[0006] In describing embodiments of the present invention, specific terminology is selected for the sake of clarity, however, the present invention is not limited to the specific terminology so selected, and it is to be understood that each specific term includes all technical equivalents that operate in a similar manner to accomplish a similar purpose.
[0007] Nutrition is a key factor in the growth and development of crops. Insufficient and inadequate availability of nutrients to plants results in lack of proper growth and physiological development. As a result, plants become more susceptible to attack by pests. Other problems associated with agriculture are environmental conditions such as drought, biotic and abiotic stresses, poor soil conditions or depletion of nutrients in the soil, resulting in reduced yield and product quality. Therefore, providing adequate and balanced nutrition in such a way that maximum uptake of nutrients by the plants is achieved, along with crop protection, is a major challenge. Optimizing soil conditions and managing crop nutrient use has been a long felt need by farmers to improve crop nutrient use efficiency. Considerable research has been carried out to improve soil and plant health, providing better economic benefits to farmers and also reducing the burden on the environment due to the widespread use of synthetic pesticides.
[0008] In parallel, hidden hunger and micronutrient deficiencies across the population are widespread in all major continents, contributing substantially to the global disease burden. Among the micronutrient deficiencies commonly suffered by people across the globe, iron (Fe) and (Zn) are two important nutrients found in human nutrition and are the most common micronutrient deficiencies worldwide. Fe deficiency is found in 20%-25% of the world's population, while Zn deficiency is found in 17.3% of the world's population (Cooper et al., 2012). One of the important underlying causes of this is unbalanced fertilization practices. Excessive and indiscriminate application of nutrients can cause serious imbalances and antagonisms resulting in nutrient deficiency products. Hence, growing food in large quantities while maintaining quality in terms of nutrient content is a very challenging and difficult task.
[0009] Moreover, modern agriculture is challenged by the overuse of synthetic fertilizers such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium-based fertilizers, and soils that have been degraded due to over-cultivation that produces and harvests nutrient-deficient crops, ultimately affecting human nutrition and health. More than 30% of the earth's surface is covered with calcareous soils that also pose challenges in terms of providing adequate zinc and iron nutrients to crops. Moreover, with increasing labor and water scarcity and the demand for high and quality yields, current agricultural practices are increasingly challenged by deteriorating soil health, water table deficiencies, declining soil fertility, leaching of fertilizers and pesticides, and deficiencies of micronutrients in the soil. Excessive use of synthetic fertilizers has led to a huge imbalance in soil nutrients. To achieve similar yields, almost double the amount of fertilizers such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are applied to the soil today than was applied 20 or 30 years ago. It has been observed that excess nitrogen fertilizers lead to a reduction in exchangeable calcium and magnesium ions in the soil, which are no longer available to plants, resulting in hindrances to plant growth and soil health. Long-term use of synthetic NPK fertilizers also acidifies the soil, causing it to decompose and limiting the uptake of other essential nutrients, including zinc, iron, calcium, and magnesium. Excessive amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and calcium in the soil further lead to nutrient imbalances, with the end product being deficiencies in essential nutrients, especially zinc and iron (due to excess phosphorus) and magnesium (due to excess calcium and nitrogen).
[0010] The role of micronutrients as essential elements required for growth and reproduction by plants has long been known. Micronutrients play an important role in balancing crop nutrition. It is further known that optimal levels of nutrients are required for normal plant function, growth, and any dispersion in nutrient levels can cause stunting of overall crop growth and reduce its health due to deficiency and / or toxicity. Insufficient availability of fertilizers or nutrients to plants results in lack of proper growth, which makes the plants more susceptible to attack by pests. In fact, even though some soil types hold adequate amounts of micronutrients, including iron, zinc, and other elements, their bioavailability for crop uptake is limited due to various factors, and the final harvest is observed to be deficient in these nutrients.
[0011] In addition to low concentrations of essential micronutrients in soil, one of the underlying causes of deficiency is low availability of micronutrients in their oxidized form to plant roots. Furthermore, leaching of water-soluble nutrients due to rain and irrigation also reduces the availability of nutrients in soil. Furthermore, crop nutrition management is difficult due to factors such as various carbonate levels in soil, soil salinity, soil moisture, soil alkalinity, low temperature, and concentrations of other elements, i.e., "competitive trace elements," that can affect the availability of micronutrients and sometimes even result in micronutrient deficiencies. Furthermore, the ability of plants to respond to micronutrient availability ultimately affects human nutrition, both in terms of crop yield and micronutrient concentrations in edible tissues. Proper nutrition is therefore crucial to optimize plant nutrition and metabolism, which contributes to overall crop yield and quality.
[0012] Interactions in plant nutrition can be either antagonistic or synergistic depending on the mixture of elements and their composition, concentration, etc., which can affect nutrient use efficiency. Due to the application of excess nutrients, plants can suffer from "nutrient antagonism", whereby an excess of a particular element can block the absorption of another element needed by the plant, which can occur with elements of similar size and charge (positive or negative) that can result in a deficiency in the plant. Some of the most common antagonisms are iron blocking zinc, manganese (or vice versa), magnesium blocking calcium (or vice versa), and potassium blocking both magnesium and calcium. Another reason for deficient plants is the "binding" that occurs when elements are mixed together and combined, forming compounds that are insoluble and cannot be absorbed by the plant roots. It is therefore imperative to apply balanced amounts of the most limiting nutrients to obtain the highest yields and minimize nutrient losses. A paper titled “Iron-magnesium antagonism in growth and metabolism of radish; Agarwala SC and SC Mehrotra et al; 1984” reported iron-magnesium antagonism in crops, while another paper titled “Effects of Nutrient Antagonism and Synergism on Yield and Fertilizer Use Efficiency; Rene PJJ Rietra, Marius Heinen et al; 2017” reported antagonism between zinc and magnesium. Moreover, antagonism between Fe and Zn is also well known (Alloway, 2008 & Kabata-Pendias, 2001).
[0013] Magnesium (Mg) is an essential macroelement required for plant growth, health, and development. Magnesium is involved in several different processes, including photosynthesis. Magnesium's most important role is as the central element or nucleus in the chlorophyll molecule. Without magnesium, chlorophyll cannot capture the solar energy required for photosynthesis. Magnesium also helps activate certain enzyme systems involved in the normal metabolism of plants. Additionally, it is required for cell division and protein formation, and is an essential component of plant respiration.
[0014] The availability of magnesium in soil depends on a number of factors. Among them are the source rock material, the degree of weathering, the local climate and the particular agricultural system, its management practices, such as crop type, crop intensity, crop rotation, and fertilization practices. Due to its high mobility in the plant, magnesium deficiency symptoms appear first in the lower older leaves, and then the symptoms become visible in the younger leaves. Symptoms appear as yellow leaves along the margins with green veins (interveinal chlorosis). Purple, red, or brown spots may also appear on the leaves. Magnesium and its importance in crop production and agriculture has been overlooked for some time, even though it is an essential element for plant growth and development. This is due to the fact that potential magnesium deficiency is difficult to detect.
[0015] Furthermore, iron (Fe) is also an essential nutritional element required for the growth, development and reproduction of plants or crops, but in relatively small amounts, thus making it a micronutrient. Iron is involved in many important physiological processes in plants, such as the production of chlorophyll and a range of enzymes and proteins. It also plays a vital role in respiration, nitrogen fixation, energy transfer and metabolism in crops and plants. Iron is a relatively fixable iron, and once incorporated into tissues, it remains in the upper parts of the plant. As a result, the translocation of iron from one plant part to another is restricted, leading to iron deficiency. Such deficiency in plants or crops generally causes chlorosis (yellowing). Insufficient iron nutrition also results in poor nodulation of legume crops, leading to reduced size and yield.
[0016] It has been observed that managing iron nutrition in crops is challenging due to factors such as carbonate levels in the soil, salinity, soil moisture, soil alkalinity, low temperature, and concentrations of other nutritional elements (e.g., competing trace elements such as phosphorus, calcium, etc.) that can affect iron availability and sometimes result in iron deficiency. Also, the ability of plants to respond to iron availability not only affects crop yield and iron concentration in edible plant tissues, but ultimately affects plant nutrition. Therefore, proper iron assimilation by crops is crucial to optimize crop nutrition and metabolism, which contributes to overall crop yield and quality.
[0017] The role of zinc (Zn) as an essential micronutrient has also long been known. It is an important component of several enzymes and proteins responsible for driving many metabolic reactions in crop plants and is crucial for plant development. Zinc activates enzymes responsible for the synthesis of certain proteins. It is used in the formation of chlorophyll and several carbohydrates, the conversion of starch to sugar, and its presence in plant tissues helps plants to tolerate low temperatures. Zinc is an essential element for the formation of auxins, which help in the control of growth and stem elongation.
[0018] Zinc is immobilized, causing deficiency symptoms to occur in new leaves. Typically, they are manifested by some variable pattern of chlorosis of new leaves (often between the veins) and necrotic spots may form on the apical edges of the leaves, resulting in leaves that are smaller in size and often cupped or distorted upwards. Symptoms also include reduced flowering and branching, poor bud development resulting in shorter internodes, resulting in a rosette appearance of the plant. Hydrocarbon, protein, and chlorophyll formation are significantly reduced in zinc-deficient plants. A constant and continuous supply of zinc is therefore necessary for optimal growth and maximum yield.
[0019] Although the benefits of micronutrients are well known, their deficiency has become widespread over the past few decades in most of the agricultural domains of the world, and as a result, micronutrients have been shown to be limiting factors for improved plant growth, higher yields, and fertilizer efficiency.
[0020] Agricultural compositions containing combinations of micronutrients in the form of approximately powder or dust are known in the art, and the micronutrients are blended and mixed together. However, such powder-based compositions are believed to result in a non-uniform or inhomogeneous mixture of active agents, which is considered undesirable for their application, and also insufficient uptake of nutrients by plants. Powder compositions not only have practical application challenges such as dust generation, but also impose risks for most users due to eye irritation, respiratory risks, and skin irritation. Such formulations are also not easily dispersible and tend to clog nozzles when applied via drip, making them unsuitable for use in irrigation systems. Furthermore, these compositions are also found to have poor suspendability, resulting in random and non-uniform distribution of active ingredients to target areas, causing undesirable effects, imposing problems in efficient delivery of nutrients to plants or crops, and requiring large amounts to be used.
[0021] Traditionally, micronutrient-based compositions are also known in the art in the form of bentonite granules or pastilles, pellets, granules prepared through melting processes, etc. Such products of micronutrient combinations in the form of granules or pellets or pastilles are composed of swelling clays and are associated with several drawbacks. These compositions generally contain swelling clays that are larger in size and swell on contact with moisture and disintegrate into non-uniformly sized large particles. Such granules or pastilles also result in an irregular release of micronutrients that do not meet plant nutritional requirements, ultimately resulting in poor field efficacy. Again, these types of micronutrient compositions are only suitable for widespread application, and due to their own drawbacks, namely poor dispersion and suspendability in water due to their disintegration into larger particle sizes, resulting in nozzle clogging in spray applications and posing problems for the delivery of nutrients to plants or crops. Due to these drawbacks, such prior art compositions containing micronutrients have negligible commercial availability or applicability in drip or sprinkler irrigation systems, which are essential forms of irrigation today due to labor shortages and water scarcity.
[0022] There are granular or powder compositions known in the art that involve the use of water-soluble nutrients. However, such compositions during heavy rainfall or irrigation tend to be washed away, and the plants fail to absorb them, thus causing groundwater pollution. The soil becomes more saline, and the plants cannot extract more water and nutrients from the soil. This not only results in a significant loss of efficiency, but also has serious environmental problems.
[0023] Compositions including fertilizer granules coated with a micronutrient mixture or water-disintegrating granules of micronutrients are also known in the art. However, such compositions are designed in such a way that they release the active agent very slowly so that the active agent is fixed in the soil for a long period of time, depriving the plant of its immediate nutritional requirements. Nutritional deficiencies in the plant during its early stages result in its susceptibility to various diseases, ultimately hindering its growth and yield. Furthermore, water-disintegrating granular compositions due to non-uniform disintegration and distribution of particles suffer from their own combination of disadvantages. Due to the disintegration into random and non-uniform particle sizes, such compositions tend to clog nozzles when applied via drip, making them unsuitable for use in modern irrigation systems.
[0024] Moreover, other formulations disclosed in the art may lead people to liquid compositions. However, such compositions have low activity loads due to the presence of large amounts of solvents as carriers, and therefore are not very effective in meeting dietary nutritional requirements. Also, being liquid, it is not feasible to transport such large amounts of products.
[0025] Suitable water-dispersible granular compositions containing magnesium in combination with iron and zinc are not known that would be made available to plants in effective amounts, thus meeting the balanced nutritional requirements of plants and addressing shortcomings such as nutrient antagonism of such compositions known in the art.
[0026] Despite the known antagonism between Zn-Fe, Zn-Mg, and Mg-Zn, it has always been difficult to develop an agricultural composition that overcomes this problem and successfully meets the nutritional requirements of plants. The inventors have unexpectedly found that the composition of the present invention, which contains magnesium, zinc, and iron, is not only effective in overcoming the antagonism between these individual nutrients, but also shows synergistic effects. The composition of the present invention, when formulated at a specific particle size, has been found to make the nutrients magnesium, zinc, and iron readily available for uptake by plants. The inventors have shown that application of the composition results in a more balanced uptake of magnesium, iron, and zinc, as well as other nutrients that remain locked up in the soil, providing a natural biological enrichment solution in a sustainable manner even in degraded soils.
[0027] It has been observed that the composition of the present invention, which comprises a combination of water-insoluble salts, complexes, or derivatives of magnesium, zinc, and iron in specific ratios, exhibits unexpected effects when formulated into a water-dispersible granular form with a specific particle size distribution. It has been found that the composition of the present invention addresses the challenge of antagonism between nutrients in soil, i.e., zinc and iron, magnesium and zinc, magnesium and iron, etc. It has also been observed that the composition of the present invention prevents the leaching of these nutrients, making them maximally available for uptake by crops and increasing overall yield.
[0028] It is known in the art that optimal adsorption of most micronutrients or macronutrients by plants occurs in soils with acidic or neutral pH. However, the inventors of the present invention have unexpectedly discovered that the composition of the present invention provides nutrient uptake even in soils with alkaline pH or calcareous soils. Thus, in addition to overcoming the challenge of nutrient antagonism, the composition of the present invention is found to be effective in all soil types, making it a very feasible composition for all terrains. Furthermore, it has been shown that the presence of magnesium (Mg) together with zinc and iron in the form of the composition of the present invention not only facilitates the uptake of a significant proportion of iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) present in the composition, but also allows plant uptake of micronutrients such as boron (B), manganese (Mn), calcium (Ca), etc., that are trapped in the soil.
[0029] The composition of the present invention has been found to play a vital role in adjusting the pH of soils that have deteriorated or changed in pH due to the overuse of synthetic fertilizers, and in facilitating nutrient uptake even in such soils. The composition of the present invention provides balanced uptake of essential nutrients such as zinc, iron, and magnesium, thus satisfying the nutritional needs of plants by overcoming the challenge of providing nutrient-rich crops in calcareous soils, which are known to provide competitive challenges with regard to the uptake of these nutrients, especially iron, zinc, and magnesium (Singh et.al., 1990, 1993).It was further surprising to observe that balanced uptake of nutrients leads to healthier plants that can withstand pest infestations, higher nutrient yields in all soil types, and finally improved overall soil health. The composition of the present invention acts as a nutrient use efficiency composition while satisfying the needs of crops by providing a multi-nutrient solution with improved uptake by crops in one application.
[0030] The inventors of the present invention have determined that a crop nutrition composition in the form of a water dispersible granule comprising a homogeneous mixture of an effective amount of one or more water insoluble magnesium salts, complexes or derivatives thereof, an effective amount of one or more water insoluble zinc salts, complexes or derivatives thereof, an effective amount of one or more water insoluble iron salts, complexes or derivatives thereof, and at least one agrochemically acceptable excipient; wherein the granules of the composition are in the size range of 0.05 mm to 4.0 mm, and the particles are in the size range of 0.1 microns to 20 microns, demonstrates superior field efficacy. The composition of the present invention further assists in regulating soil pH to facilitate balanced uptake of micronutrients.
[0031] The compositions of the present invention also exhibit excellent physical properties such as suspendability, dispersibility, and wettability. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

[0136] B. Field research: Experiment 1: To study the effect of water-dispersible granules containing water-insoluble zinc salts, water-insoluble magnesium salts and water-insoluble iron salts in wheat
[0137] Field experiment method: A field trial was conducted at Karnal, Haryana to see the efficacy of water dispersible granular composition comprising water insoluble zinc salts, water insoluble magnesium salts and water insoluble iron salts in wheat. The trial was designed during the rabi season with 13 treatments including an untreated control replicated four times in a randomized block design (RBD). A plot size of 30 square metres (6m x 5m) was maintained for each treatment. The test products were various zinc, iron and magnesium salts alone and their combinations in water dispersible granular composition according to the invention at prescribed doses in various concentration ranges were applied to the soil at the time of first irrigation of wheat (25 days after sowing). The wheat crop at the trial site was grown following good agricultural practices.

[0139] Observations were recorded at harvest and average data is presented in Table 1, listing the efficacy of water dispersible granule compositions prepared according to embodiments of the present invention.
[0140] [Table 1]
[0141] [Table 2]
[0142] From the data observed in Table 1, it can be seen that compositions T4, T8, and T12 according to embodiments of the present invention demonstrate synergistic behavior.
[0143] "Synergistic effect" is defined by Colby SR in an article published in 1967 entitled "Calculation of the synergistic and antagonistic responses of herbicide combinations" in Weeds, 1967, 15, p. 20-22. The predicted effect for a given combination of two active ingredients can be calculated as follows: E=X+Y+Z-(XY+YZ+XZ) / 100 +(XYZ) / 10000 During the ceremony, E = % efficacy predicted by a mixture of two products X, Y, and Z at a given dose. X = % observed effect of product A Y = % observed effect with product B Z = % observed effect of product C
[0144] The synergy factor (SF) is calculated by the Abbott equation (Eq. (2) (Abbott, 1925)). SF = observed effect / predicted effect where SF>1 for a synergistic reaction; SF<1 for an antagonistic reaction; SF=1 for an additive reaction.
[0145] A synergistic effect of the combination can be inferred when the percentage of the observed yield effect for the combination is greater than the predicted percentage, an additive effect can only be inferred when the percentage of the observed yield effect for the combination is equal to the predicted percentage, and an antagonistic effect of the combination can only be inferred when the percentage of the observed yield effect for the combination is less than the predicted percentage.
[0146] It can be observed that the synergistic factors are 1.35, 1.35, and 1.39 for treatments T4, T8, and T12 as seen in Table 1 which indicates the synergistic nature of the WDG compositions of "Zinc oxide + Iron (II) oxide + Magnesium hydroxide", "Zinc borate + Iron fumarate + Magnesium oxide", and "Zinc oxide + Iron silicate + Magnesium carbonate", respectively. This synergistic behavior of the "water insoluble zinc salt and water insoluble magnesium salt and water insoluble iron salt" in the form of WDG according to an embodiment of the present invention can be observed from the yield of wheat crop. Four treatments, namely T1 (32% zinc oxide WDG), T2 (15% iron(II) oxide WDG), T3 (40% magnesium hydroxide WDG), and T4 (6% zinc oxide + 6% iron(II) oxide + 80% magnesium hydroxide-WDG) were applied at the same active doses, i.e. 120.51 gm / ha zinc, 116.61 gm / ha iron, and 833.68 gm / ha magnesium. Treatment T4 shows the highest yield of about 40 quintals (Qt) / ha when compared to treatments T1 with a yield of -32 Qt / ha, T2 with a yield of -32 Qt / ha, and T3 with a yield of -34 Qt / ha. The expected % increase in yield was 21.44%, while the observed % increase in yield for treatment T4 was 29.03%, demonstrating synergistic effect.
[0147] Thus, the combination of 6% zinc oxide + 6% iron (II) oxide + 80% magnesium hydroxide in WDG form according to embodiments of the present invention is synergistic and provides higher crop yields when applied at the same dosage compared to application of the individual active agents. Similar trends in yield were observed for treatments T8, T12 when compared to treatments T5, T6, T7 and T9, T10, T11, respectively, indicating the synergistic behavior of compositions according to embodiments of the present invention.
[0148] It was observed that the plant height and tiller number in wheat crop was higher in treatment T12 of 20% ZnO+40% FeSiO+30% MgCO-WDG compared to the individual applications of active agents, i.e. T9 with 30% ZnO WDG, T10 with 30% FeSiO-WDG, and T11 with 30% MgCO-WDG. In comparison with treatments T9-T12, it can be shown that treatment T12 has a plant height and tiller number that are 48 cm and 8, respectively, whereas treatments T9, T10, and T11 have a plant height of 41.70, 39.50, 33 cm and 5, 5, and 4 tillers, respectively.
[0149] The untreated control also has a plant height of 29 cm and 3 tillers. It was also observed that the leaves of wheat plots treated with treatments T4, T8, and T12 were greener compared to treatments T1-T3, T5-T7, T9-T11 as well as the untreated plots where yellow leaves were observed.
[0150] It can also be observed from Table 1 that the availability of zinc, magnesium, and iron for WDG compositions prepared according to embodiments of the present invention is greater than that observed for the same actives applied autonomously at soil pH 6.5-7. It can also be seen that 4.5 mg, 3.5 mg, and 110 mg of zinc, iron, and magnesium were available for uptake for the T8 WDG composition - 40% zinc borate + 33% iron fumarate + 18% magnesium oxide, compared to only 2.1 mg, 1.4 mg, 1.5 mg of zinc, 1.2 mg, 1.3 mg, 1.2 mg of iron, and 67 mg, 65 mg, 70 mg of magnesium available for uptake to the plant with application of treatments T5, T6, and T7 of each individual active, respectively.
[0151] Furthermore, the observed zinc, iron, and magnesium uptakes from application of treatment T12, in which the WDG composition was prepared according to an embodiment of the present invention, were found to be higher when compared to the individual treatments T9-T12 and T13, i.e., WDG compositions of 20% zinc oxide + 40% iron silicate, in which active Zn and Fe were applied at the same active doses as in T9-T12. It was unexpected to observe that only 1.6 mg zinc, 1.1 mg iron, and 75 mg magnesium were available for uptake for treatment T13. However, with application of T12-20% zinc oxide + 40% iron silicate + 30% magnesium carbonate-WDG, the availability of zinc, iron, and magnesium dramatically increased to 3.8 mg, 3.7 mg, and 124 mg, respectively, even though T12 and T13 were applied at the same active doses of zinc and iron. This visible increase in zinc and iron availability observed in treatment T12 was shown to be due to the presence of magnesium along with zinc and iron in the composition formulated according to an embodiment of the present invention, i.e., the composition in the form of water dispersible granules having a particle size of 0.1 microns to 20 microns in treatment 12, which facilitates increased availability of the full range of micronutrients present in the composition, i.e., magnesium, iron, and zinc, to be taken up by the crop.
[0152] Thus, a composition comprising a combination of a water-insoluble zinc salt and a water-insoluble magnesium salt and a water-insoluble iron salt in the form of a water-dispersible granule has been shown to demonstrate better uptake of magnesium, zinc, and iron when compared to application of the active agents individually as well as to application of magnesium-depleted iron and zinc only compositions.
[0153] From the foregoing data, it can be concluded that compositions comprising "water insoluble zinc salt and water insoluble magnesium salt and water insoluble iron salt" in the form of a WDG according to embodiments of the present invention at various dosages and in the concentration ranges described in the claims demonstrated significantly higher uptake of micronutrients, higher yield, plant height, root development, and number of tillers.
[0154] The inventors of the present invention further observed that apart from the zinc, magnesium, and iron salts listed in Table 1 above, other zinc, magnesium, and iron salts as claimed in the present application also exhibit similar effects when applied according to the embodiments of the present invention.
[0155] Experiment 2: To study the effect of the water dispersible granule composition of the present invention on peanut crops
[0156] Field trials were conducted at Wadgaon for evaluation of embodiments of the compositions of the present invention. The study was carried out at Khed, Maharashtra on groundnut crop, variety: Kasturi 108. The trial was designed in Random Block Design (RBD) with 9 treatments including untreated control with 4 replicates. Plot size of 35 square meters (7m x 5m) was maintained for each treatment. The test nutrient composition of various zinc, iron, magnesium salts alone and their combinations in the form of water dispersible granules according to the present invention in various concentration ranges with prescribed dosages was applied at the time of sowing of the groundnut crop as basal application.
[0157] Experimental details are as follows: a) Test location: Wadgaon Khed, Maharashtra b) Crop: Peanut (variety: Kasturi 108) c) Experimental season: Rabi 2022 d) Study design: Randomized block design e) Repetition: 4 f) Processing: 6 g) Plot size: 7m x 5m = 35 sq. meters h) Application date: January 17, 2022 i) Sowing date: January 18, 2022 j) Application method: basal fertilizer k) Harvest date: June 17, 2022 l) Soil pH: 6.5-7
[0158] Observations were recorded at harvest and average data is presented in Table 2 listing the efficacy of water-dispersible granules of "water-insoluble zinc salt and water-insoluble magnesium salt and water-insoluble iron salt" prepared according to an embodiment of the present invention.
[0159] [Table 3]
[0160] [Table 4]
[0161] From the data observed in Table 2, it can be seen that compositions T4, T8 according to embodiments of the present invention demonstrate synergistic behavior.
[0162] The selected water-insoluble iron salts, zinc salts, and magnesium salts and concentrations used in the above tables are exemplary and may be substituted with alternative water-insoluble iron salts, zinc salts, and magnesium salts, respectively, according to embodiments of the present invention.
[0163] Based on the data presented in Table 2 and the calculations made, the expected percentage increase in groundnut kernel yield is: 32.07 % and 32.06 However, from Table 2 above, it can be clearly seen that treatment T4 with 5% Zinc Borate + 6% Iron Silicate + 1% Magnesium Oxide-WDG according to an embodiment of the present invention showed 42.16% increase in yield of groundnut kernels and treatment T8 with 20% Zinc Silicate + 30% Iron Fumarate + 40% Magnesium Carbonate-WDG composition showed 52.45% increase in yield of groundnut kernels.
[0164] However, treatments T1 with 20% zinc borate WDG, T2 with 24% iron silicate WDG, and T3 with 20% magnesium oxide WDG demonstrated only 10.39%, 7.84%, and 13.73% kernel yield of the peanut crop, respectively. Similarly, treatments T5 with 30% zinc silicate WDG, T6 with 30% iron fumarate WDG, and T7 with 40% magnesium carbonate demonstrated only 6.86%, 4.61%, and 17.65% increase in kernel yield of the peanut crop, respectively. Thus, treatments T4 and T8 with water dispersible granules according to embodiments of the present invention demonstrated synergistic effects compared to treatments with individual active agents. The results are even more surprising since all treatments T1-T4 and T5-T8 were applied with the same dosage of zinc, iron, and magnesium salts, i.e., 625.05 g / ha zinc, 394.30 g / ha iron, 120.62 g / ha magnesium, and 352.14 g / ha zinc, 295.85 g / ha iron, 346.01 g / ha magnesium, respectively, applied to the soil.
[0165] Moreover, treatments T4 and T8 showed the highest number of pods / plant of about 16.5 and 16.8 respectively when compared to the number of pods / plant observed for treatments T1-T7, i.e. between 14.1-14.9.
[0166] It was also observed that treatments T4, T8 with compositions according to embodiments of the present invention were highly effective in controlling Fusarium wilt fungus on eggplant at harvest compared to treatments T1-T3 and T5-T7. The control percentage was observed to be 83.3% and 72.2% with application of T4, T8, respectively, compared to treatments T1-T3, T5-T7, which were 11.11%, 5.55%, 11.11%, 5.55%, 11.11%, and 16.6%, respectively. It can be observed that the compositions of the present invention can meet the overall nutritional requirements of the plant, which can then withstand pest infestation and ultimately result in a better yield.
[0167] It can further be seen from Table 2 that treatments T4 and T8 with compositions according to embodiments of the invention showed a surprising uptake of nutrients such as zinc, magnesium and iron that were not observed in treatments T1-T3 and T5-T7, i.e. not observed with the individual applications of said active agents, even when the active agents were applied at the same application doses at soil pHs of 6.5-7. This visible increase in nutrient availability observed in treatments T4, T8 is due to the presence of magnesium together with zinc and iron in the compositions formulated according to embodiments of the invention, i.e. formulated in the form of water dispersible granules with particle sizes ranging from 0.1 microns to 20 microns, which has been shown to increase the availability of the full range of micronutrients present in the compositions, i.e. magnesium, iron and zinc, to be taken up by the crop.
[0168] From the foregoing data, it can be concluded that the composition comprising "water insoluble zinc salt and water insoluble magnesium salt and water insoluble iron salt" in the form of a WDG according to an embodiment of the present invention demonstrated significantly higher uptake of micronutrients, higher yield, number of pods / plant, plant height, and number of branches / plant at various dosages and in the concentration ranges recited in the claims.
[0169] The inventors of the present invention further observed that apart from the zinc, magnesium, and iron salts listed in Table 2 above, other zinc, magnesium, and iron salts as claimed in the present application also show similar effects when applied according to embodiments of the present invention.
[0170] Experiment No. 3: To evaluate the effect of particle size distribution in a composition containing zinc oxide + iron oxide + magnesium oxide - WDG on cauliflower yield
[0171] Field experiment method: A field trial was conducted to observe the effect of different range of particle sizes for the composition Zinc Oxide + Iron Oxide + Magnesium Oxide-WDG on the yield of cauliflower at Nasik, Maharashtra.
[0172] The trial was laid out during spring in a randomized block design (RBD) with 4 replicates with 5 treatments including an untreated control. A plot size of 30 square meters (6m x 5m) was maintained for each treatment. The test product at the prescribed dose was applied by drip irrigation 15 days after transplanting of cauliflower. Cauliflower crops at the trial site were grown following good agricultural practices. Cauliflower seeds, variety Pant Shubhra, were used to sow with 50cm spacing between rows and 30cm spacing between plants.
[0173] Experimental details a) Test location: Nasik, Maharashtra b) Crop: Cauliflower (Pant Shubhra) c) Experimental season: Spring - March to May d) Study design: Randomized block design e) Repetition: 4 f) Processing: 5 g) Plot size: 6m x 5m = 30 sq. meters h) Transplant date: March 1, 2022 i) Date of application: March 14, 2022 j) Application method: Drip irrigation k) Harvest date: May 13, 2022
[0174] Yield observations were recorded at harvest and average data is presented in Table 3 to see the effect of particle size distribution of WDG composition containing "water insoluble zinc salt, water insoluble magnesium salt, and water insoluble iron salt" on cauliflower yield.
[0175] [Table 5]
[0176] [Table 6]
[0177] From Table 3, it can be seen that treatment T1 (a water dispersible granule composition of 30% zinc oxide + 25% iron oxide + 35% magnesium oxide according to an embodiment of the present invention, with a particle size ranging from 0.1 micron to 20 micron) showed a significant increase in cauliflower yield and average floret weight when compared to treatment T2 of 30% zinc oxide + 25% iron oxide + 35% magnesium oxide water dispersible granule with a particle size ranging from 0.1 to 50 micron, and treatment T3 of 30% zinc oxide + 25% iron oxide + 35% magnesium oxide-WDG with a particle size ranging from 0.1 to 100 micron. It was observed that treatment T1 showed a surprisingly significant 27.18% increase in cauliflower yield, whereas treatments T2 and T3 only showed a 11.36% and 7.73% increase in yield, respectively, when compared to the untreated control.
[0178] Further, uptake of nutrients such as iron, magnesium, zinc was found to be significantly higher in treatment T1 as compared to treatments T2 and T3. Thus, superior efficacy in terms of yield and nutrient uptake was observed with the water dispersible granule formulation according to the present invention, which composition was shown to contain particles in the size range of 0.1 microns to 20 microns as compared to water dispersible granule formulations of higher particle size range.
[0179] Experiment 4: To evaluate the efficacy of different formulations of water-insoluble iron salts, water-insoluble zinc salts, and water-insoluble magnesium salts in commercially grown tomato crop fields
[0180] Field experiment method: The trial was designed during Kharif season in a randomized block design (RBD) with 4 replications with 13 treatments including an untreated control. A plot size of 40 square meters (8m x 5m) was maintained for each treatment. The compositions evaluated included various formulations including zinc, iron and magnesium salts only and combinations of water insoluble zinc, iron and magnesium salts, where zinc, iron and magnesium salts were applied in each treatment at the same dosage. The compositions were applied via bend / side placement just before the flowering stage of the tomato crop. The tomato crop at the trial site was grown following good agricultural practices. Tomato seeds, variety Veer 2182, were used for the study and planted at row spacing of 120cm and plant spacing of 45cm. The details of the experiment are as follows:
[0181] Experimental details a) Test location: Jaulkedindori, Nasik (MH) b) Crop: Tomato (variety Veer 2182) c) Experimental season: Kharif 2021 d) Study design: Randomized block design e) Repetition: 4 f) Processing: 6 g) Plot size: 8m x 5m = 40 sq. meters h) Application date: July 27, 2021 i) Application Method: Bend / Side Placement j) Porting date: August 20, 2021 k) Collection dates: 1st - October 3, 2021; 2nd - October 11, 2021; 3rd - October 16, 2021; 4th - October 22, 2021; 5th - October 28, 2021; 6th - November 4, 2021
[0182] Fruit set observations were performed once a week by tagging newly opened flowers and counting the number of tagged flowers that had set fruit after one week. Fruit was harvested six times and weighed each time. The average data of all observations are presented in Table 4 to show the effect on tomato yield and other parameters of combinations including water-insoluble salts of zinc, magnesium, and iron in water-dispersible granule form according to the present invention and in pastille and powder form.
[0183] [Table 7]
[0184] From Table 4 above, it can be clearly seen that treatment T3 with 20% Zinc Silicate + 25% Iron Silicate + 45% Magnesium Silicate Hydrate WDG according to an embodiment of the present invention showed a yield increase of 26.17% in tomato fruit. However, treatment T1 with 20% Zinc Silicate + 25% Iron Silicate + 45% Magnesium Silicate Hydrate-Pellets demonstrated only a 9.03% increase, while treatment T2 with 20% Zinc Silicate + 25% Iron Silicate + 45% Magnesium Silicate Hydrate-Powder demonstrated only a 10.72% increase in tomato fruit yield. Based on the data and calculations made by referring to treatments T1-T6, the predicted percentage increase in fruit yield was 13.93%. Therefore, it can be shown that treatment T3-WDG according to the present invention demonstrated synergistic effects in comparison with the same treatments with pastilles or powder compositions, i.e. treatments T1, T2, respectively, and application of individual active agents, i.e. treatments T4-T6, despite being applied at the same dosages of zinc, iron, and magnesium, respectively. The results are all the more surprising since treatments T1 to T6 all had the same dosages of zinc, iron, and magnesium applied to the soil, i.e. zinc at 469.52 gm / ha, iron at 328.59 gm / ha, and magnesium at 313.81 gm / ha.
[0185] Furthermore, treatment T9 with 10% Zinc Oxide + 10% Iron (II) Oxide + 70% Magnesium Silicate Hydrate -WDG showed the highest fruit yield of about 515g compared to treatment T7 with 10% Zinc Oxide + 10% Iron (II) Oxide + 70% Magnesium Silicate Hydrate -Pellets (fruit yield 432g) and treatment T8 with 10% Zinc Oxide + 10% Iron (II) Oxide + 70% Magnesium Silicate Hydrate -Powder (fruit yield - 454g). It was further observed that treatments T3 and T9 with compositions according to embodiments of the invention showed increased lushness and improved tomato fruit size and color compared to the pastille and powder compositions, i.e. compared to treatments T1-T2 and T7-T8, respectively.
[0186] It is therefore noted that the "water-insoluble iron salt, water-insoluble zinc salt, and water-insoluble magnesium salt" compositions in the form of water-dispersible granules according to embodiments of the present invention have been shown to be synergistic in nature and have shown surprising enhancement in yield as well as improved plant physiological parameters as compared to other known formulation types.
[0187] Experiment No. 5: To study the effect of the water-dispersible granule composition of the present invention on eggplant
[0188] The trial was designed during the Rabi season, i.e., January to April, in a randomized block design (RBD) with four replications, with five treatments including an untreated control. The composition evaluated included the WDG composition of the present invention as a soil application after planting eggplant seedlings in the test plot. The eggplant crop at the test site was grown according to good agricultural practices.
[0189] Experimental details a) Test location: Dehgam, Gandhinagar b) Crop: Eggplant c) Experimental season: Rabi d) Test design: RBD e) Repetition: 5 f) Processing: 5 g) Plot size: 5 x 6 = 30 sq. meters h) Sowing date: December 10, 2021 i) Application date: December 10, 2021 j) Application method: Soil application near the root zone k) Crop variety: MAHY Super-10 l) Harvest date: March 10, 2022 m) Soil pH: 6-6.5
[0190] Observations were recorded at harvest and average data is shown in Table 5, listing the efficacy of water-dispersible granules containing "water-insoluble zinc salt, water-insoluble magnesium salt, and water-insoluble iron salt" prepared according to an embodiment of the present invention.
[0191] [Table 8]
[0192] [Table 9]
[0193] From Table 5, it can be observed that the WDG composition comprising zinc salt, iron salt, and magnesium salt according to the embodiment of the present invention shows a significant enhancement of nutrient uptake in acidic soil pH conditions where active Zn and Fe are applied at co-active doses, compared to the uptake observed in the application of the WDG composition of zinc salt + iron salt. For example: Treatment T2 with 25% zinc sulfide + 15% iron oxide + 50% magnesium silicate hydrate-WDG according to the embodiment of the present invention demonstrated an uptake of 2.67 mg zinc, 3.22 mg iron, and 20 mg magnesium, while treatment T1 with 20% zinc sulfide + 12% iron oxide-WDG lacking magnesium showed a reduced uptake of 0.21 mg zinc, 0.13 mg iron, and 4.6 mg magnesium, and zinc and iron uptake was found to be very low even at acidic soil pH, which is generally considered favorable for nutrient uptake. This visible increase in zinc and iron availability observed in treatment T2 is due to the presence of magnesium along with zinc and iron in the composition formulated according to an embodiment of the present invention, i.e. in the form of water dispersible granules with particle sizes ranging from 0.1 microns to 20 microns in treatment T2, which has been shown to facilitate increased availability of the full range of micronutrients present in the composition, i.e. magnesium, iron and zinc, for uptake by the crop.
[0194] Furthermore, application of treatment 4 with 4% zinc borate + 15% iron (II) oxide + 1% magnesium oxide-WDG according to an embodiment of the present invention showed a 43.11% increase in eggplant yield compared to treatment T3, which showed a 9.14% yield of eggplant. The increased efficacy with the composition according to an embodiment of the present invention is surprising since the dosages of zinc and iron applied in the WDG composition according to the present invention and the dosages in the binary treatment lacking magnesium, i.e. T3, are the same. Furthermore, similar results were observed with treatment T2 of the present invention when compared to treatment T1 with the binary composition of zinc salt + iron salt.
[0195] Furthermore, surprising efficacy was observed with respect to eggplant yield for treatments T2 and T4, in which three active agents according to an embodiment of the present invention are present, i.e., in a single composition at specific concentrations, and which comprises particles in the size range of 0.1 microns to 20 microns. It was further shown that treatments T2 and T4, with yield increases of about 40.86% and 43.11%, respectively, demonstrate higher efficacy when compared to a commercial micronutrient mixture, treatment T5, which showed only a 17.81% yield increase despite being applied at a high formulation dose.
[0196] It was further observed that in treatment T5, the uptake of zinc, iron and magnesium was found to be 1.2mg, 1.7mg and 8mg, respectively, and in treatment T3, the uptake of zinc, iron and magnesium was found to be 0.5, 0.4mg and 4.5mg, respectively. Meanwhile, in treatment T4, the uptake of zinc, iron and magnesium was found to be 3.67mg, 3.9mg and 16mg, respectively. This visible increase in zinc and iron availability observed in treatment T4 is shown to be due to the presence of magnesium along with zinc and iron in the composition formulated according to an embodiment of the present invention, i.e. in the form of water dispersible granules with particle size ranging from 0.1 micron to 20 micron in treatment T4, which facilitates the increased availability of the full range of micronutrients present in the composition, i.e. magnesium, iron and zinc, to be taken up by the crop. Thus, a composition comprising a combination of a water-insoluble zinc salt and a water-insoluble magnesium salt and a water-insoluble iron salt in the form of a water-dispersible granule has been shown to demonstrate better uptake of magnesium, zinc, and iron when compared to application of a commercial multi-nutrient powder composition, as well as magnesium-deficient iron and zinc only compositions.
[0197] From the above data, it can be concluded that the composition comprised of "water insoluble zinc salt and water insoluble magnesium salt and water insoluble iron salt" in the form of a WDG according to an embodiment of the present invention at various dosages and in the concentration ranges described in the claims demonstrated significantly higher intake, higher yield of micronutrients.
[0198] The present inventors have unexpectedly shown that the presence of magnesium in the composition of the present invention not only enhances the uptake of iron and zinc, but also enhances the uptake of other soil-sequestered micronutrients such as calcium, boron, which were previously completely unavailable to plants. The enhanced uptake of sequestered micronutrients such as boron and calcium can also be seen from the results presented in Table 5, which shows that treatments T2, T4 have the highest calcium and boron uptake compared to treatments T1, T3, T5, and the untreated control.
[0199] Thus, the composition of the present invention in the form of a water dispersible granular composition has been found to be a highly nutrient use efficient fertilizer.
[0200] Experiment No. 6: To study the effect of the composition of the present invention on the uptake of zinc, magnesium, and iron in different soil pH conditions
[0201] A pot trial experiment was conducted to observe the effect of the composition of the present invention in the form of WDG on availability of zinc, magnesium and iron in various soil types over a period of time in onion crop in a vinyl house at Nashik, Maharashtra (India).
[0202] Five pots measuring 20 cm top diameter x 15.5 cm bottom diameter x 16.5 cm height were arranged in a randomized block design (RBD) for each treatment and labeled to accommodate two treatments per experiment.
[0203] The prescribed doses of the test nutrient composition shown below were measured based on soil surface area calculations and applied to the top soil of each treatment pot and thoroughly mixed in the soil to a depth of 5 cm. Then, 25-day-old onion seedlings were planted in each pot. The onion seedlings in the five pots were grown under GAP (Good Agricultural Practice) until onion bulb harvest or full development.
[0204] The details of the process are as follows: T1-Zinc oxide 15% + iron(III) oxide 10% + magnesium silicate hydrate 60%-WDG T2-Zinc oxide 15% + Iron(III) oxide 10%-WDG
[0205] Experimental details are as follows: a) Test location: Nasik (Maharashtra) b) Crop: Onion (variety Nasik red) c) Experimental season: Rabi 2021-2022 d) Experimental design: Randomized block design with 5 pots for each treatment e) Repetition: 13 f) Processing: 7 g) Pot size: top diameter 20cm x bottom diameter 15.5cm x height 16.5cm h) Application date: November 22, 2021 i) Date of planting: November 22, 2021 j) Application method: Base fertilizer (soil application) k) Harvest date: March 2, 2022
[0206] Observations regarding nutrient uptake were recorded at the time of harvest and average data are presented in Tables 6A, 6B, and 6C listing the availability of zinc, magnesium, and iron under various pH conditions.
[0207] [Table 10]
[0208] [Table 11]
[0209] [Table 12]
[0210] Tables 6B and 6C show that zinc and iron were moderately available for uptake by treatment T2 when applied in both acidic and neutral soil pH, respectively, compared to that observed in treatment T2 (Table 6A), where the soil pH was alkaline, despite the same treatment, i.e., zinc oxide 15% + iron(III) oxide 10%-WDG, being applied at the same active doses of zinc and iron.
[0211] It was further observed from Tables 6A, 6B, and 6C that when treatment T1 with 15% zinc oxide + 10% iron (III) oxide + 60% magnesium silicate hydrate-WDG according to an embodiment of the present invention was applied, the uptake of nutrients such as zinc, magnesium, and iron was found to be relatively the same in all soil pH conditions. Comparing the results presented for treatments T1, T2 in Table 6A, it was further surprising to observe that the uptake of zinc and iron was found to be substantially increased in treatment T1 (according to an embodiment of the present invention) where magnesium silicate hydrate was added to the composition of 15% zinc oxide + 10% iron (III) oxide-WDG despite the alkaline pH, which was not observed in treatment T2.
[0212] Thus, it has been shown that the WDG composition of "water-insoluble iron salt, water-insoluble zinc salt, and water-insoluble magnesium salt" according to an embodiment of the present invention exhibits significantly higher uptake of iron and zinc even at alkaline pH, which was not observed for the binary mixture of iron and zinc salts at the same pH. From the observed results, it can be understood that the presence of magnesium along with zinc and iron in the composition formulated according to an embodiment of the present invention, i.e., in the form of water-dispersible granules having a particle size of 0.1 microns to 20 microns, facilitates the uptake of iron and zinc in alkaline soils, which was not observed for the magnesium-deficient composition, i.e., treatment T2.
[0213] Furthermore, T1-WDG treated according to embodiments of the present invention was found to be nutrient use efficient, demonstrating good renewal of all three nutrients in acidic, neutral, as well as alkaline pH soil conditions.
[0214] Experiment No. 7: Comparing the efficacy of the composition of the present invention to a commercial water-soluble powder of multiple nutrients in tomato crops
[0215] A field trial was conducted in a commercially grown tomato field in Nshik, Maharashtra to compare the efficacy of a WDG composition containing a combination of water insoluble salts of zinc, magnesium and iron against a commercial water soluble multi-nutrient powder, product "SPIC Nourish" (containing Zn, Fe, Mn, B, Mg, Cu), on tomato. The trial was designed in a randomized block design (RBD) with five treatments including an untreated control during the spring season from January 2022 to May 2022. The defined doses of the composition of the present invention were applied by drip irrigation 20 days after planting.
[0216] Tomato crops in the trial field were grown following good agricultural practices. Tomato seedlings of variety Avinash were used for planting in the trial field and were planted with 120 cm spacing between rows and 45 cm spacing between plants.
[0217] Experimental details a) Test location: Nasik (MH) b) Crop: Tomato – variety 'Avinash' c) Experimental season: Spring (January 2022 to May 2022) d) Study design: Randomized block design e) Repetition: 7 f) Processing: 3 g) Plot size: 8m x 5m = 40 sq. meters h) Date planted: January 9, 2022 i) Application date: January 30, 2022 j) Application method: Soil application by drip system
[0218] Experimental details a) Test location: Nasik (MH) b) Crop: Tomato – variety 'Avinash' c) Experimental season: Spring (January 2022 to May 2022) d) Study design: Randomized block design e) Repetition: 7 f) Processing: 3 g) Plot size: 8m x 5m = 40 sq. meters h) Date planted: January 9, 2022 i) Application date: January 30, 2022 j) Application method: Soil application by drip system
[0219] [Table 13]
[0220] From the treatment T1 in Table 7, it can be observed that the WDG composition prepared according to the embodiment of the present invention demonstrated better yield compared to the treatment T2 where the composition applied is a commercial water-soluble multi-nutrient mixture and the untreated plot. Treatment T1 showed about 31.56% yield increase despite being applied at a reduced dosage compared to treatment T5 where the yield increase was only 7.64%. Furthermore, it was observed that the tomato fruit weights from the application of T1 and T2 were 505g / plant and 400g / plant, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that the combination of "water-insoluble iron salt, water-insoluble zinc salt, and water-insoluble magnesium salt" in the form of WDG according to the embodiment of the present invention, even at a reduced dosage, shows a significant improvement in fruit weight and fruit yield over the case of the commercial water-soluble multi-nutrient mixture.
[0221] Experiment 8: To study the effect of the WDG composition of the present invention compared to traditional fertilizer practices
[0222] A field trial was conducted to determine the effect of the composition of the present invention on nutrient availability in onion crop, variety: Kasturi 108, with application of traditional fertilizer practices in calcareous soils of Junagadh, Gujarat, India. The trial was laid down in a randomized block design (BRD) with seven replicates, with three treatments including an untreated control. A plot size of 40 square meters (8m x 5m) was maintained for each treatment.
[0223] Soil was analyzed to assess nutrient availability prior to application of treatments and observations were as follows:
[0224] [Table 14]
[0225] Experimental details are as follows: a) Test location: Junagadh (Gujarat) b) Crop: Onion (variety: Red Onion-11) c) Experimental season: Rabi 2021~2022 d) Experimental design: Randomized block design with 5 pots for each treatment e) Repetition: 7 f) Processing: 3 g) Plot size: 8m x 5m = 40 sq. meters h) Application date: December 20, 2021 i) Date of planting: December 20, 2021 j) Application method: Base fertilizer (soil application) k) Harvest date: April 5, 2022 l) Soil pH: 8.35
[0226] Observations regarding nutrient availability in the onion crop were recorded at harvest and average data is presented in Table 8 listing the effect of the composition of the present invention on calcareous soil.
[0227] [Table 15]
[0228] From Table 8, it can be observed that treatment T1-WDG composition prepared according to an embodiment of the present invention demonstrated better uptake of nutrients in calcareous soil compared to treatments T2 and T3, i.e., commercial water soluble NPK fertilizer and commercial NPK containing water soluble micronutrient composition (Nutrifast, Stanes), respectively, and also compared to untreated plots.
[0229] It has been observed that the application practice of NPK and NPK containing other micronutrients such as calcium, boron, manganese, even at higher application doses, does not meet the nutritional requirements of plants, nor does it provide adequate intake of zinc, iron, and magnesium along with other nutrients observed in the composition of the present invention. Thus, it can be noted that the combination of water-insoluble iron salt, water-insoluble zinc salt, and water-insoluble magnesium salt in the form of WDG according to an embodiment of the present invention, despite being applied in calcareous soil, shows significant nutrient availability to plants compared to treatments T2 and T3, i.e., compared to synthetic fertilizer mixture.
[0230] From the observed results, it can be understood that the presence of magnesium along with zinc and iron in the composition formulated according to the embodiments of the present invention, i.e. in the form of water dispersible granules with particle size ranging from 0.1 micron to 20 microns, not only provides for the uptake of iron and zinc in calcareous soils, but also other micronutrients including manganese, calcium, boron, etc., which were not observed in commercial water soluble NPK fertilizers and commercial NPK containing water soluble micronutrient compositions, i.e. treatments T2, T3. The present invention not only facilitates the assimilation of essential nutrients such as magnesium, zinc, and iron, but also helps to liberate and make available for uptake by plants the micronutrients and trace elements that were not available for uptake in mineral rich calcareous soils, mainly due to the reported antagonism between Ca-Mg, Ca-Fe, and Ca-Zn.
[0231] Furthermore, the inventors of the present invention have also tested the WDG composition of the present invention on other crops such as chilli, chickpea. It has been observed that the composition of the present invention further enhances crop characteristics such as straw weight, plant height, and also enhances the nutritional value of the crop. Moreover, such combination may further help improve crop yield, improve photosynthesis, increase chlorophyll content and nutrient uptake by the crop.
[0232] It has been observed that the composition of the present invention demonstrates enhanced, effective and excellent behavior in the field. Through the composition of the present invention, the application frequency or amount of nutrients, fertilizers or pesticides is minimized. Furthermore, the composition of the present invention shows surprisingly high field efficacy with reduced application dose of the composition compared to the conventional known compositions. The composition is very safe for users and the environment. This novel composition helps improve plant yield, balanced uptake of all nutrients, reduced yellowing of leaves, and physiological parameters of plants, such as increasing rooting, improving foliage, improving disease resistance, and providing more lush and nutritious crops.
[0233] Additionally, various advantageous properties associated with the compositions according to the present invention include, but are not limited to, improved stability, improved toxicity and / or biotoxicity behavior, improved crop characteristics including crop yield, crop quality and characteristics, as well as other benefits familiar to those skilled in the art.
[0234] From the foregoing, it will be observed that numerous modifications and variations can be effected without departing from the true spirit and scope of the novel concepts of the present invention. It is to be understood that no limitations with respect to the specific embodiments illustrated are intended or should be inferred.
