[0029] 1 , the surgical generator 300 includes a display 310, a number of user interface features 320, e.g., buttons, touch screens, switches, etc., one or more energy ports, e.g., an ultrasonic plug port 330, and a monopolar electrosurgical plug port 340. Other suitable energy ports are also contemplated, e.g., bipolar plug ports, advanced energy plug ports, microwave plug ports, etc. The surgical generator 300 further includes a number of pump plug ports 350.

[0030] The surgical generator 300 further includes an ultrasonic generator module 400 configured to generate an ultrasonic drive signal for output through the ultrasonic plug port 330, and a monopolar electrosurgical module 500 configured to generate a monopolar RF signal for output through the monopolar electrosurgical plug port 340. Of course, if additional or alternative energy is provided, additional or different modules would be provided as well. The surgical generator 300 additionally includes a pump assembly 600 including a plurality of pumps 654 (e.g., first, second... and "n" pumps 654) configured to provide pump outputs through a plurality of pump plug ports 350 (e.g., first, second... and "n" pump plug ports 350). The pump assembly 600 is described in more detail below. Additionally, in embodiments, one or more common plug ports may be provided that are configured as both a pump plug port 350 and an energy plug port (e.g., an ultrasound plug port 330, a monopolar electrosurgical plug port 340, a universal smart plug port configured to receive and provide an appropriate output to any suitable energy plug, or any other suitable energy plug port).

[0031] With regard to control of the surgical generator 300, one or more general purpose controllers (not explicitly shown) may be provided for controlling the various modules, components, and features of the surgical generator 300. Additionally or alternatively, one or more dedicated controllers (not explicitly shown) may be provided for individually controlling one or more of the various modules, components, and features of the surgical generator 300.

[0032] 2, the pump assembly 600 may be incorporated within the surgical generator 300 (FIG. 1), as detailed above, or may be incorporated into another surgical component, e.g., an instrument, console, system, etc., or may be configured as a stand-alone device. The pump assembly 600 generally includes a motor 610 having a motor output 612, a plurality of transmissions 622 (e.g., first, second... and "n" transmissions 622), each of which includes a transmission assembly 620 coupled to the motor output 612, a plurality of pumps 630 (e.g., first, second... and "n" pumps 630) coupled to the respective transmissions 620, a plurality of pump outputs 640 (e.g., first, second... and "n" pump outputs 640) coupled between the respective pumps 630 and the pump plug port 350, and a controller 650.

[0033] The motor 610 may be any suitable motor configured to provide any suitable motor output 612, e.g., a rotational output, a reciprocating output, a rotational and reciprocating output, etc., to the transmission assembly 620. The motor 610 is more specifically connected to each pump 630 via a separate transmission section 622 of the transmission assembly 620. The transmission assembly 620 is configured to selectively amplify, attenuate, maintain, and / or transform the motor output 612, as needed, into a respective transmission output 624 provided to the pump 630. In some cases, the transmission assembly 620 may not transform the motor output 612, and thus one or more transmission outputs 624 may be equal to the motor output 612. Additionally or alternatively, in some cases, the transmission assembly 620 may not provide a transmission output 624 from one or more transmission sections 622 regardless of the received motor output 612.

[0034] As described in more detail below, the transmission assembly 620 allows a single motor, motor 610, to independently and selectively provide different types and / or levels of power to the pumps 630 such that each pump 630 may be operated in a desired manner independent of the operation of the other pumps 630a. Additionally, this configuration also allows a single motor, motor 610, to drive different types of pumps 630, and still further allows the motor 610 to provide a single output (rather than a variable output), although variable output motor configurations are also contemplated. One or more pumps 630 may be different from the other pumps 630. Alternatively, all of the pumps 630 may be of the same type. The pumps 630, whether the same or different, may include any suitable pump type, such as, for example, centrifugal pumps, peristaltic pumps, diaphragm pumps, gear pumps, lobe pumps, roller pumps, piston pumps, screw pumps, vacuum and / or pressure pumps, hydraulic pumps, etc.

[0035] 2, as noted above, transmission assembly 620 is configured to receive motor output 612 from motor 610 and selectively provide transmission output 624, which may be the same or a different type and / or level of output, to pump 630. Motor 610 is described below as providing rotary motor output 612 to transmission assembly 620, although other suitable outputs are contemplated.

[0036] The transmission assembly 620, in an embodiment, includes a common input 626 configured to receive the rotary motor output 612 from the motor 610. The common input 626 may be coupled to the motor output 612, for example, by gearing, pulleys, cables, or the like, or any other suitable manner, and may be coupled therein to provide a 1:1 input-to-output ratio, an attenuated output ratio, or an amplified output ratio. The common input 626 is then coupled to a plurality of transmission inputs 628, for example, by gearing, pulleys, cables, or the like, to provide the rotary motor output 612 (whether amplified, attenuated, or maintained) to each of the transmission sections 622 via the transmission inputs 628. The coupling between the common input 626 and each transmission input 628 may provide similar or different output ratios to the transmission sections 622, for example, a 1:1 input-to-output ratio, an attenuated output ratio, or an amplified output ratio.

[0037] Each transmission 622 is selectively connectable to a transmission output 624 for output to receive a corresponding transmission input 628 and drive a corresponding pump 630 according to the transmission output 624 provided thereto. For example, with respect to rotational output, the rotational speed of the transmission output 624 can be set by the transmission 622 regardless of the motor output 612 to drive the pump 630 in a desired manner, e.g., with the same or different flow rate, pressure, flow velocity, etc.

[0038] Transmission section 622 may be similar or different and may include any suitable transmission configuration(s) that allows for selectively varying the transmission output relative to the transmission input. Suitable transmission configurations include a stepless transmission, a gearbox transmission, a dual clutch transmission, a magnetic direct drive transmission, and combinations thereof. Regardless of the particular configuration, transmission section 622 may also include a release clutch (or other suitable release mechanism) that allows for selectively decoupling the input to transmission section 622 from the output of transmission section 622 so as to inhibit the output regardless of the input.

[0039] Each transmission section 622 is configured to selectively amplify, attenuate, or maintain a corresponding transmission input 628 provided thereto for output to a respective pump 630 via a corresponding transmission output 624. The transmission section 622 may additionally be configured to convert the transmission input 628 provided thereto into a different type of output, for example, converting a rotary input to a reciprocating output, or vice versa. Additionally or alternatively, the transmission section 622 may be configured to selectively switch the direction of the rotational transmission input 628 compared to the direction of the rotary transmission output 624, for example, from clockwise to counterclockwise, or vice versa.

[0040] 2, the one or more transmissions 622 may be fixed, for example, to provide the same input-to-output ratio, and / or the one or more transmissions 622 may be variable, for example, to allow for continuous or stepped adjustment of the input-to-output ratio depending on the needs of the pump 630 or an instrument connected thereto. In this manner, a single motor output 612 from the motor 610 may be utilized to drive pumps 630 in similar or different ways and / or at similar or different levels to meet the needs of a variety of different instruments, systems, consoles, etc. connected to the pump assembly 600. Stopping one or more pumps 630 and / or reversing the direction of one or more pumps 630 may also be easily accomplished without changing the motor output 612.

[0041] The controller 650 includes a processor 652 and a memory 654 that stores instructions executed by the process. The controller 650 may further include an input / output (I / O) 656 and a communication bus 658. The I / O 656 enables communication between the pump assembly 600 and external modules, components, and / or devices. The communication bus 658 enables communication between the controller 650 and the transmission 622 and the pump 630, for example. In this manner, instructions may be provided as input to the generator 300, for example, and / or received by the controller 650 via the I / O 656 from an instrument or other device connected to one of the pump plug ports 350 (via RFID communication or other suitable detection) based on a particular detected device connected to one of the pump plug ports 450, to enable the controller 650 to control the configuration of the transmission(s) 622 to provide an appropriate output to the corresponding pump(s) 630, for example, via the communication bus 658. The controller 650 may additionally or alternatively receive feedback from the pump 630 via a communication bus 658 and, based thereon, control the configuration of the transmission section(s) 622 to maintain appropriate parameters as part of a feedback-based control loop.

[0042] Although several embodiments of the present disclosure have been described in detail above and shown in the drawings, it is intended that the present disclosure is not limited to these embodiments, as the present disclosure is as broad as the art will permit, and the specification is intended to be read in the same manner. Therefore, the above description and the accompanying drawings should not be interpreted as limiting, but merely as illustrations of certain embodiments. Those skilled in the art will envision other modifications within the scope and spirit of the claims appended hereto.
