AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

The existing technologies for sidelink positioning reference signal (PRS) transmission do not specify what should be transmitted in the automatic gain control (AGC) symbol, which is crucial for proper reception of SL PRS.

Method used

The proposed solution involves determining a sidelink positioning reference signal (PRS) sequence for an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol preceding the SL PRS resource and using this sequence to transmit an AGC symbol that maintains cross-correlation properties with the following SL PRS resource, thereby avoiding peak ambiguity.

Benefits of technology

This approach improves the positioning performance by ensuring accurate automatic gain control for the reception of sidelink positioning reference signals, reducing timing ambiguity and enhancing the overall accuracy of sidelink positioning.

Abstract

Example embodiments of the present disclosure relate to an AGC symbol usage for sidelink positioning reference signal transmission. In an aspect, a first terminal device determines a sidelink (SL) positioning reference signal (PRS) sequence for an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol preceding an SL PRS resource in a resource pool configured for transmitting SL PRS; and performs transmission to a second terminal device on the OFDM symbol based on the determined SL PRS sequence. This way, the first terminal device can transmit an OFDM symbol for AGC preceding the SL PRS resource, to adjust the RF level in the second terminal device, thus improving the positioning performance for the second terminal device.

[0046] In some embodiments, SL positioning is based on the transmissions of SL PRS by multiple anchor UEs to be received by a target UE in a method. The method can be SL time  difference of arrival (TDOA) method. The method can also be SL PRS exchange between the anchor UEs and the target UE in SL (multi-) round-trip time (RTT) method, to enable localization of the target UE and  / or ranging of target UE to a reference UE such as the anchor UE, within precise latency and accuracy requirements of the corresponding SL positioning. The skilled in the art can understand that the SL positioning can also be implemented in other methods.

[0047] FIG. 1 illustrates an example communication system in which some example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented.

[0048] In some embodiments, the communication system 100 in FIG. 1 illustrates a SL RTT positioning scenario where a second terminal device 103 such as the target UE is performing SL positioning by individually receiving SL PRSs 111, 113, 115 from three anchor UEs including the first terminal device 101, the third terminal device 105, and the fourth terminal device 107, and determining location of the second terminal device 103 such as the target UE using SL RTT method. The skilled in the art can understand that the target UE can transmit the SL PRSs, and the anchor UEs can receive the SL PRSs. Similarly, the skilled in the art can understand that the target UE can receive the SL PRSs, and the anchor UEs can transmit the SL PRSs.

[0049] Automatic gain control (AGC) symbols are used by the target UE to set the Rx RF properly to receive signals. For SL communication, the AGC symbols are not explicitly specified but reserved symbols, that are specified to be used for AGC. In TS 38.211 clause 8.2.1, the following was specific for SL communication: the first orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol of a physical sidelink share channel (PSSCH) and its associated physical sidelink control channel (PSCCH) is duplicated as described in clauses 8.3.1.5 and 8.3.2.3. The first OFDM symbol of a physical sidelink feedback channel (PSFCH) is duplicated as described in clause 8.3.4.2.2.

[0050] So far for SL positioning, the following relevant agreements have been reached regarding AGC symbols. It is agreed that an AGC symbol preceding a SL PRS resource is not considered as part of the SL PRS resource itself. It is also agreed that in a dedicated resource pool, a SL PRS resource is immediately preceded by an AGC symbol unless RAN1 explicitly agrees that an AGC symbol is not included for specific cases. Therefore, in a dedicated resource pool (D-RP) , the SL PRS will be preceded by an AGC symbol, but the AGC symbol is not part of the SL PRS itself. What will be transmitted in this AGC  symbol is still an open question. So far RAN1 has also agreed that 1 symbol PRS will be supported.

[0051] As illustrated above, in current SL communications, the AGC symbols are duplicated symbols of the PSSCH, PSCCH, or PSFCH. There have been some proposals for how to handle AGC symbols for SL PRS, such as copy the first symbol or the last symbol.

[0052] AGC symbols are necessary for SL communication and have also been deemed necessary for SL positioning. So far it has only been agreed that a SL PRS in a dedicated resource pool (RP) will be preceded by an AGC symbol, but what the TX UE should send in that symbol is an open problem. The following proposal was discussed.

[0053] When an AGC symbol is transmitted immediately preceding a SL PRS resource, consider the following options for generation of the AGC symbol. Alternative one is that the first symbol of SL PRS is repeated to realize an AGC symbol. Alternative two is that copy of last symbol of a SL PRS resource is used to realize an AGC symbol. Alternative three is that AGC symbol is a duplication of the expected symbol next to the final symbol of fully or partially staggered SL PRS. Alternative four is that when the first symbol is used for AGC handling, the duplication mechanism of first symbol is left to UE implementation. Alternative five is other alternative.

[0054] The issue with alternative one which was pointed out by some companies is that the first symbol being repeated may cause some peak ambiguity when a reception (RX) UE is making timing measurements. This is due to the fact that the RX UE will use a cross correlation function in time domain to make timing measurements and having a repeated symbol will create a second peak during the measurement procedure.

[0055] In addition, since one symbol SL PRS has been agreed, the last symbol of the SL PRS resource is also the first symbol of the SL PRS. Therefore, alternative two above is also problematic for the same reason as an alternative one. Alternative three is problematic as it duplicated something after the SL PRS, but the SL PRS can be the last thing transmitted in a slot, and therefore the AGC symbol cannot rely on there being something to copy. Alternative four is also problematic as it breaks with SL principles and the UE may do something that causes harm to the SL positioning measurements. Therefore, it is needed to solve the problem of what the TX UE should send in the AGC symbol before an SL PRS resource.

[0056] In some embodiments, the reserved symbol for SL PRS AGC is used to transmit a signal which has good cross-correlation properties to the SL PRS resource that is about to be transmitted. This SL PRS AGC symbol is transmitted by the TX UE and is used by the RX UE to set the AGC for the reception of the upcoming SL PRS resource. There are multiple options for how the TX UE can set the SL PRS AGC symbol. This way, the SL PRS AGC symbol can be generated flexibly.

[0057] In option one, the TX UE selects an SL PRS sequence generation identifier (ID) such as for the SL PRS AGC symbol by taking the sequence generation ID such as for the following SL PRS resource and adding an offset X to the ID. The TX UE uses this new ID to generate the first symbol of a virtual SL PRS resource and use the first symbol of that virtual resource as the SL PRS AGC symbol. This way, the cross-correlation properties can be kept between the AGC symbol and the following SL PRS resource, to avoid peak ambiguity.

[0058] In option two, the TX UE uses an SL PRS sequence generation ID such as  which is configured by the TX UE’s higher layers and  / or by a network (pre) -configuration to generate a 1-symbol sequence for the SL PRS AGC symbol. This way, the cross-correlation properties can be kept between the AGC symbol and the following SL PRS resource, to avoid peak ambiguity for several anchor UEs.

[0059] In option three, here is a reserved SL PRS sequence generation ID which is used by all TX UEs to generate a 1-symbol sequence for the SL PRS AGC symbol. This way, it is simple to avoid peak ambiguity and to save resources for an indication from the TX UE to the RX UE, about SL PRS sequence generation ID.

[0060] In option four, the TX UE may provide the RX UE with the information on which symbol of the one or multiple symbols in the SL PRS resource is duplicated for the SL PRS AGC. This way, it is simple to implement the AGC symbol for SL PRS.

[0061] The target UE can transmit the AGC symbol and the following one or multiple SL PRS symbols, and the anchor UEs can receive the AGC symbol and the following one or multiple SL PRS symbols. This way, the positioning procedure can be more flexible.

[0062] The detailed implementation is illustrated in the following.

[0063] FIG. 2 illustrates an example of process flow for AGC usage for SL PRS transmission.

[0064] In the process 200, at 205, the first terminal device 101 determines a sidelink (SL) positioning reference signal (PRS) sequence for an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol preceding an SL PRS resource in a resource pool configured for transmitting SL PRS. At 210, the second terminal device 103 obtains information regarding transmission to be performed by the first terminal device 101 on an OFDM symbol preceding an SL PRS resource in a resource pool configured for transmitting SL PRS. The first terminal device 101 transmits (213) to the second terminal device 103, an OFDM symbol based on the determined SL PRS sequence 215. This way, the first terminal device 101 can transmit an OFDM symbol for AGC preceding the SL PRS resource, to adjust the RF level in the second terminal device 103, thus improving the positioning performance for the second terminal device 103.

[0065] In some embodiments, the first terminal device 101 can determine a first SL PRS sequence generation identifier (ID) for the SL PRS resource after the OFDM symbol, such as the SL PRS sequence generation ID The first terminal device 101 adds an offset X to the to get a second SL PRS sequence generation ID, then generates the OFDM symbol based on the second SL PRS sequence generation ID for AGC to the second terminal device 103. X can be 1 or other values. In some embodiment, if is greater than a predetermined value. The predetermined value can be the maximum value of  such as 4095, the first terminal device 101 computes and use the modular operation result as the second SL PRS sequence generation ID. This way, the cross-correlation properties can be kept between the AGC symbol and the following SL PRS resource, to avoid peak ambiguity, and finally to improve SL positioning performance. The offset can be pre-configured or configured by a network device, or pre-defined as a fixed integer number in the specification. This way, the offset can be pre-configured or configured flexibly, or implemented simply.

[0066] In some embodiments, the SL PRS sequence generation ID for the OFDM symbol for AGC can be configured by a high layer of the first terminal device 101. Additionally or alternatively, the SL PRS sequence generation ID for the OFDM symbol for AGC can also be configured by the network device. For example, the first terminal device 101 may determine that another UE such as the third terminal device 105 or the fourth terminal device 107 in FIG. 1 is using a sequence generation ID close to the one that the first terminal device 101 itself is using for the SL PRS resource. In this case, the first terminal device 101 higher layers or another coordinating entity such as a location management  function (LMF) or a server UE may decide on a sequence ID to be used for the AGC symbol. The server UE can be different than the first terminal device 101 or the second device 103. This way, the configuration can get good cooperation among different TX UEs, avoid interference from different TX UEs, and finally improve SL positioning performance.

[0067] In some embodiments, the first terminal device 101 can receive from the LMF or the server UE, a resource element (RE) pattern configuration for the 1-symbol sequence in the frequency domain. For example, Comb-1 can be configured so that the received signal is not repeated in the time domain. This way, the SL PRS sequence generation ID can be configured by the first terminal device 101’s higher layer or the network, to get good cooperation among different TX UEs, avoid interference from different TX UEs, and finally improve SL positioning performance.

[0068] In some embodiments, the SL PRS sequence generation ID for the OFDM symbol for AGC can be reserved, such as 0. The SL PRS sequence generation ID for the OFDM symbol for AGC can also be in a list of multiple dedicate reserved SL PRS sequence generation IDs. The first terminal device 101 can select one SL PRS sequence generation ID from the list, for generating the OFDM symbol for AGC. With reserved SL PRS sequence ID (s) , the implementation can be simplified. And by selection in the list of reserved SL PRS sequence dIDs, interference can be avoided among the first terminal device 101 and the other anchor UEs, such as the third terminal device 105 and the fourth terminal device 107 in Fig. 1.

[0069] In some embodiments, the first terminal device 101 can determine the SL PRS sequence for the OFDM symbol for AGC, based on duplication of one of symbols of the following SL PRS resource, and provides to the second terminal device 103, the information on which symbol of the SL PRS resource is duplicated. This way, the implementation can be simplified, for determining the SL PRS sequence for the OFDM symbol for AGC.

[0070] In some embodiments, after determining the SL PRS sequence for the OFDM symbol for AGC, the first terminal device 101 can transmit to the second terminal device 103, information regarding the transmission to be performed on the OFDM symbol. The information can be the offset X to be added to the SL PRS sequence generation ID for the SL PRS resource following the OFDM symbol for AGC. Additionally or alternatively, the information can be the SL PRS sequence generation ID determined by the  first terminal device 101, for the OFDM symbol for AGC. Additionally or alternatively, the information can be the SL PRS sequence generation ID for the OFDM symbol for AGC, which is selected from the list of the reserved SL PRS sequence generation IDs. Additionally or alternatively, the information can be which symbol of the one or multiple symbols of the SL PRS resource is duplicated for the SL PRS AGC. This way, it is simple for the second terminal device 103 to determine the sequence generation ID for the SL PRS AGC symbol.

[0071] In some embodiments, the information for the OFDM symbol for AGC can be transmitted from the first terminal device 101 to the second terminal device 103 in one of the following formats: sidelink control information (SCI) , a media access control (MAC) control element (CE) , a sidelink positioning protocol (SLPP) message, or a radio resource control (RRC) message. This way, the information for the OFDM symbol for AGC can be transmitted to the second terminal device 103 flexibly.

[0072] In some embodiments, the SL PRS sequence can be a pseudorandom noise (PN) sequence to simplify the implementation, or a Zadoff-Chu (ZC) sequence to achieve low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) .

[0073] FIG. 3 illustrates another example of process flow for AGC usage for SL PRS transmission.

[0074] In the process flow 300, the TX UE 301 can be an implementation of the first terminal device 101, and the RX UE 303 can be an implementation of the second terminal device 103 in FIG. 1. The skilled in the art can understand that the TX UE 301 can also be an implementation of the third terminal device 105 or the fourth terminal device 107.

[0075] In step zero, the TX UE 101 and the RX UE 103 are in an SL positioning initiation procedure 310.

[0076] In step one, at 315, the TX UE 101 determines the need for an SL PRS AGC symbol in a dedicated resource pool, and specifically determines the SL PRD sequence ID to generate the sequence for the SL PRS AGC symbol. The TX UE 101 generates the SL PRS AGC sequence using one of the following options.

[0077] In some embodiments, in option one, the TX UE 301 selects an SL PRS sequence generation ID such as for the SL PRS AGC symbol by taking the sequence generation ID such as for the following SL PRS resource and adding an offset X  to the ID, where may be configured for each SL PRS resource. The TX UE 301 uses this new ID to generate the first symbol of a virtual SL PRS resource and use the first symbol of that virtual resource as the SL PRS AGC symbol. For example, the UE may take  and simply add 1 to the ID to then generate a 1 symbol sequence using the SL PRS sequence generation method. The TX UE 301 may also use a modulo operation in case adding X to leads to a number greater than a predetermined value such as the maximum value of which is specified to be 4095 in Rel-18. Such as the TX UE 301 computes the AGC sequence generation ID as mod 4096. The value of X may be pre-configured or configured or hard coded in specification. This way, the cross-correlation properties can be kept between the AGC symbol and the following SL PRS resource, to avoid peak ambiguity, and finally to improve SL positioning performance.

[0078] In some embodiments, in option two, the RX UE 301 uses an SL PRS sequence generation ID which is configured by the TX UE’s higher layers and  / or by network pre-configuration or configuration to generate a 1-symbol sequence for the SL PRS AGC symbol. For example, the TX UE 301 may determine that another UE such as the third terminal device 105 or the fourth terminal device 107 in FIG. 1 is using a sequence generation ID close to the one that the TX UE 301 such as the first terminal device 101 itself is using for the SL PRS resource. In this case, the TX UE 301 higher layers or another coordinating entity such as a location management function (LMF) or a server UE may decide on a sequence ID to be used for the AGC symbol. The server UE can be different from the TX UE 301 or the Rx UE 303. The server UE may perform at least a part of the functionality of LMF such as a request of measurement reporting and location estimation based on the reported measurement. In this case, the TX UE 301 may also signal to the Rx UE 303 which sequence generation ID it is using for SL PRS AGC. For example, the TX UE 301 may use SCI, MAC-CE, SLPP, or RRC to signal this information to the Rx UE 303. This way, the TX UE 301 can signal the sequence generation ID to the RX UE 303 efficiently. In another embodiment, on top of the SL PRS sequence generation ID, the network may provide a separate RE pattern for 1-symbol sequence in the frequency domain. For example, Comb-1 can be configured so that the received signal is not repeated in the time domain. This way, the SL PRS sequence generation ID can be configured by the TX UE 301’s higher layer or the network, to get good cooperation among different TX UEs, avoid interference from different TX UEs, and finally improve SL positioning performance.

[0079] In some embodiments, in option three, there is a reserved SL PRS sequence generation ID which is used by all TX UEs to generate a 1-symbol sequence for the SL PRS AGC symbol. For example, the sequence generation ID of 0 could be reserved, which means that no UE should use that sequence generation ID for SL PRS sequence generation. Then all the RX UEs which will transmit an SL PRS resource use the sequence ID of 0 to generate the sequence for the SL PRS AGC symbol. This way, it is simplified to determine the sequence ID for the SL PRS AGC symbol. In one embodiment, the network may provide a list of multiple SL PRS sequence generation IDs, which are dedicate reserved for the AGC symbol of the SL PRS, and the TX UE 301 selects one of them and inform the selected one to the RX UE 303. In case many SL UEs are nearby, the same sequence generation ID may result in an interference problem so this embodiment can avoid this potential interference issue, and finally improve SL positioning performance.

[0080] In some embodiments, in option four, the TX UE 301 may provide the RX UE 303 with the information on which symbol of the one or multiple symbols of the SL PRS resource is duplicated for the SL PRS AGC. For example, the TX UE 301 may duplicate the 2nd symbol of the SL PRS resource and inform this information to the RX UE 303. The TX UE 301 may expect that the RX UE 303 will perform positioning measurements except for the AGC symbol. This way, it is simple to determine the sequence generation ID for the SL PRS AGC symbol.

[0081] In step 2, the TX UE 301 signals (318) any necessary information 320 about the SL PRS AGC symbol to the RX UE 303. In step 3, the TX UE 301 transmits (323) the SL PRS AGC symbol 325 according to the sequence generated in step 1, and then transmits the SL PRS resource immediately following the AGC symbol. In step 4, at 330, the RX UE 303 receives the SL PRS after performing the necessary AGC on the preceding symbol of the SL PRS resource. At step 4, the RX UE 303 shall adjust the gain of amplifier with the reception of the AGC symbol before it receives SL PRS. The timing ambiguity in alternative 1 and alternative 2 can be mitigated because of the difference between the AGC symbol and SL PRS. The AGC adjustment based on the AGC symbol is up to implementation in the RX UE 303. This way, the RX UE 303 can adjust its gain of amplifier according to the AGC symbol, to eliminate the influence of fading between the TX UE 301 and the RX UE 303, thus improving SL positioning measurement performance, and finally improving positioning performance.

[0082] Some embodiments of the present disclosure can be based on a pseudo-random (PN) sequence for SL PRS transmission. For the AGC symbol, a specific 1-symbol Zadoff-Chu (ZC) sequence can alternatively be introduced. The TX UE 301 can avoid high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) signal transmission for the AGC and the RX UE 303 can still perform AGC. The above option two and option three can be directly applied to the ZC sequence. In consideration of multiple SL UEs being able to transmit the AGC SL PRS on the same symbol, multiple sets of different ZC sequences, which preserve orthogonality, can be configured by the network and selected by the TX UE 301. This way, the low PAPR can be achieved, to improve the energy efficiency of the AGC symbol and the following SL PRS resource, and to reduce interference.

[0083] The target UE can transmit the AGC symbol and the following one or multiple SL PRS symbols, and the anchor UEs can receive the AGC symbol and the following one or multiple SL PRS symbols. This way, the positioning procedure can be more flexible.

[0084] FIG. 4 illustrates an example of frame structure of AGC usage for SL PRS transmission.

[0085] In the frame structure 400, there are PSCCH 1 symbol 405 and PSCCH 2 symbol 410. SL PRS AGC symbol 415 is for RF adjustment in the RX UE 303, for receiving the following SL PRS resource #1 420. SL PRS AGC symbol 425 is also for RF adjustment in the RX UE 303, for receiving the following SL PRS resource #2 430. There is one or more symobs in the SL PRS resource #1 420 or the SL PRS resource #2 430. The AGC symbol and the SL PRS resource are adjacent, to achieve accurate RF adjustment.

[0086] FIG. 5 illustrates an example of a method implemented at a first terminal device.

[0089] In some embodiments, the first terminal device 101 is further caused to: based on determining that a sum of the first SL PRS sequence generation ID and the offset is greater than a predetermined value, perform a modulo operation on the sum with the maximum value of SL PRS sequence generation ID plus one to determine the second SL PRS sequence generation ID. In some embodiments, a value of the offset is one of the following: pre-configured or configured by a network device; or pre-defined as a fixed integer number.
