Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention is in the field of metal cutting and, more particularly, of cutting tools equipped with vibration damping means. [Background technology]

[0002] The present invention relates to a turning tool according to the preamble of claim 1. In other words, the invention relates to a cutting tool for cutting metals comprising a tool body with an insert seat and formed with a recess, the tool body being provided with vibration damping means.

[0003] In the highly competitive metal cutting industry, increasing productivity is crucial to reduce manufacturing costs in metal cutting processes. To increase productivity, there is a constant demand for faster machining speeds and shorter cycle times. To meet these demands, process parameters such as cutting speeds, feed rates, and depth of cut must be increased. Increasing process parameters can lead to regenerative or chatter vibrations in slender cutting tools. These vibrations often cause loud noise during the cutting process, poor surface finish, and reduced tool life. In extreme cases, chatter vibrations can even destroy cutting tools and damage machine tools.

[0004] A typical cutting tool comprises a steel tool body and a cutting insert made of cemented carbide.

[0005] In order to reduce the above-mentioned problems, i.e. to suppress chatter vibrations, various solutions have been proposed. WO 2017109771 A1 discloses a cutting tool holder comprising a holder body and a weight assembly, the weight assembly comprising a weight portion arranged in a weight opening. The weight portion is made of a material having a higher density than the material of the holder body.

[0006] While the cutting tool holder disclosed in WO2017109771 is claimed to improve vibration damping, the inventors have found that the cutting tool requires further improvement. Summary of the Invention

[0007] The inventors have found that the design of the above-mentioned cutting tool holder becomes more difficult to design and / or manufacture the narrower the tool width. That is, for applications such as narrow and / or deep grooving and cutting, especially when the tool width is 10 mm or less, geometric limitations are imposed, making it difficult to design and / or manufacture the tool. Furthermore, when a tool having a high density mass is used for cutting processing in which the cutting tool, such as a slot milling cutter, is rotated, there are problems such as increased power consumption. That is, it would be preferable to provide a lighter cutting tool. Furthermore, the inventors have found that the above-mentioned cutting tool is relatively expensive to manufacture because it has several parts that include high density elements. Furthermore, there is a demand for cutting tools with improved vibration damping.

[0008] It is an object of the present invention to alleviate at least one of the above problems.

[0009] This is achieved by the initially defined cutting tool, wherein the vibration damping means comprises a cantilever member, the cantilever member adjacent the recess, the cantilever member comprising a cantilever beam and an end mass, the cantilever member extending between a fixed end and a free end, the fixed end permanently connected to the tool body, the cantilever beam extending from the fixed end and the end mass extending from the free end.

[0010] To overcome the above challenges, cutting tools have been developed that use the material of the tool body itself to create the effect of a tuned mass damper. The damper can be formed by cutting material out of the original tool body. This modification of the blade shape does not require the addition of additional material or complex features.

[0011] The cutting tool is suitable for metal cutting and is preferably a cutting and grooving tool or a slot milling tool. The cutting tool preferably comprises a cutting and grooving blade or a tool body such as a slot milling cutter body. The tool body is preferably made of steel.

[0014] The insert can be removably clamped in the insert seat, the tool body being provided with clamping means, for example as one or more screws, a top clamp or elastic clamping fingers or the like.

[0015] The tool body is provided with a recess, preferably in the form of a through hole or a slot, or alternatively in the form of a cavity, the recess being spaced apart from the insert seat.

The blade portion 41 includes a first side surface 15 and a second side surface 16. A distance 17 between the first side surface 15 and the second side surface 16 is smaller than an insert width 20. The first side surface 15 and the second side surface 16 are curved or arc-shaped in a front view, as seen in FIG. 10.

[0123] 12 and 13, which show a cutting tool 1 according to a fifth embodiment. The cutting tool 1 is a slot or groove milling cutter rotatable about its rotation axis R1. The cutting tool 1 is suitable for cutting grooves in metal workpieces (not shown).

[0124] 12, the cutting tool 1 is attached to a tool adapter 25 by clamping means 26 including a screw. The tool adapter 25 comprises a coupling part 24 suitable for connection to a machine interface 27 of a machine tool (not shown), such as for example a machining centre or a multitasking machine, or a CNC machine capable of rotating a milling tool.

[0125] 13, the cantilever member 12 is positioned such that the longitudinal axis A1 of the cantilever intersects or substantially intersects the axis of rotation A1 of the slot milling cutter, and the cantilever is positioned radially or substantially radially relative to the axis of rotation R1. The cantilever member 12 is spaced apart from the axis of rotation R1.

[0126] The slot milling cutter 1, when viewed in a side view such as in Fig. 13, comprises fifteen insert seats evenly or substantially evenly distributed around the rotation axis R1. In each insert seat, exactly one cutting insert 18 is arranged. The number of vibration damping means is equal to the number of insert seats.

[0127] The slot milling cutter 1 comprises 15 cutting inserts 18 and 15 insert seats. However, the number of cutting inserts may be less or more.

[0128] Reference is now made to Figures 14 to 16 which show in more detail a first example of vibration damping means which can be seen in the lower right portion of the cutting tool in Figure 3. Figure 15 is a cross-sectional view taken along line AA in Figure 14. Figure 16 is a cross-sectional view taken along line BB in Figure 14. The vibration damping means 4 comprises a cantilever member 12.

[0129] The cantilever member 12 is adjacent to the recess 9. The recess 9 opens to a first side 15 and an opposite second side 16. The cantilever member 12 comprises a rectangular parallelepiped cantilever beam 5 and a cylindrical end mass 8. The cantilever member 12 extends between a fixed end 6 and a free end 7. The fixed end 6 is permanently connected to the tool body 2. The cantilever beam 5 extends from the fixed end 6. The end mass 8 extends from the free end 7.

[0130] A longitudinal axis A1 or central axis of the cantilever beam 5 intersects the fixed end 6 and the free end 7. The longitudinal axis A1 is parallel to the bottom surface 23 of the tool body 23. The longitudinal axis A1 is perpendicular to the front end surface 21.

[0131] The cross-sectional area of the cantilever member 12 is greater at the centre of the end mass 8 as seen in FIG. 15 than at the centre of the cantilever beam 5 as seen in FIG.

[0132] The distance from the front end face 21 to the free end 7 of the cantilever member 12 is less than the distance from the front end face 21 to the fixed end 6 of the cantilever member 12. The gap width 13, i.e., the recess width, between the cantilever member 12 and the surrounding portion of the tool body 2 made of the same material as the cantilever member 12 is constant or substantially constant. The height 35 of the cantilever beam 5 is constant and is measured perpendicular to the longitudinal axis A1 of the cantilever beam 5 as seen in FIG. 14. The length 36 of the cantilever beam 5 and the length 37 of the end mass 8 are both measured along the longitudinal axis A1 of the cantilever beam 5. The height 38 of the end mass 8 is measured perpendicular to the longitudinal axis A1 of the cantilever beam 5 as seen in FIG. 14. The length 39 of the cantilever member 12 is equal to the sum of the length 36 of the cantilever beam 5 and the length 37 of the end mass 8. The width of the cantilever member 12 is constant and is equal to the distance 17 between the first side 15 and the second side 16 .

[0133] The distance from the recess 9 to the front end face 21 is preferably 2 to 6 mm.

[0134] Reference is now made to figure 17 which shows a second example of vibration damping means 4. It differs from the first example of vibration damping means only in that a kinetic energy absorbing element 14 is arranged in a portion of the recess 9. More precisely, the recess 9 surrounding the end mass 8 is at least partially loaded with a kinetic energy absorbing element 14. The kinetic energy absorbing element 14 is silicone. The kinetic energy absorbing element extends between the first and second sides or substantially between the first and second sides.

[0135] Reference is now made to Figure 18 which shows a third example of vibration damping means 4. When compared to the first example of vibration damping means, the main differences are that the gap width 13 has been changed and that the recess 9 has a shape such that the end mass 8 forms an oval in side view.

[0136] Reference is now made to Figure 19 which shows a fourth example of vibration damping means 4. The main differences compared to the first example of vibration damping means are the change in gap width 13 and the different shape of recess 9. More specifically, the cantilever 5 has a height 35 which increases with increasing distance from the fixed end 6, and the cantilever transitions seamlessly into the end mass 8.

[0137] Now, referring to FIG. 20, a sixth embodiment of a cutting tool is shown, which includes a fifth example of vibration damping means 4 shown in detail in FIGS. 21-23. When compared to the first example of vibration damping means, the main difference is that the orientation of the cantilever member 12 is rotated by 180° in side view, as seen in FIG. 22. The distance from the front end face 21 to the free end 7 of the cantilever member 12 is longer than the distance from the front end face 21 to the fixed end 6 of the cantilever member 12. Further differences are that the length 36 of the cantilever beam 5 is shorter than the length 37 of the end mass 8, and that the gap width 13 is wider.

[0138] The longitudinal axis A1 of the cantilever 12 is parallel to the top surface 22 and the bottom surface 23 of the tool body 2. The recesses are preferably arranged so that the distance from the recess 9 to the bottom surface 23, the distance from the recess 9 to the front end surface 21, and the distance from the recess 9 to the insert seat 11 are each substantially equal, i.e. none of said distances exceeds 100%, preferably 50%, of the remaining distances. This can be seen, for example, from FIG. 21, in which the distances are substantially equal. The distance from the recess 9 to the bottom surface is preferably 2-6 mm. The distance from the recess 9 to the front end surface 21 is preferably 2-6 mm. The distance from the recess 9 to the insert seat 11 is preferably 2-6 mm.

[0139] All of the above examples of vibration damping means may include a kinetic energy absorbing element 14, which preferably comprises silicone and is disposed in at least a portion of the recess 9, with the kinetic energy absorbing element 14 filling at least a portion of the recess 9 surrounding the end mass 8.

[0140] All of the above examples of vibration damping means may include a high density material, i.e. a material denser than steel, preferably a hard metal, connected to the end mass.

[0141] Any of the vibration dampening means described above may be used in any of the cutting tools described above.

[0142] The cutting insert shown in the above embodiment may have other shapes such as substantially L-shaped or triangular in side view. The insert can be clamped by a spring clamp, i.e., by the elasticity of the gripper, insert screw, top clamp, or any other suitable clamping means.

[0143] The recesses in the cutting tool described above may be formed by any suitable metal removal process such as milling, drilling, electrical discharge machining (EDM) or laser.

[0144] Other examples of cutting tools (not shown) may include a recess as a cavity away from the first and second sides. Such cutting tools may preferably be formed in whole or in part by additive manufacturing methods.
