Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates to an aerosol generating system comprising an aerosol-generating film. In particular, the present invention relates to a handheld aerosol generating system configured to evaporate the aerosol-generating film by heating to generate an aerosol that is inhaled by a user. The present invention also relates to an aerosol-generating article comprising an aerosol-generating film. In particular, the present invention relates to an aerosol-generating article comprising an aerosol-generating film for use in a handheld aerosol generating system configured to evaporate the aerosol-generating film by heating to generate an aerosol that is inhaled by a user. [Background technology]
[0002] Aerosol-generating articles are known in the art in which an aerosol-generating substrate, such as a nicotine- or tobacco-containing substrate, is heated rather than burned. Typically, in such heated aerosol-generating articles, an aerosol is generated by transferring heat from a heat source to a physically separated aerosol-generating substrate or material, which may be located in contact with, within, around, or downstream of the heat source. During use of the aerosol-generating article, volatile compounds are released from the aerosol-generating substrate by heat transfer from the heat source and are entrained in the air drawn through the aerosol-generating article. As the released compounds cool, they condense to form an aerosol. Substrates for heated aerosol-generating articles usually include an "aerosol former," which is a compound or mixture of compounds that facilitates the formation of an aerosol during use. Examples of aerosol formers include polyhydric alcohols, such as propylene glycol and glycerin.
[0003] Known heated aerosol-generating articles include, for example, aerosol-generating articles that are electrically heated to generate an aerosol, and aerosol-generating articles in which the aerosol is generated by the transfer of heat from a combustible fuel element or heat source to a physically separate aerosol-forming material.
[0004] Known handheld electrically operated aerosol generating systems include, for example, electrically operated aerosol generating systems comprising an aerosol generating article including an aerosol-generating substrate, and an aerosol generating device including a battery, control circuitry, and an electric heater for heating the aerosol-generating substrate of the aerosol-generating article to generate an aerosol. In some embodiments, the electric heater of the aerosol generating device is inserted into or around the aerosol-generating substrate when the aerosol-generating article is inserted into the aerosol generating device.
[0005] Hand-held, electrically operated aerosol generating systems are also known which include electric heaters arranged to sequentially heat different portions of the aerosol-generating substrate to provide separate puffs.
[0006] For example, US 5,060,671 discloses an article for electrically heating a flavor generating medium to develop inhalable flavorants or other components in the form of a vapor or aerosol. The article has a plurality of charges of flavor generating medium which are heated in sequence to provide individual puffs. The article comprises electrical heating means for individually heating each of the plurality of charges, a source of electrical energy for powering the electrical heating means, and control means for applying electrical energy to the electrical heating means to individually heat one of the plurality of charges. When heated, each of the charges delivers a quantity of flavorant-containing material to the consumer.
[0007] Known aerosol generating systems can suffer from inconsistent aerosol generation per puff, which can be due to variations in the amount of aerosol-generating substrate heated to generate aerosol from one puff to the next, or variations in the composition of the aerosol-generating substrate heated to generate aerosol from one puff to the next.
[0008] It would be desirable to provide an aerosol generation system that results in a more consistent delivery of the aerosol.
[0009] In particular, it would be desirable to provide an aerosol generation system that results in a controlled, consistent, and predetermined amount of aerosol delivered to a user per puff. Summary of the Invention
[0010] The present invention relates to an aerosol generating system. The aerosol generating system may comprise an aerosol-generating film. The aerosol-generating film may comprise a cellulosic film former, a non-cellulosic thickener, and a polyhydric alcohol. The aerosol generating system may comprise a heater assembly for heating the aerosol-generating film to generate an inhalable aerosol. The aerosol generating system may comprise a power source. The aerosol generating system may comprise a control circuit. The control circuit may be configured to control the supply of power from the power source to the heating assembly in response to a user inhalation. The control circuit may be configured to activate the heater assembly to sequentially heat different portions of the aerosol-generating film in response to successive user inhalations.
[0011] According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided an aerosol generation system comprising: an aerosol-generating film comprising a cellulosic film-forming agent, a non-cellulosic thickening agent, and a polyhydric alcohol; a heater assembly for heating the aerosol-generating film to generate an inhalable aerosol; a power source; and control circuitry configured to control the supply of power from the power source to the heating assembly in response to a user's inhalation, wherein the control circuitry is configured to activate the heater assembly to sequentially heat different portions of the aerosol-generating film in response to successive user inhalations.
[0012] The present invention also relates to an aerosol-generating article. The aerosol-generating article may comprise a substrate. The aerosol-generating article may comprise a plurality of spaced apart, separate portions of an aerosol-generating film disposed on the substrate. Each spaced apart, separate portion of the aerosol-generating film may comprise a cellulosic film-forming agent, a non-cellulosic thickener, and a polyhydric alcohol.
[0013] According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided an aerosol-generating article comprising a support and a plurality of spaced apart, distinct portions of an aerosol-generating film disposed on the support, each spaced apart, distinct portion of the aerosol-generating film comprising a cellulosic film-forming agent, a non-cellulosic thickener, and a polyhydric alcohol.
[0014] As explained further below, an aerosol generating system according to the first aspect of the invention may comprise an aerosol generating article according to the second aspect of the invention.
[0015] As used herein in connection with the present invention, the term "film" is used to describe a solid, layered element having a thickness that is less than its width or length.
[0016] As used herein in connection with the present invention, the term "aerosol-generating film" is used to describe a film that is capable of releasing a volatile compound when heated to generate an aerosol.
[0017] An aerosol generating system according to the present invention comprises an aerosol generating film that includes a combination of a cellulosic film former, a non-cellulosic thickener, and a polyhydric alcohol.
[0018] It has been observed that the inclusion of high levels of polyhydric alcohols, and especially high levels of glycerin, in a liquid film-forming composition can adversely affect the physical stability of a film produced, for example, by casting or extruding the liquid film-forming composition and then drying.
[0019] The inventors have surprisingly found that the inclusion of a cellulosic film former in combination with a non-cellulosic thickener allows for the formation of aerosol-generating films containing high levels of polyhydric alcohols, and particularly high levels of glycerin, and provides improved physical stability.
[0020] In particular, the inventors have surprisingly found that the inclusion of a cellulosic film former in combination with a non-cellulosic thickener allows for the formation of aerosol-generating films containing high levels of polyhydric alcohols, and particularly high levels of glycerin, which substantially maintain their shape and composition over extended periods of time when exposed to ambient or storage conditions.
[0021] The inclusion of a cellulosic film former in combination with a non-cellulosic thickener allows for the formation of aerosol-generating films of predetermined shapes, sizes, and compositions with high precision and reproducibility, including high levels of polyhydric alcohols, and especially high levels of glycerin.
[0022] In use, an aerosol-generating film comprising a cellulosic film former, a non-cellulosic thickener, and a polyhydric alcohol can be heated by the heater assembly of the aerosol-generating system of the present invention to generate an inhalable aerosol comprising the polyhydric alcohol and, if present in the aerosol-generating film, an alkaloid compound such as nicotine, or a cannabinoid compound such as cannabidiol (CBD) or tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), without substantially releasing the liquid phase from the aerosol-generating film.
[0023] In use, the heater assembly of the aerosol generating system of the present invention can heat an aerosol-generating film comprising a cellulosic film former, a non-cellulosic thickener, and a polyhydric alcohol to generate an inhalable aerosol, thereby evaporating substantially all of the components of the aerosol-generating film, particularly by heating the aerosol-generating film to a temperature of about 180 degrees Celsius to about 250 degrees Celsius to generate an inhalable aerosol, thereby evaporating substantially all of the components of the aerosol-generating film, except for a small amount of the cellulosic film former.
[0024] The aerosol-generating system according to the first aspect of the invention, and the aerosol-generating article according to the second aspect of the invention, advantageously allow the aerosol delivery per puff to be precisely and reliably controlled by adjusting the dimensions and composition of the aerosol-generating film.
[0025] The inclusion of an aerosol-generating film comprising a cellulosic film former, a non-cellulosic thickener, and a polyhydric alcohol in the aerosol-generating system and aerosol-generating article according to the first aspect of the present invention enables the aerosol-generating film to generate and deliver a consistent aerosol to a user over successive user inhalations or puffs.
[0026] The aerosol-generating film may be self-supporting. The mechanical and adhesive properties of a self-supporting aerosol-generating film are such that the formed aerosol-generating film can be separated from the support, even if the aerosol-generating film is obtained, for example, by casting a liquid film-forming formulation onto the support.
[0027] The aerosol-generating film can be disposed on a support or sandwiched between other materials, which can enhance the mechanical stability of the film.
[0028] The aerosol-generating film may have a thickness of about 1 millimeter or less. For example, the aerosol-generating film may have a thickness of about 0.8 millimeters or less.
[0029] As used herein in connection with the present invention, the term "thickness" is used to describe the minimum distance measured between opposing substantially parallel surfaces of an aerosol-generating film.
[0030] As further described below, the aerosol-generating film may be formed by drying a cast or extruded aqueous liquid film-forming composition that includes a cellulosic film former, a non-cellulosic thickener, and a polyhydric alcohol. In such embodiments, the cast or extruded aqueous liquid film-forming composition may advantageously not shrink substantially during drying, despite loss of water. As a result, the thickness of the aerosol-generating film may substantially correspond to the thickness of the cast or extruded aqueous liquid film-forming composition.
[0031] Preferably, the aerosol-generating film has a thickness of about 0.6 millimeters or less. More preferably, the aerosol-generating film has a thickness of about 0.4 millimeters or less. Most preferably, the aerosol-generating film has a thickness of about 0.2 millimeters or less.

[0037] Aerosol-generating films having a thickness of about 0.1 millimeters to about 0.2 millimeters can advantageously exhibit low thermal inertia and good mechanical strength.
[0038] Preferably, the aerosol-generating film has a basis weight of at least about 60 grams per square meter (gsm). More preferably, the aerosol-generating film has a basis weight of at least about 80 gsm. Most preferably, the aerosol-generating film has a basis weight of at least about 100 gsm. Most preferably, the aerosol-generating film has a basis weight of about 300 gsm or less. [0041] More preferably, the aerosol-generating film has a basis weight of about 80 gsm to about 400 gsm. For example, the aerosol-generating film may have a basis weight of about 80 gsm to about 350 gsm, about 80 gsm to about 300 gsm, about 80 gsm to about 280 gsm, or about 80 gsm to about 260 gsm.

[0043] For example, an aerosol-generating film having a basis weight of from about 120 gsm to about 400 gsm, from about 120 gsm to about 350 gsm, from about 120 gsm to about 300 gsm, from about 120 gsm to about 280 gsm, or from about 120 gsm to about 260 gsm.

[0045] In embodiments in which the aerosol-generating film is self-supporting, the weight of the aerosol-generating film may be measured directly by weighing the aerosol-generating film.
[0046] In embodiments in which the aerosol-generating film is disposed on a substrate, the weight of the aerosol-generating film can be calculated by weighing the substrate before disposing the aerosol-generating film thereon, then weighing the substrate with the aerosol-generating film disposed thereon, and then subtracting the weight of the substrate from the combined weight of the aerosol-generating film and substrate.
[0047] In embodiments in which the aerosol-generating film is sandwiched between other materials, the weight of the aerosol-generating film can similarly be calculated by subtracting the weight of the other materials from the combined weight of the aerosol-generating film support and the other materials.

[0049] The aerosol-generating film comprises a cellulosic film former, a non-cellulosic thickener, and a polyhydric alcohol.
[0050] As used herein in connection with the present invention, the term "cellulosic film former" is used to describe a cellulose polymer that is capable of forming a continuous film by itself or in the presence of a non-cellulosic thickener.
[0051] Preferably, the cellulosic film former is a cellulose ether.
[0052] As used herein in connection with the present invention, the term "non-cellulosic thickener" is used to describe a non-cellulosic material that, when added to an aqueous or non-aqueous liquid film-forming composition, increases the viscosity of the liquid film-forming composition without substantially modifying other properties. Non-cellulosic thickeners can increase the stability and improve the suspension of ingredients in the liquid film-forming composition. Thickeners may also be referred to as "thickening agents" or "rheology modifiers."

[0106] As used herein in connection with the present invention, the term "alkaloid compound" is used to describe any one of a class of naturally occurring organic compounds that contain one or more basic nitrogen atoms. Generally, alkaloid compounds contain at least one nitrogen atom in an amine-type structure. This nitrogen atom or another nitrogen atom in the molecule of the alkaloid compound may be active as a base in an acid-base reaction. Most alkaloid compounds have one or more of the nitrogen atoms of the alkaloid compound as part of a ring system, such as a heterocyclic ring.
