Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present disclosure relates to crampons and methods of making crampons. [Background technology]

[0002] Crampons are devices that are configured to attach to a user's shoe or boot and provide improved traction, especially on icy or snowy terrain. Typically, crampons include a base for attachment under a user's footwear and a means, such as a strap, for attaching the base to the user's footwear. The underside of the base is provided with cleats for improved traction and grip with the ground.

[0003] Crampons come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from climbing crampons designed to withstand the rigors of traveling on snow and ice when navigating mountains, to simpler devices designed to improve traction and mobility in more urban environments. Given the competing desires for crampons that are effective in providing the wearer with improved traction and grip, while at the same time being comfortable to the wearer, there remains a need in the art for improved crampons that strike a balance between these benefits. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0023] The present disclosure seeks to provide improved crampons and methods of making such crampons. Various embodiments of the present disclosure are described below, but the disclosure is not limited to these embodiments, and variations of these embodiments may fall well within the scope of the present disclosure, which should be limited only by the appended claims.

[0024] The words "a" or "an" when used in conjunction with the terms "comprising" or "including" in the claims and / or specification may mean "one," but are also consistent with the meanings of "one or more," "at least one," and "one or more," unless the content clearly dictates otherwise. Similarly, the word "another" may mean a second or more, unless the content clearly dictates otherwise.

[0025] The terms "coupled," "couple," or "connected" as used herein can have several different meanings depending on the context in which the terms are used. For example, the terms coupled, couple, or connected can have mechanical or electrical connotations. For example, the terms coupled, couple, or connected as used herein can indicate that two elements or devices are directly connected to each other, or are connected to each other via one or more intermediate elements or devices through electrical elements, electrical signals, or mechanical elements, depending on the particular context.

[0026] The terms "front," "rear," "top," "bottom," "left," and "right" should be interpreted as a user of the crampons would interpret such terms when the crampons are attached to footwear worn by the user.

[0027] According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, a crampon 100 is shown in Figure 1. The crampon 100 generally includes a lower portion, which may be referred to as a crampon base 10, connected to an upper portion, which may be referred to as a harness 30. A number of cleats 50 (not fully shown in Figure 1) are partially embedded within and extend away from the crampon base 10, as described in more detail below. As is known in the art, the cleats 50 provide improved traction to a user of the crampon 100, allowing the user to more easily move over uneven or slippery surfaces, such as snow or ice.

[0028] Collectively, the crampon base 10 and the harness 30 define a space or volume into which a user can insert footwear, such as a shoe or boot. The crampon 100 can then be secured or tightened around the footwear by a fastening device 70 extending between the left side 72 and the right side 74 of the harness 30. In this embodiment, the fastening device 70 is a Velcro® strap, but in other embodiments, any other suitable fastening device can be used. For example, the Velcro® strap can be replaced with a hook or similar configuration on each of the left side 72 and the right side 74 of the harness 30. The hooks can be engaged with each other by bringing the left side 72 and the right side 74 of the harness 30 closer together to tighten the harness 30 around the footwear introduced within the crampon 100.

[0029] 2 and 3, there is shown a flexible front crampon base portion 12 and a flexible rear crampon base portion 14 of the crampon base 10. The front crampon base portion 12 includes a central portion 16 and a number of front base straps 18 extending therefrom. In particular, the front crampon base portion 12 includes two front base straps 18a extending from the front of the central portion 16, a front base strap 18b extending from each of the left and right sides of the central portion 16, and two front base straps 18c extending from the rear of the central portion 16. Similarly, the rear crampon base portion 14 includes a central portion 20 and a number of rear base straps 22 extending therefrom. In particular, rear crampon base portion 14 includes a rear base strap 22a extending from each corner of the front of central portion 20, and a rear base strap 22b extending from each corner of the rear of central portion 20. In other embodiments, front crampon base portion 12 and rear crampon base portion 14 may include any suitable number of front base straps 18 and rear base straps 22. In still other embodiments, front crampon base portion 12 and rear crampon base portion 14 may be integrally formed such that crampon base 10 is made from one unitary piece.

[0030] As seen in FIG. 2, the front base strap 18b includes a thickened section 19 that has a sloped trapezoidal shape. The thickened section 19 results in the thickness of the front base strap 18b increasing from the central section 16 toward the ends of the front base strap 18b. The thickened section 19 includes recesses 13 formed therein to reduce the weight of the front base strap 18b and to improve the ability of the front base strap 18b to flex. The thickened section 19 also relieves tension between the user's feet and the points at which the front base strap 18b is attached to the harness 30 by spacing the attachment points away from the user's feet.

[0031] An opening or eyelet 24 is disposed at the end of each front base strap 18 and each rear base strap 22. A gripping mechanism 11, such as a small stud, extends upwardly from each of the central portions 16 and 20. The gripping mechanism 11 increases friction between the crampon base 10 and footwear received within the crampon 100, thereby improving grip between the footwear and the crampon base 10. The front base straps 18a are also interconnected by a connecting strap 26 integrally formed with the front base straps 18a such that a toe box opening 28 is defined for receiving a front or toe portion of footwear received within the crampon 100.

[0032] 4A and 4B, top and bottom views of the harness 30 are shown in greater detail. The harness 30 includes a generally oval-shaped structure with several openings or eyelets 32 formed along its periphery. The number of eyelets 32 in the harness 30 corresponds to the number of eyelets 24 on the crampon base 10. The front periphery of the harness 30 includes recessed edges between successive eyelets 32. On the left side 72 and right side 74 of the harness 30, the harness 30 includes slots 34 for receiving the Velcro® straps of the fastening device 70. The harness 30 further includes several configurations for reducing the overall weight of the harness 30 while at the same time improving the flexibility of the harness 30. In particular, the harness 30 includes several recessed areas 39 on the top surface of the harness 30 (FIG. 4A). On the underside of the harness 30 (FIG. 4B), the harness 30 includes a honeycomb structure of dimples formed therein and an opening 37 formed in the rear of the harness 30, which also reduce the overall weight of the harness 30 while improving the flexibility of the harness 30. Increasing the flexibility of the harness 30 helps the user stretch the harness 30 as they insert their feet into the crampons 100.

[0033] Referring to FIG. 5A, a top and bottom side of a cleat 50 for use with a crampon 100 is shown, according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. The cleat 50 includes a generally cross-shaped cleat base 52 including a central hub 53, a first member 52a, and a second member 52b disposed perpendicular to the first member 52a. In contrast to a conventional rectangular cleat base, the cross shape of the cleat base 52 provides improved stability to the user. Each member 52a, 52b includes a straight portion 54 radiating outward from the central hub 53. Additionally, the second member 52b includes a curved portion 55 extending from the straight portion 54. At the end of each curved portion 55, a spike 56 projects downward from the second member 52b. In particular, the curvature of each second member 52b, by virtue of the curved portion 55, causes each spike 56 to project downward at an angle relative to the line L defined by the first member 52a. Each spike 56 includes a downwardly projecting portion and a pointed end 57. The cleat base 52 further includes a number of openings 58 formed therein.

[0034] 5B illustrates an alternative or additional cleat 60 that may be used with crampon 100. Unlike cleat 50, cleat 60 has three prongs or spikes 61 extending from a cleat base 62. Like cleat base 52, cleat base 62 includes a central hub 63 and three spokes or members radiating from central hub 63. Cleat base 62 also includes a number of openings 64 formed therein.

[0035] In some embodiments, the distance separating spikes 56 of cleat 50 is approximately 2 cm. Also, because cleat 50 has only two spikes 56 instead of three or more spikes, cleat 50 is less susceptible to snowballing (which can be a common problem with crampons), or in other words, the risk of snow or ice getting stuck to cleat base 52, than cleat 60.

[0036] According to one embodiment of the disclosure, Figures 6A-6D show steps taken in a molding process to manufacture the front crampon base portion 12 of the crampon base 10. Although the front crampon base portion 12 of Figures 6A-6D is not exactly the same shape as the front crampon base portion 12 of Figure 2, the steps shown in Figures 6A-6D may be equally applied to the front crampon base portion 12 of Figure 2. In Figure 6A, the cleats 50 are placed in a mold (not shown) at a predetermined position and a predetermined orientation relative to one another with the spikes 56 pointing down. In Figure 6B, an elastomeric pad 65 is provided on the cleats 50 such that the pad 65 covers the top of the cleat bases 52 of each of the cleats 50. The pad 65 helps stabilize the cleats 50 against the mold and, in the case of the front crampon base portion 12, includes a vertical strip 66 bisected by two horizontal strips 67. The cleats 50 are placed under the ends of the strips 66 and 67. The pad 65 comprises a thermoplastic polyurethane, although the disclosure extends to other suitable types of materials.

[0037] In FIG. 6C, elastomer 68 is injected into the mold to form the remainder of the front crampon base portion 12, including the front base strap 18. Due to the shape of the mold, the cleat base 52 of each cleat 50 is embedded within the front crampon base portion 12. Specifically, the cleat base 52 of each cleat 50 is sandwiched between the pad 65 and the injected elastomer 68. Thus, as seen in FIG. 6D, only the spikes 56 protrude from the underside of the front crampon base portion 12. The openings 58 formed in each cleat base 52 are filled with the injected elastomer 68, and thus each cleat 50 is more firmly embedded within the front crampon base portion 12 than if the cleat base 52 did not include the openings 58. This process is repeated for the rear crampon base portion 14. The shape of the upper elastomer pad used for the rear crampon base portion 14 can be seen in FIG. The elastomer 68 also includes a thermoplastic polyurethane. However, because the pad 65 supports the cleat 50 during use of the crampon 100, the pad 65 is formed of a harder thermoplastic polyurethane than the elastomer 68.

[0038] 7A and 7B, the underside of the front and rear crampon base portions 12, 14 are shown. The pointed ends 57 of the spikes 56 are visible protruding from the front and rear crampon base portions 12, 14. At the location of each cleat 50, a recess 69 is visible in the mold of elastomer 68. The recesses 69 help allow the front and rear crampon base portions 12, 14 to flex during use.

[0039] Returning to FIG. 1 , the crampon 100 is formed by connecting the front crampon base portion 12 and the rear crampon base portion 14 to the harness 30 at multiple attachment points. In particular, the eyelets 24 of each front base strap 18 and each rear base strap 22 are aligned with corresponding eyelets 32 of the harness 30. Once aligned, a fastening device, such as a rivet 75, is inserted into the eyelets 24, 32, thereby securing the harness 30 to the crampon base 10. While other forms of fastening devices can be used, the rivet 75 may be advantageous in that the rivet 75 may provide a more durable connection than a conventional link. Additionally, the rivet 75 may be constructed to have a relatively low profile to reduce friction with a user's foot during use of the crampon 100.

[0040] 1, front base strap 18c of front crampon base portion 12 overlaps rear base strap 22a of rear crampon base portion 14. This overlap can help pull crampon 100 onto a user's foot by pulling front crampon base portion 12 rearward and front crampon base portion 14 forward, helping to secure crampon 100 in place.

[0041] In some embodiments, the crampon base 10 is stiffer and more durable than the harness 30, but the harness 30 is more flexible, thereby making it easier for a user to place their feet within the crampon 100. In some embodiments, the harness 30 is made from a thermoplastic elastomer, while the crampon base 10 is made from a thermoplastic polyurethane.

[0042] Although the present disclosure has been described in connection with specific embodiments, it should be understood that the present disclosure is not limited to these embodiments, and that changes, modifications, and variations of these embodiments may be made without departing from the scope of the present disclosure. Furthermore, it is contemplated that any portion of any aspect or embodiment discussed herein can be implemented or combined with any portion of any other aspect or embodiment discussed herein.
