[0015] (Display Medium) A display medium 1 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure can display content with a variety of decorations. FIG. 1 is a diagram illustrating an example of content displayed by the display medium 1. The display medium 1 displays an image decorated with a design in which the color of the designated content changes successively. A user viewing the display medium 1 will perceive the color of the designated content as having a structural color or iridescent color, or as having a sparkling decoration. In the present disclosure, content refers to content that includes images, such as still images, videos, and videos with audio.

[0016] As shown in FIG. 1 , the display medium 1 displays the reference content D in a first direction D1, the first converted content Ja in a second direction D2, and the second converted content Jb in a third direction D3. The first direction D1, the second direction D2, and the third direction D3 are different from one another. The first converted content Ja and the second converted content Jb are contents obtained by converting the color of the reference content D while having the same composition. The first converted content Ja and the second converted content Jb have the same composition and color hue. The first converted content Ja and the second converted content Jb have their colors converted by different methods. When there is no need to particularly distinguish between the first converted content Ja and the second converted content Jb, they may be simply referred to as converted content J.

[0017] The display medium 1 displays three pieces of content with the same composition but different colors in different directions. A user views the display medium 1 by changing their viewpoint relative to the display medium 1. At this time, the user may change their viewpoint relative to the display medium 1, or may move the display medium 1. The display medium 1 can display content with a common composition but with colors that change one after another to the user, and therefore can display content decorated with a wide variety of colors.

[0018] 1, the display medium 1 displays one reference content D and two converted contents J in three directions, but this is not limiting. The display medium 1 may display multiple contents with the same composition but different colors in each of two or more directions. The display medium 1 may not display the reference content D, but may instead display two or more converted contents J with the same composition as the reference content D but different colors.

[0019] (First embodiment) A display medium 1 according to a first embodiment will be described with reference to FIG. 2. The display medium 1 according to the first embodiment has the configuration of the display medium described in Patent Document 3. As shown in FIG. 2, the display medium 1 includes a substrate 201. The substrate 201 may be in the form of a thin sheet such as paper, or may be three-dimensional. The upper surface of the substrate 201 may be flat or curved. As shown in FIG. 2, the display medium 1 has a plurality of cells C on its surface. In the example shown in FIG. 2, the user's viewpoint is located upward in the Z-axis direction (thickness direction). In the example shown in FIG. 2, the display medium 1 has a rectangular parallelepiped shape, but the shape is not important.

[0020] 3, the display medium 1 has an upper layer Lu and a lower layer Lb. The names of the upper layer Lu and the lower layer Lb are unrelated to the direction of gravity and are not dependent on the arrangement of the display medium 1. In the first embodiment, the layer closer to the user's viewpoint is called the upper layer Lu. The layer farther from the user's viewpoint is called the lower layer Lb.

[0021] As shown in Figures 3 and 4, the upper layer Lu and the lower layer Lb are formed on the XY plane and arranged parallel to the Z-axis direction. The display medium 1 displays multiple contents corresponding to multiple directions based on the portions of light from multiple directions that pass through the upper layer Lu and the lower layer Lb. Each content is visible from a respective viewpoint provided at a position where the light from multiple directions that has passed through the upper layer Lu and the lower layer Lb is incident. The display medium 1 displays multiple contents because, for each direction, the combination of the color of the portion that passes through the upper layer Lu and the color of the portion that passes through the lower layer Lb is different. The display medium 1 displays content at three different viewpoints above the upper layer Lu and the lower layer Lb in the Z-axis direction. The three different viewpoints differ in at least the values (coordinates) in the X-axis direction and the values (coordinates) in the Y-axis direction.

[0022] In the first embodiment, the light in the predetermined direction used when displaying content is emitted at least from a direction opposite to the viewpoint with respect to the upper layer Lu and the lower layer Lb. When the viewpoint is located above the upper layer Lu and the lower layer Lb in the Z-axis direction, the light needs to be emitted from below the upper layer Lu and the lower layer Lb in the Z-axis direction, and the position of the light source does not matter. The light traveling from below the lower layer Lb in the Z-axis direction to above may be, for example, light from a light source located at an arbitrary position and reflected by the base material M, or light from a light source located on the base material M. Alternatively, the light may be light emitted from a light source (not shown) located on the back side of the base material M and transmitted through the base material M.

[0023] 3, a transparent layer N is formed between an upper surface layer Lu and a lower surface layer Lb. A base material M is provided on the lower surface layer Lb in the opposite direction of the Z-axis from the transparent layer N. The display medium 1 is formed by stacking these members in the Z-axis direction in the order of the base material M, the lower surface layer Lb, the transparent layer N, and the upper surface layer Lu.

[0024] The transparent layer N is preferably formed from a material that transmits a large amount of light without absorbing color components of light (visible light). The transparent layer N is formed from a transparent material such as water or transparent plastic. The transparent layer N may also be formed from air. In other words, the upper surface layer Lu and the lower surface layer Lb may be arranged parallel to each other at a predetermined distance. The base material M is formed from a material such as a mirror or white paper that makes it easy to see the colors imparted to the upper surface layer Lu and the lower surface layer Lb.

[0025] As shown in Figures 3 and 4, the top layer Lu is formed of a transparent material and has a plurality of top cells Cu. Each of the plurality of top cells Cu has a color region. The bottom layer Lb is formed of a transparent material and has a plurality of bottom cells Cb. Each of the plurality of bottom cells Cb has a color region. A printer or the like that applies color to the color regions of the top cells Cu and bottom cells Cb can identify the position of each color region based on a predetermined definition of the positions of the top cells Cu and bottom cells Cb. The positions of the top cells Cu and bottom cells Cb do not have to be visible. For example, there does not have to be a clear line, partition, recess, or other separation between two adjacent top cells Cu or two adjacent bottom cells Cb. Two adjacent top cells Cu or two adjacent bottom cells Cb do not have to be physically separated. Furthermore, at the boundary between two adjacent upper surface cells Cu or two lower surface cells Cb, the ends of the two cells may be given the same color or the same colorless color, so that the adjacent cells C are not visible.

[0026] In the first embodiment, each top surface cell Cu of the top surface layer Lu and each bottom surface cell Cb of the bottom surface layer Lb are formed by dividing each layer in the same manner. That is, each top surface cell Cu of the top surface layer Lu is formed at a position shifted in the Z-axis direction from each bottom surface cell Cb of the bottom surface layer Lb, while maintaining the same position in the X-axis direction and Y-axis direction. More specifically, as shown in FIG. 4 , in the embodiment of the present invention, the top surface cell Cu of the top surface layer Lu is formed at a position shifted in the Z-axis direction from the bottom surface cell Cb of the bottom surface layer Lb. The same applies to other cells. In the first embodiment, the relationship between cells formed at positions shifted in the Z-axis direction, such as the top surface cell Cu and the bottom surface cell Cb, is referred to as "corresponding." Note that in the first embodiment, a case will be described in which the corresponding top surface cell Cb and bottom surface cell Cb are positioned in the same X-axis direction and Y-axis direction, but only differ in position in the Z-axis direction, but this is not limited to this. As another example, the positions of the corresponding upper surface cell Cb and lower surface cell Cb may be shifted in the X-axis direction or the Y-axis direction in addition to the Z-axis direction.

[0027] In the first embodiment, cell C includes an upper surface cell Cu of an upper surface layer Lu and a lower surface cell Cb of a lower surface layer Lb that overlaps (corresponds to) the upper surface cell Cu. Cell C is identified by a combination of corresponding upper surface cells Cu and lower surface cells Cb among the upper surface cells Cu of the upper surface layer Lu and the lower surface cells Cb of the lower surface layer Lb.

[0028] As shown in Fig. 4, in the first embodiment, markers Vu and Vb are provided on the upper layer Lu and the lower layer Lb, respectively. When the display medium 1 is formed by stacking two transparent members, and the two transparent members are properly stacked, the markers Vu and Vb provided on the two transparent members will overlap. Here, in the present disclosure, "properly stacked" refers to a case where the upper layer Lu and the lower layer Lb are properly stacked according to the design of the display medium 1. Specifically, a case where the reference content D is displayed in a first direction and the converted content J is displayed in a second direction.

[0029] In the present disclosure, a case will be described in which the markers Vu and Vb overlap to indicate the overlapping position of the top layer Lu and the bottom layer Lb, but this is not limiting. The markers Vu and Vb may simply indicate the appropriate overlapping position of the top layer Lu and the bottom layer Lb.

[0030] 3 to 5, the upper surface layer Lu is formed of a transparent material and has a plurality of upper surface cells Cu. Each of the plurality of upper surface cells Cu has color regions G11 and G12. The lower surface layer Lb is formed of a transparent material and has a plurality of lower surface cells Cb. Each of the plurality of lower surface cells Cb has color regions G21, G22, G23, G24, G25, and G26. Each of the color regions G11, G12, G21, G22, G23, G24, G25, and G26 is formed of one or more pixels. Here, a pixel is the smallest unit to which the manufacturing equipment for the display medium 1 can give the same color.

[0031] In the first embodiment, a case where each top surface cell Cu and each bottom surface cell Cb has a color region of the same shape will be described, but the shape may differ for each top surface cell Cu or bottom surface cell Cb. Also, in the first embodiment, a case where multiple color regions are provided in the X-axis direction on each of the top surface layer Lu and bottom surface layer Lb will be described, but a single color region may be provided. Also, a case where one color region is provided in the Y-axis direction will be described, but multiple color regions may be provided. Furthermore, a case where multiple color regions are provided adjacent to each other will be described, but multiple color regions may be provided discretely, for example, with transparent regions provided between the multiple color regions.

[0032] Referring to FIG. 5 , the top cell Cu and the bottom cell Cb that form one cell will be described. In the first embodiment, each of the top cell Cu and the bottom cell Cb has a color region and a transparent region where no color is assigned. The color regions are located away from the edges of each of the top cell Cu and the bottom cell Cb. The transparent regions are the unhatched areas in FIG. 5 . A transparent region is provided at the boundary between each of the top cell Cu and the bottom cell Cb. A color region is provided inside the transparent region. By providing a transparent region, light passing through a color region can be formed so that it does not pass through the color region of an adjacent cell, thereby reducing the burden of calculating the color assigned to each color region. The color region is formed by applying ink to each layer. The ink may be dye ink or pigment ink. One color region is formed by one or more pixels. In the present disclosure, one color is assigned uniformly within one color region G11. The same applies to the other color areas G12 to G26.

[0033] The positions of the top cell Cu and the bottom cell Cb are set so that in one cell, light passing through the color region of the top cell Cu passes through the bottom cell Cb, and light passing through the color region of the bottom cell Cb passes through the top cell Cu. In the first embodiment, a case is described in which the top cell Cu and the bottom cell Cb included in one cell are shifted in the Z-axis direction, but this is not limited to this. The corresponding top cell Cu and bottom cell Cb may be shifted in a diagonal direction, specifically, not only in the Z-axis direction but also in the X-axis or Y-axis direction.

[0034] In the first embodiment, the cells are formed so that when viewed from each of the first to third directions, the color region of the bottom cell Cb overlaps with the color region of the top cell Cu in a different portion. This allows the cells to display different colors in the first to third directions. Here, "different from each other" means not completely identical, and includes not only completely different colors but also colors that are at least partially the same and partially different.

[0035] For example, in the first direction of Fig. 5(a), the color regions G11 and G12 of the top cell Cu overlap with the color regions G23 and G24 of the bottom cell Cb. In the second direction of Fig. 5(b), the color regions G11 and G12 of the top cell Cu overlap with the color regions G25 and G26 of the bottom cell Cb. In the third direction of Fig. 5(c), the color regions G11 and G12 of the top cell Cu overlap with the color regions G21 and G22 of the bottom cell Cb.

[0036] 5, the color regions of the bottom cell Cb that overlap with the color region of the top cell Cu in the first to third directions do not completely overlap, but partial overlap is also possible. For example, in another embodiment, color regions G23 and G24 overlap with the color region of the top cell Cu in the first direction. Color regions G24 and G25 may overlap with the color region of the top cell Cu in the second direction, and color regions G22 and G23 may overlap with the color region of the top cell Cu in the third direction.

[0037] Note that if the ink used in the color regions is a highly transparent ink, such as a dye ink, the user can visually perceive a color resulting from a mixture of the colors of the overlapping color regions from each viewpoint in each viewing direction. In Figure 5(a), the user perceives a color resulting from a mixture of the colors G11 and G23, and a color resulting from a mixture of the colors G12 and G24. Furthermore, through juxtaposition additive color mixing, the user perceives a color resulting from a mixture of the colors G11 and G23, a color resulting from a mixture of the colors G12 and G24, and a color resulting from a mixture of the colors G21, G22, G25, and G26.

[0038] On the other hand, if the ink used in the color region is a low-transparency ink such as a pigment ink, the user will be able to see the color closest to the viewpoint in the viewing direction. In Figure 5(a), the user sees the colors G11 and G12. Furthermore, the user sees a color obtained by mixing G11 and G12 with the colors G21, G22, G25, and G26 due to juxtaposition additive color mixing.

[0039] In this way, in each cell of the display medium 1 according to the first embodiment, the portion of the color area of the bottom cell Cb that overlaps with the color area of the top cell Cu differs in the first, second, and third directions, so that different content can be displayed in the three directions.

[0040] Specifically, the display medium 1 displays reference content D in a first direction. The display medium 1 displays first converted content Ja, which has the same composition as the reference content D but has been color-converted, in a second direction. The display medium 1 displays second converted content Jb, which has the same composition as the reference content D but has been color-converted, in a third direction.

[0041] In the first embodiment, the user alternates between a viewpoint from which the reference content D is visible, a viewpoint from which the first converted content Ja is visible, and a viewpoint from which the second converted content Jb is visible on the display medium 1. Specifically, the user changes the viewpoint from directly above, diagonally upward to the left, and diagonally upward to the right with respect to the display medium 1. This allows the user to view content decorated with a variety of colors.

[0042] 6, a processing device 10 that determines the colors to be applied to the display medium 1 will be described. The processing device 10 assigns colors to each pixel in a color region of the display medium 1 that has a plurality of pixels, and generates manufacturing data 13 for producing the display medium 1.

[0043] The processing device 10 includes reference data 11, conversion data 12, manufacturing data 13, cell color data 31, condition data 32, and shape data 33, as well as functions of an acquisition unit 21, a conversion unit 22, and a generation unit 23. Each piece of data is stored in a storage device such as a memory 902 or a storage 903. Each function is implemented in a CPU 901.

[0044] The reference data 11 is image data that is the basis of the reference content D to be displayed on the display medium 1. The reference data 11 has a plurality of pixels, and each pixel is associated with a predetermined color. The reference data 11 corresponds to the reference content D.

[0045] The converted data 12 is data obtained by converting the color of the reference data 11 while maintaining the same composition. Although only one converted data 12 is shown in Fig. 6, there may be multiple converted data 12. The converted data 12 corresponds to the converted content J.

[0046] The manufacturing data 13 is data for manufacturing the display medium 1 that displays the reference content D corresponding to the reference data 11 in a first direction and the converted content J corresponding to the converted data 12 in a second direction. In the first embodiment, the manufacturing data 13 may be data for manufacturing each of the upper layer Lu and the lower layer Lb. The display medium 1 is manufactured by overlapping the upper layer Lu and the lower layer Lb.

[0047] The manufacturing data 13 is data that specifies the structure and color of the display medium 1. When the display medium 1 is manufactured by printing using a printing machine, the manufacturing data 13 is data that is input to the printing machine. In the first embodiment, the manufacturing data 13 associates the position and color of printing on the transparent member. In the example shown in FIG. 5 , the manufacturing data 13 associates the colors to be assigned to each of the color regions G11, G12, G21, G22, G23, G24, G25, and G26 for each cell. The manufacturing data 13 further specifies the position where the marker Vu is provided on the upper surface layer Lu and the position where the marker Vb is provided on the lower surface layer Lb.

[0048] The cell color data 31 is data on the color to be expressed in each cell of the display medium 1. The cell color data 31 is provided for each direction in which the display medium 1 displays content. In the first embodiment, the cell color data 31 associates the color to be expressed in each cell with the reference content D, the first converted content Ja, and the second converted content Jb to be displayed in the first to third directions, respectively.

[0049] The condition data 32 is data that specifies the azimuth angle and elevation angle at which the content is displayed on the display medium 1 .

[0050] The shape data 33 specifies the position and size of each cell and pixel of the display medium 1. The shape data 33 specifies, for example, the position and size of the upper surface cells Cu arranged on the upper surface layer Lu of the display medium 1, the position and size of each lower surface cell Cb arranged on the lower surface layer Lb, and the position and size of each pixel.

[0051] The acquisition unit 21 acquires the reference data 11. The acquisition unit 21 may acquire the reference data 11, for example, from the user terminal 2 or the like via a communication network, or may acquire the reference data 11 from a storage medium or the like that is accessible by the processing device 10.

[0052] The conversion unit 22 converts the reference data 11 into converted data 12 that has the same composition but converted colors. When the display medium 1 displays three or more contents, the conversion unit 22 generates converted data 12 that is the number of contents displayed by the display medium 1 minus 1 as the content corresponding to the reference data 11.

[0053] The conversion unit 22 uses a predetermined function to convert the color of each pixel of the reference data 11 into the color of each pixel of the conversion data 12. For example, a case will be described in which the color of each pixel of the reference data 11 is specified by three elements, R (red), G (green), and B (blue), and the conversion unit 22 generates two pieces of conversion data 12.

[0054] The conversion unit 22 converts the R value of each pixel of the reference data 11 into the B value of each pixel of the first conversion data 12a, converts the G value of each pixel of the reference data 11 into the R value of each pixel of the first conversion data 12a, and converts the B value of each pixel of the reference data 11 into the G value of each pixel of the first conversion data 12a, thereby generating the first conversion data 12a. The conversion unit 22 also converts the R value of each pixel of the reference data 11 into the G value of each pixel of the second conversion data 12b, converts the G value of each pixel of the reference data 11 into the B value of each pixel of the second conversion data 12b, and converts the B value of each pixel of the reference data 11 into the R value of each pixel of the second conversion data 12b, thereby generating the second conversion data 12b.

[0055] Through this process, the processing device 10 can obtain three image data sets with different colors.

[0056] The conversion data 12 may be generated by other methods. For example, the conversion unit 22 may convert each RGB value of each pixel into an HSV (Hue, Saturation, Chroma, Value, Brightness) color space and change each value. The conversion unit 22 may also generate the conversion data 12 by changing the hue value of each pixel by adding or subtracting a predetermined value to or from the hue value.

[0057] Once the reference data 11 and the conversion data 12 are identified, the manufacturing data 13 is generated. The generation unit 23 generates the manufacturing data 13 for manufacturing the display medium 1 that displays the reference content D corresponding to the reference data 11 in a first direction and the converted content J corresponding to the conversion data 12 in a second direction.

[0058] The generation unit 23 generates manufacturing data 13 for manufacturing a display medium 1 that displays reference content D corresponding to reference data 11 in a first direction and converted content J corresponding to converted data 12 in a second direction. The generation unit 23 includes a calculation unit 36 and an allocation unit 37.

[0059] The calculation unit 36 calculates each RGB value of the color to be displayed in each cell for content to be displayed in each direction. When the display medium 1 displays reference content D corresponding to reference data 11 and two converted contents J corresponding to two converted data 12, the calculation unit 36 calculates the color to be expressed in each cell for the reference data 11 and the two converted data 12. The calculation unit 36 divides the reference data 11 into sections corresponding to each cell of the display medium 1 and identifies the color to be expressed in each cell of the reference data 11. The two converted data 12 are processed in the same manner.

[0060] The allocation unit 37 allocates colors to each pixel of the top cell Cu and the bottom cell Cb so that, for each cell, reference content D corresponding to reference data 11 is displayed in the first direction, and converted content J corresponding to converted data 12 is displayed in the second direction. When the display medium 1 displays three contents, the allocation unit 37 allocates colors to each pixel of the top cell Cu and the bottom cell Cb so that, for each cell, reference content D corresponding to reference data 11 is displayed in the first direction, first converted content Ja corresponding to first converted data 12a is displayed in the second direction, and second converted content Jb corresponding to second converted data 12b is displayed in the third direction.

[0061] For example, for each cell, the allocation unit 37 searches for a color for each pixel such that a combination of pixels viewed from a first direction achieves a color corresponding to a first direction in the cell color data 31, a combination of pixels viewed from a second direction achieves a color corresponding to a second direction in the cell color data 31, and a combination of pixels viewed from a third direction achieves a color corresponding to a third direction in the cell color data 31. The allocation unit 37 may perform a brute-force search or a search by optimization. For example, the allocation unit 37 sets, as targets, RGB values to be displayed in the first direction, RGB values to be displayed in the second direction, and RGB values to be displayed in the third direction. The allocation unit 37 sets, as an evaluation function, the differences between the RGB values to be displayed in the first direction, the RGB values to be displayed in the second direction, and the RGB values to be displayed in the third direction, which are realized by the colors of each searched pixel, and the targets. The allocation unit 37 determines a color to be assigned to each pixel so that the evaluation function is minimized.

[0062] At this time, the allocation unit 37 refers to the condition data 32 and the shape data 33 as the specifications of the display medium 1 .

[0063] The allocation unit 37 may further provide markers Vu and Vb on the upper layer Lu and the lower layer Lb, respectively, so that the markers Vu and Vb overlap when the display medium 1 displays the reference content D in a first direction and the converted content J in a second direction. The shapes of the markers Vu and Vb are preferably such that they can identify the front and back sides and orientations of each layer, as well as the placement position on the upper or lower surface. The marker Vu on the upper layer Lu and the marker Vb on the lower layer Lb may share some parts and differ some parts, and different parts of each marker may distinguish between the upper layer Lu and the lower layer Lb. The user may distinguish between the upper layer Lu and the lower layer Lb based on the different parts of the markers Vu and Vb, and manufacture the display medium 1 by overlaying the upper layer Lu on the lower layer Lb so that the common parts overlap.

[0064] After determining the color to be assigned to each pixel of each cell, the assignment unit 37 outputs the manufacturing data 13 .

[0065] Referring to FIG. 7, a processing method according to the present disclosure will be described.

[0066] First, in step S1, the user terminal 2 transmits the reference data 11 to the processing device 10. The processing device 10 acquires the reference data 11.

[0067] In step S2, the processing device 10 generates converted data 12 from the reference data 11. In step S3, the processing device 10 generates manufacturing data 13 for the display medium 1 that displays the reference content D corresponding to the reference data 11 and the converted content J corresponding to the converted data 12 in different directions.

[0068] In step S4, the processing device 10 transmits the manufacturing data 13 to the user terminal 2. Upon acquiring the manufacturing data 13, the user terminal 2 manufactures the display medium 1 from the manufacturing data 13 in step S5. Specifically, the user inputs the manufacturing data 13 into a printing machine to print the upper surface layer Lu and the lower surface layer Lb. The user can manufacture the display medium 1 by overlaying the upper surface layer Lu on the lower surface layer Lb.

[0069] The display medium 1 according to the first embodiment can display content with the same composition but different colors in different directions. By changing the orientation of the display medium 1 relative to the user, the display medium 1 can display content decorated with a variety of colors to the user.

[0070] Furthermore, the processing device 10 according to the first embodiment can generate manufacturing data 13 for manufacturing the display medium 1 from any reference data acquired from the user terminal 2 or the like, and transmit the data to the user terminal 2. This allows the display medium 1 to display any content, such as a drawing by a child, as content decorated with a variety of colors.

[0071] Second Embodiment In the first embodiment, a case where a display medium is formed using the technology described in Patent Document 3 has been described. In the second embodiment, a case where a display medium 100 is formed using the technology described in Patent Document 2 will be described.

[0072] The display medium 100 according to the second embodiment displays content decorated with a variety of colors. The display medium 100 displays three pieces of content corresponding to three azimuth angles from a predetermined elevation angle and azimuth angle. The three pieces of content are a reference content D corresponding to the reference data 11 and two converted contents J that have the same composition as the reference data 11 but have been color-converted.

[0073] As shown in FIG. 8 , in the second embodiment, the display medium 100 has a plurality of cells C on its surface. As shown in FIG. 9 , each cell C has a light-blocking protruding member and a color region on its surface. The cells C are formed so that the color regions that are perceived are different when viewed from first to third directions, which are different from each other. Here, "different color regions" means that the color regions are not completely identical, and includes not only completely different cases but also cases where the color regions are at least partially the same and partially different. The display medium 100 displays reference content D in a first direction in a portion of each cell viewed from a first viewpoint in a first direction. The reference content D is formed in each pixel of each cell viewed from the first viewpoint. The display medium 100 displays first converted content Ja in a second direction in a portion of each cell viewed from a second viewpoint in a second direction. The first converted content Ja is formed in each pixel of each cell viewed from the second viewpoint. The display medium 100 displays the second converted content Jb in the third direction in a portion of each cell seen from a third viewpoint in the third direction. The second converted content Jb is formed by each pixel of each cell seen from the third viewpoint.

[0074] As shown in Fig. 8, the display medium 100 includes a substrate 101 and a coloring portion 102 that displays the color of the content on the upper surface of the substrate 101. The substrate 101 has a surface that reflects light. The substrate 101 may be in the form of a thin sheet such as paper, or may have a three-dimensional shape. The upper surface of the substrate 101 may be flat or curved.

[0075] The upper surface of the substrate 101 is divided into a plurality of cells C. The plurality of cells C may be disposed adjacent to each other or may be disposed apart from each other.

[0076] As shown in Fig. 9, one cell C includes a plurality of subcells K0, K1, and K2. Protruding members T0, T1, and T2 are formed in the subcells K0, K1, and K2, respectively, corresponding to a predetermined azimuth angle. The protruding member T0 is formed in the subcell K0. The protruding member T1 is formed in the subcell K1. The protruding member T2 is formed in the subcell K2.

[0077] The protruding members T0, T1, and T2 are formed of a light-blocking material and have a surface in a predetermined azimuthal direction, more specifically, a surface parallel to the azimuthal angle corresponding to the subcell in which the protruding member is formed.

[0078] This allows the colored portion of the subcell corresponding to the predetermined azimuth angle to be observed from a predetermined elevation angle and azimuth angle.

[0079] For example, when a user observes a certain coordinate on the display medium 100 at a predetermined elevation angle ω0 and an azimuth angle φ0, the user can see the color value of the coordinate of the first content corresponding to the coordinate. Similarly, when the user observes the coordinate at a predetermined elevation angle ω1 and an azimuth angle φ1, the user can see the color value of the coordinate of the second content, which is different from the first content, corresponding to the coordinate. Furthermore, when the user observes the coordinate at a predetermined elevation angle ω2 and an azimuth angle φ2, the user can see the color value of the coordinate of the third content, which is different from the first content and the second content, corresponding to the coordinate. Note that although the elevation angles ω0, ω1, and ω2 are not shown in FIG. 9 , they may be the same elevation angle or different elevation angles relative to the display medium 100.

[0080] In the second embodiment, a case will be described in which the reference content D is displayed at an azimuth angle φ0, the first converted content Ja is displayed at an azimuth angle φ2, and the second converted content Jb is displayed at an azimuth angle φ3 as shown in Fig. 9, but the present invention is not limited to this. The correspondence between the azimuth angles and the content to be displayed is determined appropriately.

[0081] Referring to Figure 9, cell C at coordinate x will be described. Cell C includes subcells K0, K1, and K2. Subcell K0 corresponds to azimuth angle φ0. Subcell K1 corresponds to azimuth angle φ1. Subcell K2 corresponds to azimuth angle φ2. Three protruding members T0 are arranged in subcell K0, parallel to the direction of azimuth angle φ0. Two protruding members T1 are arranged in subcell K1, parallel to the direction of azimuth angle φ1. Three protruding members T2 are arranged in subcell K2, parallel to the direction of azimuth angle φ2.

[0082] Because the protruding members T have a predetermined height, when the display medium 100 is observed from a certain elevation angle, some portions of the surface of the display medium 100 are blocked by the protruding members T and some are not. When observed from an azimuth angle φ0, a user can see the colored portion 102 of the subcell K0, where the protruding member T0 parallel to the azimuth angle φ0 is formed, but the colored portions 102 of the other subcells K1 or K2 are difficult to see. When observed from an azimuth angle φ1, a user can see the colored portion 102 of the subcell K1, where the protruding member T1 parallel to the azimuth angle φ1 is formed, but the colored portions 102 of the other subcells K0 or K2 are difficult to see. When observed from an azimuth angle φ2, a user can see the colored portion 102 of the subcell K2, where the protruding member T2 parallel to the azimuth angle φ2 is formed, but the colored portions 102 of the other subcells K0 or K1 are difficult to see.

[0083] The display medium 100 according to the second embodiment can display three different contents in three different directions. The display medium 100 can display reference content D at a first viewpoint at an azimuth angle φ0 in pixels visible from the first viewpoint. The display medium 100 can display first converted content Ja at a second viewpoint at an azimuth angle φ1 in pixels visible from the second viewpoint. The display medium 100 can display second converted content Jb at a third viewpoint at an azimuth angle φ2 in pixels visible from the third viewpoint.

[0084] In the second embodiment, when viewed from a specific azimuth angle, it is ideal for the user to be able to see each pixel of the colored portion 102 of the subcell that corresponds to that azimuth angle, but not be able to see each pixel of the colored portion 102 of the subcell that does not correspond to that azimuth angle; however, this may not always be the case.

[0085] FIG. 10 is a diagram illustrating an example of shielded and exposed pixels in the display medium 100. Consider the case where a protruding member T1 is formed in a subcell K1 as shown in FIG. 10 . When a user observes from a direction at an azimuth angle φ1 parallel to the protruding member T1, almost all of the pixels in the subcell K1 are visible. However, a shielded portion K1a is formed, which is a pixel that is not observed despite being located in the subcell K1. Furthermore, an exposed portion K2b may be formed, which is a pixel that is observed despite being located in a subcell K2 that does not correspond to the azimuth angle φ1. Therefore, in the processing of the assignment unit 37 described below, a group of pixels visible for each viewpoint is identified, and a color is assigned to the identified pixel group so that it is displayed at that viewpoint.

[0086] Next, the processing device 10 that assigns colors to each pixel of the display medium 100 will be described.

[0087] The processing apparatus 10 according to the second embodiment has the same configuration as the processing apparatus 10 according to the first embodiment described with reference to FIG.

[0088] In the second embodiment, the manufacturing data 13 associates the position and shape of the protruding member T formed on the surface of the base material 101 with the position and color of printing on the surface of the base material 101. The manufacturing device is, for example, a 3D printer or the like that can also form the protruding member T.

[0089] In the second embodiment, the condition data 32 is data that specifies the azimuth angle and elevation angle at which content is displayed on the display medium 100. The shape data 33 specifies the position and shape of each cell and each sub-cell on the display medium 100, the position and shape of the protruding member T to be placed in each sub-cell, and the like.

[0090] The allocation unit 37 allocates colors to each pixel in the cell to be processed so that pixels visible from a first viewpoint in the cell to be processed display the color of the position of the cell to be processed in the converted content J, pixels visible from a second viewpoint in the cell to be processed display the color of the position of the cell to be processed in the first converted content Ja, and pixels visible from a third viewpoint in the cell to be processed display the color of the position of the cell to be processed in the second converted content Jb. The pixels to be allocated colors here are those in the cell to be processed where no protruding members are formed.

[0091] The allocation unit 37 identifies, from among the pixels in the cell to be processed, a group of pixels that are visible from a first viewpoint, a group of pixels that are visible from a second viewpoint, and a group of pixels that are visible from a third viewpoint. For example, in the example of Figure 10, the pixels that are visible when viewed from the azimuth angle φ1 include the exposed portion K2b in the subcell K2, but do not include the occluded portion K1a in the subcell K1.

[0092] The allocation unit 37 allocates a predetermined color to each pixel in each pixel group so that the color to be displayed in each direction can be expressed in the cell to be processed.

[0093] The processing device 10 repeats the process of assigning a color to each pixel for each cell, and outputs the correspondence between the pixel and the color in each cell as manufacturing data 13. The manufacturing data 13 also includes the position and shape of the protruding member T specified by the shape data 33. By inputting the manufacturing data 13 into a manufacturing device such as a printer, a display medium 100 is output in which each pixel is colored in an appropriate color.

[0094] The display medium 100 according to the second embodiment, like the display medium 1 according to the first embodiment, can display to the user content decorated with a wide variety of colors.

[0095] (Technology A) A display medium capable of displaying two contents corresponding to two azimuth angles at a predetermined elevation angle, the display medium comprising: a light-reflecting substrate; the substrate is divided into a plurality of cells; each of the plurality of cells is divided into three sub-cells corresponding to the two azimuth angles; a protruding member having a surface in the direction of the predetermined azimuth angle that blocks light is formed in each sub-cell corresponding to the predetermined azimuth angle; the sub-cell corresponding to the predetermined azimuth angle is observed from the predetermined elevation angle and azimuth angle; a reference content is displayed at a pixel of the plurality of pixels that can be seen from a first viewpoint; and a converted content that has the same composition as the reference content but has a converted color is displayed at a pixel of the plurality of pixels that can be seen from a second viewpoint.

[0096] (Technology B) A processing device that assigns colors to each pixel of a display medium described in Technology A, wherein the display medium has a plurality of cells, and the processing device comprises: an acquisition unit that acquires reference data; a conversion unit that converts the reference data into converted data that has the same composition but has converted colors; a calculation unit that calculates each color to be displayed in a specified cell from the reference data and the converted data; an allocation unit that assigns colors to each pixel in the specified cell so that the color calculated for the reference data is displayed in the pixel seen from the first viewpoint in the specified cell, and the color calculated for the converted content is displayed in the pixel seen from the second viewpoint in the specified cell; and a generation unit that generates manufacturing data for manufacturing a display medium that displays the colors assigned by the allocation unit.

[0097] 11 is a perspective view of a display medium 200 according to a third embodiment. In the first embodiment, a case where the display medium is formed using the technique described in Patent Document 3 has been described. In the third embodiment, a case where the display medium 200 is formed using the technique described in Patent Document 4 will be described.

[0098] The display medium 200 according to the third embodiment displays content decorated with a variety of colors. The display medium 200 displays three pieces of content corresponding to three azimuth angles from a predetermined elevation angle and azimuth angle.

[0099] In the third embodiment, a display medium 200 has a plurality of cells C on its surface. The cells C radially divide the space above the cells C into three directions and include partitions with color regions. The cells C are formed so that the color regions that are perceived are different when viewed from each of the first, second, and third directions. Here, "different color regions" means that the color regions are not completely identical, and includes not only completely different cases but also cases where the color regions are at least partially the same and partially different. The display medium 200 displays reference content D in a first direction in a portion of each cell viewed from a first viewpoint in a first direction. The reference content D is formed in each pixel of each cell viewed from the first viewpoint. The display medium 200 displays first converted content Ja in a second direction in a portion of each cell viewed from a second viewpoint in a second direction. The first converted content Ja is formed in each pixel of each cell viewed from the second viewpoint. The display medium 200 displays the second converted content Jb in the third direction in a portion of each cell seen from a third viewpoint in the third direction. The second converted content Jb is formed by each pixel of each cell seen from the third viewpoint.

[0100] 11 , the display medium 200 includes a substrate 201. The substrate 201 may be in the form of a thin sheet such as paper, or may have a three-dimensional shape. The upper surface of the substrate 201 may be flat or curved.

[0101] The upper surface of the substrate 101 is divided into a plurality of cells C. The plurality of cells may be disposed adjacent to each other or may be disposed apart from each other.

[0102] Fig. 12(a) is a front view of a partition P used in the display medium 200. Fig. 12(b) is a right side view of the partition P. One partition P is provided for one cell C. The partition P is a surface formed on a plane intersecting with the base material 201, and has a portion that is exposed when the display medium 200 is observed from each of three directions. The partition P has a plurality of pixels on its surface.

[0103] 13 is a cross-sectional view of a partition P used in the display medium 200. As shown in FIG. 13, the partition P is formed so as to radially divide the space on the cell C in three directions from a point CS on the cell C. In the third embodiment, the partition P divides the space on the cell C into a first viewpoint, a second viewpoint, and a third viewpoint on the X axis above the display medium 200. The partition P may be provided so as to be in contact with the outer edge of the cell C and not to be connected to the partition of an adjacent cell. Alternatively, the partition P may be provided so as to be connected to the partition of an adjacent cell C.

[0104] The skeleton of the partition P is a part of a Voronoi surface in a Voronoi diagram with points virtually set in each of the three directions as generating points.

[0105] The display medium 200 has a plurality of pixels on the surface of the partition P. The display medium 200 displays reference content D in pixels of the plurality of pixels that are visible from a first viewpoint. The display medium 200 displays first converted content Ja in pixels of the plurality of pixels that are visible from a second viewpoint. The display medium 200 displays second converted content Jb in pixels of the plurality of pixels that are visible from a third viewpoint.

[0106] The shape of the partition P will be described with reference to FIG. 13 . In the third embodiment, a Voronoi diagram is virtually formed for a generating point virtually positioned in the direction in which the content is displayed. The partition P includes a Voronoi surface in the Voronoi diagram as its skeleton. The partition P is obtained by adding flesh to the Voronoi surface that is the skeleton. The surface of the partition P includes a surface parallel to the Voronoi surface.

[0107] 13, three viewpoints E1, E2, and E3 are provided. Generator points H1, H2, and H3 are provided on the line of sight when viewing the center Cs of cell C from each of the viewpoints E1, E2, and E3. Generator points H1, H2, and H3 are provided on a virtual sphere of a predetermined radius centered at the center Cs of cell C.

[0108] The partition P has two shielding members W1 and W2. The shielding members W1 and W2 divide the space above the cell C in which the partition P is installed into three regions.

[0109] The shielding member W1 has a skeleton of the Voronoi surface Q1 and is fleshed out to a thickness of 1. The shielding member W2 has a skeleton of the Voronoi surface Q2 and is fleshed out to a thickness of 1. The tip of the shielding member W1 is formed into a circle with a radius of 1.

[0110] The shielding member W1 divides the space above the cell C into a space A1 corresponding to the viewpoint E1 and a space A2 corresponding to the viewpoint E2. The shielding member W2 divides the space above the cell C into a space A2 corresponding to the viewpoint E2 and a space A3 corresponding to the viewpoint E2.

[0111] A portion of the surface of the partition P that is exposed when the display medium 200 is observed from a predetermined one of three specified directions has a portion that is blocked when the display medium 200 is observed from a direction other than the predetermined one of the three specified directions. Even if a pixel F on the surface of the partition P is exposed in one or more of the three directions, it may not be visible from the other specified directions. The surface of the partition P expresses the color of the content corresponding to the direction of exposure. This allows the display medium 200 to express portions of different content in multiple specified directions, making it possible to display multiple content with a wide color gamut and high brightness.

[0112] 13 , the surface of shielding member W1 on the space A1 side is visible from viewpoint E1, but has portions that are not visible from viewpoint E2 or viewpoint E3. The surface of shielding member W1 on the space A2 side is visible from viewpoint E2, but has portions that are not visible from viewpoint E1 or viewpoint E3. The surface of shielding member W2 on the space A2 side is visible from viewpoint E2, but has portions that are not visible from viewpoint E1 or viewpoint E3. The surface of shielding member W2 on the space A3 side is visible from viewpoint E3, but has portions that are not visible from viewpoint E1 or viewpoint E2.

[0113] Each surface of partition P is formed to be easily visible from one of three directions and difficult to see from the other two directions. Each surface of partition P has both the effect of emitting a color that forms content in one direction and the effect of blocking from other directions. This allows display medium 200 to display different content in three directions. Furthermore, display medium 200 can display content with a wide color gamut and high brightness in three directions. Each surface of partition P is suppressed from the influence of lines of sight from directions other than the specified direction, so that a suitable color can be given to the surface observed from the specified direction.

[0114] Next, a description will be given of a processing device that assigns colors to each pixel of the display medium 200. The processing device has a configuration similar to that of the processing device 10 according to the first embodiment shown in FIG.

[0115] In the third embodiment, the manufacturing data 13 associates the position and shape of the partition P formed on the surface of the base material 201 with the position and color of printing on the surface of the partition P. The manufacturing device is, for example, a 3D printer or the like that can also form the partition P.

[0116] In the third embodiment, the condition data 32 is data that specifies the azimuth angle and elevation angle at which content is displayed on the display medium 200. The shape data 33 specifies the position, shape, etc. of each cell and each partition P on the display medium 200.

[0117] The processing of the allocation unit 37 in the third embodiment is similar to the processing of the allocation unit 37 in the second embodiment.

[0118] The processing device 10 repeats the process of assigning a color to each pixel for each cell, and outputs the correspondence between the pixel and the color in each cell as manufacturing data 13. By inputting the manufacturing data 13 into a manufacturing device such as a printer, a display medium 200 is output in which each pixel is colored in an appropriate color.

[0119] The display medium 200 according to the third embodiment, like the display medium according to the first or second embodiment, can display to the user content decorated with a wide variety of colors.
