Abstract
Description
Adhesive sheet, protective member and display panel
[0001] The present disclosure relates to an adhesive sheet, a protective member, and a display panel.
[0002] Conventionally, a flexible printed circuit board (hereinafter also referred to as a "flexible board" or "FPC") is connected to a surface-emitting panel such as an organic light-emitting diode (OLED), and an integrated circuit (IC) driver (hereinafter also referred to as an "integrated circuit unit") is sometimes disposed on the FPC. In this case, a protective cover that covers the IC driver may be disposed on the FPC for the purpose of externally protecting the IC driver. The protective cover is configured to cover, for example, the IC driver. An adhesive layer is formed on the bottom surface of the protective cover, and such a protective cover is adhered and fixed to the FPC with an adhesive (see, for example, Patent Document 1).
[0003] Japanese Patent Application Publication No. 2003-229517
[0004] In order to prevent the protective cover from interfering with the IC driver, the protective cover is sometimes attached to the FPC after alignment. However, if a strong adhesive is used for the protective cover, if the adhesive layer comes into contact with the FPC over a certain area during the alignment stage of the protective cover, it becomes difficult to peel the protective cover off the FPC and reattach it. Thus, in the past, when bonding objects that require alignment, there has been room for improvement in terms of achieving both adhesion with sufficient adhesive strength and alignment.
[0005] An object of one aspect of the present disclosure is to provide a technology that can exhibit sufficient adhesive strength and easily align objects to be bonded.
[0006] In order to solve the above problems, an adhesive sheet according to one embodiment of the present disclosure has an elastic layer having elasticity and an adhesive portion, the elastic layer having a first main surface and a second main surface located opposite the first main surface, the first main surface having a recess that accommodates the adhesive portion, and the second main surface having a communicating portion that communicates with the internal space of the recess.
[0007] In order to solve the above problems, a protective member according to one embodiment of the present disclosure is a protective member that is adhered onto a flexible substrate, and the protective member has an elastic layer having elasticity and an adhesive portion on an adhesive surface with the substrate, the elastic layer has a first main surface and a second main surface located opposite the first main surface, the first main surface has a recess that accommodates the adhesive portion, and the second main surface has a communication portion that communicates with the internal space of the recess.
[0008] In order to solve the above problem, a display panel according to one embodiment of the present disclosure comprises a surface-emitting panel capable of displaying images by surface emission, a flexible substrate connected to the wiring of the surface-emitting panel, an integrated circuit portion disposed on the flexible substrate, and a protective member adhered to the periphery of the integrated circuit portion on the flexible substrate to protect the integrated circuit portion, wherein the protective member is the protective member described above in the present disclosure.
[0009] According to one aspect of the present disclosure, it is possible to provide a technology that can exhibit sufficient adhesive strength and easily align objects to be bonded.
[0010] Fig. 1 is a diagram schematically showing the configuration of a display panel according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. Fig. 2 is a perspective view schematically showing a protective member according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view schematically showing the configuration of an adhesive sheet according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. Fig. 4 is a diagram for explaining the state of adhesion by an adhesive sheet according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view schematically showing the configuration of an adhesive sheet according to another embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0011] An embodiment of the present disclosure will be described in detail below.
[0012] 1 is a diagram schematically illustrating the configuration of a display panel according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 1, the display panel 10 includes a first flexible substrate 11, a surface-emitting panel 12, an integrated circuit unit 13, a second flexible substrate 14, and a protective member 20.
[0013] The first flexible substrate 11 is a flexible sheet-like substrate having flexibility and has an elongated rectangular shape in a plan view. A surface-emitting panel 12 is disposed on one end of one main surface of the first flexible substrate 11, and an integrated circuit section 13 and a protective member 20 are disposed on the other end of the other main surface. In this manner, the first flexible substrate 11 is a flexible substrate connected to the wiring of the surface-emitting panel 12. Note that FIG. 1 schematically shows the configuration of the display panel 10 as viewed from the other main surface of the first flexible substrate 11. A second flexible substrate 14 is connected to the other end of the first flexible substrate 11.
[0014] The surface-emitting panel 12 is a panel capable of displaying an image by surface emission. The surface-emitting panel 12 may be an organic EL panel or a liquid crystal panel, and is an OLED panel in this embodiment.
[0015] The integrated circuit unit 13 is disposed on the first flexible substrate 11 and constitutes part of the wiring of the surface-emitting panel 12. When viewed in plan, the integrated circuit unit 13 has an elongated rectangular shape. The integrated circuit unit 13 is constructed by sealing electronic components such as transistors that constitute specific circuits with a resin material. The resin material contains carbon, which gives the integrated circuit unit 13 sufficient hardness but also brittleness.
[0016] The second flexible substrate 14 is a flexible sheet-like substrate that has the same flexibility as the first flexible substrate 11, and is electrically connected to the first flexible substrate 11. The second flexible substrate 14 is a circuit board for connecting the wiring of the surface-emitting panel 12 to external wiring.
[0017] [Protective Member] The protective member 20 is a member that is adhered to the periphery of the integrated circuit portion 13 on the first flexible substrate 11 to protect the integrated circuit portion. Fig. 2 is a perspective view that schematically shows the protective member 20. As shown in Fig. 2, the protective member 20 is adhered to the first flexible substrate 11 via an adhesive sheet 30, and has a protective frame 21 and a protective sheet 22.
[0018] The protective frame 21 forms a wall portion that rises from the periphery of the integrated circuit unit 13 on the first flexible substrate 11. More specifically, the protective frame 21 is a metal member, and its shape in plan view is a substantially U-shape consisting of both short sides and one long side between them of a rectangle that is larger than the integrated circuit unit 13. The height of the protective frame 21 is also higher than the integrated circuit unit 13. In this way, the protective frame 21 has a height that exceeds the integrated circuit unit 13 and surrounds the integrated circuit unit 13 on three sides.
[0019] In this specification, the term "periphery" refers to all or part of a portion surrounding a certain reference position. In other words, the "periphery" may refer to a portion lacking a portion of the entire periphery, such as three sides of a larger rectangle surrounding the rectangle as described above.
[0020] The protective sheet 22 covers the upper part of the protective frame 21. For example, the protective sheet 22 is a plate-shaped member made of transparent resin. The protective sheet 22 is adhered to the upper end surface of the protective frame 21.
[0021] [Adhesive Sheet] The adhesive surface between the protective member 20 and the first flexible substrate 11 is formed by the adhesive sheet 30. That is, the adhesive sheet 30 is formed on the bottom surface of the protective frame 21, and the protective frame 21 is adhered to the first flexible substrate 11 via the adhesive sheet 30.
[0022] 3 is a cross-sectional view that schematically shows the configuration of the bonding sheet 30. As shown in FIG. 3, the bonding sheet 30 has an elastic layer 31 and an adhesive portion 32.
[0023] The elastic layer 31 is made of an elastic material, such as a resin material that has bubbles and exhibits elasticity, such as foamed polyurethane.
[0024] In the thickness direction, the elastic layer 31 has a first main surface 311 on the protective frame 21 side and a second main surface 312 on the first flexible substrate 11 side. In this way, the elastic layer 31 has the first main surface 311 and the second main surface 312 located on the opposite side of the first main surface 311. The elastic layer 31 also has recesses 33 formed by parallel recesses on the first main surface 311 side.
[0025] The cross section of the recess 33 is V-shaped. In this manner, the recess 33 has a shape that gradually narrows toward the second main surface 312 in the thickness direction of the elastic layer 31.
[0026] The elastic layer 31 further has a slit 34. The slit 34 is formed to correspond to the recess 33. The slit 34 opens to the bottom of the recess 33 and the second main surface 312, and connects the internal space of the recess 33 to the external space on the second main surface 312 side. The slit 34 corresponds to a communicating portion that connects with the internal space of the recess 33. In this embodiment, the communicating portion is the slit 34 that extends from the second main surface 312 to the recess 33.
[0027] The recesses 33 and slits 34 are aligned in parallel in the direction in which each side of the protective frame 21 extends. That is, on the short sides of the protective frame 21, the recesses 33 and slits 34 extend in a direction perpendicular to the short sides (a direction along the long sides of the protective frame 21). On the long sides of the protective frame 21, the recesses 33 and slits 34 extend in a direction perpendicular to the long sides (a direction along the short sides of the protective frame 21). In this way, in this embodiment, the recesses 33 and slits 34 are aligned in at least one direction when the adhesive sheet 30 is viewed in a plan view.
[0028] The adhesive portion 32 has fluidity and is accommodated in the recess 33. Although the adhesive portion 32 is accommodated in the recess 33, it is usually viscous and the slit 34 is sufficiently narrow so that it does not flow down through the slit 34 under its own weight. A known adhesive may be used for the adhesive portion 32. In the bonding sheet 30, the adhesive portion 32 fills the internal space formed when the recess 33 is closed by the bottom surface of the protective frame 21, and the elastic layer 31 is adhered to the protective frame 21 via the adhesive portion 32. In this way, the first main surface 311 has the recess 33 that accommodates the adhesive portion 32, and the second main surface 312 has a communication portion that communicates with the internal space of the recess 33.
[0029] [Manufacturing Method] The adhesive sheet 30 can be manufactured by, for example, the following method. First, a material for the elastic layer 31 is applied to a sheet that has releasability relative to the elastic layer 31. Next, the elastic layer 31 is formed. The elastic layer 31 can be formed, for example, by foam molding the material. Next, the surface of the elastic layer 31 is scraped away with a comb-shaped (or zigzag) blade that corresponds to the recesses 33, forming a plurality of recesses 33 arranged in one direction. Next, a cut is made in the bottom of each recess 33 to form a slit 34. Next, the adhesive portion 32 is placed in the recess 33 to prepare the adhesive sheet 30. Next, the protective frame 21 is pressed against the adhesive portion 32 side to adhere it to the adhesive portion 32. Next, the adhesive sheet 30 is cut along each side of the protective frame 21, together with the release sheet, and the release sheet is peeled off from the elastic layer 31. In this way, the adhesive sheet 30 is formed on the bottom surface of the protective frame 21.
[0030] [Bonding Method] FIG. 4 is a diagram illustrating bonding using the adhesive sheet 30. From the left side of the page, FIG. 4 shows the first to fourth states of the bonding process, and schematically illustrates a cross section of the display panel 10 and the bottom surface (adhesive surface) of the adhesive sheet 30 in each state. In manufacturing the display panel 10, the protective member 20 is bonded after the position of the integrated circuit unit 13 on the first flexible substrate 11 is determined. Although not shown, other electronic components or wiring exist around the integrated circuit unit 13. The bonding position of the protective member 20 is typically designed to minimize clearance with surrounding elements. Therefore, precise alignment is typically required for bonding the protective member 20.
[0031] In the first state, the protective member 20 is temporarily placed on the first flexible substrate 11. In the first state, the adhesive portions 32 are present in the slits 34, but the opening area of the slits 34 on the bottom surface of the adhesive sheet 30 is sufficiently small compared to the area of the elastic layer 31. Therefore, even if the adhesive portions 32 are exposed from the slits 34, the adhesive force is sufficiently weak, and the protective frame 21 can be easily peeled off from the first flexible substrate 11, and the position of the protective frame 21 can be easily adjusted. Note that, in aligning the protective member 20, the position of the protective frame 21 can be easily and precisely adjusted because the protective sheet 22 is transparent.
[0032] In the second state, the protective member 20 is pressed by a force F1 while positioned at a desired position. As a result, the elastic layer 31 contracts in the thickness direction in accordance with the magnitude of the force F1, applying pressure to the adhesive portions 32, which press against the slits 34, slightly widening the slits 34. The adhesive portions 32 exposed through the widened slits 34 come into contact with the first flexible substrate 11, thereby bonding the protective frame 21 to the first flexible substrate 11 via the adhesive portions 32. Thus, the elastic layer 31 has slits 34, and the elastic layer 31 contracts when pressure is applied to the adhesive sheet 30, causing the tips of the adhesive portions 32 to expand beyond the slits 34 onto the adhesive surface. The elastic layer 31 also contracts in the thickness direction of the adhesive sheet 30. In this manner, the adhesive sheet 30 is bonded to the first flexible substrate 11.
[0033] When the force F1 is small, as shown in the figure, even in the second state, the opening area of the slit 34 on the bottom surface of the bonding sheet 30 is smaller than the area of the elastic layer 31. Therefore, the protective member 20 is adhered to the slit 34 by the adhesive portion 32 that flows out from the slit 34, but the original adhesive strength is such that the protective member 20 can still be easily peeled off from the first flexible substrate 11. In this way, the protective member 20 is temporarily fixed to the first flexible substrate 11.
[0034] In the third state, the protective member 20, whose bonding position has been determined, is pressed with a force F2 that is greater than the force F1. As a result, the adhesive portion 32 presses the elastic layer 31 more strongly, widening the slit 34. Therefore, the opening area of the slit 34 on the bottom surface of the bonding sheet 30 becomes larger, the contact area of the adhesive portion 32 with the first flexible substrate 11 becomes larger, and the adhesive force of the adhesive portion 32 becomes stronger.
[0035] In the fourth state, elastic layer 31 contracts due to the pressure of adhesive portion 32 and collapses due to the pressure of force F2, maximizing the contact area of adhesive portion 32 with first flexible substrate 11 and minimizing the contact area of elastic layer 31 with first flexible substrate 11. In the fourth state, the contact area of adhesive portion 32 is sufficiently large, and sufficient adhesive force is exerted to attach protective member 20 to first flexible substrate 11. In this way, protective member 20 is attached to first flexible substrate 11 accurately at the desired position.
[0036] [Major Effects] As described above, the bonding sheet 30 includes an elastic layer 31 and adhesive portions 32. The elastic layer 31 includes recesses 33 that accommodate the adhesive portions 32 and slits 34 that correspond to the recesses 33 and connect the recesses 33 to the outside. The adhesive portions 32 and the elastic layer 31 are made of different materials and are formed in a comb-like shape. A two-layer structure is constructed in which the adhesive portions 32 and the elastic layer 31 are stacked with their apexes facing each other and offset in the parallel direction. The bottom surface of the comb-like shape of the adhesive portions 32 is positioned on the side of the member to be bonded (protective frame 21), and the apexes of the comb-like shape of the adhesive portions 32 are positioned on the side of the member to be bonded (first flexible substrate 11, hereinafter also referred to as "work"). Conversely, the bottom surface of the comb-like shape of the elastic layer 31 is positioned on the side of the member to be bonded, and the apexes are positioned on the side of the member to be bonded.
[0037] As a result, the slits 34 expand to a size corresponding to the pressing force on the bonding sheet 30, and the adhesive portions 32 are exposed through the slits 34. In the bonding sheet 30, the area where the adhesive portions 32 contact the workpiece is smaller at the apex of the comb-tooth shape of the adhesive portions 32, making it easy to align the components to be bonded without exerting excessively strong adhesive force. Furthermore, because the elastic layer 31 is elastic, applying pressure after alignment is complete further compresses the elastic layer 31, bringing the adhesive portions 32 into further contact with the workpiece, thereby completing adhesion and fixation by the adhesive portions 32. In this way, the adhesive strength of the adhesive portions 32 in the bonding sheet 30 can be adjusted, making it possible to align the bonding position of the bonding sheet 30 while maintaining the adhesive strength of the adhesive portions 32.
[0038] Furthermore, the elastic layer 31 has air bubbles like urethane foam, so the elastic layer 31 is likely to shrink due to the pressure of the adhesive sheet 30 and the resulting pressure from the adhesive portion 32. The adhesive strength of the adhesive sheet 30 is further increased by the elastic layer 31 having air bubbles in this way.
[0039] Furthermore, the recess 33 has a V-shaped cross section, and the opening of the slit 34 gradually widens as the pressing force on the bonding sheet 30 increases. In this way, since the recess 33 has a shape that gradually narrows toward the second main surface 312 in the thickness direction of the elastic layer 31, it is possible to increase the widening of the opening of the slit 34 due to pressing on the bonding sheet 30 and the exposed amount of the adhesive portion 32 proportionally depending on the strength of the pressing force. Therefore, it is suitable for adjusting the adhesive strength depending on the pressing force.
[0040] Furthermore, the slits 34 extend from the second main surface 312 to the recesses 33. In this way, the recesses 33 are connected to the outside by the slits 34, so the adhesive portions 32 are less likely to come into contact with air before the bonding sheet 30 is pressed. Therefore, a configuration having such slits 34 is suitable for preventing the adhesive portions 32 from drying out.
[0041] Furthermore, when the adhesive sheet 30 is viewed in a plane, the slits 34 are arranged in parallel on each side of the protective frame 21 in a direction along each side. In this way, the slits 34 are arranged regularly and intermittently on each side of the protective frame 21. Therefore, when the adhesive sheet 30 is pressed, the adhesive portions 32 are exposed from the slits 34 so as to be scattered all over each side of the protective frame 21 in a plane view. This is therefore suitable for making the adhesive strength of the adhesive portions 32 uniform.
[0042] The slits 34 are formed in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction (direction along each side) of each side of the protective frame 21. That is, the length of each slit 34 is equal to the width of each side of the protective frame 21. As such, the slits 34 are short. Therefore, air bubbles can easily escape through the slits 34 during bonding, and air bubbles are likely to be prevented from remaining in the center of the slits 34 in the longitudinal direction.
[0043] Furthermore, the adhesive surface of the protective member 20 is formed by such an adhesive sheet 30. Therefore, by adjusting the pressing force on the adhesive sheet 30, it is possible to adjust the adhesive strength of the protective member 20. Therefore, when precise positioning is required in adhering the protective member 20, it is possible to temporarily fix the protective member 20 by adhesion with a strength appropriate for peeling the protective member 20 from the first flexible substrate 11, depending on the flexibility or strength of the first flexible substrate 11. In this way, the protective member 20 that is adhered onto a flexible substrate while requiring precise alignment is one preferred aspect of the present disclosure.
[0044] The protective member 20 has a protective frame 21 that forms walls rising from three sides, i.e., one long side and two short sides of the rectangle, of the first flexible substrate 11, and a protective sheet 22 that covers the upper part of the protective frame 21. The protective frame 21 restricts deformation of the first flexible substrate 11 in the bending direction, and the protective sheet 22 prevents contact with the inside of the protective frame 21. Therefore, it is suitable for preventing peeling, cracking, or chipping of the integrated circuit part 13 bonded to the flexible first flexible substrate 11.
[0045] The protective sheet 22 is transparent, so that the inside of the protective member 20 can be observed when adhering the protective member 20, enabling precise alignment.
[0046] As described above, the display panel 10 includes the surface-emitting panel 12, the first flexible substrate 11, the integrated circuit unit 13, and the protective member 20. Therefore, the protective member 20 can be precisely and easily aligned in accordance with the position of the integrated circuit unit 13, which further reduces the occurrence of defective display panels 10 due to alignment of the protective member 20, and further increases the yield of the display panels 10.
[0047] [Other Embodiments] In the above-described embodiment, the bonding sheet 30 is placed directly on the surface of the workpiece, but the bonding sheet according to the present disclosure is not limited to this. Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view schematically illustrating the configuration of a bonding sheet according to another embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown in Fig. 5, the bonding sheet 40 has the same configuration as the above-described bonding sheet 30, except that it further includes base sheets 41 and 42. The base sheet 41 is arranged so as to cover the adhesive portion 32 on the first main surface 311 side, and the base sheet 42 is arranged so as to cover the elastic layer 31 on the second main surface 312 side. Both the base sheets 41 and 42 are sheets that have releasability relative to the adhesive portion 32 and the elastic layer 31, and are, for example, silicone sheets, fluororesin sheets, or laminate sheets of a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) sheet and a silicone layer or a fluororesin layer.
[0048] When using the adhesive sheet 40, first peel off the base sheet 41, and press the exposed adhesive portion 32 against the bottom surface of the workpiece (protective frame 21) to adhere the adhesive sheet 40 to the workpiece. Next, peel off the base sheet 42, and abut the exposed elastic layer 31 at an appropriate position on the member to be adhered (first flexible substrate 11). Thereafter, the adhesive sheet 40 is used to position and adhere the workpiece in the same manner as in the previously described embodiment.
[0049] The bonding sheet 40 may be in a sheet or tape form. The sheet-like bonding sheet 40 can be used by cutting it into the shape of the workpiece, for example. The tape-like bonding sheet 40 can be suitably distributed in a state of being wound around a core, and can be used by cutting it to fit the length of the workpiece.
[0050] In the case where the base sheet has releasability for the adhesive portion 32 on both sides thereof, the adhesive sheet 40 may have only one of the base sheet 41 and the base sheet 42. Even in this case, the adhesive sheet 40 can be stored in a state where it is wound around a core and used as described above. The adhesive sheet 40 is suitable from the viewpoint of increasing versatility in positioning and adhering workpieces.
[0051] Furthermore, in the adhesive sheet according to the present disclosure, the slits 34 may extend along each side of the protective frame 21. This configuration is preferable from the viewpoint of increasing adhesive strength, since the adhesive portions 32 are continuously adhered to each side of the protective frame 21.
[0052] Alternatively, the slits 34 may extend along a direction that diagonally intersects with each side of the protective frame 21. In this configuration, when an adhesive sheet is placed on a portion that extends in two directions, such as the long side portion and the short side portion of the protective frame 21, adhesive portions 32 and slits 34 can be placed in a uniformly diagonal direction with respect to both side portions. Therefore, this is preferable from the viewpoint of more easily preparing an adhesive sheet having equally spaced slits for a workpiece having a shape with two directions.
[0053] Alternatively, each recess in the elastic layer may form a cone-shaped space. This configuration is preferable from the viewpoint of causing the adhesive portion to flow toward the slit when the bonding sheet is pressed.
[0054] Although the above embodiment describes the adhesive portion 32 that bonds by pressure and contact, in the present disclosure, adhesives that require additional processing may also be used as the adhesive portion, depending on the conditions of the workpiece. For example, the adhesive portion may be made of a known adhesive that develops adhesive strength upon heating or irradiation with active energy rays (such as ultraviolet rays). Furthermore, in addition to the adhesive components described above, the adhesive portion may further contain additives such as fillers to develop appropriate fluidity.
[0055] The adhesive sheet according to the present disclosure can be applied to the bonding of workpieces that require precise alignment, and can be applied to the bonding of various members other than the flexible substrate and protective member in the above-described embodiment.
[0056] [Summary] According to the above configuration, it is possible to easily and precisely position the bonding position when bonding components. The technology of the present disclosure, which has such effects, is advantageous for improving the yield of products that require bonding, and is expected to contribute to achieving, for example, Goal 12 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) advocated by the United Nations, "Responsible Consumption and Production."
[0057] The present disclosure is not limited to the above-described embodiments, and various modifications are possible within the scope of the claims. Embodiments obtained by appropriately combining the technical means disclosed in different embodiments are also included in the technical scope of the present disclosure. Furthermore, new technical features can be formed by combining the technologies disclosed in each embodiment.
