[0002] The invention relates to fragrance applicators, including perfume atomizers, for which compactness, portability, and reloadability are desirable, and for which the ability to change the fragrances to be applied is desirable.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The present invention solves problems in providing a fragrance applicator that is sized and proportioned to fit into a pocket, including a shirt pocket, or into a small purse, and that has a stylish exterior. Existing fragrance applicators may be too large to readily fit into a pocket or be too bulky to do so, or may expose an operational component, such as an actuator, to undesired input that may cause leaks or wastage of the fragrance.
[0004] The present invention solves problems in providing a fragrance applicator that can be reloaded and readily provide different fragrances with minimal work. Existing fragrance applicators may require switching all of the fragrance-bearing liquid therein to change the fragrance, or may require transferring such fluid from one container to another.BRIEF STATEMENT OF THE INVENTION
[0005] In an embodiment, the fragrance applicator has an atomizer connected to a pump assembly which is connected to a removeable fragrance cartridge, all of which are contained within a streamlined shell in the form of a pen. That shell, in an embodiment, includes a barrel and cap connected to the barrel, like that of a pen. The fragrance cartridge is removeable from the shell. The fragrance cartridges may be made of fragrance-grade glass or plastic. The removeable fragrance cartridge has a robust mechanical and fluidic connection to the pump assembly. The pump assembly has a robust mechanical and fluidic connection to the atomizer and is connected to a pushing actuator for operating the pump assembly, where the pushing actuator may include the atomizer.
[0006] In an embodiment, the fragrance applicator has a delivery system which is operatively connected to a removeable fragrance cartridge, both of which are contained within a streamlined shell in the form of a pen. That shell, in an embodiment, includes a barrel and cap connected to the barrel, like that of a pen. The fragrance cartridge retains a fragrance-bearing fluid therein and isolates that fluid from the barrel, and particularly the inside of the barrel. The fragrance cartridge is installable in a cartridge cavity in the barrel of the shell and is removeable from the shell. The removeable fragrance cartridge has a mechanical and fluidic connection to the delivery system. A delivery system may be a pump assembly, a roller assembly, or a wand assembly.
[0007] In an embodiment, the fragrance cartridge is removeable from the pump assembly and is installable therein. A fragrance cartridge, prior to installation, has a user-removable closure, such as a cartridge cap, to retain the fragrance-bearing fluid therein and isolate that fluid from the barrel, and particularly the inside of the barrel. The cartridge caps may be made of fragrance-grade silicone or other materials suitable for retaining fragrance-bearing liquids without undesirable interactions. The cap closes the outlet of that cartridge which may be the sole opening of the cartridge. Removing the cap exposes a connecting end of the cartridge containing that outlet, which may then be connected by inserting it into the shell and mechanically and fluidically connecting the cartridge to the pump assembly via a connection cavity on the pump assembly and a suction tube into the fragrance cartridge. The cartridge can then, when desired, be removed therefrom by disconnecting it from the pump assembly at the connection cavity and withdrawing it from the shell.

In this case, the roller assembly is mechanically and fluidically connected to the fragrance cartridge to permit applying the liquid from the fragrance cartridge by rolling the roller ball on the skin. A fragrance cartridge, prior to installation, has a user-removable closure, such as a cartridge cap, to retain the fragrance-bearing fluid therein. The cap covers the roller ball on that cartridge, where the roller assembly (and roller ball) close the sole opening of the fragrance cartridge. Removing the cap exposes that roller ball. The cartridge can then, when desired, be removed from the fragrance applicator by withdrawing it from the shell.
[0010] In an embodiment, the fragrance cartridge is removeable with the delivery system, which is in the form of a wand assembly, from the fragrance applicator and is installable therein. In this case, the wand assembly is mechanically and fluidically connected to the fragrance cartridge, and mechanically to the cap of the fragrance applicator, to permit applying the liquid from the fragrance cartridge by touching / sliding the tip of the wand of the wand assembly on the skin. A fragrance cartridge, prior to installation, has a user-removable closure, such as a cartridge cap, to retain the fragrance-bearing fluid therein. The cap covers a gasket on that cartridge, where the wand assembly, particularly the plug supporting the wand on the cap, close the sole opening of the fragrance cartridge. Removing the cap exposes that gasket, permitting insertion of the wand into the fluid and the plug into the gasket, and removal therefrom. Once removed, the cartridge can then, when desired, be removed from the fragrance applicator by withdrawing it from the shell.

In an embodiment having a removeable cap, removing the cap exposes a pushing actuator comprising an actuator nozzle head containing the atomizer that is mechanically and fluidically connected to the pump assembly. Pushing the actuator nozzle head operates the pump assembly to pump the fragrance bearing liquid from the fragrance cartridge through the atomizer. In an embodiment having a non-removeable cap, the cap is the pushing actuator and comprises the atomizer. Here, the atomizer is at the surface of the cap and is mechanically and fluidically connected to the pump assembly. Pushing the cap operates the pump assembly to pump the fragrance bearing liquid from the fragrance cartridge through the atomizer.

Interior structure may be molded plastic or metal.

After replacing the cap, if necessary, the user can then use the pen clip to safely store the fragrance applicator in a convenient location such as a shirt pocket. When the user desires to use a different fragrance, or the fragrance in the fragrance cartridge is expended, the user can then open the finial cartridge access by removing the removeable finial, disconnect the connecting end from the interior cartridge connection cavity of the pump assembly, remove the fragrance cartridge into the cartridge cavity, carry out the above process to insert a filled fragrance cartridge, and then replace the finial to secure the fragrance cartridge in the fragrance applicator.
[0018] In another embodiment, in use, a user may remove the cap from a filled fragrance cartridge including an integrated pump assembly, remove the cap from the fragrance applicator, separately remove the actuator nozzle head if required, open the pump access by removing the collar from the pump connection, insert the fragrance cartridge into the cartridge cavity, seat the seated end in the cartridge cup and the retainer on the cartridge shoulder, and reconnect the collar to the pump connection to secure the fragrance cartridge in the fragrance applicator. The user can then use the pushing actuator, removing the cap if necessary, to operate the pump assembly to draw fragrance-bearing fluid from the fragrance cartridge through the pump assembly to the atomizer and force it out of the atomizer to apply the fragrance. After replacing the cap, if necessary, the user can then use the pen clip to safely store the fragrance applicator in a convenient location such as a shirt pocket. When the user desires to use a different fragrance, or the fragrance in the fragrance cartridge is expended, the user can then remove the cap from a filled fragrance cartridge including an integrated pump assembly, remove the cap from the fragrance applicator, separately remove the actuator nozzle head if required, open the pump access by removing the collar from the pump connection, remove the fragrance cartridge into the cartridge cavity, carry out the above process to insert a filled fragrance cartridge, and separately replace the actuator nozzle head if required, to secure the fragrance cartridge in the fragrance applicator, and replace the fragrance applicator cap as required.
[0019] In another embodiment, in use, a user may remove the cap from a filled fragrance cartridge including a roller assembly, remove the cap from the fragrance applicator exposing a roller ball, open the pump access by removing the collar from the pump connection, insert the fragrance cartridge into the cartridge cavity, seat the seated end in the cartridge cup and the retainer on the cartridge shoulder, and reconnect the collar to the pump connection to secure the fragrance cartridge in the fragrance applicator. The user can then use the barrel to roll the roller ball on the skin, tilting the barrel distally down if necessary, to apply the fragrance-bearing fluid from the fragrance cartridge to the skin. After replacing the cap, if necessary, the user can then use the pen clip to safely store the fragrance applicator in a convenient location such as a shirt pocket. When the user desires to use a different fragrance, or the fragrance in the fragrance cartridge is expended, the user can then remove the cap from a filled fragrance cartridge including a roller assembly, remove the cap from the fragrance applicator, open the pump access by removing the collar from the pump connection, remove the fragrance cartridge into the cartridge cavity, carry out the above process to insert a filled fragrance cartridge, to secure the fragrance cartridge in the fragrance applicator, and replace the fragrance applicator cap as required.
[0020] In another embodiment, in use, a user may remove the cap from a filled fragrance cartridge including a gasket of a wand assembly, remove the cap from the fragrance applicator and pull the wand and tip out of the existing fragrance cartridge through the gasket, open the pump access by removing the collar from the pump connection, insert the fragrance cartridge into the cartridge cavity, seat the seated end in the cartridge cup and the retainer on the cartridge shoulder, and reconnect the collar to the pump connection to secure the fragrance cartridge in the fragrance applicator. The user can then use the cap to insert the wand though the gasket of the new fragrance cartridge to coat the wand and tip with the fragrance-bearing fluid and then withdraw the wand, and then use the cap to touch the tip and wand to the skin to apply the fragrance-bearing fluid where desired. After replacing the wand into the fragrance cartridge through the gasket, and plugging the gasket using the plug and the gasket and their sealing surfaces, and seating the cap, the user can then use the pen clip to safely store the fragrance applicator in a convenient location such as a shirt pocket. When the user desires to use a different fragrance, or the fragrance in the fragrance cartridge is expended, the user can then remove the cap and wand from a filled fragrance cartridge as above, open the pump access by removing the collar from the pump connection, remove the fragrance cartridge into the cartridge cavity, carry out the above process to insert a filled fragrance cartridge, to secure the fragrance cartridge in the fragrance applicator, and replace the fragrance applicator cap and wand as required.
[0021] In an embodiment, a fragrance applicator extending up and down longitudinally includes a pump assembly, an atomizer nozzle, the atomizer nozzle operatively connected to the pump assembly, and a replaceable fragrance cartridge. The applicator includes a cap having a pen clip. A suction tube is operatively connected to the pump assembly, extending therebelow into the fragrance cartridge. There is also a pushing actuator connected to the pump assembly, a barrel connected to the pump assembly, and the barrel encloses the fragrance cartridge. In addition, the fragrance cartridge includes a single connecting end, the connecting end forming the sole outlet thereto. That connecting end includes a threaded connection connected to a threaded connection on the pump assembly. The fragrance cartridge includes a cartridge body, substantially all of that cartridge body extending below the pump assembly. The cartridge body includes an exterior tapered section opposing the connecting end. The pump assembly includes a lower housing that includes an interior cartridge connection cavity, where the threaded connection on the cartridge is threaded to the cartridge connection cavity. That pushing actuator includes an actuator nozzle head, where the pump assembly includes an upper housing, the actuator nozzle head is operatively connected to the upper housing to pump the pump assembly, and cap is removable to expose the actuator nozzle head to pump the pump assembly. That pushing actuator may include the cap, where the pump assembly includes an upper housing, the cap includes an atomizer and a nozzle recess exposing the atomizer to an outer surface of the cap, and the cap is operatively connected to the upper housing to pump the pump assembly. The pump assembly includes a top housing and a lower housing, the lower housing is connected to and fixed longitudinally relative to the barrel, and the suction tube extending downward from the lower housing, the suction tube operatively connected to the pump assembly and extending therebelow into the cartridge cavity. The upper housing may be connected to and fixed longitudinally relative to the cap and axially moveable relative to the barrel, where the cap includes an atomizer. The cap may be removable to expose the actuator nozzle head to pump the pump assembly. The pump assembly may be connected to the barrel proximate to a first end of the barrel, the barrel including a cartridge cavity enclosing the fragrance cartridge, a removable finial at a second end of the barrel, and the removable finial forming a portion of the cartridge cavity. The pump assembly may be connected to the barrel proximate to a first end of the barrel, the barrel including a cartridge cavity enclosing the fragrance cartridge, and a cartridge shoulder adjacent to the first end, the fragrance cartridge including a connecting end, a barrel shoulder adjacent to the connecting end, and the barrel shoulder contacting the cartridge shoulder.
[0022] In an embodiment, a fragrance applicator cartridge includes a cartridge body, a single threaded connection on a connecting end forming a sole fluid connection, a shoulder adjacent to the connection end, and a cartridge cap connected to the threaded connection (including threadedly), where the cartridge cap lacks a fluid outlet. That the cartridge body may contain a fragrance-bearing fluid, may be formed of glass, and may be connected to a fragrance applicator. [0023] In an embodiment, a method of dispensing a fragrance from a fragrance applicator includes pushing a pushing actuator connected to a pump assembly (including pushing a cap having a pen clip), sucking a fragrance-bearing fluid up a suction tube operatively connected to the pump assembly and extending therebelow into the cartridge body of a removable fragrance cartridge, where the fragrance cartridge is enclosed by a barrel connected to the pump assembly, and atomizing the fluid via a nozzle. A first step may be removing the pen clip from the pocket of the user. A further step is first replacing the removable fragrance cartridge, the replacing step include inserting a connecting end of the removable fragrance cartridge into a cartridge cavity in the barrel and contacting a barrel shoulder to a cartridge shoulder, the barrel shoulder on the removable fragrance cartridge adjacent the connecting end, and connecting the connecting end to an interior cartridge connection cavity on the pump assembly. The replacing step also includes first removing a removable finial from the barrel, the removable finial forming a portion of the cartridge cavity, and also reconnecting the removable finial to the barrel to enclose the removable fragrance cartridge in the cartridge cavity. The pushing step may include pushing a cap having a pen clip, with the cap connected to an actuator nozzle head, and include first removing a pen clip from the pocket of the bearer, and removing the cap from the barrel.

Installing also includes contacting a barrel shoulder to a cartridge shoulder, the barrel shoulder on the removable fragrance cartridge adjacent the connecting end, and the cartridge shoulder on the barrel adjacent to a first end of thereof, as well as first removing a removable finial from the barrel, the removable finial forming a portion of the cartridge cavity. The method also includes loading the removable fragrance cartridge into the cartridge cavity through a finial cartridge access in the barrel, and reconnecting the removable finial to the barrel to enclose the removable fragrance cartridge in the cartridge cavity.
[0026] In an embodiment, a fragrance applicator includes a removeable fragrance cartridge that includes a cartridge body, a pump assembly attached to the cartridge body, and a suction tube operatively connected to the pump assembly and extending into the cartridge body. There is also an atomizer nozzle, the atomizer nozzle operatively connected to the pump assembly, a pushing actuator connected to the pump assembly, a barrel connected to the fragrance cartridge pump assembly, the barrel substantially enclosing the fragrance cartridge. Included may be a keying mechanism between the pusher and the actuator nozzle head, with the cap including an upper body of the pusher, a lower body mechanically connected to the barrel, and a compressible section connecting the upper body to the lower body. The fragrance cartridge may be connected to the barrel proximate to a first end of the barrel, the barrel including the cartridge cavity substantially enclosing the fragrance cartridge and a pump access at the first end of the barrel. [0046] Turning first to FIGS. 1A-1F, 2A-2B, &3A-3C, in an embodiment, fragrance applicator 30 includes pushing actuator 33, pump assembly 40, atomizer (nozzle) 66, suction tube 36, and shell 37 having a long axis of rotation.
[0047] Shell 37 includes barrel 70 at a proximal end and cap 60 at a distal end, which may each be generally symmetrical about the axis of rotation (aside from pen clip 61).

Plug 136 is fixed to internal cavity 63 of cap 60, facing proximally and includes proximal sealing surface 139 for sealing with gasket 138 for closing fragrance cartridge 90 when not being used. Plug 136 supports wand 135 extending proximally therefrom past cap 60 to extend into fluid 110 in fragrance cartridge 90. Wand 135 is an elongated shaft having enlarged tip 137 at its proximal end for holding a larger amount of fluid 110 thereon. Fluid 110 may be applied by removing wand 135 from fragrance cartridge 90 with fluid 110 thereon, by using cap 60 as a handle to manipulate wand 135, and using tip 137 to apply fluid 110.

Fragrance cartridge 12 may have cartridge cap 21 to retain fluid 110 therein when not attached to pump assembly 11. In an embodiment, nozzle recess 7 is provided for connecting mist nozzle 6 to the exterior of fragrance applicator 31.
Claims
1. A fragrance applicator for applying a fragrance-bearing fluid, comprising:a shell, the shell comprising a barrel and a cap;wherein the shell is in the form of a pen; andthe barrel comprising a cartridge cavity isolated from the fragrance-bearing fluid.
2. The fragrance applicator of claim 1, further comprising:a delivery system operatively connected to the barrel; andthe delivery system selected from the group consisting of a pump assembly, and a wand assembly.
3. The fragrance applicator of claim 1, further comprising:a removeable fragrance cartridge containing the fragrance-bearing fluid;a delivery system comprising a roller assembly; andthe roller assembly connected to the removeable fragrance cartridge.
4. The fragrance applicator of claim 3,the removeable fragrance cartridge comprising an orifice; andthe roller assembly comprising a roller ball adjacent to the orifice.
5. The fragrance applicator of claim 1, further comprisinga removeable fragrance cartridge containing the fragrance-bearing fluid; anda delivery system comprising a wand assembly;the wand assembly comprising a wand attached to the cap.
6. The fragrance applicator of claim 5,the wand assembly further comprising a gasket attached to the removeable fragrance cartridge; andthe wand extending into the removeable fragrance cartridge.

The fragrance applicator of claim 1, further comprisinga removeable fragrance cartridge containing the fragrance-bearing fluid;a delivery system comprising a pump assembly;the pump assembly attached to the cartridge body; anda suction tube operatively connected to the pump assembly and extending into the cartridge body.
8. The fragrance applicator of claim 7,the delivery system further comprising a pushing actuator;the pushing actuator comprising an atomizer nozzle; andthe atomizer nozzle operatively connected to the pump assembly.
9. The fragrance applicator of claim 1, further comprising:a removeable fragrance cartridge;the barrel operatively connected to the removeable fragrance cartridge;the removeable fragrance cartridge comprising a cartridge body; andthe cartridge body substantially enclosed by the cartridge cavity.
10. The fragrance applicator of claim 9,the cartridge body comprising a connecting end and an exterior tapered section opposing the connecting end;the barrel operatively connected to the removeable fragrance cartridge at the connecting end.
11. The fragrance applicator of claim 1, further comprising:a cap comprising a pen clip.
12. A method of providing a fragrance-bearing fluid to a user, comprising:installing a removeable fragrance cartridge containing a fragrance-bearing fluid into a shell, the shell in the form of a pen and comprising a barrel and a cap;the installing step comprising inserting the removeable fragrance cartridge into a cartridge cavity of the barrel, the cartridge cavity isolated from the fragrance-bearing fluid; andapplying the fragrance-bearing fluid to the user using a delivery system.
13. The method of claim 12, the inserting step comprising:operatively connecting a delivery system to the barrel; andsubstantially enclosing a cartridge body of the removeable fragrance cartridge in the cartridge cavity.
14. The method of claim 12,the installing step further comprising first removing a second removeable fragrance cartridge;the removing step comprising disconnecting a connecting end of the second removeable fragrance cartridge from barrel.
15. The method of claim 13, further comprising:the first removing step further comprising taking a cartridge cap off from a connecting end of the removeable fragrance cartridge before inserting the second removeable fragrance cartridge into the cartridge cavity.
16. The method of claim 12, further comprising:the cap comprising a pen clip; andbefore the applying step, first removing the pen clip from a pocket of the user.
17. The method of claim 12,the delivery system comprising a pump assembly operatively connected to the removeable fragrance cartridge; andthe applying step further comprising:pushing a pushing actuator connected to the pump assembly; andatomizing the fluid via a nozzle.
18. The method of claim 12,the delivery system comprising a roller assembly operatively connected to the removeable fragrance cartridge; andthe applying step further comprising manipulating the shell to roll a roller ball in the roller assembly.
19. The method of claim 12,the delivery system comprising a wand assembly operatively connected to the removeable fragrance cartridge; andthe applying step further comprising manipulating the cap to remove a wand from the removeable fragrance cartridge.
20. A removeable fragrance cartridge, comprising:a cartridge body;the cartridge body comprising a connecting end, a shoulder adjacent to the connecting end, anda cartridge cap removably connected to the connecting end; andthe cartridge cap lacking a fluid outlet as connected to the connecting end.
21. The removeable fragrance cartridge of claim 20the cartridge body further comprising an exterior tapered section extending away from the connecting end.
22. The removeable fragrance cartridge of claim 21the shoulder comprising an angled surface formed by a truncated cone narrowing adjacent to the connecting end.
23. The removeable fragrance cartridge of claim 20, further comprising:a pump assembly permanently axially fixed to the connecting end.
24. The removeable fragrance cartridge of claim 20, further comprising:a roller assembly at the connecting end, the roller assembly comprising an orifice and a roller ball.
25. The removeable fragrance cartridge of claim 20, further comprising:a gasket on the connecting end, the gasket configured to accept a wand for applying a fragrance-bearing fluid.
