AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing cellular communication networks face challenges in enabling multicast services for user equipment (UEs) in the RRC_INACTIVE state, particularly for scalability and power saving, without individually paging each UE, especially for privileged UEs that require different treatment.

Method used

Implementing a mechanism where UEs in RRC_INACTIVE state receive messages indicating multicast/broadcast service sessions and determine whether to resume a radio resource control connection based on subset membership, using indications and configurations to manage RRC states dynamically, allowing privileged UEs to remain in RRC_INACTIVE for multicast reception.

Benefits of technology

Enhances multicast service delivery to UEs in RRC_INACTIVE state by optimizing network resource usage and power consumption, ensuring efficient and scalable multicast reception for both privileged and non-privileged UEs.

Abstract

According to an aspect of an embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a method comprising: receiving, by a device when the device is in a radio resource control inactive state, the message including a first indication indicating a multicast broadcast service session to which the device has joined and a second indication indicating to remain in the radio resource control inactive state; and in response to receiving the message, initiating a resumption of a radio resource control connection if the device determines, based on at least the information received in the radio resource control message, that it belongs to a subset of user equipment, and remaining in the radio resource control inactive state if it does not determine that it belongs to the subset.
