A parking assistance method and a parking assistance device according to the present invention calculate a travel route from a current position of a vehicle to a target parking position, and control a parking operation of the vehicle on the basis of the travel route. When backward movement is selected with a select lever in a state in which the vehicle is stopped, at least one parking position candidate located behind the vehicle among the parking position candidates is extracted as a target parking position candidate and presented to the user. Then, one of the target parking position candidates is set as the target parking position on the basis of input of an instruction of the user via an operation unit.
