[0001] Cross-citation with related applications

[0002] This application claims the benefit of priority from Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0102491, filed August 4, 2023, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.

[0003] Technology field

[0004] The present invention relates to a notching device for notching an electrode of a secondary battery.

[0005] To address environmental pollution caused by the use of petroleum resources and the resulting energy shortage resulting from petroleum depletion, research and development are underway on power generation based on eco-friendly energy sources. In particular, active research is being conducted on secondary batteries, which offer high utility due to their ability to be repeatedly charged and discharged. Research is also being conducted on various aspects of secondary batteries, including their materials, structure, processes, and stability.

[0006] Common types of secondary batteries include nickel-cadmium batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries, lithium-ion batteries, and lithium-ion polymer batteries. These batteries are used in small products such as digital cameras, DVDs, MP3 players, mobile phones, PDAs, portable game devices, power tools, and e-bikes, as well as in larger products requiring high output, such as electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as power storage devices that store surplus generated power or renewable energy, and as backup power storage devices.

[0007] To manufacture these secondary batteries, first, an electrode active material slurry is applied to a positive electrode current collector and a negative electrode current collector to manufacture a positive electrode and a negative electrode, and these are laminated on both sides of a separator to form an electrode assembly of a predetermined shape. Then, the electrode assembly is housed in a battery case, filled with electrolyte, and sealed.

[0008] Secondary batteries are also classified based on the structure of the electrode assembly, which is a stacked structure of a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and a separator interposed between the positive and negative electrodes. Electrode assemblies according to this classification include a jelly-roll type (rolled type) electrode assembly in which long sheet-shaped positive and negative electrodes are rolled up with a separator interposed between them, and a stack type (laminated type) electrode assembly in which a plurality of positive and negative electrodes cut into units of a predetermined size are sequentially stacked with a separator interposed between them. Recently, in order to solve the problems of the jelly-roll type electrode assembly and the stack type electrode assembly, a stack / folding type electrode assembly is also being used, which is a hybrid form of the jelly-roll type and the stack type, in which unit cells in which positive and negative electrodes of predetermined units are rolled up with a separator interposed between them are positioned on a separator film and sequentially rolled up.

[0009] Typically, these secondary batteries are manufactured by applying an electrode mixture containing an electrode active material, a conductive agent, a binder, etc., onto an electrode current collector, drying the mixture, manufacturing the electrode, laminating the manufactured electrode with a separator, and then embedding and sealing the electrode in a battery case together with an electrolyte.

[0010] At this time, the electrode is composed of an electrode sheet including a support portion coated with an electrode active material and a non-coated portion not coated with an electrode active material. In addition, an insulating layer is coated at the end of the support portion, i.e., the starting point of the non-coated portion, to prevent a short circuit phenomenon in which the positive and negative electrodes come into contact due to shrinkage of the separator.

[0011] Electrodes are manufactured by forming electrode tabs on an electrode sheet through a notching process, and then cutting the electrode tabs to a predetermined length. Typically, the electrode tab notching process is performed using a punch and jig that include a cutting portion having a shape corresponding to the electrode tab. Recently, in order to form electrodes with more precise dimensions, a laser has been used.

[0012] However, in the process of notching an electrode using a laser, there was a problem that energy exceeding a certain level was applied to the point of the electrode receiving the laser, causing damage to the surrounding area of the irradiated point or deterioration of the notching quality.

[0013] To compensate for this, a notching device that prevents damage to the surrounding area and deterioration of notching quality while utilizing the laser notching method is required.

[0014] The problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide a notching device that irradiates the same point of an electrode with different laser depths.

[0015] The problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide a notching device that sequentially irradiates lasers through different light sources.

[0016] In a notching device for cutting an electrode that is transported in a certain direction and includes a metal layer, a first insulating layer laminated on an upper surface of the metal layer, and a second insulating layer laminated on a lower surface of the metal layer, the notching device according to an embodiment of the present invention may include a first light source unit located on an upper side of the electrode and irradiating a laser so that the laser passes through the first insulating layer and reaches the metal layer, and a second light source unit located on one side of the first light source unit and irradiating a laser so that the laser passes through the first insulating layer and the metal layer and reaches the lower surface of the second insulating layer.

[0017] The first light source unit and the second light source unit can be arranged sequentially along the transport direction of the electrode.

[0018] The first light source unit irradiates laser while moving along a first path, and the second light source unit irradiates laser while moving along a second path, and the shape of the first path and the shape of the second path may be the same.

[0019] The form of the above second path may be a form in which the form of the above first path has moved a certain distance.

[0020] The first path and the second path may include a first section formed along the transport direction of the electrode, a second section formed diagonally from one end of the first section, a third section formed along the transport direction of the electrode from one end of the second section and formed at a further end of the electrode than the first section, and a fourth section formed diagonally from the third section and connected to the other end of the first section.

[0021] When the first light source unit passes the second section, the second light source unit passes the first section, when the first light source unit passes the third section, the second light source unit passes the second section, when the first light source unit passes the fourth section, the second light source unit passes the third section, and when the first light source unit passes the first section, the second light source unit can pass the fourth section.

[0022] The first light source unit and the second light source unit can sequentially irradiate a laser to create a rough shape on the electrode.

[0023] The first and second paths may include a circular form.

[0024] The second light source unit can irradiate the laser to a point of the electrode to which the first light source unit irradiates the laser.

[0025] A notching device according to an embodiment of the present invention may further include a pattern jig positioned on opposite sides of the first light source unit and the second light source unit with respect to the electrode, and forming a path along which the first light source unit and the second light source unit irradiate a laser.

[0026] The above pattern jig includes a first path formed so that the first light source unit moves along it and irradiates a laser, and a second path formed so that the second light source unit moves along it and irradiates a laser, and the shape of the first path and the shape of the second path are the same, and the shape of the second path may be a shape in which the shape of the first path moves a certain distance.

[0027] The first path and the second path may include a first section formed along the transport direction of the electrode, a second section formed diagonally from one end of the first section, a third section formed along the transport direction of the electrode from one end of the second section and formed at a further end of the electrode than the first section, and a fourth section formed diagonally from the third section and connected to the other end of the first section.

[0028] The first light source unit and the second light source unit can sequentially irradiate a laser to create a rough shape on the electrode.

[0029] The position of the pattern jig is fixed, and the first light source unit and the second light source unit are positioned above the electrode, and a part of the electrode can move between the first light source unit and the second light source unit and the pattern jig.

[0030] According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, by irradiating the same point of the electrode with different laser depths, damage to the surrounding portion of the notching point can be prevented and the notching quality can be further secured.

[0031] According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, by sequentially irradiating lasers through different light sources, the energy used in the laser notching process can be used more effectively.

[0032] In addition, the configurations according to preferred embodiments of the present invention may include effects that can be easily predicted by those skilled in the art.

[0042] In order to clearly explain the present invention, a detailed description of a section that is not related to the description or a related known technology that may unnecessarily obscure the gist of the present invention has been omitted, and when adding reference signs to components of each drawing in this specification, the same or similar reference signs are attached to the same or similar components throughout the specification.

[0043] In addition, terms and words used in this specification and claims should not be interpreted as limited to their usual or dictionary meanings, but should be interpreted as meanings and concepts that conform to the technical idea of the present invention based on the principle that the inventor can appropriately define the concept of the term to explain his or her own invention in the best way.

[0044] Figure 1 is a perspective view of a notching device (1) according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0045] Referring to Fig. 1, a notching device (1) according to an embodiment of the present invention can notch a portion of an electrode (E). For example, the notching device (1) can cut a portion of the electrode (E) by irradiating a laser onto a portion of the electrode (E). Specifically, the notching device (1) is positioned above the electrode (E) and irradiates a laser toward the upper surface of the electrode (E), and the electrode (E) is moved in a certain direction, so that a portion of the electrode (E) can be cut into a certain shape.

[0046] The electrode (E) may include a metal layer (M) formed of a metal material, an active material layer (T) applied to at least one surface of the metal layer (M) for a chemical reaction, and an insulating layer (S1, S2) formed at an end of the active material layer (T) and composed of an insulating material.

[0047] Active material can refer to an active material that generates electrical energy through a chemical reaction of lithium ions. The active material can include a positive electrode active material applied to a positive electrode plate and a negative electrode active material applied to a negative electrode plate.

[0048] The electrode (E) is composed of a support portion coated with an active material and a non-coated portion not coated with an active material, and the insulating layer can be formed at the end of the support portion, i.e., at the beginning of the non-coated portion. In other words, the insulating layer can be applied to the upper and lower surfaces of the non-coated portion at the point where the support portion and the non-coated portion are connected.

[0049] When an active material layer (T) is applied to both surfaces of a metal layer (M), the insulating layer may include a first insulating layer (S1) laminated on the upper surface of the metal layer (M) and a second insulating layer (S2) laminated on the lower surface of the metal layer (M).

[0050] An electrode (E) that is thinly spread through a roll pressing process is manufactured and transported in a certain direction, and a notching device (1) can cut the remaining portions at a certain level except for a portion for grounding a tab on a non-conductive portion where no active material is applied.

[0051] The notching device (1) may include a first light source unit (10) and a second light source unit (11).

[0052] FIG. 2 is a drawing for explaining the operation of a notching device (1) according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0053] Referring to FIG. 2, the first light source unit (10) is positioned above the electrode (E) and can irradiate a laser toward the electrode (E). For example, the first light source unit (10) can irradiate a laser so that the laser passes through the first insulating layer (S1) and reaches the metal layer (M). That is, the first light source unit (10) can irradiate a laser to the electrode (E) so that the laser does not reach the second insulating layer (S2).

[0054] The second light source unit (11) is located on one side of the first light source unit (10) and can irradiate a laser toward the electrode (E). For example, the second light source unit (11) can be located on the upper side of the electrode (E) like the first light source unit (10).

[0055] The first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) can be arranged sequentially along the transport direction of the electrode (E). In other words, the second light source unit (11) can be located in an area moved along the transport direction of the electrode (E) from the first light source unit (10).

[0056] The laser irradiated by the second light source unit (11) can penetrate deeper into the electrode (E) than the laser irradiated by the first light source unit (10). For example, the second light source unit (11) can irradiate the laser so that the laser passes through the first insulating layer (S1) and the metal layer (M) and reaches the lower surface of the second insulating layer (S2).

[0057] This difference in depth of the laser can be controlled by adjusting the parameters of the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11). For example, the parameters may include focusing, power, and frequency.

[0058] In addition, the second light source unit (11) can irradiate the laser to a point on the electrode (E) to which the first light source unit (10) irradiated the laser. In other words, the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) can sequentially irradiate the laser to the same point on the electrode (E).

[0059] Specifically, after the first light source unit (10) irradiates a laser to a specific point of the electrode (E), the electrode (E) is moved a certain distance along the moving direction, and the second light source unit (11) can irradiate a laser again to the specific point to which the first light source unit (10) irradiated the laser.

[0060] That is, in a state where the first light source unit (10) is first irradiated with a laser so that it cuts through the first insulating layer (S1) to a part of the metal layer (M), the second light source unit (11) can be secondarily irradiated with a laser so that it cuts through a part of the remaining metal layer (M) and the second insulating layer (S2).

[0061] More specifically, the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) can irradiate a laser toward the electrode (E) while moving while forming a certain path.

[0062] Figure 3 shows the first path (10a) and the second path (11a) according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0063] Referring to FIG. 3, the first light source unit (10) can irradiate laser while moving along the first path (10a), and the second light source unit (11) can irradiate laser while moving along the second path (11a). Since the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) have the same movement pattern, the shape of the first path (10a) and the shape of the second path (11a) can be the same.

[0064] In addition, since the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) move while being spaced apart from each other by a certain distance, the shape of the second path (11a) may be a shape in which the shape of the first path (10a) has moved by a certain distance. In other words, the first path (10a) and the second path (11a) may be formed by being spaced apart from each other by the distance that the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) are spaced apart from each other.

[0065] Additionally, the first path (10a) and the second path (11a) may form a region in which a portion overlaps. However, the first path (10a) and the second path (11a) do not necessarily overlap each other, and whether they overlap may vary depending on the shape of the electrode (E) cross-section or the notching process.

[0066] The first path (10a) and the second path (11a) may include a circular form. In other words, the first path (10a) and the second path (11a) may include a form that is repeatedly circular.

[0067] FIG. 4 is a diagram showing one of the first path (10a) or the second path (11a) according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0068] Referring to FIG. 4, the first path (10a) and the second path (11a) may include a first section (R1) formed along the transport direction of the electrode (E), a second section (R2) formed diagonally from one end of the first section (R1), a third section (R3) formed along the transport direction of the electrode (E) from one end of the second section and formed at a further end of the electrode (E) than the first section (R1), and a fourth section (R4) formed diagonally from the third section (R3) and connected to the other end of the first section (R1). In this case, the second section (R2) and the fourth section (R4) may be formed to intersect each other.

[0069] That is, the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) can move sequentially through the first section (R1) to the fourth section (R4), and irradiate the laser toward the electrode (E) while repeatedly cycling through the first section (R1) to the fourth section (R4).

[0070] In this case, as previously described, the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) can move sequentially with a time difference from each other. Specifically, when the first light source unit (10) repeatedly moves along the first path (10a), the second light source unit (11) can move in a section before the movement section of the first light source unit (10).

[0071] For example, when the first light source unit (10) passes the second section (R2), the second light source unit (11) can pass the first section (R1), and when the first light source unit (10) passes the third section (R3), the second light source unit (11) can pass the second section (R2). Similarly, when the first light source unit (10) passes the fourth section (R4), the second light source unit (11) can pass the third section (R3), and when the first light source unit (10) passes the first section (R1), the second light source unit (11) can pass the fourth section (R4).

[0072] Additionally, considering the transport speed of the electrode (E), the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) can irradiate the laser while moving in the second section (R2) or the fourth section (R4) so that the electrode (E) is cut in the direction in which the metal layer (M) is formed protruding from the active material layer (T), i.e., in the width direction of the electrode (E).

[0073] That is, when the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) pass through the second section (R2), the electrode (E) can be cut along the direction in which the metal layer (M) protrudes from the active material layer (T). Conversely, when the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) pass through the fourth section (R4), the electrode (E) can be cut in the opposite direction to the direction in which the metal layer (M) protrudes.

[0074] Additionally, when the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) pass through the first section (R1) or the third section (R3), the electrode (E) can be cut in a direction parallel to the transport direction of the electrode (E).

[0075] Figure 5 is a plan view of a notching device (1) according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0076] Referring to Fig. 5, according to the irradiation method of the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) according to the first path (10a) and the second path (11a), the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) can sequentially irradiate the laser so as to create a protruding shape on the electrode (E) while moving along the first path (10a) and the second path (11a). That is, a protruding portion formed at a regular interval on the unlined portion of the electrode (E) and a recessed portion formed at a regular interval can be formed. The electrode (E) tab can be grounded at the protruding portion of the unlined portion.

[0077] In this regard, if only a single laser irradiation device is used and the laser irradiation is performed only once, there is a problem that the laser penetrates deeply, forming a part where the laser meets the electrode (E) as a surface, thereby damaging the cut part. Conversely, if the laser is transmitted thinly, there is a problem that an uncut part is created, thereby lowering the notching quality.

[0078] In addition, when the notching process is performed twice with different laser depths using only a single laser, the notching time may be excessively extended, which may cause a problem in that the efficiency of the notching process is reduced.

[0079] As a result, the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) are arranged along the transport direction of the electrode (E), and by sequentially irradiating the same point of the electrode (E) with different laser depths, damage to the surrounding part of the notching point can be prevented and the notching quality can be further secured.

[0080] Additionally, since cutting the electrode (E) by passing the laser through it sequentially twice uses the energy used to irradiate the laser more efficiently than cutting the electrode (E) by passing the laser through it once, by sequentially irradiating the laser through the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) in this way, the energy used in the laser notching process can be used more efficiently.

[0081] Hereinafter, a notching device (1) according to another embodiment of the present invention will be described. Any content that overlaps with the content of the notching device (1) according to the embodiment of the present invention described above will be omitted.

[0082] Fig. 6 is a schematic diagram of a notching device (1) according to another embodiment of the present invention, and Fig. 7 is a schematic diagram of a pattern jig (12) according to another embodiment of the present invention.

[0083] Referring to FIGS. 6 and 7, a notching device (1) according to another embodiment of the present invention may further include a pattern jig (12) positioned on the opposite side of the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) with respect to the electrode (E), and forming a path along which the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) irradiate the laser. In other words, the pattern jig (12) may be positioned on the lower side of the electrode (E).

[0084] The pattern jig (12) may include a pattern shape formed so that the laser irradiated from the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) is guided. For example, the pattern jig (12) may have a portion formed with a depression, and the depression-formed portion may be a path along which the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) move.

[0085] Specifically, the pattern jig (12) may include a first path (10a) formed so that the first light source unit (10) moves along and irradiates a laser, and a second path (11a) formed so that the second light source unit (11) moves along and irradiates a laser.

[0086] Since the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) have the same movement pattern, the shape of the first path (10a) and the shape of the second path (11a) can be the same.

[0087] In addition, since the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) move at a certain distance from each other, the shape of the second path (11a) may be a shape in which the shape of the first path (10a) has moved a certain distance.

[0088] The first path (10a) and the second path (11a) may include a first section (R1) formed along the transport direction of the electrode (E), a second section (R2) formed diagonally from one end of the first section (R1), a third section (R3) formed along the transport direction of the electrode (E) from one end of the second section and formed at a further end of the electrode (E) than the first section (R1), and a fourth section (R4) formed diagonally from the third section (R3) and connected to the other end of the first section (R1). In this case, the second section (R2) and the fourth section (R4) may be formed to intersect each other.

[0089] That is, the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) can move sequentially through the first section (R1) to the fourth section (R4), and irradiate the laser toward the electrode (E) while repeatedly cycling through the first section (R1) to the fourth section (R4).

[0090] The position of the pattern jig (12) is fixed, and the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) are positioned above the electrode (E), and a part of the electrode (E) can move between the first light source unit (10) and the second light source unit (11) and the pattern jig (12).

[0091] The above description is merely an example of the technical idea of the present invention, and those skilled in the art will appreciate that various modifications and variations can be made without departing from the essential characteristics of the present invention.

[0092] Accordingly, the embodiments disclosed in the present invention are not intended to limit the technical idea of the present invention but to explain it, and the scope of the technical idea of the present invention is not limited by these embodiments.

In paragraph 1 A notching device further comprising a pattern jig positioned on opposite sides of the first light source unit and the second light source unit with respect to the electrode, and forming a path along which the first light source unit and the second light source unit irradiate the laser.

11. In Article 10 The above pattern jig includes a first path formed so that the first light source unit moves along it and irradiates the laser, and a second path formed so that the second light source unit moves along it and irradiates the laser, The shape of the first path and the shape of the second path are identical to each other, A notching device in which the form of the second path is a form in which the form of the first path is moved a certain distance.

12. In Article 11 The first and second paths above are, A first section formed along the transport direction of the electrode; A second section formed diagonally from one end of the first section; A third section formed along the transport direction of the electrode from one end of the second section and formed at the end of the electrode relative to the first section; and A notching device including a fourth section formed diagonally from the third section and connected to the other end of the first section.

13. In paragraph 12 A notching device in which the first light source unit and the second light source unit sequentially irradiate a laser to create a rough shape on the electrode.

14. In Article 10 A notching device in which the position of the pattern jig is fixed and the first light source unit and the second light source unit are located above the electrode, and a part of the electrode moves between the first light source unit and the second light source unit and the pattern jig.
