AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing methods for manufacturing silicone hydrogel contact lenses using hydrophobic molds result in reduced hydrophilicity, leading to issues like lens clouding, tear film rupture, and discomfort due to lipid and protein adherence, and existing surface treatment methods are either complex, unstable, or affect mechanical properties.

Method used

A silicone hydrogel composition containing a silicone (meth)acrylate, a hydrophilic monomer, and a non-polymerizable surfactant, specifically a sugar-based surfactant, is used with a hydrophobic mold, where the surfactant pseudo-hydrophilizes the mold surface, ensuring high surface hydrophilicity without the need for plasma treatment and maintaining stability over time.

Benefits of technology

The method produces contact lenses with excellent and stable surface hydrophilicity and transparency, reducing the risk of clouding and discomfort, while maintaining mechanical properties, and does not require complex surface treatments.

Abstract

Provided are: a silicone hydrogel having excellent surface hydrophilicity that is stable over a long period without requiring a surface treatment, e.g., a plasma treatment, even when a hydrophobic mold, e.g., a polypropylene mold, is used; and a method for producing the silicone hydrogel. A silicone hydrogel according to one aspect of the present invention contains water. In a dried object formed by removing the water from the silicone hydrogel, the ratio of the average value (A') of O / Si concentration ratios at a first measurement point to a third measurement point to the average value (B') of O / Si concentration ratios at a fourteenth measurement point to a sixteenth measurement point, A' / B', is 1.20 or higher, the measurement points being defined separately.
