Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] Cross-reference to related applications This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 283,824, filed November 29, 2021, and incorporated herein by reference.
[0002] Embodiments according to the invention generally relate to long-term storage stable, single-component, bulk polymerizable polycycloolefin monomer compositions containing latent organo-ruthenium compounds and specific ultraviolet (UV) light blocking agents, which undergo rapid bulk polymerization via ring-opening metathesis polymerization when exposed to suitable photolytic conditions. Specifically, the compositions of the invention exhibit long-term storage stability for up to several months at temperatures ranging from ambient to 80° C., particularly when stored under an inert and dark atmosphere, and undergo rapid bulk polymerization only when exposed to suitable actinic radiation to form transparent optical layers for use in a variety of optoelectronic applications, including 3D printing materials, encapsulants, coatings, and fillers. More specifically, the invention relates to single-component, stable compositions including norbornene (NB)-based olefin monomers and two or more UV blocking agents, which exhibit excellent optical transparency and desirable properties for the fabrication of devices such as optical sensors, light emitting diodes (LEDs), organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), 3D printing materials, among many other devices. [Background technology]
[0003] Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are important for many applications, especially flexible displays, such as flat TVs. However, existing OLEDs, especially bottom-emitting OLEDs, have the disadvantage that only about half of the generated photons are incident on the glass substrate, and 25% of them are emitted into the atmosphere. The other half of the photons are guided and dissipated inside the OLED stack. This photon loss is mainly due to the mismatch in the refractive index (n) of the organic layers (n=1.7-1.9) and the glass substrate (n=1.5). By matching the refractive index (n=1.8) of the substrate and the organic layers and increasing the distance of the emission area to the cathode to suppress plasmonic losses, the photons incident on the substrate can be increased to 80-90%. See, for example, G.Gaertner et al.,Proc.Of SPIE,Vol.6999,69992T pp1-12(2008).
[0004] OLEDs also face other challenges: OLEDs, being made of organic materials, are typically sensitive to moisture, oxygen, temperature, and other harsh conditions. Therefore, OLEDs need to be protected from these harsh atmospheric conditions. See, for example, U.S. Patent Publication No. 2012 / 0009393.
[0005] In addition, such OLED devices are typically encapsulated with an optically transparent insulating material that has a low dielectric constant (Dk) and low loss, also called dissipation factor (Df). Typically, for most such devices, a suitable insulating material must have a dielectric constant less than 3 and low loss less than 0.001 at high frequencies, e.g., above 50 GHz. Additionally, there has been increased interest in the development of organic dielectric materials because, among other advantages, organic dielectric materials are easy to fabricate.
[0006] In order to solve the problems faced in this technical field to some extent, U.S. Patent No. 8,263,235 discloses a method using a light-emitting layer formed from at least one organic light-emitting material and an aliphatic compound having no aromatic ring, and the refractive index of the emitted light is 1.4 to 1.6. The aliphatic compound described in the patent is usually a polyalkyl ether, etc., but it is known to be unstable at high temperatures. See, for example, Rodriguez et al., I&EC Product Research and Development, Vol. 1, No. 3, 206-210 (1962).
[0007] U.S. Patent No. 9,944,818 discloses two-component bulk polymerizable compositions whose refractive index can be tailored to a desired range, suitable as fillers and protective coatings, and potentially useful in the manufacture of various OLED devices.
[0008] Thus, there remains a need for filler materials that complement the refractive index of OLEDs while exhibiting high transmittance, low dielectric constant, and good thermal properties, among other desirable properties. Additionally, it would be desirable for the organic filler materials to be readily used to form permanent protective coatings and be available as single component compositions to be dispersed in OLED layers or VAT 3D printing operations. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0009] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a composition that can overcome the problems faced in the art. More specifically, it is an object of the present invention to provide a single-component composition that can be bulk polymerized under 3D printing manufacturing conditions and / or OLED device manufacturing conditions. It is yet another object of the present invention to provide a stable single-component bulk polymerizable composition that does not exhibit a change in viscosity at or below normal storage conditions, such as conditions where the temperature reaches about 80° C., and that undergoes bulk polymerization only under process conditions, such as the use of radiation, under which the 3D object or OLED device is ultimately manufactured.
[0010] Further objects and scope of applicability of the present invention will be set forth in the detailed description below. [Means for solving the problem]
[0011] Surprisingly, it has now been found that the use of a combination of two or more UV light blocking compounds and suitable organo-ruthenium compounds as described herein as latent catalysts, in combination with one or more olefin monomers and suitable photoactivators, allows for the fabrication of 3D objects or OLED devices that include transparent optical layers with properties previously unobtainable, such as refractive index in the range of 1.4-1.8 or higher, high colorless light transmission, dielectric constant less than 2.5, desirable film thickness of the filler layer, typically in the range of 5-20 μm, but which can be adapted to shorter or longer film thicknesses depending on the intended application, compatibility with the OLED stack, particularly the cathode layer (the very thin layer at the top of the OLED stack), compatibility with polymerization of the formulation on the OLED stack, including fast polymerization times and the possibility of photolytic processing, adhesion to the OLED stack and glass cover, etc. The polymerization speed can be less than 5 seconds per layer, particularly when used in 3D printing devices. It should be noted that the compositions of the present invention are also expected to exhibit good and uniform leveling across the OLED layers, where typically low viscosities are required. In addition, the compositions of the present invention are also expected to exhibit low shrinkage due to the rigid polycycloolefin structure. Also, the components of the present invention induce fast bulk polymerization without leaving any temporary small molecules that may damage the OLED stack. Typically, no other small molecule additives need to be employed to obtain additional benefits. More importantly, the compositions of the present invention are stable (i.e., no viscosity change) when kept under ambient conditions, especially inert conditions, including up to 80° C., for hours to days, and only induce bulk polymerization upon exposure to UV light. More importantly, the compositions of the present invention exhibit excellent shelf life stability, maintaining initial viscosity for several days, at least 5-10 days, typically more than 30 days and up to several months.
[0012] Advantageously, the compositions of the present invention are also compatible with "one drop fill" (known as ODF). In the typical ODF process, which is widely used in the manufacture of top-emitting OLED devices, a specific optical fluid is applied to enhance the transmission of light from the device to the top cover glass, and the fluid is dispersed by the ODF method. Although the method is misleading by the name ODF, typically a few drops or strings of material are dispersed inside the seal line. After application of the fluid, the fluid spreads upon lamination of the top glass, similar to a die attach epoxy. The process is typically performed under vacuum to prevent air pockets. The present invention allows for low viscosity materials to coat the substrate easily and uniformly with rapid flow in a short time. Further advantageously, the present invention overcomes the deficiencies of the prior art in that a single component composition is much more convenient than employing a two-component system, especially in the ODF method. Furthermore, when used according to the process conditions described herein, the compositions of the present invention provide more transparent 3D objects with good mechanical and thermal properties. [Brief description of the drawings]
[0013] Embodiments according to the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings and / or images, which show various embodiments of the invention in a simplified manner and for illustrative purposes only. [0034] The term "derived from" means that the repeat units of a polymer are polymerized (formed) from a polycyclic norbornene-type monomer, for example according to formula (I), (III), or (IV), where the resulting polymer has been subjected to ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) to ring-open the 2,3 double bond of the norbornene-type monomer, for example as shown below: [ka]
[0035] Thus, in accordance with the practice of the present invention, there is provided a single-component composition comprising: a) one or more monomers of formula (I): [ka] (Herein, m is an integer of 0, 1 or 2. [0036] Surprisingly, it has now been found that incorporating certain additives into the composition of the present invention provides additional stability to the composition depending on the intended use or application. Specifically, it has now been found that incorporating certain ultraviolet (UV) light blocking agents provides surprising additional stability to the composition of the present invention, especially when used in UV exposure environments, such as in the vat of a 3D printer or in the encapsulation of an OLED device. More importantly, it has now been found that incorporating two or more such UV blocking compounds provides additional synergistic effects in that the composition of the present invention can be cured at a similar or faster rate when compared to a composition that does not employ such two or more UV blocking compounds. It is surprising to note that the incorporation of these two or more UV blocking agents does not reduce the bulk polymerization activity of the composition of the present invention when exposed to suitable actinic radiation, providing a synergistic beneficial effect.
[0037] Thus, the compositions of the present invention contain at least one compound of formula (V): [ka] Here, n is an integer from 0 to 4; Each R 32 is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, straight or branched (C3-C 12 )Alkyl, (C3-C 12 )Cycloalkyl, (C6-C 12 )bicycloalkyl, (C7-C 14 )tricycloalkyl, (C6-C 10 )Aryl, (C6-C 10 )aryl(C1-C3)alkyl, (C1-C 12 )Alkoxy, (C3-C 12 )Cycloalkoxy, (C6-C 12 )bicycloalkoxy, (C7-C 14 )tricycloalkoxy, (C6-C 10 )aryloxy(C1-C3)alkyl, and (C6-C10 ) aryloxy.
[0038] The compositions of the present invention also contain at least one compound of formula (VI): [ka] Here, R 33 is methyl, ethyl, straight or branched (C3-C 12 ) alkyl and (C3-C 12 ) cycloalkyl. R 34 and R 35 may be the same or different, (C1-C 10 )Alkyl, (C6-C 18 )Aryl, (C6-C 12 )aryl(C1-C5)alkyl, and (C1-C5)alkyl(C6-C 12 ) aryl. In some embodiments, R 34 and R 35 is independently selected from the group consisting of (C4-C8)alkyl, phenyl, and phenyl(C1-C3)alkyl. In some other embodiments, R 34 and R 35 is independently selected from the group consisting of (C5-C8)alkyl, and phenyl(C1-C3)alkyl. R 34 and R 35 The alkyl portion of R may be linear or branched, and in each case, all or a portion of the alkyl portion is independently selected to be branched. 34 and R 35 One or more of the methylenes of the alkyl portion of R may be replaced with -CO-, -O-, or -COO-. That is, the -CH2- portion of the alkyl is replaced with one of -CO-, -O-, or -COO-. In some embodiments, R 34and / or R 35 One or more hydrogens of the methylene moiety of is replaced with -COO-.
[0039] Surprisingly, the inclusion of the compound of formula (V) and the compound of formula (VI) can improve the stability of the composition, as well as the optical performance of the 3D article produced with the composition in the manufacture of an OLED device or in a 3D article. The compound of formula (V) or the compound of formula (VI) is believed to act as a UV blocker, among other functions, and thereby enhance the stability of the composition in contact with any UV light at the periphery during the UV exposure of the composition, for example, when the composition is drawn out of the vat to form the intended 3D object. Thus, any compound that can act similarly to the compound of formula (V) or the compound of formula (VI), such as a well-known UV blocker, can be employed in the composition of the present invention. Any amount of the compound of formula (V) or the compound of formula (VI) that provides the desired benefit can be employed in the composition of the present invention. Typically, such amount can vary from about 1:200 molar parts of the compound of formula (V) or the compound of formula (VI): the compound of formula (II). In some embodiments, such amounts are from about 1:100 molar parts of the compound of formula (V) or (VI):compound of formula (II), or about 1:50 molar parts, etc. However, it should be noted that it is not necessary to use equal amounts of the compounds of formula (V) and formula (VI), and varying amounts of the compound of formula (V) can be used in combination with an appropriate amount of the compound of formula (VI), typically in the amounts described above.
[0040] Representative examples of compounds of formula (V) are listed below, without being limited thereto: [ka]
[0041] Representative examples of compounds of formula (VI) are listed below, without being limited thereto: [ka]
[0042] Examples of various other UV light blocking compounds and / or UV light absorbing agents that can be used in the compositions of the present invention include the following: [ka] where n and R 32 is as defined herein.
[0043] Representative compounds falling within the scope of compounds of formula (Va) and (Vb) may be depicted as follows: [ka]
[0044] As noted, the compositions of the present invention are in the form of a clear liquid at room temperature and remain a clear solution for a period of about 3-6 months at temperatures of about 25° C. to about 80° C. Typically, it has now been observed that the viscosity of the composition also remains essentially constant over a period of about 3-6 months. In some embodiments, the change in viscosity after storage for a period of about 3-6 months is an increase of about 10-20 percent. The stability of the compositions is also increased by storage under an inert, dark atmosphere, as described in more detail below.
[0045] As used herein, Aryl may further include: [ka]
[0046] Here, R in each formula x is methyl, ethyl, straight or branched (C3-C 12 ) alkyl, or (C6-C 10 ) aryl.
[0047] As stated, the monomer of formula (I) has a refractive index of at least 1.5. The composition is in the form of a transparent liquid at room temperature. Surprisingly, as described above, the composition of the present invention is stable at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 80°C, thus providing excellent shelf life stability. As used herein, "stable" means that the composition of the present invention remains transparent without any increase in viscosity when kept at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 80°C, particularly when kept in a dark atmosphere, such as an amber or brown container without light. Thus, in some embodiments, the composition of the present invention exhibits no viscosity change when stored at temperatures below 80°C for a period of more than 30 days. Thus, in some embodiments, the composition of the present invention exhibits less than a 5 percent viscosity increase when stored at temperatures below 80°C for a period of more than 40 days. In some other embodiments, the composition of the present invention exhibits less than a 10 percent viscosity change when stored at temperatures below 80°C for a period of 60 to 90 days. In some other embodiments, the composition of the present invention exhibits less than a 20 percent viscosity change when stored at temperatures below 80°C for a period of 120 to 180 days. In some other embodiments, the compositions of the present invention exhibit less than 2 percent viscosity change when stored at ambient temperature, e.g., about 20° C.-25° C., for extended periods of time, which may range from about 120 days to 300 days or more. That is, the viscosity of the composition remains essentially unchanged when stored at ambient temperature conditions, but the composition undergoes bulk polymerization upon exposure to suitable actinic radiation, as evidenced by UV-DSC measurements, as disclosed above, which showed that the heat of polymerization remained unchanged even after the composition was stored for extended periods of time.
[0048] The monomers employed in the compositions of the present invention are per se known in the literature or may be prepared by any method known in the art to produce such monomers or similar types of monomers.
[0049] Also, the monomers described herein, i.e., in pure form without any solvent, readily undergo bulk polymerization when polymerized under bulk ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) conditions using certain transition metal catalysts, such as organo-ruthenium and organo-osmium compounds. See, e.g., RH Grubbs et al., Handbook of Metathesis, Ed.: Wiley-VCH, Weinheim, Germany, 2003; RH Grubbs et al., Acc. Chem. Res. 2001, 34, 18-29; RH Grubbs et al., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 2006, 45, 3760-3765. See also U.S. Patent No. 6,838,489, which is incorporated herein. The term "bulk polymerization" as used herein has the meaning normally accepted in the art, i.e., a polymerization reaction that is typically carried out substantially without a solvent. However, in some cases, a low percentage of solvent is present in the reaction medium. For example, such a small amount of solvent may be used to dissolve or carry the latent catalyst and / or activator in the reaction medium. Some solvents may also be used to reduce the viscosity of the monomer. The amount of solvent that may be used in the reaction medium may range from 0 to 5 weight percent based on the total weight of the monomer employed. Any suitable solvent that dissolves the catalyst, activator, and / or monomer may be employed in the present invention. Such solvents include alkanes, cycloalkanes, toluene, THF, dichloromethane, dichloroethane, and the like.
[0050] Advantageously, it has now been found that one or more monomers themselves can be used to dissolve the activator as well as the latent catalyst, avoiding the need to use a solvent. Also, one monomer can function by itself as a solvent for the other monomer, eliminating the need for an additional solvent. For example, if the first monomer of formula (I) is solid at room temperature, the second monomer of formula (I) that is liquid at room temperature can be used as a solvent for the first monomer of formula (I) that is solid, and vice versa. Thus, in such a situation, multiple monomers can be employed in the composition of the present invention.
[0051] Thus, it has now been surprisingly discovered that the monomers of formula (I) function as high refractive index materials that impart a high refractive index to the resulting polymer film upon bulk polymerization at temperatures and / or conditions different from the application of the composition onto a desired substrate. Typically, the monomers of formula (I) suitable for the present invention are characterized by a refractive index of at least 1.5. In some embodiments, the refractive index of the monomers of formula (I) is greater than 1.5. In some other embodiments, the refractive index of the monomers of formula (I) is in the range of about 1.5 to 1.6. In still some other embodiments, the refractive index of the monomers of formula (I) is greater than 1.55, greater than 1.6, or greater than 1.65. In some other embodiments, it may be greater than 1.7.
[0052] Typically, the compositions of the present invention exhibit low viscosity at room temperature, and may be less than 100 centipoise. In some embodiments, the viscosity of the compositions of the present invention at room temperature is less than 80 centipoise. In some other embodiments, the viscosity of the compositions of the present invention at room temperature is in the range of about 10 to 100 centipoise. In yet some other embodiments, the viscosity of the compositions of the present invention at room temperature is less than 70 cP, less than 60 cP, less than 40 cP, or less than 20 cP at room temperature. In some other embodiments, the viscosity may be less than 10 cP at room temperature, and may vary as low as 4 cP to 9 cP.
[0053] When the compositions of the present invention include two or more monomers, the monomers may be present in any desired amount that provides the intended benefit, including, for example, refractive index modification, viscosity modification, or both. Thus, the molar ratio of the first monomer of formula (I) to the second monomer of formula (II) may range from 1:99 to 99:1. In some embodiments, the molar ratio of the first monomer of formula (I) to the second monomer of formula (I) ranges from 5:95 to 95:5, and in some other embodiments, is 10:90 to 90:10, 20:80 to 80:20, 30:70 to 70:30, 60:40 to 40:60, 50:50, etc. Similarly, when more than two different monomers of formula (I) are employed, any ratio of such monomers that provides the intended result may be used.
[0054] Typically, the compositions according to the invention include one or more monomers of formula (I) above, and, as described below, when additional monomers of formula (I) separate from one another are required, the compositions of the various embodiments are selected to give such embodiments the properties appropriate and desired for the application of such embodiments, such that such embodiments can be adapted to various specific applications. For example, as already described above, appropriate combinations of characteristic monomers of formula (I) allow tailoring of compositions with desired refractive index, viscosity, and optical transparency. Also, as further described herein, it may be desirable to include other polymeric or monomeric materials, such as inorganic nanoparticles, adapted to provide desired optical properties depending on the end application. Thus, the compositions of the present invention may also include other highly refractive polymeric materials and / or nanoparticles that provide such intended benefits. Such polymers include, but are not limited to, poly(α-methylstyrene), poly(vinyl-toluene), copolymers of α-methylstyrene and vinyl-toluene, and the like. Examples of such nanoparticles include, but are not limited to, organic or inorganic nanoparticles in the size range of 1-100 nm, including materials such as crosslinked poly(styrene), crosslinked poly(methacrylate), metal oxides (e.g., zinc oxide, magnesium oxide, titanium oxide), silicone, silicone oxide, silicone nitride, and fluorescent materials (e.g., III-V semiconductor nanoparticles such as indium phosphide).
[0055] It has further been found that advantageously, the composition of the present invention also comprises additional monomers. In some embodiments, the composition according to the present invention may further comprise one or more monomers selected from the monomers of formula (III).
[0056] The monomer of formula (III) is [ka] Here, o is an integer from 0 to 2; D is SiR 21 R 22 R 23 ,or -(CH2) c -O-SiR 21 R 22 R 23 (E); -(CH2) c -SiR21 R 22 R 23 (F); and -(SiR 21 R 22 ) c -O-SiR 21 R 22 R 23 (G) wherein: c is an integer from 1 to 10, and one or more CH2 are optionally selected from (C1-C 10 ) alkyl, (C1-C 10 ) perfluoroalkyl, or (C6-C 14 ) substituted with aryl; R 18 , R 19 , and R 20 are the same or different and are independently selected from hydrogen, halogen, and hydrocarbyl, where hydrocarbyl is methyl, ethyl, straight or branched (C 12 )Alkyl, (C3-C 12 )Cycloalkyl, (C6-C 12 )bicycloalkyl, (C7-C 14 )tricycloalkyl, (C6-C 10 )Aryl, (C6-C 10 )aryl(C1-C3)alkyl, (C1-C 12 )Alkoxy, (C3-C 12 )Cycloalkoxy, (C6-C 12 )bicycloalkoxy, (C7-C 14 )tricycloalkoxy, (C6-C 10 )aryloxy(C1-C3)alkyl, or (C6-C 10 ) aryloxy; R 21 , R 22 , R 23 are each independently methyl, ethyl, straight or branched (C3-C9) alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted (C6-C 14 )aryl, methoxyethoxy, linear or branched (C3-C9)alkoxy, or substituted or unsubstituted (C6-C 14) aryloxy.
[0057] In this aspect of the invention, it has now been found that monomers of formula (III) offer further advantages: they may increase or decrease the refractive index of the composition, or increase or decrease the dielectric constant, depending on the nature of the monomer, so that they can be tailored to the needs. They also usually improve adhesion, so that they can be used as "adhesion modifiers". Finally, they may exhibit, among other advantages, low viscosity and good solubility for latent catalysts and / or activators.
[0058] In some embodiments, the compositions of the invention contain a first monomer and a second monomer of formula (I) separate from one another, where one of the first monomer and the second monomer has a refractive index of at least 1.5 and a viscosity of less than 100 centipoise, and the first monomer is completely miscible with the second monomer to form a clear solution. However, as noted, any one or more monomers of formula (III) may be used in this embodiment of the invention.
[0059] In some embodiments, the compositions of the present invention may contain one or more monomers of formula (IV). [ka] Here, R 24 and R 25 are the same or different and are each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, straight or branched (C3-C6) alkyl, methoxy, ethoxy, straight or branched (C3-C6) alkyloxy, acetoxy, (C2-C6) acyl, phenyl, and phenoxy; or R 24 is R 25 and together with the carbon atom to which they are attached form a (C5-C7) carbocyclic ring, optionally containing one or more double bonds. R 26 is hydrogen, halogen, methyl, ethyl, straight or branched (C3-C 16 )Alkyl, (C6-C 10 )Aryl, (C6-C 10 )aryl(C1-C6)alkyl, hydroxy, methoxy, ethoxy, linear or branched (C3-C 16 )Alkoxy, (C6-C 10 )aryloxy, (C6-C 10 )aryl(C1-C6)alkoxy, -O(CO)R 27 , or -O(CO)OR 27 where R 27 is methyl, ethyl, straight or branched (C3-C 16 )Alkyl, (C6-C 10 ) aryl, or (C6-C 10 )aryl(C1-C6)alkyl.
[0060] Thus, any monomer within the scope of the monomer of formula (I) may be employed in the compositions of the present invention. Representative examples of monomers of formula (I) include, but are not limited to, the following: [ka] [ka] [ka] [ka] [ka]
[0061] Similarly, any monomer within the scope of the monomer of formula (III) may be employed in the compositions of the present invention. Representative examples of monomers of formula (III) include, but are not limited to, the following: [ka] [ka]
[0062] Representative examples of monomers of formula (IV) include, but are not limited to, the following: [ka] [ka]
[0063] As noted, the compositions of the present invention include at least one organo-ruthenium compound of formula (II) that, when the composition is exposed to suitable actinic radiation, results in bulk polymerization as described herein under ROMP conditions. Typically, such organo-ruthenium compounds of formula (II) are "latent" and only become active under certain conditions. Also, as used herein, "latent" means that the organo-ruthenium catalyst used in the compositions of the present invention remains inactive for extended periods of time when the compositions of the present invention are stored at temperatures up to 80° C. under atmospheric conditions. Thus, in some embodiments, the organo-ruthenium catalyst remains latent for periods of more than 30 days when stored at temperatures below 80° C. In some other embodiments, the organo-ruthenium catalyst remains latent for periods of 40 to 90 days when stored at temperatures below 50° C.
[0064] Generally, any latent organo-ruthenium compound of formula (II) that results in ring-opening metathesis polymerization of monomers of formula (I) or formula (III) or formula (IV) may be employed in the compositions of the present invention. Interestingly, it has now been found that organo-ruthenium compounds of formula (II) are very stable at temperatures from about 25° C. (i.e., atmospheric conditions) to about 80° C., and may be stored as such or in the presence of one or more monomers of formula (I) or (III) or (IV) for several days, including 3 to 6 months or more. That is, the organo-ruthenium compounds of formula (II) function as latent catalysts that can be easily activated only when required by a variety of conditions, including, but not limited to, heat, acid, light, and chemical activation, even though they are stable from or near room temperature to elevated temperatures up to 80° C. Chemical activation may include the use of thermal or photoacid generators.
[0065] Some of the latent catalysts known in the literature are not stable under the conditions specified herein, and most of them do not exhibit the required shelf life stability as described herein. For example, Grubbs, et al., Organometallics, 2011, 30(24): 6713-6717, Sutar et al., Angew. al.,J.Mater.Chem.C.2015,3,693-702, Grubbs,et al.,J.Am.Chem.Soc.,2009,131,203802039,Zak,et al.,Eur.J.Inorg.Chem.,2014,1131-1136,Gawin,et al.,ACS See Catal.2017,7,5443-5449. Further examples of such catalysts can be found in U.S. Patent No. 9,328,132, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Thus, compositions incorporating organo-ruthenium compounds of formula (II), as described herein, provide previously unattainable advantages in a variety of applications.
[0066] Thus, in some embodiments, the compositions of the present invention contain an organo-ruthenium compound of formula (II), wherein: Z is oxygen; R7 is hydrogen; R8, R9, R 10 , and R 11 are the same or different and each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, and -NO2; R 12 , R 13 , and R 14 are the same or different and each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, and -NO2; R 15 is selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, and cyclohexyl; Ar1 and Ar2 are the same or different and are each independently selected from the group consisting of phenyl, 2,6-dimethylphenyl, 2,6-diethylphenyl, 2,6-di(isopropyl)phenyl, and 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl.
[0067] Thus, a few exemplary latent catalysts falling within the scope of the organo-ruthenium compounds of formula (II) may be selected from the group consisting of, but not limited to: [ka] [ka]
[0068] Interestingly, it has now been found that the organo-ruthenium compounds of formula (II), when exposed to suitable photolysis conditions, can be activated by certain known photoactive compounds, thereby promoting the bulk polymerization of one or more monomers of formula (I) or formula (III) or formula (IV) contained in the compositions of the present invention under ROMP conditions as described herein. Accordingly, it has now been found that certain known photoactive compounds can be used for this purpose, such as, for example, a class of substituted xanthone derivatives, which are illustrated by the following structural formula (VII): [ka] Here, Y is a halogen; R 30 and R 31 are the same or different and each independently represent hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, straight or branched (C3-C 12 )Alkyl, (C3-C 12 )Cycloalkyl, (C6-C 12 )bicycloalkyl, (C7-C 14 )tricycloalkyl, (C6-C 10 )Aryl, (C6-C 10 )aryl(C1-C3)alkyl, (C1-C 12 )Alkoxy, (C3-C 12 )Cycloalkoxy, (C6-C 12 )bicycloalkoxy, (C7-C 14 )tricycloalkoxy, (C6-C 10 )aryloxy(C1-C3)alkyl, and (C6-C 10 ) aryloxy.
[0069] In some embodiments, the compound of formula (VII) is: Y is chlorine or bromine; R 30 and R 31are the same or different and each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, phenyl, cyclohexyl, methoxy, ethoxy, n-propoxy, and phenoxy.
[0070] Representative examples of compounds of formula (VII) are listed below, without being limited thereto: [ka] [ka] [ka]
[0071] As noted, it has now surprisingly been discovered that by employing a suitable combination of a compound of formula (II) in combination with one or more compounds of formula (VII), bulk polymerization of the monomers is triggered when the composition is exposed to suitable actinic radiation, typically at wavelengths between about 240 nm and 410 nm, the composition undergoes bulk ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) to form a transparent film or object.
[0072] Any amount of the organo-ruthenium compound of formula (II) that produces the intended results may be employed in the compositions of the present invention. Typically, the combined molar ratio of the monomers of formula (I), formula (III), and formula (IV) to the compound of formula (II) ranges from 10,000:1 to 5,000:1 or less. In some other embodiments, such molar ratio of the monomers to the compound of formula (II) is 15,000:1, 20,000:1 or more.
[0073] Any amount of the compound of formula (VII) that produces the intended result can be employed in the composition of the present invention. Typically, the amount of the compound of formula (VII) employed can range from 0.5 parts per 100 parts of monomer employed (phr) to about 3 parts or more per 100 parts of monomer employed. In some other embodiments, the amount of such compound of formula (VII) is 1 phr per 100 phr of monomer, 1.5 phr per 100 phr of monomer, 2 phr per 100 phr of monomer, 2.5 phr per 100 phr of monomer. In some other embodiments, the amount of the compound of formula (VII) employed can be less than 0.5 phr per 100 phr or more than 3 phr per 100 phr, depending on the intended cure speed of the composition of the present invention.
[0074] In some embodiments, compositions according to the present invention, when exposed to suitable UV radiation, undergo bulk polymerization to form a substantially transparent film. The monomers undergo bulk polymerization to form a film that is substantially transparent to visible light, i.e., most visible light is transmitted through the film. In some embodiments, such films formed from compositions of the present invention exhibit greater than 90 percent transmission of visible light. In some other embodiments, such films formed from compositions of the present invention exhibit greater than 95 percent transmission of visible light.
[0075] It is further noted that the compositions of the present invention, when exposed to suitable actinic radiation, undergo bulk polymerization at a rate similar to that of compositions that do not contain either of the two UV blocking agents. Similarly, the compositions of the present invention exhibit similar polymerization rates when compared to compositions that contain only one of the UV blocking agents. Thus, there is no discernible decrease in the activity of the polymerization rate of the compositions of the present invention when exposed to suitable actinic radiation. Furthermore, films formed from the compositions of the present invention exhibit substantially the same transmittance, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, indicating that the compositions of the present invention exhibit greater than 90% transmittance at wavelengths between 370 nm and 800 nm. This aspect is further described in the embodiments of the operation described below.
[0076] Thus, in some embodiments, the compositions of the present invention can undergo bulk polymerization to form a solid object, such as a transparent film, in less than 5 seconds after exposure to suitable actinic radiation. In some other embodiments, the compositions of the present invention can undergo bulk polymerization to form a solid object, such as a transparent film, in less than 10 seconds after exposure to suitable actinic radiation. In yet some other embodiments, the compositions of the present invention can undergo bulk polymerization to form a solid object, such as a transparent film, in 1-10 seconds, 2-9 seconds, 3-8 seconds, 4-7 seconds, etc. after exposure to suitable actinic radiation.
[0077] In yet another embodiment, the compositions of the present invention, when exposed to suitable UV radiation at temperatures between 80° C. and 100° C., undergo bulk polymerization to form a substantially transparent film or object.
[0078] In some embodiments, the compound of formula (VII) can be activated by a specific wavelength of electromagnetic radiation, which can typically range from about 240 nm to 400 nm. Thus, any compound that is active to such electromagnetic radiation can be employed in the compositions of the present invention that are stable in 3D manufacturing methods. In some embodiments, the wavelength of radiation that activates the compound of formula (VII) is 260 nm. In some other embodiments, the wavelength of radiation that activates the compound of formula (VII) is 310 nm. In yet some other embodiments, the wavelength of radiation that activates the compound of formula (VII) is 395 nm.
[0079] However, any other known photoactive compound capable of activating the latent organo-ruthenium compounds of formula (II) employed herein may be used in the compositions of the present invention, and all such compounds are part of the present invention.
[0080] Advantageously, it has now further been discovered that the employment of one or more monomeric crosslinkers in suitable amounts can dramatically improve the mechanical properties of the resulting three-dimensional objects formed from the compositions of the present invention. Exemplary such suitable monomeric crosslinkers can be selected from the group consisting of: [ka] Where: m is an integer of 0, 1 or 2; b is an integer from 1 to 10; K is selected from the group consisting of CH2, CH2-CH2, O, and S; X is O, S, or NR a , SiR b R c , SiR b R c O(SiR b R c O) n SiR b R c , SiR b R c (C6-C 10 )ArylSiR b R c a bond or moiety selected from the group consisting of: -C(O)-, -C(O)O-, -OC(O)-, -OC(O)-O-, -SC(O)-, -C(O)-S-, -CH=CH-, and -C≡C-; R a , R b , and R c are each independently hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, or a straight or branched chain (C 12 ) alkyl, (C3-C8) cycloalkyl, (C5-C 12 )bicycloalkyl, (C5-C 12 )bicycloalkenyl, and (C5-C 12 )bicycloalkenyl(C1-C3)alkylSi(CH3)2; O, NR a and / or the S atoms are not directly linked to each other, n is an integer from 0 to 10.
[0081] It has now been found that the incorporation of one or more compounds of formula (VIIIa), formula (VIIIb) or formula (VIIIc) can advantageously allow the properties of the composition to be adapted to the intended purpose. For example, the suitable combination of one or more compounds of formula (VIIIa), formula (VIIIb) or formula (VIIIc) with the composition of the present invention can improve, among other properties, the mechanical properties of the article formed from the composition of the present invention. In particular, it has now been found that the incorporation of certain siloxane compounds within the scope of the compound of formula (VIIIa) or formula (VIIIb) improves the impact strength of the product formed therefrom. Any amount of one or more compounds of formula (VIIIa), formula (VIIIb) or formula (VIIIc) that provides the intended benefit can be employed. Typically, such amounts, if employed, may range from 0 to 20 mole percent of one or more compounds of Formula (VIIIa), (VIIIb), or (VIIIc) based on the total moles of monomer of Formula (I), combining one or more monomers of Formula (III) or Formula (IV) and one or more compounds of Formula (VIIIa), (VIIIb), or (VIIIc). In some embodiments, such amounts may range from 1 to 15 mole percent, in some other embodiments, such amounts may range from 0.5 to 10 mole percent, and in still other embodiments, such amounts may range from 0.5 to 5 mole percent.
[0082] Thus, in some embodiments, the impact strength of the polymer formed from the composition of the present invention is at least 40 J / m. In some other embodiments, the impact strength of the polymer formed from the composition of the present invention is at least 60 J / m. In still some other embodiments, the impact strength of the polymer formed from the composition of the present invention may be at least 80 J / m, 100 J / m or more, 140 J / m or more, or even greater than 160 J / m, such as, for example, greater than 170 J / m, greater than 180 J / m, greater than 200, 220, or 240 J / m, or even greater than 500, 550, 600, 700, or 800 J / m depending on the type of monomer employed as described herein. In some embodiments, the polymer formed from the composition of the present invention including one or more monomers of formula (I) itself may exhibit extraordinary impact strengths that may range from 50 to 800 J / m.
[0083] In some embodiments, the compound of Formula (VIIIa), Formula (VIIIb), or Formula (VIIIc), respectively, has m=0 and K=CH2. In some embodiments, the compound of Formula (VIIIa), Formula (VIIIb), or Formula (VIIIc), respectively, has m=1 and K=CH2. In yet some other embodiments, the compound of Formula (VIIIa), Formula (VIIIb), or Formula (VIIIc), respectively, has m=2 and K=CH2.
[0084] Representative examples of compounds within the scope of formula (VIIIa) or formula (VIIIb) include, but are not limited to, the following: [ka] [ka]
[0085] Additionally, various other oligomeric or polymeric polysiloxanes having polyfunctional cycloolefin pendant groups, whether or not falling within the scope of the compounds of formula (VIIIa), are suitable as crosslinking molecules in the compositions of the present invention. Such examples include oligomeric siloxanes of the formula: [ka] where b is an integer from 1 to 9; n is an integer from 1 to 10; R b and R c is independently selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, and phenyl.

[0087] Various other non-limiting examples within the scope of compounds of formula (VIIIa), formula (VIIIb), and formula (VIIIc) can be listed below. [ka] [ka]
[0088] In some embodiments of the present invention, the composition of the present invention may additionally contain other photosensitizer compounds capable of activating the organo-ruthenium compound of formula (II) to promote the bulk polymerization of the monomer of formula (I) and, if present, the monomer of formula (III) or formula (IV). For this purpose, any suitable sensitizer compound may be employed in the composition of the present invention. Such suitable sensitizer compounds include photosensitizers such as anthracene, phenanthrene, chrysene, benzpyrene, fluoranthene, rubrene, pyrene, xanthone, indanthrene, and mixtures thereof. [0096] In a further aspect of the present invention, a kit is provided that forms a substantially transparent film. The composition of the present invention is dispersed in the kit. Thus, in some embodiments, a kit is provided in which one or more monomers of formula (I), organo-ruthenium compounds of formula (II), and compounds of formula (V), compounds of formula (VI), and compounds of formula (VII), and optionally one or more monomers of formula (III), and / or one or more monomers of formula (VII) and various other additives as described herein are dispersed.
[0097] Thus, in some embodiments of the invention, a kit according to the invention comprises one or more monomers of formula (I), an organo-ruthenium compound of formula (II), a compound of formula (V), a compound of formula (VI), and a compound of formula (VII).
[0098] In yet some other embodiments, kits according to the invention contain one or more monomers of Formula (I), an organo-ruthenium compound of Formula (II), a compound of Formula (V), a compound of Formula (VI), a compound of Formula (VII), and one or more additives described herein.
[0099] In some embodiments, the kit includes two or more monomers of formula (I) that are separate from one another, as described herein. In some other embodiments, the kit of the present invention includes at least two monomers, a first monomer that promotes dissolution of the second monomer and / or the organo-ruthenium compound of formula (II), and additives as described herein. Any monomer of formula (I) described herein may be used in this embodiment. The molar ratio of the first monomer to the second monomer of formula (I) included in these components may vary and may range from 1:99 to 99:1, 10:90 to 90:10, 20:80 to 80:20, 30:70 to 70:30, 60:40 to 40:60, 50:50, etc. In some other embodiments, the kit may include a composition in which more than two monomers of formula (I) that are separate from one another are dispersed. Additionally, as noted above, the first monomer of formula (I) is completely soluble in the second monomer of formula (I) and forms a clear solution at room temperature, hi some embodiments, the monomer mixture may be a clear solution at slightly elevated temperatures, e.g., 30°C, 40°C, or 50°C.
[0100] In another aspect of this embodiment of the invention, the compositions of the invention, when exposed to suitable radiation for a sufficient time, undergo bulk polymerization to form a polymeric film or solid object. In other words, the compositions of the invention are poured onto the surface or substrate to be encapsulated and exposed to suitable radiation to cause polymerization of the monomers to form a solid, transparent polymer, which may be in the form of a transparent film or solid object. Typically, as discussed above, such polymerization may occur upon exposure to actinic radiation at wavelengths ranging from about 240 nm to 410 nm. The compositions may also be simultaneously exposed to suitable radiation and heat to cause bulk polymerization. By practicing the invention, it is possible to obtain polymeric films on such substrates that are substantially transparent films, or solid objects, depending on the manufacturing method employed. By "substantially transparent film" herein is meant that the films formed from the compositions of the invention are optically transparent to visible light. Thus, in some embodiments of the invention, the films have a visible light transmittance of at least 90 percent, and in some other embodiments, the films formed from the compositions of the invention have a visible light transmittance of at least 95 percent.
[0101] In some embodiments, the kits described herein include a composition comprising any one of the specifically recited mixtures above.
[0102] In accordance with yet another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method for forming a substantially transparent film for the manufacture of various optoelectronic devices, comprising the steps of: forming a homogeneous, transparent composition comprising one or more monomers of formula (I), an organo-ruthenium compound of formula (II), a compound of formula (V), a compound of formula (VI), a compound of formula (VII), and optionally one or more monomers of formula (III) or formula (IV) and one or more additives as described herein; coating or pouring the composition onto a suitable substrate to form a film; exposing the film to suitable radiation or heating the film to a suitable temperature to cause polymerization of the monomer.
[0103] Coating the desired substrate with the composition of the present invention to form a film can be performed by any coating or printing procedure described herein and / or known to those skilled in the art, such as spin coating. Other suitable coating methods include, but are not limited to, spraying, doctor blading, meniscus coating, inkjet coating, and slot coating. The composition can also be inkjet printed onto the substrate, as known in the art. The mixture can also be poured onto the substrate to form a film. Suitable substrates include any suitable substrate that is or may be used for electrical, electronic, or optoelectronic devices, such as semiconductor substrates, ceramic substrates, glass substrates.
[0104] The coated substrate is then exposed to suitable actinic radiation, i.e., radiation having a wavelength in the range of 240 nm to 410 nm as described herein, to promote bulk polymerization. In some embodiments, the substrate is exposed to radiation and baked at a temperature of about 40° C. to about 90° C. for about 2 minutes to about 10 minutes. In some other embodiments, the substrate is exposed to radiation and baked at a temperature of about 60° C. to about 90° C. for about 5 minutes to about 20 minutes.
[0105] The films thus formed may be evaluated for optical properties by any method known in the art. For example, the refractive index of the film in the visible spectrum may be measured by ellipsometry. The optical quality of the film may be measured by visual observation. Quantitative percent transmittance may be measured by visible spectroscopy. Typically, films formed according to the present invention exhibit excellent optical transmission and may be matched to the desired refractive index as described herein.
[0106] Thus, in some embodiments of the present invention, there is provided an optically transparent film obtained by bulk polymerization of the compositions described herein. In another embodiment, there is provided an optoelectronic device comprising the inventive transparent film described herein. The thickness of the transparent film can range anywhere between 0.5 μm and 100 μm, preferably between 1 mm and 50 μm.
[0107] As mentioned, the composition of the present invention can be used in any known three-dimensional (3D) printing technique and other printing techniques. Some of the 3D printing procedures known in the art include continuous liquid interface production (CLIP), layer-by-layer (LBL), inkjet printing, and front-on polymerization techniques such as front-on ring-opening metathesis (FROMP) techniques. For example, see Robertson et al., Nature, Vol. 557, 223-227 (2018).
[0108] In the CLIP method, 3D objects are continuously formed by projecting a series of successive UV images (generated by a digital light processing (DLP) imaging unit or a laser to generate the part) through an oxygen / UV-transparent window below a liquid resin vat containing the composition of the invention. A dead zone is generated above the window to maintain a liquid interface below the advancing part. Above the dead zone, the part to be cured is continuously withdrawn from the resin vat. The suction force generated by this withdrawal simultaneously refills the resin vat. In this way, various parts of distinct dimensions up to several centimeters can be produced with a part resolution of less than 100 microns.
[0109] In 3D inkjet printing technology, the composition of the present invention can be used as a photopolymerizable ink composition to form lines and vias on a substrate, typically a silicon wafer. Thus, a variety of components useful in electronic and optoelectronic applications can be manufactured using the composition of the present invention. Non-limiting such applications include the manufacture of OLED devices on various substrates, which can be produced in high yields in a substantially particle-free environment. The composition of the present invention can act as an organic encapsulant layer and / or filler material in some of such OLED devices.
[0110] Accordingly, in yet another aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of forming a three-dimensional object comprising the steps of: providing a homogeneous and transparent composition comprising one or more monomers of formula (I), at least one organo-ruthenium compound of formula (II), a compound of formula (V), a compound of formula (VI), a compound of formula (VII), and optionally one or more monomers of formula (III) and / or one or more monomers of formula (IV) in combination with one or more additives as described herein, in a suitable container blanketed with an inert atmosphere; exposing the composition to suitable UV radiation while withdrawing it from the container; forming a three-dimensional object.
[0111] Surprisingly, it has been found that by placing the composition in a suitable container blanketed with an inert atmosphere, it is possible to form a 3D object that does not have any voids and exhibits excellent optical, thermal and mechanical properties.Such an inert blanket atmosphere can be achieved by using any inert gas that produces this effect.Non-limiting such inert gases include nitrogen, helium, argon, etc.In some embodiments, the inert atmosphere used is by way of purging with dry nitrogen.
[0112] Thus, the 3D objects formed by the methods of the present invention exhibit excellent optical, thermal, and mechanical properties. Typically, the properties of the objects can be tailored to the intended end use. For example, the thermal properties of the 3D objects can be tailored to be stable up to 180°C or higher depending on the type of monomer of formula (I) combined with the monomer of formula (III) or formula (IV), if employed, to form such 3D objects. Similarly, the mechanical properties can be tailored to the desired mechanical properties by simply selecting the suitable monomers described herein. Typically, parts that retain very good impact strength can be produced by proper selection of the monomers. Most importantly, the compositions of the present invention are stable to 3D printing conditions and can withstand temperatures of up to 80°C for several days, ranging from about 5 to 10 days, without any degradation and / or premature polymerization, thus providing long shelf life stability, among other benefits. In some embodiments, the compositions of the present invention are stable at 80°C for at least 6 days. In some other embodiments, the compositions of the present invention are stable at 50°C for at least 10 days. In yet some other embodiments, the compositions of the present invention are stable at 80° C. for at least 8 days.
[0113] Thus, in some embodiments of the present invention, there are also provided three-dimensional objects comprising the compositions of the present invention that exhibit excellent optical, thermal, and mechanical properties.
[0114] The composition of the present invention is also useful as a protective layer in various electronic or optoelectronic devices, particularly organic electronic devices, that are sensitive to environmental conditions, particularly oxygen and moisture. The composition of the present invention functions as such a protective layer to provide much needed protection against environmental conditions.Typically, in such applications, such as organic light emitting diode (OLED) devices, the OLED or multiple layers of the OLED stack are formed on a suitable substrate and then encapsulated by the composition of the present invention.
[0115] The OLED stack encapsulation can be performed by any known method, including but not limited to, dip coating, inkjet coating, spin coating, and the like. The coated OLED stack is then exposed to suitable actinic radiation to form a transparent polymer layer on the OLED stack via ROMP. Before or after the formation of the transparent polymer layer, a conductive layer is deposited on the polymer layer. Such a conductive layer can be deposited by any known method, such as, for example, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), among others. The polymer layer formed from the composition of the present invention is stable to such CVD methods and maintains its transparency, among other properties, as described herein. Finally, the OLED device can be protected, if necessary, by coating with the composition of the present invention described above and forming another polymer layer by exposure to suitable actinic radiation. Such a stack process can require multiple processes of forming a transparent polymer layer and / or depositing a conductive layer.

The detailed preparations fall within the scope of the more general described methods above and serve to illustrate them. The examples are for illustrative purposes only and are not intended to limit the scope of the present invention. In the examples and throughout this specification, the monomer to catalyst ratio is based on a mole to mole basis. EXAMPLES
[0117] The following abbreviations have been used herein to describe some of the compounds, devices, and / or methods employed to describe certain embodiments of the present invention.
[0118] HexylTD: 2-Hexyl-1,2,3,4,4a,5,8,8a-octahydro-1,4:5,8-dimethanonaphthalene Ru-1: [1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-2-imidazolidinylidene]{2-[(E)-({2-[methylthio-κS]phenyl}imino-κN)methyl]phenoxide-κO}[2-(oxide-κO)benzylidene-κC]ruthenium(II) CPTX: 1-chloro-4-propoxy-9H-thioxanthen-9-one BTBBT: 2,5-bis(5-(tert-butyl)benzo[d]oxazol-2-yl)thiophene Tinuvin 970 available from Bodo Moller Chemie phr: parts per 100 parts of monomer
[0119] The various monomers utilized in the present invention are either commercially available or can be readily prepared by the procedures described in co-pending US Pat. No. 9,944,818.
[0120] The following examples demonstrate that the compositions of the present invention maintain substantial stability at room temperature or at 60° C. for several days, and upon exposure to UV light as follows, undergo bulk polymerization very readily to form desired objects as specified below.
[0121] Examples 1 to 3
[0122] Preparation of Compositions (Working Examples 1 to 3, Comparative Example 1, Reference Examples 1 to 3) In a brown glass bottle, CPTX (1.5 phr) was dissolved in HexylTD (10,000 molar parts) by sonication at 30° C. for 20 minutes to form a clear solution. The solution was purged with nitrogen for 8 hours. Ru-1 catalyst (1 molar part) was added to the purged solution in the glove box and sonicated for 30 minutes to completely dissolve the catalyst. Samples were optically checked for complete dissolution and filtered prior to further experiments. For compositions containing optional (c) and / or (d) compounds, the relative amount of HexylTD was reduced and the concentrations of CPTX and Ru-1 were kept constant. The compositions prepared are listed in Table 1. For example, the composition of Working Example 3 has 0.5% and 2% by weight of BTBBT and Tinuvin® 970, respectively, compared to the total weight of the composition of Working Example 3 (100% by weight).
[0123] Preparation of thin films (spin coating + UV curing) Thin films of the compositions listed in Table 1 were prepared by spin coating onto pre-cleaned quartz substrates in a glove box under nitrogen. The wet films were irradiated with 395 nm UV light to cure the films, the dose applied being typically 1-5 J / cm. 2 The exact amounts used are summarized in Table 1. The spin-coating parameters were optimized to obtain a cured film thickness of 8 μm. The film thickness was determined by profilometry after curing using a stylus profilometer as the height difference between the film surface and the substrate surface (after scratching with a scalpel).
[0124] Transmission spectrum Transmission spectra were recorded of the cured thin films on quartz slides. Spectra were collected from 250 to 800 nm and referenced to a blank quartz slide. Table 1 summarizes the optical properties of the films. The UV curing dose is given in Table 1 as: λ = 395 nm [J / cm 2 ] value. As can be seen from the data, films made with compositions doped with either (c) or (d) compounds show no substantial change in transmittance in the visible range, i.e., all films show greater than 98% transmittance in the 450-800 nm visible spectrum, as evidenced by Figure 1.
[0125] Films made from compositions containing the (c) and (d) compounds have reduced transmittance in the UV light range. This indicates that thin films of these materials can already be used to protect underlying layers from UV light. Film curing can be achieved with 395 nm light, although some of the (c) and / or (d) compounds show substantial absorption around this wavelength. The transmittance spectrum plots of Comparative Example 1 and Working Example 3 are shown in FIG. 1.
[0126] Cure rate measurement The cured material was collected by scraping the prepared film off the substrate and analyzed by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The spectrum was baseline corrected and had a peak at 2851 cm -1 Normalized to the peak at 3058 cm -1 The cure rate was determined by integrating the monomer specific oscillations at and comparing with the integral of the signal of the uncured formulation.
[0127] As can be seen from the results, the combination of (c) compound and (d) compound reduces the transmittance in the range of 250 to 400 nm, but the curing rate remains high (Working Examples 1 to 3). Since the presence of HexylTD in the film can be reduced, it is preferable that the curing rate of the obtained film is high.
[0128] [Table 1]
[0129] Although the present invention has been described with reference to the above examples, the present invention is not limited to the examples, but generally encompasses the general scope set forth hereinabove. Various modifications and embodiments may be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.
