Description

Ultra-fine 3D camera device for root canal photography

[0001] The present invention relates to an ultra-fine three-dimensional (3D) camera for root canal photography, and more particularly, to a camera that receives an incident wave from a target object through an optical fiber at an imaging sensor to create a 3D image.

[0002] Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that diagnoses and treats the pulp, located deep within a tooth. Root canal treatment is necessary in cases of severe tooth decay, gum disease, or bacterial infection of the tooth's nerve tissue, the pulp. The treatment involves removing the inflamed tissue and filling the space with a special filling material. The narrow space, called the root canal, must be precisely identified and the infected inflammation completely removed to prevent future problems. If this process is not completed properly, secondary root canal treatment, such as re-root canal treatment or apicoectomy, may be necessary.

[0003] Root canal therapy, which involves treating the delicate and complex structures known as the root canal, is a complex process that requires both meticulous attention and a high level of technical skill. Accurately identifying the canal orifice is crucial during the root canal access process. This allows for the measurement of the length of the root canal before root canal treatment can begin. Rapid and accurate identification of the root canal orifice is crucial for successful root canal treatment.

[0004] Traditionally, a small alveolar mirror (mirror) is used to identify the root canal entrance. The interior of the tooth is visually observed through the alveolar mirror, and a file is used to locate the canal entrance. Traditional methods rely on the practitioner's experience and manual dexterity, requiring considerable time and effort to locate the canal entrance. Recently, microscopes have been used to precisely examine the interior of the root canal. However, microscopes are extremely expensive and prohibitive for private dental practice. Therefore, a magnifying glass-type lens (Loope), which provides minimal magnification, is commonly used. While microscopes typically offer 20x magnification, they are physically limited in directly photographing the narrow and remote interior of the root canal. Because the image is indirectly magnified through the alveolar mirror, image quality is limited and the operator experiences significant eye fatigue. Additionally, it is not easy to find the root canal entrance because the distance from the microscope to the inside of the root canal is more than 60 cm, the location of the root canal entrance varies depending on the tooth, and the structure is complex.

[0005] Conventional oral cameras have an electrical risk factor and a significant foreign body sensation felt by patients because the image acquisition device containing electrical components is directly inserted into the oral cavity.

[0006] Furthermore, conventional intraoral cameras use disposable sanitary plastic wrap as a means of preventing cross-contamination, as the image acquisition device, which includes electrical components, is inserted directly into the oral cavity. However, because intraoral cameras are used inside the oral cavity, sterilization, rather than disinfection, is absolutely essential for infection prevention. While autoclaving, which uses steam heated to high temperatures and pressure, is a method of infection prevention, the materials used in conventional intraoral cameras are not amenable to autoclaving, increasing the risk of infection.

[0007] Additionally, conventional oral cameras cover the image acquisition area with sanitary vinyl, which results in a decrease in image quality.

[0008] To solve the above-mentioned problem, the purpose of the present invention is to provide an ultra-fine 3D camera device that can easily obtain 3D image data in a very narrow area such as the oral cavity using optical fiber.

[0009] Another object of the present invention is to quickly and accurately detect the entrance of the pulp canal and the location of the pulp hole during root canal treatment.

[0010] In addition, another object of the present invention is to resolve electrical risks by obtaining intraoral images using optical fibers that do not pose electrical risks.

[0011] In addition, another object of the present invention is to provide a detachable optical fiber probe to which high-pressure steam sterilization is applicable.

[0045] Hereinafter, an ultra-fine 3D camera device according to the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the attached drawings.

[0046] FIG. 1 is a drawing showing an ultra-fine 3D camera device (100) according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0047] Referring to FIG. 1, the ultra-fine 3D camera device (100) includes a probe (110) configured to allow an optical fiber cable (111) to pass through a probe member (112), an electrical part (130) including a light source (131), an image sensor (132), an electrical circuit board (133), an ON / OFF switch (134), and a first signal connection terminal (135), an optical lens part (120) connected to the probe (110) and including a first lens (122), a second lens (126), a splitter (123), an optical fiber bundle (124), a protective glass film (121), and a lens part case (125), and a battery part (140) including a second signal connection terminal (141), a battery cell (142), and a charging terminal (143).

[0048] Specifically, the probe (110) is configured such that the optical fiber cable (111) passes through the probe member (112). Light irradiated from the light source (131) passes through the optical lens unit (120) and is then transmitted from one end of the optical fiber cable (111) to the other end. A portion of the optical fiber cable (111) protrudes from the end of the probe member (112). Measurement light can be irradiated to a target object through the optical fiber cable (111). The target object may be, for example, a dental structure in the oral cavity of a dental patient, but is not limited thereto, and may be structures used in various fields such as medical, scientific research, industrial inspection, and security. The light reflected from the target object is re-incident to the optical fiber cable (111), and transmitted to the image sensor (132) through the optical lens unit (120). An optical lens (not shown) may be additionally coupled to one end of the optical fiber cable (111). The optical lens may be selected so that the light irradiated from the optical fiber cable (111) has an angle of view of between 60 degrees and 150 degrees. However, the optical lens additionally coupled to the optical fiber cable (111) may be selected from various types according to the needs of a person skilled in the art, and the angle of view at this time may be selected in various ways, such as 90 degrees, 60 degrees, or 120 degrees, depending on the design purpose.

[0049] The probe (110) may require exposure to high-pressure saturated steam, typically at a temperature of approximately 121 degrees Celsius, for a specified period of time to prevent infection and cross-contamination. This process effectively kills bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms, making the probe safe for use in medical procedures such as dental procedures. The probe member (112) for high-pressure steam sterilization may be made of, for example, stainless steel, titanium, tungsten carbide, a nickel-chromium alloy, or a combination thereof.

[0050] The front part (130) includes a light source (131), an image sensor (132), an electric circuit board (133), an ON / OFF switch (134), and a first signal connection terminal (135). The light source (131) can selectively use a multi-wavelength light source such as visible light or invisible light (NIR, SWIR). The light wavelength can be selected in various ways to obtain a desired image. For example, visible light has a wavelength of about 400 to 700 nanometers and is most commonly used as a light source in imaging devices. Near infrared (NIR) has a wavelength in the range of about 700 to 2500 nanometers. Near infrared light can penetrate deeper into materials than visible light, making it useful for viewing through surface layers or examining the internal structure of a target object. This property is useful, for example, for visualizing blood vessels or tissues under the skin. Shortwave infrared (SWIR) has a wavelength ranging from approximately 1,400 to 3,000 nanometers. Its imaging capabilities allow it to see through certain types of materials (such as silicon) that are impervious to visible or near-infrared light, and it can also be used in low-light or dark environments.

[0051] The present invention can obtain various types of information from a target object by selectively using multi-wavelength light sources, including visible and invisible light. For example, some materials reflect specific wavelengths of light differently, providing valuable information about their properties. This facilitates the observation of inflammation, cracks, and other lesions within root canals that are difficult to detect with the naked eye.

[0052] The image sensor (132) may be a phase detection autofocus (PDAF) image sensor or a quad phase detection autofocus (QPDAF) image sensor. A phase detection autofocus (PDAF) image sensor is an autofocus method that operates by dividing and comparing incoming light into pairs of images. Typically, a dedicated autofocus (AF) sensor is used separate from the image sensor. When a pair of images is aligned, the camera recognizes that the image is in focus. PDAF is generally faster and more stable than contrast detection autofocus, especially in bright situations.

[0053] Quad Phase Detection Autofocus (QPDAF) image sensors divide each pixel into four subpixels, each of which can measure the direction of light. Using this information, the camera can estimate the distance between the subject and the lens and focus. Because the system has more data points to use when determining focus, this can potentially significantly improve the accuracy and speed of the autofocus system. QPDAF performs better in bright situations and provides faster and more accurate focusing than PDAF or Dual Pixel AF. Because each pixel is divided into four subpixels, QPDAF imaging sensors can focus on all subjects, even across a wide range of distances.

[0054] The image sensor (132) converts the optical signal formed by color through the optical lens unit (120) into an electrical signal and outputs analog image data. The image sensor (132) uses a phase detection function to obtain phase difference information in the upper and lower directions and left and right directions from the optical fiber cable (111), calculates optical distance information of image data for each structure (e.g., teeth) based on the obtained phase difference information, obtains color-specific image data including the calculated optical distance information, and generates image data from the calculated optical distance information.

[0055] The electric circuit board (133) may include circuit devices for acquiring and processing image data. For example, it may include an image conversion processing unit (451), a storage unit (452), a communication unit (453), a control unit (454), a power unit (455), etc., which are illustrated in FIG. 4 to be described later. A first signal connection terminal (135) is connected to one end of the electric circuit board (133), and the first signal connection terminal (135) may be coupled with a second signal connection terminal (141) of the battery unit (140) to supply power. An ON / OFF switch (134) is electrically connected to the electric circuit board (133) to turn the electric unit (130) on / off. The image conversion processing unit (451) converts analog image data output from the image sensor (132) into color-specific digital image data, and performs signal processing on the converted color-specific digital image data to convert it into color image data and output it. A detailed description of the image conversion processing unit (451) will be described later in FIG. 4.

[0056] The optical lens unit (120) includes a protective glass film (121), a first lens (122), a splitter (123), an optical fiber bundle (124), a lens unit case (125), and a second lens (126). The protective glass film (121) is intended to protect internal components of the optical lens device from external factors such as dust, moisture, and physical damage. A coating may be applied to the surface of the protective glass film (121) to help reduce glare, reflection, and other optical aberrations. Light irradiated from a light source (131) is transmitted to the optical fiber bundle (124) of the optical lens unit (120). The optical fiber bundle (124) is connected to the splitter (123) and serves to split the light from the light source into multiple paths and transmit them. The first lens (122) serves to focus the light. The second lens (126) may be a concave or aspherical lens.

[0057] The battery unit (140) includes a second signal connection terminal (141), a battery cell (142), a charging terminal (143), and a coupling hook (144). The second signal connection terminal (141) serves as an interface that supplies power between the battery unit (140) and the electrical unit (130). It can also transmit information such as battery level, charging status, or other diagnostic data to the control system of the device.

[0058] The battery cell (142) is the primary power source within the battery device. It stores electrical energy that can be used to power the 3D camera device. Depending on the power requirements of the 3D camera device, the battery cell (142) may be a single cell or a collection of smaller cells. Furthermore, depending on the specific application and performance requirements, it may be of various types, such as lithium ion or nickel metal hydride.

[0059] The charging terminal (143) is an interface that supplies power when the battery cell is being charged. During charging, it is connected to an external power source, allowing electrical energy to flow to the battery cell. While FIG. 1 exemplifies a charging method for a 3D camera device that involves electrical connection, both wired and wireless charging are possible, and the charging method may vary depending on the standard or specification.

[0060] The coupling hook (144) is part of the physical mechanism that secures the battery unit. The coupling hook (144) ensures that the battery unit (140) remains firmly attached to the main body (130) in the correct position. It also allows for easy removal and replacement of the battery unit (140) when necessary.

[0061] As illustrated in Fig. 1, a wired connection may be achieved using a wired connection cable (152). One end of the wired connection cable (152) includes a signal connection terminal, and the other end includes a USB connection terminal (153). Image data acquired from the ultra-fine 3D camera device (100) can be transmitted to a computer device or portable device via the USB connection terminal (153).

[0062] FIG. 2 is a drawing showing an ultra-fine 3D camera device (100) and a charger (200) according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0063] Referring to FIG. 2, the ultra-fine 3D camera device (100) can be charged by being coupled with a charger (200) having a holder function. The ultra-fine 3D camera device (100) may have a built-in connector or coupling mechanism that aligns with a corresponding connector of the charger (200). Depending on the design, a physical plug and socket arrangement, a magnetic connection, or even a wireless charging coil is possible. When the ultra-fine 3D camera device (100) is seated on the charger (200), the connectors are aligned, thereby creating an electrical connection or electrical coupling between the ultra-fine 3D device (100) and the charger (200). Here, the electrical connection or electrical coupling means a wireless coupling, but is not limited thereto, and may also include a wired connection. When the ultra-fine 3D camera device (100) and the charger (200) are electrically coupled, the charging terminal (143) of the battery unit (140) is electrically connected to the corresponding terminal in the charger. This allows power to flow from the charger (200) to the battery cell (142) of the micro 3D camera device (100). The charger (200) is designed to control the charging rate so that the battery cell (142) is charged safely and efficiently. The charger (200) not only supplies power, but also serves as a holder for the micro 3D camera device (100). The design of the charger may include a space or slot for safely placing the camera device while charging. This not only ensures proper alignment of the charging connector, but also provides a convenient and safe way to store the device when not in use. The holder may be designed to hold the device in a specific orientation, such as vertical or sideways, depending on design requirements. The charger (200) may include various safety features to protect the battery and the micro 3D camera device. For example, it may include an overcharge protection feature that stops charging when the battery is fully charged, and a thermal management feature that prevents overheating during charging.

[0064] FIG. 3 is a drawing showing a portable video recording device (300) according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0065] Referring to FIG. 3, the probe (310) includes a fiber optic cable (311), a probe handle (312), a probe coupler (313), and a protective glass film (314). The optical lens unit (320) includes a protective glass film (321), a first lens (322), a splitter (323), a second lens unit (324), and an optical fiber bundle (325). A portable device case (330) is connected to the optical lens unit (320) and can accommodate a portable device (340). The portable device (340) includes a light source (341), an image sensor (342), and a display unit (343).

[0066] The probe (310) and the optical lens unit (320) perform the same functions as the probe (110) and the optical lens unit (120) of Fig. 1, and thus a detailed description thereof will be omitted. The portable device (340) may be a portable electronic device such as a tablet PC, a mobile phone, a smart phone, an e-reader, a personal digital assistant (PDA), an enterprise digital assistant (EDA), a digital still camera, a digital video camera, a portable multimedia player (PMP), a personal navigation device (PND), a handheld game console, or the like. The portable device (340) includes a light source (341) and an image sensor (342).

[0067] In this embodiment, the light source (341) preferably uses visible light, but a multi-wavelength light source such as invisible light (NIR, SWIR) may optionally be used. The light from the light source (341) of the portable device (340) passes through the optical lens unit (320) and is then irradiated to the structure via the optical fiber cable (311). Here, the structure may refer to a tooth.

[0068] The optical lens unit (320) detects the reflected light signal reflected from the structure, receives the detected reflected light signal, and analyzes the light signal by color included in the light source. The image sensor (342) converts the light signal formed by color through the optical lens unit into an electrical signal and outputs analog image data.

[0069] The image sensor (342) may use a 2D image sensor included in the portable device (340), but a phase detection auto-focus image sensor or a quad phase detection auto-focus image sensor may be used to acquire a 3D image. Image information input through the 2D image sensor is signal-processed by a processor (not shown) in the portable device (340) and an image is displayed through the display unit (343). When a phase detection auto-focus image sensor or a quad phase detection auto-focus image sensor is used to acquire a 3D image, the image sensor (342) uses a phase detection function to acquire phase difference information in the up-down and left-right directions from the optical fiber cable (311), calculates optical distance information of image data for each structure based on the acquired phase difference information, acquires color-specific imaging data including the calculated optical distance information, and generates image data from the calculated optical distance information.
