Abstract

The present invention relates to the valorization of spent grains, a by-product of brewing, in an industrial application such as cement production. Initially, the invention concerns the physicochemical and molecular characterization of said spent grains, as well as their utilization as additives in Portland cement for the production of mortars. The present invention further relates to obtaining an optimal formulation for Portland cement using the design of experiments methodology with a Box-Behnken design. A compromise between the two responses studied made it possible to determine the composition of the optimum mixture suitable for the addition of 4.82% fresh distillers' grains, 0.65% powdered distillers' grains, and 1.04% dry distillers' grains.
