a Swertia japonica leaf extract. An exemplary embodiment of the Swertia japonica extract contains a relatively large amount of Swertiamarin, for example at least 80%, at least 85% or at least 90% Swertiamarin. As an alternative to the Swertia japonica extract, Swertiamarin can be added. Thus, as used in the compositions described herein, the Swertia japonica extract and Swertiamarin are used interchangeably, and the ingredients can be added as the Swertia japonica extract or as Swertiamarin.

[0010] In an embodiment of the present invention, the cosmetic composition contains about 0.005% to about 0.5% by weight of Swertia japonica extract (or Swertiamarin). For example, the composition may contain about 0.005% to about 0.10% by weight, 0.01% to about 0.1% by weight, about 0.005% to about 0.050% by weight, or 0.015% to about 0.040% by weight of Swertia japonica extract (or Swertiamarin). In an exemplary embodiment, the composition may contain about 0.005%, about 0.010%, about 0.015%, about 0.020%, about 0.025%, about 0.030%, about 0.035%, about 0.040%, about 0.045%, or about 0.050% by weight of Swertia japonica extract (or Swertiamarin). In a preferred embodiment, the composition contains about 0.030% by weight Swertia japonica extract (or Swertiamarin). An exemplary source of the Swertia japonica extract is SWT-7™ available from Lucas Meyer Cosmetics (Paris, FR). SWT-7 is a formulation containing Swertia japonica extract that contains a high amount of Swertiamarin and is titrated to 1.25% Swertiamarin. SWT-7™ is sold as a water-soluble powder (SWT-7™ H) and as a fat-soluble liquid (SWT-7™ L). In an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, the Swertia japonica extract is added as SWT™-7H. This Swertia japonica extract is also described in U.S. Patent Application Publication No. 2017 / 0020796, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.

[0011] Hyaluronic acid According to the present invention, the terms "hyaluronic acid" and "HA" refer to both the free acid and any pharma- ceutically acceptable salts thereof, such as sodium hyaluronate, including, but not limited to, alkali metal salts, such as potassium hyaluronate and sodium hyaluronate. According to the present invention, HA can be derived from any source, including but not limited to synthetic and natural sources. Previously, HA was extracted from rooster combs. However, this ancient method has faced increasing concerns over the use of animal-derived ingredients in biomedical, pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications. HA can also be produced via fermentation with streptococci, which results in lower production costs, less environmental pollution, and produces a mixture of HA with different molecular weights. Other recent HA production processes include recombinant production from Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, such as Bacillus sp., Lactococcos lactis, Agrobacterium sp. and Escherichia coli. Furthermore, recombinant microorganisms such as Bacillus and E. coli are endotoxin-free, which makes them a safe alternative source of HA products. HA with different molecular weights can be obtained by selective production methods that yield specific molecular weight ranges or by controlled hydrolysis of higher molecular weight HA.

[0012] According to the present invention, the HA used in the composition may be linear, cross-linked, or cross-linked with other components. Typically, the HA has a molecular weight of about 1 kDa to about 20,000 kDa. In one embodiment of the present invention, the composition contains one or more HAs having a molecular weight of about 1 kDa to about 2000 kDa. The HA may be present in a single molecular weight range or as a mixture of HAs exhibiting different molecular weight ranges. The HA may have a low molecular weight range, e.g., less than about 50 kDa, a medium molecular weight range, e.g., about 50 kDa to about 1000 kDa, or a high molecular weight range, e.g., greater than about 1000 kDa. The HA used in the composition of the present invention may be in a single molecular weight range, i.e., low molecular weight range HA, medium molecular weight range HA, or high molecular weight range HA, or may be a mixture of two or more of low molecular weight range HA, medium molecular weight range HA, and high molecular weight range HA. The HA of different molecular weight ranges can be added as individual commercially available compositions of a particular molecular weight range that can be added individually, or as a premix, or can be provided as a commercially available mixture of HA having different molecular weights. A preferred embodiment of the invention uses a mixture of low, medium and high molecular weight range HA.

[0013] An exemplary source of HA is BP-Triluronic™ Acid, which is a combination of three different HAs of different molecular weights: 1) high molecular weight HA having a molecular weight of about 1500 kDa to about 2000 kDa; 2) medium molecular weight HA having a molecular weight of about 300 kDa to about 500 kDa; and 3) low molecular weight HA having a molecular weight of about 12 kDa to about 15 kDa. Another exemplary source of HA is HyaCare® Filler CL, which is crosslinked HA with a 3D network structure. Another exemplary source of HA is the hyaluronic acid from EES Cosmetic Solutions, which contains HA having a molecular weight ranging from about 5 kDa to about 11 kDa. In an embodiment of the present invention, the cosmetic composition contains about 0.001% to about 2.0% by weight of HA from one or more sources. In an embodiment of the present invention, the composition contains about 0.001% to about 2.0% by weight, about 0.001% to about 1.5% by weight, about 0.001% to about 1.0% by weight, about 0.001% to about 0.5% by weight, about 0.001% to about 0.1% by weight, about 0.001% to about 0.075% by weight, or about 0.001% to about 0.050% by weight of HA. In another embodiment of the present invention, the composition contains about 0.001% to about 0.050% by weight of HA. In an embodiment of the invention, the composition contains about 0.001% HA by weight, about 0.005% HA by weight, about 0.010% HA by weight, about 0.015% HA by weight, about 0.020% HA by weight, about 0.025% HA by weight, about 0.030% HA by weight, about 0.035% HA by weight, about 0.040% HA by weight, about 0.045% HA by weight or about 0.050% HA by weight. A preferred embodiment of the composition contains about 0.002% HA by weight or about 0.050% HA by weight.

[0014] Retinoids Retinoids are a class of compounds that are derivatives and analogues of vitamin A and are used in cosmetics and medicines to regulate epithelial cell growth and treat photoaging and skin wrinkling. Four types of retinoid production are commonly recognized: • First produced retinoids, such as retinol, retinal, tretinoin (i.e., retinoic acid or retin-A), isotretinoin, and alitretinoin. • Second generation retinoids, such as etretinate and its metabolite acitretin. • Third generation retinoids, such as adapalene, bexarotene and tazarotene. • Fourth generation retinoids, e.g. trifarotene. Among known retinoids, retinol is highly recommended by dermatologists to help slow down the signs of skin aging and maintain a youthful appearance.Retinol is the form of vitamin A that occurs naturally in human skin. When used regularly in topical treatment, retinol can help improve skin firmness, visually suppress the appearance of fine lines and deep wrinkles, and even help minimize the appearance of dark circles around the eyes and around the eyes.

According to the present invention, the combination of Swertia chiretta extract, hyaluronic acid and retinoids work synergistically together to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, including vertical lines also known as "11 lines", measured both immediately after application (i.e., within 5 minutes or after the product is absorbed into the skin) and over a longer period of time. Test subjects showed fine lines and wrinkles that were lifted and filled in within approximately 5 minutes of applying the cosmetic composition to the skin (see FIG. 1). After 4 weeks of application, test subjects showed improvement in the appearance of difficult-to-treat wrinkles and visible improvement in skin texture (see FIG. 2). In fact, after 8 weeks, test subjects saw an effective reversal of 10 years of wrinkles. An additional benefit of the cosmetic composition is its ability to fill wrinkles quickly and efficiently, avoiding the use of needles and pain associated with typical injectable fillers. Furthermore, injectable fillers are costly and require regular visits to a qualified medical practitioner. Furthermore, the results of these fillers are entirely dependent on the practitioner's skill, and the results may not consistently meet patient expectations. Thus, cosmetic compositions provide synergistic or complementary benefits when used in combination with injectable fillers.

[0024] In some embodiments, fine lines and wrinkles that may be targeted for reduction include those on the forehead, lips, brow, under the eyes, nasolabial folds, and crow's feet. In some embodiments, the cosmetic composition is applied to cleansed skin of the face and / or neck.
