Abstract

The present invention relates to a mechanical gas mixer for mixing gases, which has a mechanical operating principle for regulating the proportions between the gases that make up a support gas, such as a first gas like medical-grade air enriched with at least a second gas like medical-grade oxygen, where the percentage is defined for a total mass of the support gas supplied according to a medical indication. Known continuous-operation gas mixers require an electrical supply to operate their components, which poses a risk to patients requiring respiratory support for extended periods, since power outages can occur during respiratory support, rendering electrically dependent equipment unusable and potentially causing death to the patient.The mechanical gas mixer of the present invention comprises a gas inlet block, a gas mixing block, and a support gas outlet block, all coupled to form a single rigid body. A proportional swivel with a stirring chamber is housed in the gas mixing block and is controlled by a ratio adjustment knob. A plurality of calibrated orifices are located in the proportional swivel through which a gas flow is permitted to pass into the stirring chamber. The calibrated orifices are grouped according to the number of gases to be mixed to form the support gas; each calibrated orifice in each group has a different diameter, so that by varying the position of the knob, the proportion for each of the gases comprising the support gas supplied from the mechanical gas mixer is modified.
