Description

Electronic devices including waterproof structures

[0001] Various embodiments disclosed in this document relate to electronic devices, and more particularly, to electronic devices including a waterproof structure.

[0002] Electronic devices include circuit boards, which provide space for electrical components and circuit wiring for electrical connections. As the functionality of electronic devices improves, the number of components required to be integrated onto circuit boards may increase. Furthermore, efficient use of circuit board space is necessary to miniaturize and reduce the weight of electronic devices.

[0003] An electronic device may have a metal housing. The metal housing provides a grounding path for the electronic device and may be used as an antenna to enhance the wireless communication performance of the electronic device.

[0004] To prevent malfunctions and enhance usability, the number of electronic devices offering waterproofing is increasing. The display of an electronic device is exposed on the front surface of the device and is therefore vulnerable to moisture, requiring advanced waterproofing measures. Waterproofing of a display can be achieved, for example, by injecting a liquid waterproofing agent between the display and the housing, which is then cured.

[0005] As electronic devices perform wireless communication over a variety of frequencies, there is a need for increased ground current and reduced ground resistance in the circuit boards on which the wireless communication circuits are placed. However, this increase in ground current and reduction in ground resistance requires an increase in the area of the ground circuit, which may increase the internal space occupied by the circuit board in the electronic device. Furthermore, the increased area of the circuit board may lead to a shortage of space for placement of various internal components, such as vibration drive motors, magnets, and / or sensors in the electronic device. A waterproofing agent inlet is required to inject a liquid waterproofing agent for waterproofing, but this waterproofing agent inlet may reduce the efficiency of utilization of the internal space of the electronic device.

[0006] The various embodiments disclosed in this document can provide an electronic device with improved efficiency in utilizing internal space and improved wireless communication performance.

For example, the second display module (25) may be positioned or coupled to the first inner support (481) and may be supported by the first inner support (481) and positioned in the light-transmitting area (or opening) of the first cover (213). In various embodiments, the second display module (25) may be coupled to the first cover (213).

[0164] According to one embodiment, at least a portion of the conductive portions included in the first frame (211) may be utilized as at least a portion of an antenna radiator (or radiating portion). For example, at least a portion of the conductive portions included in the first side region (412) may operate as at least a portion of an antenna radiator (or radiating portion) that transmits (or radiates) an electromagnetic signal (or electromagnetic wave) to the outside or receives an electromagnetic signal from the outside.

[0165] According to one embodiment, at least a portion of the conductive portions included in the second frame (221) may be utilized as at least a portion of an antenna radiator (or radiating portion). For example, at least a portion of the conductive portions included in the second side region (422) may operate as at least a portion of an antenna radiator (or radiating portion) that transmits (or radiates) an electromagnetic signal (or electromagnetic wave) to the outside or receives an electromagnetic signal from the outside.

[0166] According to one embodiment, the first display module (24) may include a flexible display (240), a display driving circuit (2401), an extension (2402), and / or a first flexible printed circuit board (2403).

[0167] According to one embodiment, the flexible display (240) can provide a first area (A1), a second area (A2), and a third area (A3).

[0168] According to one embodiment, the display driver circuit (2401) may serve as a signal path between the flexible display (240) and a processor (e.g., the processor (120) of FIG. 1) disposed on the first printed circuit board (451). The timing controller may convert a data signal input from a processor (e.g., the processor (120) of FIG. 1) into a signal required by the DDI. The timing controller may adjust the input data information into signals suitable for a gate driver (or gate IC) and a source driver (or source IC) of the DDI. The graphic RAM may serve as a memory that temporarily stores data input to the driver (or IC) of the DDI. The graphic RAM may store the input signal and output it back to the driver of the DDI, and at this time, may interact with the timing controller to process the signal. The power driving unit can generate voltage for driving the flexible display (240) and provide the voltage required for the gate driver and source driver of the DDI.

[0170] According to one embodiment, the display driving circuit (2401) may be positioned between the second area (A2) of the flexible display (240) and the second support (421) of the second frame (221). The display driving circuit (2401) may be disposed in the flexible display (240) in, for example, a chip on panel (COP) manner or a chip on film (COF) manner.

[0171] According to one embodiment, the extension (2402) may extend from the flexible display (240). The extension (2402) may include electrical paths (e.g., wires implemented as conductive patterns) that electrically connect a plurality of TFTs included in the flexible display (240) and the first flexible printed circuit board (2403). The extension (2402) may not include pixels as it is a portion not included in the display area.

[0172] According to one embodiment, the extension (2402) may extend from a display panel included in the flexible display (240), and the display driving circuit (2401) may be disposed in the extension (2402) (e.g., COP method).

[0173] According to one embodiment, the extension portion (2402) may extend from the second area (A2) of the flexible display (240). An adhesive material or an bonding material may be disposed between the fourth area (A4) of the extension portion (2402) and the second area (A2) of the flexible display (240). The extension portion (2402) may include a bent area (B) that extends and bends from the second area (A2) of the flexible display (240) to the fourth area (A4). The display driving circuit (2401) may be disposed in the fourth area (A4) of the extension portion (2402). In one embodiment, the display driver circuit (2401) may be placed in the fourth area (A4) of the extension (2402) via tape automated bonding (TAB).

[0174] According to one embodiment, one end of the first flexible printed circuit board (2403) may be electrically connected to the extension portion (2402). The extension portion (2402) and the first flexible printed circuit board (2403) may be connected, for example, by anisotropic conductive film bonding (ACF bonding). The ACF may be an anisotropic conductive film formed by mixing fine conductive particles (e.g., nickel, carbon, or solder balls) with an adhesive resin (or adhesive resin) (e.g., thermosetting resin) to form a film that conducts electricity in only one direction. When the ACF is placed between the extension portion (2402) and the first flexible printed circuit board (2403) and then compressed by applying heat and pressure, a conductive pattern (not shown) provided (or formed) on the extension portion (2402) can be electrically connected to a conductive pattern formed (or provided) on the first flexible printed circuit board (2403) through conductive particles, and an adhesive resin (or adhesive resin) can bond the extension portion (2402) and the first flexible printed circuit board (2403). The other end of the first flexible printed circuit board (2403) can include a connector (2403a) (e.g., an FPCB connector). The first flexible printed circuit board (2403) can pass through an opening (not shown) provided in the second support portion (221) of the second frame (221). The connector (2403a) of the first flexible printed circuit board (2403) can be electrically connected to the second printed circuit board (452) disposed in the fourth support area (421B) of the second support portion (221). The flexible display (240) can be electrically connected to the first printed circuit board (451) disposed in the first frame (211) through the extension portion (2402), the first flexible printed circuit board (2403), and the second flexible printed circuit board (471).A signal commanded from a processor (e.g., processor (120) of FIG. 1) disposed on a first printed circuit board (451) can be transmitted to a display driving circuit (2401) through a first flexible printed circuit board (2403).

[0175] According to various embodiments, the extension (2402) may be a separate flexible film substrate (e.g., COF method) that electrically connects the display panel included in the flexible display (240) and the first flexible printed circuit board (2403).

[0176] According to various embodiments, the display driving circuit (2401) may be disposed on a first flexible printed circuit board (2403).

[0177] According to various embodiments, a touch sensor integrated circuit (IC) (not shown) electrically connected to a touch detection circuit included in the flexible display (240) may be further disposed on the first flexible printed circuit board (2403). For example, the display driver circuit (2401) may include a touch display driver IC (TDDI).

[0179] FIG. 5b is a perspective view of an electronic device (500) according to various embodiments.

[0180] FIG. 5c is a cross-sectional view of an electronic device (500) according to various embodiments.

[0181] FIG. 5d is a cross-sectional view of a frame (511) of an electronic device (500) according to various embodiments.

[0182] FIG. 5e is a plan view of a frame (511) of an electronic device (500) according to various embodiments.

[0183] Figures 5a and 5b are enlarged views of part A of Figure 3.

[0184] Figure 5c is a cross-sectional view along the CC direction of Figure 5a.

[0185] Figure 5d is a cross-sectional view along the DD direction of Figure 5e.

[0186] Referring to FIGS. 5A to 5C , an electronic device (500) (e.g., the electronic device (101) of FIG. 1 , the electronic device (2) of FIGS. 2 to 4 ) may include a housing (510) (e.g., the first housing (21) or the second housing (22) of FIGS. 2 to 4 ) and a substrate (530). In various embodiments, the housing (510) may include a front plate (514) (e.g., a display protection member or a display cover), a rear plate (515) (e.g., the first cover (213) or the second cover (223) of FIGS. 2 to 4 ), and a frame (511) (e.g., the first frame (211) or the second frame (221) of FIGS. 2 to 4 ), and may include an internal space surrounded by the front plate (514), the rear plate (515), and the frame (511). The front plate (514) and the back plate (515) are arranged to face each other and can be coupled to the frame (511) in a first direction (e.g., z-direction) and a second direction (e.g., -z-direction) opposite to the first direction. In various embodiments, the display (501) of the electronic device (500) is positioned on the inner side of the front plate (514), and the frame (511) can be coupled with the display (501) and the front plate (514). In some embodiments, the electronic device (500) does not include a separate front plate (514), and the frame (511) can be coupled with the display (501) positioned in the first direction. The frame (511) can be a member that protects the side surfaces (e.g., x-axis and y-axis directions) of the electronic device (500) and supports components such as the substrate (530) inside the electronic device (500).

[0187] In various embodiments, the electronic device (500) may include a waterproof member (502). The waterproof member (502) may prevent moisture and foreign substances from entering between the front plate (514) and the frame (511) and may prevent moisture from entering the display (501). In various embodiments, the waterproof member (502) may be a waterproof gasket (e.g., a cure-in-place gasket (CIPG)) formed by injecting and curing a liquid resin into an area requiring waterproofing treatment.

[0188] In various embodiments, the frame (511) may include a waterproof member injection port (520). The waterproof member injection port (520) may be an injection port formed to allow liquid resin to be injected to form a waterproof member (502) during the manufacturing of the electronic device (500). The detailed shape of the waterproof member injection port (520) will be described later.

[0189] The substrate portion (530) may be located in the internal space of the housing (510) and may be a portion in which a circuit is formed so that various electrical components of the electronic device (500) (e.g., the processor (120), memory (130), and / or communication module (190) of FIG. 1) are arranged and electrically connected. The substrate portion (530) may include one or more printed circuit boards.

[0190] In various embodiments, the substrate (530) may include an RF circuit (531) (e.g., a wireless communication module (192) or an antenna module (197) of FIG. 1). The RF circuit (531) may be a circuit configured to transmit / receive and process RF (radio frequency) signals for wireless communication of the electronic device (500).

[0191] In various embodiments, the substrate portion (530) may include a substrate extension portion (533). The substrate extension portion (533) may be a portion of the substrate portion (530) that extends toward the frame (511). In various embodiments, the RF circuit (531) may be positioned adjacent to the substrate extension portion (533), and the substrate extension portion (533) may include a ground circuit (532) formed to ground the RF circuit (531).

[0192] In various embodiments, the frame (511) may include at least one metal frame (512). The metal frame (512) may act as a radiating element for the RF circuit (531) of the substrate (530). For example, an antenna may be formed on at least a portion of the metal frame (512). Additionally, the metal frame (512) may provide a ground for the substrate (530). For example, the frame (511) may include a plurality of metal frames (512) and at least one segment (513). The segment (513) may include an insulating material (e.g., a polymer and / or a fiber-reinforced polymer) to couple the plurality of metal frames (512) together while insulating them from each other. In various embodiments, the metal frame (512) may include a feed hole formed to transmit an RF signal from the RF circuit (531). In various embodiments, the waterproofing member inlet (520) may be a part of the metal frame (512).

[0193] Referring to FIGS. 5C to 5E, in various embodiments, the waterproofing member injection port (520) of the frame (511) may include an opening (522) open in a second direction (e.g., -z direction) and a side wall (523) arranged along the outer periphery of the opening (522). The side wall (523) may be a portion to prevent the liquid resin injected for waterproofing from overflowing until it hardens.

[0194] In various embodiments, a mounting surface (521) may be formed on an upper portion of the side wall (523) (e.g., a -z-direction surface of the side wall (523)). The mounting surface (521) may be a portion formed in the waterproof member inlet (520) so that various components inside the electronic device (500) may be mounted thereon. For example, the substrate extension portion (533) may extend to the waterproof member inlet (520), and the substrate extension portion (533) may be mounted on the mounting surface (521). In other embodiments, other components of the electronic device (500), such as a magnet (e.g., a magnet that assists a folding operation of the foldable electronic device (500), may extend onto the mounting surface (521). The height of the mounting surface (521) may be substantially the same as the height of a component (e.g., the substrate extension portion (533)) mounted on the mounting surface (521). In some embodiments, the mounting surface (521) may be formed on the entire upper surface of the side wall (523). In other embodiments, the mounting surface (521) may be formed on a portion of the upper surface of the side wall (523). This will be described later.

[0195] In various embodiments, the substrate extension (533) may be fastened to the waterproofing member inlet (520). The substrate extension (533) may be fastened to the mounting surface (521) by a fastening member (or joining member) (538), such as a screw, a rivet, and / or a retaining clip. In some embodiments, the substrate extension (533) may include a through hole (534) formed to allow the fastening member (538) to pass therethrough. A fastening groove (526) may be formed in the waterproofing member inlet (520) (e.g., the mounting surface (521)). The fastening groove (526) may include, for example, a screw hole.

[0196] In various embodiments, the substrate extension portion (533) may include a ground pad (535) formed around the through hole (534). The ground pad (535) may be a portion connected to a ground circuit (532) to provide grounding to the substrate portion (530) (e.g., RF circuit (531)). In various embodiments, the ground pad (535) may be grounded to the metal frame (512) via a fastening member (538). For example, the fastening member (538) (e.g., a screw) may be in direct or indirect electrical contact with the ground pad (535), and the fastening member (538) may be fastened to a fastening groove (526) formed in the waterproofing member injection port (520), thereby electrically connecting the ground pad (535) to the metal frame (512). Since the RF circuit (531) is grounded to the metal frame (512) through the ground pad (535) of the substrate extension (533) and the mounting surface (521) of the waterproof member injection port (520), the contact resistance of the ground line is reduced, so that the radiation efficiency of the RF circuit (531) can be improved.

[0197] In various embodiments, the electronic device (500) may include a ground washer (539) positioned between the fastening member (538) and the ground pad (535). The ground washer (539) may electrically connect the ground pad (535) and the fastening member (538), while reducing damage to the ground pad (535) due to friction resulting from fastening of the fastening member (538).

[0198] In various embodiments, a step portion (527) may be formed in the waterproof member injection port (520). The waterproof member injection port (520) may include a first portion (528) that is relatively high in height (e.g., a length extending in the -z direction) with the step portion (527) as the center, and a second portion (529) that is relatively low. In various embodiments, a mounting surface (521) may be formed on an upper surface (e.g., a surface in the -z direction) of the second portion (529).

[0199] When manufacturing an electronic device (500), a display (501) and a front plate (514) are positioned on a frame (512), a liquid resin is injected through a waterproof member injection port (520), the resin is cured to form a waterproof member (520), and then a substrate portion (530) may be assembled. In various embodiments, a part of the waterproof member (502) may be positioned within the waterproof member injection port (520). When the liquid resin is injected through the waterproof member injection port (520), a part of the resin remains in the waterproof member injection port (520) and is cured, so a part of the waterproof member (502) may be positioned within the waterproof member injection port (520). In various embodiments, the waterproof member (502) may be positioned in one direction within the waterproof member injection port (520). For example, the frame (512) of the housing (510) of the electronic device (500) has a polygonal shape (including a polygon with some of the corners rounded; the same applies hereinafter) having a plurality of sides and corners, the waterproofing member injection port (520) is positioned adjacent to the corner, and the waterproofing member (502) can be positioned so as to be offset in the opposite direction of the direction in which one side of the polygon extends within the waterproofing member injection port (520) (for example, the direction closer to the corner, the -y direction in the drawing). The offset phenomenon of the waterproofing member (502) can occur during the injection and curing process of the resin in a liquid state due to the flow due to the viscoelasticity of the resin and the volume change of the resin during curing.

[0200] In various embodiments, the step portion (527) of the waterproofing member inlet (520) may be formed so that a portion of the waterproofing member inlet (520) where the waterproofing member (502) is biased becomes higher (e.g., extends further in the -z direction). The first portion (528), which is a relatively higher portion of the waterproofing member inlet (520), may be formed in the portion where the waterproofing member (502) is biased, and the second portion (529) may be formed in the portion where the waterproofing member (502) is not biased. For example, the first portion (528) may be positioned in the opposite direction (e.g., the -y direction) of the direction in which one side of the housing (510) extends, and the second portion (529) may be positioned in the direction in which one side of the housing (510) extends (e.g., the y direction). Since the bias direction of the waterproof member (502) can be predicted theoretically and / or experimentally, the step portion (527) can be formed to match the bias direction of the waterproof member (502).

[0201] The height of the side wall (523) of the waterproofing member injection port (520) should be such that the liquid resin does not overflow when the waterproofing member (502) is injected. However, the waterproofing member injection port (520) occupies space within the electronic device (500), thereby reducing the space utilization rate of the electronic device (500) and acting as a factor that hinders miniaturization of the electronic device (500). Therefore, according to the present invention, the height of the waterproofing member injection port (520) is lowered and a mounting surface (521) is formed on the upper portion so that a component of the electronic device (500) (e.g., a substrate portion (530)) extends above the mounting surface (521), thereby increasing the internal space utilization rate of the electronic device (500). In addition, by forming a step portion (527) in accordance with the direction of the bias of the waterproofing member (502) and forming a mounting surface (521) on the upper part of the area (e.g., the second area) lowered by the step, the risk of liquid resin overflowing when injecting the waterproofing member (502) can be reduced as the waterproofing member injection port (520) is lowered.

[0202] FIG. 6 is a graph showing the radiation efficiency of an electronic device (500) according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0203] The comparative example of Fig. 6 shows the radiation efficiency of an electronic device in which the ground pad (535) of the circuit board is not connected to the metal frame (512) through the waterproof member injection port (520).

[0204] Referring to FIG. 6, it can be seen that the electronic device (500) according to the embodiment of the present invention has a radiation efficiency improved by 0.5 dB or more in a frequency band of 2500 MHz or more compared to the comparative example. This may be because, according to the embodiment of the present invention, the ground circuit (532) and the ground pad (535) of the substrate extension portion (533) extended above the waterproof member injection port (520) are grounded with low contact resistance to the mounting surface (521) of the waterproof member injection port (520) and the metal frame (512), thereby reducing the contact resistance of the RF circuit (531).

[0205] FIG. 7A is a plan view of an electronic device (500) according to various embodiments.

[0206] FIG. 7b is a perspective view of an electronic device (500) according to various embodiments.

[0207] Figures 7a and 7b are enlarged views of part B of Figure 3.

[0208] Referring to FIGS. 7A and 7B, the electronic device (500) may include a magnet (503). The magnet (503) may include, for example, a magnet for assisting a folding operation of a foldable type electronic device (500), a magnet for assisting a sliding operation of a rollable or slideable type electronic device (500), a magnet for assisting the mounting of various accessories of the electronic device (500), and / or a magnet for sensing that provides information about the state of the electronic device (500) in combination with a Hall sensor.

[0209] In various embodiments, at least a portion of the magnet (503) may be positioned on the mounting surface (521) of the waterproof member inlet (520). For example, the magnet (503) may include a magnet extension portion (503a) extending onto the mounting surface (521) of the waterproof member inlet (520). In order for the magnet (503) of the electronic device (500) to exert sufficient magnetic force for smooth operation, it is necessary to expand the area of the magnet (503). By extending the magnet (503) onto the mounting surface (521) of the waterproof member inlet (520), the area of the magnet (503) can be effectively expanded within the limited internal space of the electronic device (500), thereby ensuring sufficient magnetic force.
