Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates to a battery module, a battery pack and a vehicle including such a battery module, and a method for manufacturing such a battery module.
[0002] This application claims priority to Korean Patent Application No. 10-2021-0074431 filed on June 8, 2021, and Korean Patent Application No. 10-2021-0074432 filed on June 8, 2021, and the entire contents disclosed in the specification and drawings of said application are incorporated herein by reference. [Background technology]
[0003] Secondary batteries, which have high applicability to various products and electrical properties such as high energy density, are widely used not only in portable devices but also in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) that are driven by electric drive sources. These secondary batteries have the primary advantage of dramatically reducing the use of fossil fuels, as well as the advantage of not producing any by-products associated with energy use, and are therefore attracting attention as a new energy source that is environmentally friendly and improves energy efficiency.
[0004] Currently, types of secondary batteries that are widely used include lithium ion batteries, lithium polymer batteries, nickel cadmium batteries, nickel metal hydride batteries, and nickel zinc batteries. The operating voltage of such a unit secondary battery cell, i.e., a unit battery cell, is about 2.5V to 4.5V. Therefore, when a higher output voltage is required, a battery pack may be configured by connecting a plurality of battery cells in series. Also, a battery pack may be configured by connecting a plurality of battery cells in parallel depending on the charge / discharge capacity required for the battery pack. Therefore, the number of battery cells included in the battery pack may be variously set depending on the required output voltage or charge / discharge capacity.
[0005] In addition, when configuring a battery pack by connecting a plurality of battery cells in series / parallel, a common method is to first configure a battery module including at least one battery cell, and then use this at least one battery module to add other components to configure the battery pack.
[0006] A conventional battery module generally includes a battery cell assembly including a plurality of battery cells, a base housing supporting a bottom of the battery cell assembly, a side housing coupled to a base plate and supporting both sides of the battery cell assembly, and a cover housing coupled to the side housing and covering an upper portion of the battery cell assembly. Here, the battery cell assembly includes a plurality of cooling fins accommodating at least two battery cells for cooling the plurality of battery cells. Conventionally, the plurality of cooling fins are U-shaped and are arranged in contact with and accommodate at least two battery cells therein.
[0007] However, in the case of a battery module, when accommodating at least two such battery cells inside a cooling fin, a worker must first spread both ends of the cooling fin to accommodate the battery cells, and then accommodate the battery cells inside the cooling fin.
[0008] As a result, in the case of a conventional battery module, the work process for accommodating the battery cells inside the cooling fins takes a considerable amount of time, resulting in a problem of reduced efficiency in the assembly process.
[0009] Furthermore, in the case of a conventional battery module, a plurality of housing members are required to accommodate the battery cell assemblies, and an additional process is required for the bonding process between these housing members. In addition, the size of the entire battery module increases due to the plurality of housing members, resulting in a problem of a decrease in the energy density of the entire battery module.
[0010] For this reason, it is desirable to find a solution for providing a battery module that can achieve a slimmer and more compact structure while improving the efficiency of the assembly process, a battery pack and an automobile including such a battery module, and a method for manufacturing such a battery module. [0032] The present invention will become more clear by describing in detail preferred embodiments of the present invention with reference to the attached drawings. The embodiments described herein are illustrative in order to aid in the understanding of the invention, and it should be understood that the present invention can be implemented in various forms different from the embodiments described herein. In addition, in order to aid in the understanding of the invention, the attached drawings may be drawn not to scale, and the dimensions of some components may be exaggerated.
[0033] FIG. 1 is a diagram for explaining a battery module according to one embodiment of the present invention, FIG. 2 is a diagram for explaining a battery cell assembly of the battery module of FIG. 1, and FIG. 3 is a diagram for explaining a cooling fin unit of the battery cell assembly of FIG. 2.
[0034] 1 to 3, a battery module 10 may include a battery cell assembly 100 and a housing sheet 200.
[0035] The battery cell assembly 100 may include a plurality of battery cells 110 .
[0036] The battery cells 110 may be stacked so as to be electrically connected to each other. The battery cells 110 may be a pouch-type secondary battery, a cylindrical secondary battery, or a prismatic secondary battery, which may be a secondary battery. Hereinafter, the present embodiment will be described only in the case where the battery cells 110 are a pouch-type secondary battery.
[0037] The battery cell assembly 100 may include a plurality of cooling fin units 150.
[0038] The plurality of cooling fin units 150 are installed in a housing sheet 200 (to be described later) and can accommodate two of the plurality of battery cells 110 .
[0039] Each of the plurality of cooling fin units 150 may include a first cooling fin 160 , a second cooling fin 170 , and a thermal interface material 180 .
[0040] The first cooling fin 160 is for cooling the battery cell 110 and guiding support of the battery cell 110, and may support one of the two battery cells 110. The first cooling fin 160 may be made of an aluminum material.
[0041] The first cooling fin 160 may include a first fin body 162 and a first fin base 166 .
[0042] The first fin body 162 may be formed to have a predetermined length and may support a side surface of one of the battery cells 110. The first fin body 162 may be in surface contact with a side surface of the one of the battery cells 110 to enhance cooling efficiency.
[0043] The first fin base 166 may be bent from the first fin body 162 and disposed at a bottom of one of the battery cells 110. The first fin base 166 may be disposed at a predetermined distance from a second fin base 176, which will be described later. The first fin base 166 may at least partially support a bottom of the one of the battery cells 110.
[0044] The second cooling fin 170, which cools the battery cell 110 and guides the support of the battery cell 110, is spaced apart from the first cooling fin 160 and may support the other battery cell 110 of the two battery cells 110. The second cooling fin 170 may be made of an aluminum material.
[0045] The second cooling fin 170 may include a second fin body 172 and a second fin base 176 .
[0046] The second fin body 172 may be formed to have a predetermined length and may support a side surface of the other battery cell 110. The second fin body 172 may be in surface contact with a side surface of the other battery cell 110 to enhance cooling efficiency.
[0047] The second fin base 176 may be bent from the second fin body 172 and disposed on a bottom of the other battery cell 110. The second fin base 176 may at least partially support the bottom of the other battery cell 110.
[0048] The thermal interface material 180 may connect the second cooling fin 170 and the first cooling fin 160 and be provided at the bottom of the two battery cells 110. Specifically, the thermal interface material 180 may connect the first fin base 166 and the second fin base 176 and be provided on the upper sides of the first fin base 166 and the second fin base 176.
[0049] Such a thermal interface material 180 may be comprised of a thermally conductive adhesive. Additionally, the thermal interface material 180 may be comprised of a potting resin.
[0050] The housing sheet 200 may house the battery cell assembly 100 .
[0051] Specifically, the housing sheet 200 may receive the battery cell assembly 100 and integrally enclose a bottom of the battery cell assembly 100 , both sides of the battery cell assembly 100 , and an upper part of the battery cell assembly 100 .
[0052] More specifically, the housing sheet 200 may enclose one side of the battery cell assembly 100, a bottom of the battery cell assembly 100, the other side of the battery cell assembly 100, and an upper side of the battery cell assembly 100, and may be disposed to at least partially overlap one side of the battery cell assembly 100. With such an overlapping arrangement, one end and the other end of the housing sheet 200 may be disposed to overlap one side of the battery cell assembly.
[0053] The housing sheet 200 may be an insulating sheet having a predetermined length. Specifically, the housing sheet 200 may be an insulating sheet including a high tensile and high adhesive material. For example, the housing sheet 200 may be a general tape type, plastic, or an insulating coated metal sheet.
[0054] Since the housing sheet 200 is prepared as a single member and integrally encloses the battery cell assembly 100, the number of components for configuring the module housing can be reduced compared to the conventional art, and the entire battery module 10 can be slimmed down.
[0055] Therefore, in the present embodiment, the housing sheet 200 can reduce the manufacturing cost of the battery module 10 and significantly increase the energy density of the battery module 10.
[0056] Hereinafter, the assembly process of the battery module 10 according to the present embodiment will be described in more detail.
[0057] 4 to 7 are diagrams for explaining the assembly process of the battery module of FIG.
[0058] Hereinafter, a method for manufacturing a battery module according to the present embodiment will be described with reference to FIGS.
[0059] The method for manufacturing the battery module according to the present embodiment may include the following steps in sequence.
[0060] First, the manufacturing method of the battery module may include a step of placing a predetermined length of the housing sheet 200 on a conveyor belt C that guides transportation in a predetermined direction.
[0061] The manufacturing method of the battery module may include a step of mounting a plurality of cooling fin units 150, each consisting of a pair of first and second cooling fins 160 and 170, for supporting both sides of the battery cells 110 on the housing sheet 200 of the predetermined length.
[0062] In addition, the manufacturing method of the battery module may include a step of inserting a thermal interface material 180 between the first cooling fin 160 and the second cooling fin 170 to connect the first cooling fin 160 and the second cooling fin 170.
[0063] The method for manufacturing the battery module may also include a step of passing the housing sheet 200 over a ridge roller R that forms a curved surface portion of a predetermined height.
[0064] The method for manufacturing the battery module may include a step of inserting at least one battery cell 110 between the first cooling fin 160 and the second cooling fin 170 when the housing sheet 200 passes over the upper side of the ridge roller R and the distance between the first cooling fin 160 and the second cooling fin 170 is increased due to the passage of the housing sheet 200 over the ridge roller R.
[0065] In addition, the manufacturing method of the battery module may include a step of wrapping the housing sheet 200 so that the at least one battery cell 110 and the plurality of cooling fin units 150 are covered when the housing sheet 200 passes through the raised portion roller R.
[0066] Here, in the case of this embodiment, the space between the first cooling fin 160 and the second cooling fin 170 naturally widens and then narrows as the raised portion roller R of the housing sheet 200 passes, which may make it significantly easier to insert the battery cell 110 into the cooling fin unit 150.
[0067] In addition, in this embodiment, when the insertion of the battery cell 110 is completed, the housing sheet 200 may sequentially wrap the at least one battery cell 110 and the plurality of cooling fin units 150 along at least one direction to package the battery cell assembly 100.
[0068] In this manner, in this embodiment, the raised portion roller R makes it easier and simpler to insert the battery cells 110 into the cooling fin unit 150, thereby significantly improving the efficiency of the assembly process of the battery module 10.
[0069] In addition, in this embodiment, the housing sheet 200 that encases the battery cell assembly 100 can simplify the configuration of the module housing of the battery module 10, thereby making it possible to slim down the entire battery module 10 and significantly increasing the energy density of the battery module 10.
[0070] Meanwhile, after being covered with the housing sheet 200, the battery module may be subjected to a post-process for manufacturing the battery module.
[0071] FIG. 8 is a diagram illustrating a battery pack according to an embodiment of the present invention.
[0072] Referring to FIG. 8, a battery pack 1 may include at least one battery module 10 according to the above-described embodiment, and a pack case 50 packaging the at least one battery module 10.
[0073] The battery pack 1 may further include an adhesive member 70.
[0074] The adhesive member 70 is provided to more stably guide the battery module 10 and is arranged between the at least one battery module 10 and the pack case 50, thereby fixing the at least one battery module 10 to the pack case 50.
[0075] In the battery pack 1 according to the present embodiment, the battery modules 10 are fixed between the pack cases 50 by the adhesive members 70, so that no separate fastening structure or bolt members are required for fastening.
[0076] Therefore, according to this embodiment, the storage structure of the battery module 10, the appearance of which is formed by the housing sheet 200 (see FIG. 1), can be realized more compactly, and a battery pack 1 that is slimmer and has high energy efficiency can be provided.

[0081] The battery cell assembly 300 may include a plurality of cooling fin units 350.
[0082] The plurality of cooling fin units 350 are for cooling and supporting the battery cells 310, and are installed within the housing sheet 400, and can integrally support two battery cells 310 among the plurality of battery cells 310.
[0083] Each of such cooling fin units 350 may include integral cooling fins 360 and thermal interface material 380 .
[0084] The integrated cooling fin 360 may be made of an aluminum material and may integrally support the two battery cells 110. The integrated cooling fin 360 may include a fin base 362 and a fin body 365.
[0085] The fin base 362 may support bottom portions of the two battery cells 310. To this end, the fin base 362 may have an area capable of supporting the bottom portions of the two battery cells 310.
[0086] The fin body 365 may be provided on the fin base 362 and disposed between the two battery cells 310. The fin body 365 may be in surface contact with each of the two battery cells 310 to enhance cooling efficiency.
[0087] The thermal interface material 380 may be provided on a bottom of the integrated cooling fins 360. Specifically, the thermal interface material 380 may be provided on a fin base 362 of the integrated cooling fins 360.
[0088] The housing sheet 400 may house the battery cell assembly 300 as in the above-described embodiment, and may integrally enclose the bottom of the battery cell assembly 300, both sides of the battery cell assembly 300, and the top of the battery cell assembly 300.
[0089] Hereinafter, the assembly process of the battery module 20 according to the present embodiment will be described in more detail.
[0090] 12 to 15 are diagrams for explaining the assembly process of the battery module of FIG.
[0091] 12 to 15, the manufacturing method of the battery module according to the present embodiment may include a step of placing a predetermined length of the housing sheet 400 on a conveyor belt C that guides the transportation in a predetermined direction.
[0092] The manufacturing method of the battery module may also include a step of mounting a plurality of integrated cooling fins 360, including a fin base 362 supporting the bottoms of the two battery cells 310, and a fin body 365 provided on the fin base 362 and between the two battery cells 310, on the housing sheet 400 of the predetermined length.
[0093] The method for manufacturing the battery module may also include the step of applying a thermal interface material 380 onto the fin base 362.
[0094] In addition, the method of manufacturing the battery module may include a step of passing the housing sheet 400 over a ridge roller R that forms a curved surface portion of a predetermined height.
[0095] In addition, the manufacturing method of the battery module may include a step of mounting the two battery cells 310 to the fin base 362 by sandwiching the fin body 365 when each fin body 365 is tilted by the passage of the ridge roller R of the housing sheet 400.
[0096] In addition, the manufacturing method of the battery module may include a step of wrapping the housing sheet 400 so that the housing sheet 400 covers the plurality of battery cells 310 and the plurality of integrated cooling fins 360 when the housing sheet 400 passes through the ridge roller R.
[0097] Here, in the case of this embodiment, each fin body 365 is naturally tilted at a predetermined angle (θ) as the ridge roller R of the housing sheet 400 passes, so that the attachment of the battery cell 310 to the integrated cooling fin 360 may be significantly facilitated.
[0098] In addition, in this embodiment, when the insertion of the battery cell 310 is completed, the housing sheet 400 may sequentially enclose the at least one battery cell 310 and the plurality of cooling fin units 350 along at least one direction to package the battery cell assembly 300.
[0099] In this manner, in the present embodiment, the raised portion roller R makes it easier and simpler to install the battery cells 310 in the cooling fin unit 350, thereby significantly improving the efficiency of the assembly process of the battery module 20.
[0100] The above-mentioned steps for manufacturing the battery module according to the present embodiment may be performed sequentially. Meanwhile, the battery module may also be subjected to a post-process for manufacturing the battery module after being covered with the housing sheet 400.
