Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to a pesticide composition, a precision application device containing such a composition, and its use.

Background Art

[0002] Pesticides are biologically active materials such as herbicides, fungicides and insecticides used by farmers and growers to control weeds, insects and fungal pests on, onto or around crops. Typically, pesticides are supplied as concentrates that are diluted with water prior to application to form the final composition to be applied. Typically, the diluted pesticide composition is applied by spray application. Spray application enables a large area to be treated in a relatively short time. Sprays can be applied manually, with spray equipment mounted on a dedicated tractor, or even by aircraft, depending on the scale of application. Conventional pesticide sprays generally rely on supplying a diluted pesticide formulation under pressure to produce fine spray particles in a fan or conical shape from a nozzle. This enables a relatively uniform application of the diluted pesticide over a relatively wide area by the sweep of the sprayer.

[0003] In recent years, it has been recognized that in some applications, rather than treating the entire field area uniformly, it may be more advantageous to use a more targeted application of pesticides. For example, if individual weeds can be identified by an automatic identification system connected to an automatic application system, this system should be able to apply herbicides only to these weeds. Similarly, if individual plants parasitized by insects or fungi can be identified, it should be possible to treat only these parasitized plants with insecticides or fungicides. Alternatively, for crops grown in regular rows, it is possible to apply herbicides only to the gaps between the rows. For herbicides, the use of non-selective herbicides (those that kill substantially all plants) targeted at weeds in the crop plants being cultivated may become possible. For all types of pesticides, it may also be possible to use pesticides at lower average levels across the field, reducing the farmer's costs and the amount of pesticides in the environment. This targeted spray application is known as "precision application".

[0004] "Precision application" is defined as the application of pesticides to individual locations of the target site rather than over the entire area (broadcast application). Types of precision application include, but are not limited to, variable rate application using covered / banded application, prescription maps, and optical spot spraying. Precision application also includes this type of targeted application in the use of non-row crop species such as inter-row application or fruit tree spraying. For all types of precision application, the application equipment is likely to require dedicated nozzles to direct the pesticide product more accurately, and typically these will be, but are not limited to, narrow-angle hydraulic nozzles or jet-type nozzles. The most advanced precision application type is optical spot spraying, which includes, in addition to, or instead of, standard application equipment, an imaging system and an analysis system to determine the application location.

[0005] For precision application, different types of spray patterns are required than those of the prior art. By its nature, a precision spray is not intended to spread out and cover a large area. Instead, ideally, it should land precisely on the targeted location and nowhere else. This requires a spray pattern of fine jets of liquid or narrow-angle fan-shaped fine droplets, rather than the conventional wide-angle fan or cone shape.

[0006] It has been found that problems occur when applying liquid pesticides in water with high precision, rather than a wide spray. This problem is that a significant proportion of the spray tends to bounce off or break up as small droplets and land at some distance from the target. This causes the pesticide to spread, and not all of it lands precisely where intended, but also lands on nearby plants and soil. This undermines the whole concept of precision application. When a non-selective herbicide is used on target weeds, nearby crop plants may be damaged or die. For any pesticide, additional pesticides need to be applied to compensate for the material wasted by reaching unwanted locations.

[0007] The problem is further exacerbated because many pesticide compositions contain surfactants and emulsifiers. Some of these are included to improve the physical or chemical stability of the pesticide concentrate, or to improve and maintain the dispersion of the diluted pesticide in the spray tank. Others are included to enhance the biological effect of the pesticide by improving the spreading performance on the surface of the target plant or the penetration performance into the outer surface of the target plant, insect or fungus for the diluted composition. Due to these surfactant properties, such materials increase the formation of small droplets when the liquid lands on the surface, thus exacerbating the problem of movement outside the target. Therefore, it is highly desirable to reduce movement outside the target, and the inventors herein refer to this as reducing the fragmentation of the composition.

[0008] "Droplet breakup" is defined as the splitting of a primary droplet having a nominal diameter upon impact with a surface, which subsequently results in a greater number of smaller secondary droplets that fall outside the initial impact zone. "Reduction of breakup" is thus defined as the reduction rate of the total number of secondary droplets due to a change in composition or compared to a reference composition. Therefore, there is a need for low-breakup compositions suitable for precision application uses and devices. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION MEANS FOR SOLVING THE PROBLEM

[0009] In a first aspect of the present invention, therefore, pesticides; gum diutan; and a composition comprising a carrier fluid is provided, wherein the gum diutan is present in an amount of 0.001 to 2% by weight, wherein the carrier fluid comprises water and is present in an amount of 65 to 95% by weight.

[0010] Surprisingly, the composition according to the present invention has been found to solve the above technical problem. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0057] Methodology Formulation preparation: All polysaccharides were prepared as 1% gels in deionized water by high-shear mixing before use.

[0058] The spray solution was prepared by completely mixing the required amounts of components defined in the following table. In all cases, the remaining amount up to 100% by weight was water as the carrier fluid.

[0059] Sulfacid Blue 5J was introduced into the spray solution at a final concentration of 0.5% w / w.

[0060] Spray evaluation To evaluate the effectiveness of the polysaccharide in reducing the fragmentation of the composition, a special spray evaluation method was developed. A custom electrostatic spray rig equipped with a jet-type nozzle operating at 3.0 ± 0.1 bar was constructed. The target surface was placed 10 cm below the nozzle tip, which was a circular synthetic fabric substrate (D = 20 mm) on a cylindrical support (20 mm × 80 mm) unless otherwise specified. This surface had a contact angle of 133 ± 2° with deionized water and was used to reproduce water-repellent foliage.

[0061] The formulation was charged into the spray rig and the operating parameters were adjusted so that a spray solution dosage of 14 ± 1 mg was reliably applied to the target. Below the supported target surface, A4 paper was placed to capture stray spray and visualization was assisted with a blue dye. For each spray condition, a total of 10 sprays were carried out and collected (e.g., 10 repetitions for 10 sheets of paper).

[0062] Compositions 1 - 27 were sprayed with a jet-type nozzle and compositions 28 - 30 were sprayed with a flat fan nozzle.

[0063] The fragmentation performance was evaluated as follows. Ten sheets of A4 capture paper were digitized using a Brother DS-720D scanner operating at 600 dpi. The digitized data was then analyzed using a custom ImageJ macro to collect information on the number of droplets, their arrangement, and area. The performance was evaluated by analysis of the total number of droplets, where reduction in fragmentation was characterized by the rate of decrease in the total number of droplets.

[0064] The results are shown in Tables 2 - 7.

[0065] Figure 1 shows the digitized droplet position data for formulation entries 16, 17, 18, and 21, demonstrating a significant improvement in the performance of the compositions according to the present invention.
