Abstract

This invention provides a vibration damping device and a method for designing such a device that can simultaneously tune to multiple natural vibration modes without increasing the installation space or weight. [Solution] The system includes a weight 2 attached to the building 11 (the structure to be damped) via a first spring 3, a first damping element 4 provided in parallel with the first spring 3 between the building 11 and the weight 2, and an inertial mass element 5, a second spring 7, and a second damping element 6 provided in parallel with the first spring 3 and the first damping element 4 between the building 11 and the weight 2. The inertial mass element 5 and the second damping element 6 are provided in parallel, and the second spring 7 is provided in series with the inertial mass element 5 and the second damping element 6. The period of the vibration system composed of the weight 2, the first spring 3, and the first damping element 4 is set to tune to one natural vibration mode of the building 11, and the period of the vibration system composed of the inertial mass element 5, the second damping element 6, and the second spring 7 is set to tune to another natural vibration mode of the building 11.
