Description

[0001] Personal care concentrates Field of the invention The present invention relates to concentrate compositions for diluting with water to form an end-use personal care composition. Background of the invention Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental issues and the personal care industry is a huge contributor to the problem. Most of the packaging used in the industry is single use plastic packaging which ends up in landfill and can take up to 450 years to breakdown. In addition, there is a high carbon footprint associated with the production and shipping of plastic packaging. Not surprisingly, conscious consumers are looking for opportunities to reduce plastic consumption and waste. Recycling single-use plastics is not necessarily the answer because the rates of recycling personal care waste are low and this does not solve the problems associated with plastic production and shipping. Efforts have therefore been made to produce personal care products in concentrate form without the need for single- use and non-recyclable / non-biodegradable plastics that the consumer can convert into an end usable product simply by adding water. However, existing concentrates have their limitations. Whilst consumers are keen to do more for the planet, they are less keen to compromise on product quality and user experience, such as mild and moisturising products that feel nice to use. For example, for the solid format synthetic detergent bars (also known as syndet bars), water is added to create foam on the product and lather is used on the hair and skin. The problem is that it generates mess, the product diminishes with use and therefore user experience is not consistent each time the product is used, and the feel of the product is less appealing than the norm of applying a liquid to the hair or skin. Consumer adoption has therefore been limited. There are also powdered / granular format concentrates to which water can be added by the consumer to create an end usable product, in, for example, a reusable bottle. However, adding water to such concentrates often results in a product that is drying on the skin (typically the most effective and cost-effective emollients and humectants are in liquid form), produce an opaque product sue to powdered humectants often impacting on the clarity of the finished product and has poor stability. A further difficulty in formulating powder concentrates is identifying preservatives that will be effective when the product is hydrated. Attempts have also been made to produce concentrates in liquid form but the degree of concentration has been limited such that the liquid concentrate is still of a volume that requires waterproof and low weight packaging for safe and efficient shipping. Such packaging is typically made of single-use plastic. Other packaging materials such as aluminium and glass have significant carbon footprints associated with their manufacture, transport and recycling. Another limitation of liquid concentrates is the ability to formulate a concentrate with a viscosity low enough to allow ease of filling by a machine during manufacturing and ease of cleaning said machine whilst also having the properties to generate a viscous product having good skin feel after the addition of water by the consumer. Often manufacturers of either form of concentrate (liquid or powder) find considerable difficulty in formulating to achieve a viscosity typical in the personal wash market (3000-6000 cP) on the addition of water. This difficulty has been addressed by incorporating a special pump on a reusable bottle that delivers an aerated foam, rather than a liquid. Whilst this allows the manufacturer to ignore the issue of a resultant product and produce a diluted product with a viscosity close to that of water, the applications are limited as showering or shampooing with a foam requires significant changes in consumer behaviour and foaming pumps are typically difficult to recycle. Concentrates encapsulated in water-soluble films such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA or PVOH) and biofilms derived from pea protein or seaweed have been utilised in the laundry and dishwashing industries. However, such concentrates are not required to be dilutable to form an end usable product suitable for application to the hair and skin with excellent sensory benefits. For example, when it comes to personal care concentrates, it is important to consider the ability to create an end use composition which is physically and microbiologically stable and which has the desired viscosity, pH, cleansing and moisturising properties. Water soluble pods containing e.g. a body wash or shampoo do exist but they are single use products and do not contain a concentrate: in other words a single pod of product is required for each hair wash or more than one pod in the case of showering which proves expensive and creates storage problems in the bathroom as the pods have a tendency to stick together in humid atmospheres. There is therefore an unmet need to provide concentrate compositions free of non- recyclable / non-biodegradable plastic packaging that can be diluted with water (e.g. in a re-usable bottle) to form an end-use personal care / hygiene composition which is stable and which has the desired viscosity, pH, cleansing and moisturising properties. In terms of stability, it must be physically and microbiologically stable in both its concentrated form during manufacture and the supply chain and also once made up by the consumer with water and stored at home. Summary of the invention Accordingly, in a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a kit of compositions for forming a personal care composition, the kit comprising: i) a first composition, wherein the first composition is a liquid or gel and comprises one or more emollient, and one or more antimicrobial agent, wherein the first composition is contained within a water-soluble capsule; and ii) a second composition, wherein the second composition is a powder and comprises one or more anionic surfactant, and one or more amphoteric surfactant. The applicant has found that a physically and microbiologically stable personal care composition having desirable viscosity, clarity, pH, cleansing and moisturising properties can be formed when the above-mentioned liquid and powder compositions are combined with water. Further advantageously, the liquid / gel composition can be contained effectively within a water-soluble capsule until such a time that a personal care composition is required to be formed and the capsule is in contact with water. Therefore, the applicant has developed a concentrate that is able to form a desirable personal care composition without the need for single-use and non-recyclable / non- biodegradable plastic packaging. In another aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of using the kit according to the invention, the method comprising mixing together the first and second compositions with water to form a personal care composition. In another aspect of the invention, there is provided a use of the kit according to the invention to improve viscosity of a personal care composition, improve stability of a personal care composition, improve cleansing abilities of a personal care composition, improve moisturising abilities of a personal care composition, improve clarity of a personal care composition, reduce skin dryness, reduce plastic waste, reduce transport costs and / or reduce storage space requirements. In another aspect of the invention, there is provided a kit comprising: (i) a liquid or gel composition comprising one or more emollient, and one or more antimicrobial agent, wherein the liquid or gel composition is contained within a water-soluble capsule; and (ii) instructions for using the liquid or gel composition with a powder composition, the powder composition comprising one or more anionic surfactant, and one or more amphoteric surfactant. In another aspect of the invention, there is provided a kit comprising: (i) a powder composition comprising one or more anionic surfactant, and one or more amphoteric surfactant; and (ii) instructions for using the powder composition with a liquid or gel composition, the liquid or gel composition comprising one or more emollient, and one or more antimicrobial agent, wherein the liquid or gel composition is contained within a water-soluble capsule. In another aspect of the invention, there is provided a product for diluting with water to form a personal care composition, comprising a water-soluble capsule, wherein the water-soluble capsule comprises: (i) a first compartment containing a first composition, wherein the first composition is a liquid or gel and comprises one or more emollient, one or more antimicrobial agent; and (ii) a second compartment containing a second composition, wherein the second composition is a powder and comprises one or more anionic surfactant, and one or more amphoteric surfactant. The applicant has found that the liquid / gel and powder compositions can be contained separately and effectively within a single water-soluble capsule until such a time that a personal care composition is required to be formed and the capsule is in contact with water. In another aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of making a personal care composition, the method comprising adding water to the product according to the invention. In another aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of using the product according to the invention, the method comprising adding water to the product to form a personal care composition. In another aspect of the invention, there is a provided a personal care composition obtainable by diluting the product according to the invention with water. In another aspect of the invention, there is provided a personal care composition comprising / consisting of: one or more emollient; one or more antimicrobial agent; one or more anionic surfactant; one or more amphoteric surfactant; and water made up to 100% by weight based on weight of the composition.
