Abstract
Description
[Technical Field]
[0001] The present invention relates to a personal care composition comprising a rheological gelling agent. The present invention also relates to a rheological gelling agent for a personal care composition. The present invention has particular application, but is not limited to, in the treatment and / or modification of skin, lips, and / or keratinous fibers. The present invention also relates to a method for producing the personal care composition. [Background technology]
[0002] Rheological gelling agents are typically used to impart viscosity control, flow, leveling, and other rheological properties to the composition. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0003] Organoclays can also function as rheology modifiers in non-aqueous systems by increasing the viscosity of low- to medium-polarity carriers such as mineral oils, fats, oils, and other aliphatic compounds. Organoclays provide beneficial rheological modifications to the oil phase of emulsions, improving product stability and allowing viscosity buildup without the need for excessively high levels of long-chain fatty alcohols.
[0004] Organoclays are generally prepared by reacting clay with organic cations, particularly quaternary ammonium ions, using a variety of methods known in the art. When the organic cation has at least one alkyl group containing at least 8 to 22 carbon atoms, such organoclays have viscosity-enhancing properties in organic systems. Viscosity-enhancing properties can be modified by altering the substituents on the quaternary ammonium ion. For example, it has been reported that the viscosity efficiency of organoclays has been improved by replacing the alkyl group on the quaternary ammonium ion with 2-hydroxyethyl, polyoxyethylene, and ester groups. [Means for solving the problem]
[0005] According to a first aspect, the present invention provides a personal care composition comprising at least one personal care ingredient and a rheological gelling agent, the rheological gelling agent comprising: (i) an organoclay; (ii) a glyceryl ester activator; and (iii) comprising or consisting essentially of a carrier.
[0006] It has been advantageously discovered that formulations containing certain types of rheological gelling agents surprisingly result in personal care compositions having improved rheological properties.
[0007] According to a second aspect, the present invention provides a method for making a composition according to the first aspect described herein, wherein a rheological gelling agent and at least one personal care ingredient are combined in an oil phase and / or subjected to shear mixing.
[0008] According to a third aspect, the present invention provides a method of applying a composition according to the first aspect described herein, wherein the composition is subjected to shear stress when applied to the skin, lips and / or keratinous fibres.
[0009] According to a fourth aspect, the present invention provides a rheological gelling agent for use in a personal care composition, the rheological gelling agent comprising: (i) an organoclay; (ii) a glyceryl ester activator; and (iii) comprising or consisting essentially of a carrier.
[0010] In a fourth embodiment, the rheological gelling agent is as defined for the rheological gelling agent according to the first embodiment described herein. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0014] Generally, the term "personal care," including when used in the context of the term "personal care products," refers to non-therapeutic applications, such as non-therapeutic cosmetic applications.
[0015] The present invention provides a personal care composition, which comprises at least one personal care ingredient.
[0016] In certain embodiments, the personal care ingredient is selected from the group consisting of antioxidants, antiperspirants, bulking agents, cleansing agents, colorants, deodorants, emulsifiers, exfoliants, eyelash conditioning agents, film formers, foaming agents, hair and / or skin conditioning agents, humectants, moisturizers, fragrances, skin protectants, slip modifiers, leveling agents, surfactants, tanning agents, UV filters / absorbers, and combinations of two or more thereof. For the avoidance of doubt, the personal care ingredient is not water.
[0017] Additionally or alternatively, the personal care ingredient is selected from the group consisting of fatty substances, organic solvents, oily structurants, surfactants, emulsifiers, thickeners, organic cationic deposition polymers, demulcents, opacifiers, additional colorants, effect pigments, additional stabilizers, emollients, antifoaming agents, moisturizers, antioxidants, vitamins, peptides, amino acids, botanical extracts, particulates, fragrances, preservatives, polymers, fillers, sequestrants, propellants, alkalizing or acidifying agents, or mixtures thereof. In certain embodiments, one or more additional personal care ingredients typically incorporated into cosmetic or other compositions according to the present invention are also present.
[0018] Generally, personal care ingredients are non-therapeutic ingredients, such as non-therapeutic cosmetic ingredients.
[0019] Clays, such as smectite clays, are commercially important minerals and are well known in the art. Properly processed smectite clays are excellent thickeners, binders, film formers, softeners, and retention aids. These clays are 2:1 layered silicates with an expansive structure. They are highly colloidal and readily swell in water to form viscous thixotropic gels, making them useful as thickeners in many industries. For example, they are used to control the rheology of compositions in industrial applications such as coatings (e.g., paints).
[0020] Smectite clays (e.g., hectorite clays, bentonite clays) are products formed, for example, by the decomposition of igneous rocks. Therefore, while clays are relatively abundant in the environment, their chemical composition can vary from one sedimentary layer to another. These chemical variations result in differences in, for example, the charge composition, density, impurity content, and crystallite size of the clay layers. To address these variations, smectite clays have been synthesized on an industrial scale. These synthetic clays have a uniform charge density and are substantially free of impurities. As a result, synthetic clays behave quite differently from natural clays, for example, when used as rheological additives. Crude natural smectite clays contain both clay and impurities. In certain embodiments, such crude clays are beneficiated or refined to remove some or all of the impurities in the crude clay.
[0021] Smectite clay is a layered, plate-like, hydrophilic silicate material. In its dry state, it typically consists of multiple nano-sized clay layers stacked on top of each other, and these stacks (tactoids) form particulate aggregates. However, when dry clay powder is dispersed in water, the clay plates spontaneously separate from each other. This "delamination" is also called "exfoliation." Smectite clay layers carry a net negative charge on the platelets that is neutralized by metal cations located on the surface of the platelets.
[0022] Organoclays are formed by the exchange of metal cations with organic cations. This reaction can be partially or completely complete. Organic surface treatments are often required to improve the compatibility of the clay with organic systems. Similar to "untreated" inorganic clays in water, organoclays can also exfoliate in organic systems (solvents, polymers). That is, the clay layers with added organic cations separate from each other as they are exfoliated in the system.
[0023] Generally, organoclays are layered silicate clays in which the interlayer metal cations have been exchanged for organic cations. Thus, organoclays are layered silicate clays with interlayer organic cations. The organic cations are generally quaternary ammonium ions.
[0024] Typically, the organoclay is a smectite clay (e.g., the layered silicate clay is a smectite clay). In certain embodiments, the smectite clay is a montmorillonite, bentonite, hectorite, saponite, stevensite, and / or beidellite clay.
[0025] Preferably, the smectite clay is a hectorite clay, a bentonite clay, or a mixture thereof. In certain embodiments, the smectite clay is a hectorite clay. In certain embodiments, the smectite clay is a bentonite clay. More preferably, the smectite clay is a hectorite clay.
[0026] Quaternary ammonium ions are generally represented by [NR 1 R 2 R 3 R 4 ] + where R 1 , R 2 and R 3 Each of the C1-C 22 Alkyl groups, such as C1-C 18 Alkyl groups, especially C1-C 12 It is an alkyl group, preferably a C1-C8 alkyl group.
[0027] R 4 is a straight chain C1-C6 alkyl group, C6-C 10 aryl groups, and combinations of two or more thereof.
[0028] R 4 is a straight chain C1-C6 alkyl group, C6-C 10 The aryl group and the C1-C6 alkyl moiety are straight-chain C6-C 10 Aryl-C1-C6 alkyl groups (e.g., C6-C 10 aryl-straight-chain-C1-C6 alkyl group). More preferably, R 4is a phenyl group, a benzyl group, a methyl group, an ethyl group, a propyl group, a butyl group, a pentyl group, or a hexyl group. 4 is a benzyl group, a methyl group, an ethyl group, a propyl group, a butyl group, a pentyl group, or a hexyl group.
[0029] In general, R 1 , R 2 and R 3 At least one of the following is branch C 12 -C 22 It is a mixture of alkyl groups, each of which has a linear backbone and one or more branched C1-C3 alkyl groups distributed at different carbon positions along the linear backbone of the branched alkyl group.
[0030] By way of example, each branched alkyl group has a total of 12 to 18 carbon atoms, preferably a total of 14 to 18 carbon atoms.
[0031] R 2 and R 3 Preferably, at least one of R is not a branched alkyl group. 2 and R 3 At least one of or R 2 and R 3 Both are straight chain C1-C 22 Alkyl groups, preferably straight chain C1-C 12 Alkyl groups, more preferably straight chain C1-C6 alkyl groups or straight chain C7-C 11 Alkyl groups, especially straight chain C1-C6 alkyl groups.
[0032] As an example, R 2 and R 3 is methyl, and R 4 is benzyl. In another example, R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are each methyl.
[0033] R 1When is a branched alkyl group, the branched alkyl group has an average number of branches per branched alkyl group of at least 0.7, for example, an average number of branches per branched alkyl group of 0.7 to 7, preferably 0.7 to 5, and more preferably 0.7 to 3. The methyl branches typically account for at least 50% of the branched alkyl groups based on the total number of branches.
[0034] Additionally or alternatively, R 1 When is a branched alkyl group, the branched alkyl group is N + and having a distribution of branching points distributed along the linear backbone of the branched alkyl groups ranging from the 2 carbon atom position to the ω-2 carbon atom position of the linear backbone, counting from the 1 carbon atom position attached to
[0035] As an example, R 1 The linear backbone of the branched alkyl group contains less than 0.5 atomic percent quaternary carbon atoms. 1 The linear backbone of a branched alkyl group is substantially free of quaternary carbon atoms.
[0036] Typically, the organoclay contains sufficient quaternary ammonium ions to provide 50 to 150 percent (e.g., 50 to 100 percent) of the cation exchange capacity of the layered silicate, for example, 90 to 140 percent (e.g., 90 to 100 percent) of the cation exchange capacity of the layered silicate, particularly 95 to 130 percent of the cation exchange capacity of the layered silicate. When the quaternary ammonium ions exceed the exchange capacity, the positive charge of the quaternary ions is balanced by inorganic anions, organic anions, or anionic polymers. Examples of organic anions are described in U.S. Pat. No. 5,718,841, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.
[0037] In certain embodiments, the organoclay is present in an amount of about 5% to about 30% by weight, preferably about 5% to about 25% by weight, and more preferably about 8% to about 20% by weight, based on the total weight of the rheological gelling agent.

In other words, it refers to a compound in which at least one of the alcohol groups (e.g., hydroxy groups) in glycerol has been esterified (e.g., formed an ester group). Thus, a glyceryl ester active contains at least one glyceryl group and at least one ester group.
[0039] Preferably, the ester group of the glyceryl ester active agent is a fatty acid ester group, in other words, the ester group is derived from a fatty acid (e.g., derived by reaction with an alcohol group of glycerol).
[0040] As used herein, the term "aliphatic" refers to a substituted or unsubstituted straight-chain, branched, or cyclic hydrocarbon that is fully saturated or unsaturated (preferably containing only one or more double bonds) and is not aromatic.
[0041] Generally, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are fatty acids with fatty chains of 5 or fewer carbons (e.g., butyric acid), medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) are fatty acids with fatty chains of 6 to 12 carbons, long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) are fatty acids with fatty chains of 13 to 21 carbons, and very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) are fatty acids with fatty chains of 22 or more carbons.
[0042] Saturated fatty acids have no C=C double bonds. Unsaturated fatty acids have one or more C=C double bonds, each of which may be in a cis or trans configuration.

[0069] According to a second aspect, the present invention provides a method of making a composition according to the first aspect described herein, in which a rheological gelling agent and at least one personal care ingredient are combined in an oil phase and / or subjected to shear mixing.
[0070] According to a third aspect, the present invention provides a method of applying a composition according to the first aspect described herein, wherein the composition is subjected to shear stress when applied to the skin, lips and / or keratinous fibres.
[0071] The compositions of the present invention exhibit a variety of previously unknown properties and are advantageously used in personal care compositions suitable for meeting a variety of aesthetic and application standards, for example, they provide rheology control, prevent sagging of ingredients, and impart desirable feel characteristics to consumer formulations in a variety of application areas.
[0072] Personal care compositions can be divided into two product categories: leave-on and rinse-off. Many of them are actually perfumed to provide a pleasant fragrance as an important consumer benefit. While leave-on products such as creams and lotions certainly face the aforementioned challenges, rinse-off products such as shampoos, conditioners, and body washes face even more challenges due to the loss of key fragrance ingredients during the washing / cleansing process. Therefore, as a major unmet consumer need, fragrance retention or persistence has been intensively studied in the personal care and cosmetics industries. In certain embodiments, these compositions are leave-on or rinse-off compositions.
[0073] In certain embodiments, the compositions are household, cosmetic, or beauty formulations and / or products. Glyceryl esters are naturally derived and milder than the active agents used in combination with organoclays in industrial applications.
[0074] Cosmetics range from compressed dry powders to liquid suspensions, from single-phase solid or liquid formulations to emulsifiers. The amount of composition used varies depending on the system and the required performance criteria. The properties imparted by the organoclay dispersion composition are beneficial in various ways to various cosmetic products. For example, the advantages of using the organoclay composition of the present invention include: Stick products (lipstick, antiperspirant): Maintain uniformity during the melting and setting stages, improve application, increase high temperature stability, eliminate oil migration, and reduce "wrinkles" around the lips and eyes.
[0075] Mascara: Improves film formation, increases water resistance and eliminates oil migration.
[0076] Emulsions: Increase the dropping point temperature of water-in-oil creams, eliminate syneresis, improve emulsion stability, enable cold process emulsification, and create new viscosity effects.
[0077] UV Sunscreen: Eliminates whitening issues with ultrafine TiO2 particles, increases sun protection factor (SPF), optimizes the use of sunscreen active ingredients, and reduces separation and sedimentation.
[0078] Antiperspirant aerosol: Evenly distributes active ingredients, leaving skin feeling soft and dry, significantly reducing whitening and preventing separation and sedimentation.
[0079] For the avoidance of doubt, the phrase "consisting essentially of" as used herein limits the scope of a feature to the specified materials and other materials or steps, e.g., trace impurities, that do not materially affect the basic and novel properties of the feature. The phrase "consisting essentially of" encompasses the phrase "consisting of."
