[0005] FIELD OF INVENTION
[0006] The present invention relates generally to the field of assistive technology, electric mobility, and micro-mobility. Specifically, it focuses on power assist system for wheelchairs to facilitate outdoor mobility and indoor assistance. The present invention addresses the needs of wheelchair users to utilize the system both indoors and outdoors, aiming to enhance overall accessibility and mobility across a diverse environment.
[0007] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0008] Wheelchairs are a fundamental and basic form of mobility aid for individuals with physical disabilities. Traditional wheelchairs are propelled by the user manually using their hands to push the wheels. The rear wheel is equipped with hand rims that the users grip to propel themselves forward or backward. Manual wheelchairs may not be suitable for individuals with severe mobility impairments or users with limited upper body strength, as they may find it challenging to propel the wheelchair by themselves. This leads to dependence on assistance from others, limiting their ability to move independently. Also, certain environments like uneven terrains, and tough surfaces may not be wheelchair-friendly which hinders the mobility of individuals relying on manual wheelchairs. The powered wheelchair has overcome these problems by employing electric motors for propulsion, eliminating the need for physical effort. It enables independent mobility, giving users control over their movements without relying on assistance. Furthermore, powered wheelchairs are engineered to navigate various outdoor terrains, including uphill climbs and uneven surfaces, providing greater versatility and accessibility. Despite the numerous advantages offered by powered wheelchairs, they also present certain challenges and limitations. Generally, powered wheelchairs are heavier and bulkier compared to manual wheelchairs. They are not portable and may not easily fit into standard-sized cars, posing challenges for users during transportation, especially when considering the weight limits and space constraints of certain vehicles. Moreover, powered wheelchairs can be challenging to navigate in tight spaces, such as narrow doorways, crowded areas, or spaces with a limited turning radius, impacting user’s ability to move seamlessly in various environments.
[0009] With the advent of technology, power assist wheelchairs have emerged to address specific challenges associated with both traditional manual wheelchairs and fully powered wheelchairs. Power-assist wheelchairs incorporate electric motors that provide assistance during manual propulsion, enabling users to self-propel when possible and utilize powered assistance when facing challenges. This promotes increased independence and control over their movement. With the aid of a power assist wheelchair, users can navigate outdoor environments such as rough terrains, gravel paths, and uneven surfaces. However, a notable challenge with the existing power assist wheelchairs in the market is that they are often specialized for either outdoor mobility or indoor assistance. This necessitates users to invest in multiple devices, each tailored to a particular environment - either indoors or outdoors. As a result, users need to switch between devices depending on their current location or activity. In the current market, these devices are designed specifically for specific purposes, for example, the Permobil SmartDrive caters to indoor applications, while NeoBolt is designed for outdoor usage. Adding to these limitations, existing power assist devices are often either bulky or non-portable, resembling powered wheelchairs in this aspect.
[0010] To overcome such limitations, the present invention aims to introduce a three-way power assist system designed for wheelchair users, that can also function as a scooter board for nonwheelchair users. The present system operates in three modes: an indoor mode for wheelchair users, an outdoor mode for wheelchair users, and a transport mode for non -wheelchair users. The primary goal of the present invention is to provide a power assist solution for wheelchairs adaptable to both indoor and outdoor environments. The present system provides a lightweight solution that offers power-on-demand or power assistance to a manual wheelchair user. The present invention features a detachable and portable three-way power assist unit that can be easily transported in a car alongside a manual wheelchair. Additionally, the present invention provides a convertible scooter mode that can be used by non-wheelchair users as needed.
[0011] Various prior arts have disclosed similar power assist systems for wheelchairs:
[0012] There are several power assist solutions for wheelchairs that already exist in the market. However, these systems often encounter challenges owing to their bulky and non -portable nature. This poses inconveniences for wheelchair users who require frequent transportation of their wheelchairs. Certain power assist devices are designed for either indoor or outdoor use, which limits their versatility. This restriction impacts users who need a solution capable of seamlessly transitioning between different environments.
[0013] US Patent Application US20230172777A1 discloses a system involving the scooter base designed to connect with a wheelchair frame. The present invention features a rear-powered wheel that is not rigidly attached to the wheelchair. This design allows for the efficient utilization of the power generated by the wheel to propel the wheelchair, a unique aspect absent in the prior art. The present system is further enhanced by a handle that securely holds the wheelchair at two distinct points, making it more robust. The present invention incorporates a detachable front handle, allowing the wheelchair to navigate in tight indoor spaces with ease. Notably, the present invention employs only three wheels in contact with the ground, including a suspended wheel for improved traction on uneven surfaces. This feature effectively addresses the potential limitations in the prior art, especially concerning traction on challenging terrains. Korean Patent Application KR20190130390A provides an auxiliary power device for a wheelchair, which includes an electric module, and a coupling module coupling the electric module and a wheelchair. Wherein the coupling module includes a first coupling unit installed on the electric module, and a second coupling unit installed on the wheelchair and formed such that a first bending moment downwardly rotating the electric module towards the ground and a second bending moment downwardly rotating the wheelchair towards the ground for balance while a front portion of the wheelchair is lifted from the ground to be coupled to the first coupling unit. In contrast to prior art, the present invention provides a three-way power assist system that can be used by both wheelchair users and non-wheelchair users in three different modes according to their specific needs. The present system is equipped with a powered rear wheel which ensures high traction when going uphill, which is a notable advantage over powered front wheels that experience reduced traction with an increase in gradient.
[0014] Patent Application WO2017185148A1 discloses a multifunctional motor-driven system that can be used in manual wheelchairs which includes a line of interchangeable accessories to transform a wheelchair or a non-powered device into a tricycle or portable motor-driven accessory. It is crucial to highlight that the present invention provides a three-way power assist system designed for both indoor and outdoor use, catering to the needs of wheelchair users, and the system can also function as a scooter board for non -wheelchair users. Notably, the present invention is equipped with a powered rear wheel that ensures high traction even when going uphill as opposed to powered front wheels that lose traction with an increase in gradient. Furthermore, the present invention incorporates a coupling system capable of accommodating wheelchairs of varying widths.
[0015] A Product “Handlebar Attachment Turns a Wheelchair into a Scooter” features an electro-mechanical attachment designed to easily clamp onto most manual wheelchairs. This compact device can be attached in less than a minute, transforming the manual wheelchair into a type of power trike. The Firefly lifts the wheelchair’s smaller front wheels off the ground and replaces them with a larger single wheel. The wheel is attached to a power pack and a set of motorcycle-like handlebars. The device features an odometer, a speedometer, a reverse gear, a parking brake, a twist throttle, and two brake levers.
