Description

Display device for updating display information based on cable type and control method thereof

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a display device and a control method thereof. In particular, the present disclosure relates to a display device that updates display information based on the type of cable and a control method thereof.

[0002] EDID (extended display identification data) and DPCD (displayport configuration data) for display devices supporting DisplayPort are design specifications that enable a source device to identify the operating specifications of a sink device and provide corresponding images. In other words, EDID and DPCD are essential components of a display device.

[0003] A sink device can indicate not only the resolution, color depth, and color space it supports through EDID, but also whether it supports special features such as variable refresh rate (VRR). Therefore, a change in EDID may mean that several of the characteristics of the sink device mentioned above have changed. In addition, DPCD is a register that indicates the characteristics of a sink device that supports DisplayPort. It determines the bit rate and number of lanes of the DisplayPort Main Link that will be formed through link training that is essential when connecting a DisplayPort, and can indicate whether DisplayPort-specific features are supported. In other words, EDID and DPCD indicate the characteristics of the sink device, and a change in EDID and DPCD may mean a change in the basic characteristics that the sink device can support. Therefore, EDID and DPCD must be changed according to the DisplayPort version.

[0004] Additionally, the source device can provide video to the sink device based on both the sink device's capabilities and the cable's capabilities. Since the maximum supported resolution varies depending on the cable's interface version, EDID and DPCD settings must be changed based on the cable's capabilities.

[0005] Previously, EDID and DPCD were changed by selecting the DisplayPort version (1.2 / 1.4) in the OSD (on screen display) menu. In other words, EDID and DPCD were not automatically set according to the interface version supported by the cable. Instead, the user had to determine the DisplayPort version supported by the source device's graphics card or game console and the cable's DisplayPort version, and select the DisplayPort version in the OSD menu accordingly, which was inconvenient.

[0006] Also, if the user does not know the cable version or does not set the DisplayPort version in the OSD menu to correspond to the cable version, the screen may not be displayed. For example, if a source device that supports DisplayPort 1.2 is used and the DisplayPort version in the OSD menu is set to 1.4, the EDID and DPCD of DisplayPort 1.4 may be transmitted, so resolutions that DisplayPort 1.4 supports but DisplayPort 1.2 does not support may not be output. In addition, a compatibility issue may occur due to not being able to handle the EDID and DPCD of DisplayPort 1.4, so the screen may not be displayed at all.

[0007] The recent introduction of DisplayPort 2.1 has further complicated user scenarios. Most cables currently don't support DisplayPort 2.1, making it more likely that consumers will use the wrong cable when using a sink device that supports DisplayPort 2.1.

[0008] Previously, since the EDID and DPCD of the sink device did not automatically change depending on the cable, compatibility issues were likely to occur if the DisplayPort versions supported by the source device, sink device, and cable did not match even one. For example, if a DisplayPort 2.1 source device and a DisplayPort 2.1 sink device are connected using a DisplayPort 1.4 cable, the DisplayPort version in the OSD menu does not automatically change from 2.1 to 1.4, so images with a resolution that has a band width higher than UHBR-10 may not be transmitted from the source device to the sink device. In addition, even if the DisplayPort versions of the source device, sink device, and cable match, if the DisplayPort version in the OSD menu does not change and the DisplayPort version remains at 1.4, a problem may occur where consumers cannot select images with a resolution that can be output using a band width higher than UHBR-10.

[0009] According to one embodiment of the present disclosure for achieving the above object, a display device includes a communication interface, a display, one or more processors connected to the communication interface and the display to control the display device, and a memory configured to store a command, wherein when the command is executed by the one or more processors, when a cable is connected to the communication interface, the display device can identify a communication standard supported by the cable based on a voltage applied to a first pin of the communication interface, set identification information for the display based on the communication standard supported by the cable, and display an image on the display based on the identification information.

[0010] Additionally, the identification information may include EDID (extended display identification data) and DPCD (displayport configuration data) for the display.

[0011] Additionally, when the command is executed by the one or more processors, the display device can identify the cable as a first communication standard if the voltage is 0 V, identify the cable as a second communication standard if the voltage exceeds 0 V and is within a first voltage range, and identify the cable as a third communication standard if the voltage exceeds 0 V and is within a second voltage range that is greater than or wider than the first voltage range.

[0012] And, when the command is executed by the one or more processors, the display device can control the display to display a message indicating that image playback is impossible through the cable when the bit rate of the communication standard supported by the cable is lower than the bit reception rate of the processor.

[0013] Additionally, when the command is executed by the one or more processors, the display device can set the EDID and the DPCD based on a communication standard supported by the cable and a specification of the display.

[0014] And, when the command is executed by the one or more processors, the display device can identify whether the cable is connected to the communication interface through the second pin of the communication interface, and if the cable is identified as being connected to the communication interface, identify the voltage applied to the first pin.

[0015] In addition, when the command is executed by the one or more processors, the display device can control the display to change the EDID and DPCD stored in the memory to EDID and DPCD corresponding to the communication standard supported by the cable, respectively, and display a message guiding the change of the EDID and DPCD.

[0016] And, further including a user interface, when the command is executed by the one or more processors, the display device controls the display to display a message guiding a change of the EDID and DPCD when the EDID and DPCD corresponding to the communication standard supported by the cable are different from the EDID and DPCD stored in the memory, and when a change command is received through the user interface, the EDID and DPCD stored in the memory can be changed to the EDID and DPCD corresponding to the communication standard supported by the cable, respectively.

[0017] Additionally, when the command is executed by the one or more processors, the display device can control the communication interface to transmit a hot plug detect (HPD) signal to the electronic device when the electronic device is identified as being connected through the cable after setting the EDID and the DPCD.

[0018] And, when the command is executed by the one or more processors, the display device can control the communication interface to identify the voltage applied to the first pin, identify a communication standard supported by the cable based on the voltage, set the EDID and the DPCD based on the communication standard supported by the cable, and then transmit an HPD signal to the electronic device when the cable is connected to the communication interface and an electronic device is connected via the cable.

[0019] Additionally, the EDID and the DPCD can be provided to the electronic device through the communication interface based on the connection of the cable.

[0020] Meanwhile, according to one embodiment of the present disclosure, a method for controlling a display device may include, when a cable is connected to a communication interface of the display device, a step of identifying a communication standard supported by the cable based on a voltage applied to a first pin of the communication interface, a step of setting identification information for a display of the display device based on the communication standard supported by the cable, and a step of displaying an image on the display based on the identification information.

[0021] Additionally, the identification information may include EDID (extended display identification data) and DPCD (displayport configuration data) for the display.

[0022] In addition, the identifying step may identify the cable as a cable of a first communication standard if the voltage is 0 V, identify the cable as a cable of a second communication standard if the voltage exceeds 0 V and is within a first voltage range, and identify the cable as a cable of a third communication standard if the voltage exceeds 0 V and is within a second voltage range that is greater than or wider than the first voltage range.

[0023] In addition, if the bit rate of the communication standard supported by the cable is lower than the bit rate of the display device, the method may further include a step of displaying a message indicating that video playback is not possible through the cable.

[0024] According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, a display device includes: a communication interface; a display; one or more processors connected to the communication interface and the display and controlling the display device; and when the command is executed by the one or more processors, the display device can measure a voltage of a first pin of the communication interface based on a cable connected to the communication interface; identify a communication standard supported by the cable based on the voltage applied to the first pin; and control the display to display an image according to a configuration corresponding to the communication standard supported by the cable.

[0025] The configuration can be DPCD (DisplayPort Configuration Data) for the display.

[0026] When the above command is executed by the one or more processors, the display device can: identify the cable as supporting DisplayPort 1.4 based on a voltage of 0V; identify the cable as supporting DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR-10 based on a voltage between 0.33V and 0.50V; and identify the cable as supporting DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR-20 based on a voltage between 0.86V and 1.20V.

[0027] When the above command is executed by the one or more processors, the display device can control the display to display a message indicating that an image cannot be played back through the cable if a bit rate of a communication standard supported by the cable is lower than a bit rate of the one or more processors.

[0028] When the above command is executed by the one or more processors, the display device can set the DPCD based on the communication standard supported by the cable and the specifications of the display.

[0047] Various embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in more detail with reference to the attached drawings below.

[0048] FIG. 1 is a block diagram showing the configuration of a display device (100) according to one embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0049] The display device (100) is a device that displays images, and is a device equipped with a display, such as a TV, desktop PC, laptop, smartphone, tablet PC, etc., and may be referred to as a sink device. Here, the display device (100) is connected to an electronic device referred to as a source device via a cable and can receive images from the electronic device. However, the display device (100) is not limited thereto, and any device capable of displaying images may be used.

[0050] As illustrated in FIG. 1, the display device (100) may include a communication interface (110), a display (120), and a processor (130).

[0051] The communication interface (110) is a configuration that performs communication with various types of external devices according to various types of communication methods. For example, the display device (100) can perform communication with a server or electronic device through the communication interface (110).

[0052] The communication interface (110) may include a Wi-Fi module, a Bluetooth module, an infrared communication module, a wireless communication module, etc. Here, each communication module may be implemented in the form of at least one hardware chip.

[0053] Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules communicate via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, respectively. When using a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth module, connection information, such as the SSID and session key, is first transmitted and received. This information is then used to establish a communication connection before various other information can be transmitted and received. Infrared communication modules use infrared data association (IrDA) technology, which wirelessly transmits data over short distances using infrared light, which lies between visible light and millimeter waves.

[0054] In addition to the above-described communication method, the wireless communication module may include at least one communication chip that performs communication according to various wireless communication standards such as zigbee, 3G (3rd Generation), 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project), LTE (Long Term Evolution), LTE-A (LTE Advanced), 4G (4th Generation), 5G (5th Generation), etc.

[0055] Alternatively, the communication interface (110) may include a wired communication interface such as HDMI, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt, USB, RGB, D-SUB, DVI, etc.

[0056] In addition, the communication interface (110) may include at least one of a LAN (Local Area Network) module, an Ethernet module, or a wired communication module that performs communication using a pair cable, a coaxial cable, or an optical fiber cable.

[0057] The display (120) is a configuration that displays an image and can be implemented as a display of various forms such as an LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), an OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) display, a PDP (Plasma Display Panel), etc. The display (120) may also include a driving circuit, a backlight unit, etc. that can be implemented as a form such as an a-si TFT, an LTPS (low temperature poly silicon) TFT, an OTFT (organic TFT), etc. Meanwhile, the display (120) may be implemented as a touch screen combined with a touch sensor, a flexible display, a 3D display, etc.

[0058] The processor (130) can control the display (120) to display an image.

[0059] The processor (130) controls the overall operation of the display device (100). Specifically, the processor (130) is connected to each component of the display device (100) and can control the overall operation of the display device (100). For example, the processor (130) is connected to components such as a communication interface (110), a display (120), a memory, etc. and can control the operation of the display device (100).

[0060] The one or more processors may include one or more of a CPU, a GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), an APU (Accelerated Processing Unit), a MIC (Many Integrated Core), an NPU (Neural Processing Unit), a hardware accelerator, or a machine learning accelerator. The one or more processors may control one or any combination of other components of the display device (100) and perform operations related to communication or data processing. The one or more processors may execute one or more programs or instructions stored in a memory. For example, the one or more processors may perform a method according to an embodiment of the present disclosure by executing one or more instructions stored in a memory.

[0061] When a method according to an embodiment of the present disclosure includes multiple operations, the multiple operations may be performed by one processor or by multiple processors. For example, when a first operation, a second operation, and a third operation are performed by a method according to an embodiment, the first operation, the second operation, and the third operation may all be performed by the first processor, or the first operation and the second operation may be performed by the first processor (e.g., a general-purpose processor) and the third operation may be performed by the second processor (e.g., an artificial intelligence-specific processor).

[0062] One or more processors may be implemented as a single core processor including one core, or may be implemented as one or more multicore processors including multiple cores (e.g., homogeneous multicore or heterogeneous multicore). When one or more processors are implemented as a multicore processor, each of the multiple cores included in the multicore processor may include internal processor memory, such as cache memory or on-chip memory, and a common cache shared by the multiple cores may be included in the multicore processor. In addition, each of the multiple cores (or some of the multiple cores) included in the multicore processor may independently read and execute a program instruction for implementing a method according to an embodiment of the present disclosure, or all (or some) of the multiple cores may be linked to read and execute a program instruction for implementing a method according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0063] When a method according to an embodiment of the present disclosure includes a plurality of operations, the plurality of operations may be performed by one core among the plurality of cores included in a multi-core processor, or may be performed by the plurality of cores. For example, when a first operation, a second operation, and a third operation are performed by a method according to an embodiment, the first operation, the second operation, and the third operation may all be performed by a first core included in the multi-core processor, or the first operation and the second operation may be performed by a first core included in the multi-core processor, and the third operation may be performed by a second core included in the multi-core processor.

[0064] In embodiments of the present disclosure, one or more processors may mean a system on a chip (SoC) in which at least one processor and other electronic components are integrated, a single-core processor, a multi-core processor, or a core included in a single-core processor or a multi-core processor, wherein the core may be implemented as a CPU, a GPU, an APU, a MIC, an NPU, a hardware accelerator, or a machine learning accelerator, but the embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited thereto. However, for convenience of explanation, the operation of the display device (100) is described below using the expression processor (130).

[0065] When a cable is connected to the communication interface (110), the processor (130) can identify a communication standard supported by the cable based on the voltage applied to the first pin included in the communication interface (110). Here, the communication standard may include a transmission standard, a transmission method, a transmission speed, a transmission type, etc.

[0066] For example, the processor (130) may identify the cable as a cable of the first communication standard if the identified voltage is 0V, identify the cable as a cable of the second communication standard if the identified voltage exceeds 0V and is a voltage within a first voltage range, and identify the cable as a cable of the third communication standard if the identified voltage exceeds 0V and is a voltage within a second voltage range greater than the first voltage range. Here, the cable of the first communication standard may be a cable supporting DisplayPort 1.4 or a cable supporting a lower standard, the cable of the second communication standard may be a cable supporting DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR-10, and the cable of the third communication standard may be a cable supporting DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR-20.

[0067] Cables that support DisplayPort 1.4 and lower standards have no resistor between the CONFIG1 and CONFIG2 pins corresponding to pins 13 and 14, cables that support DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR-10 use a 680kohm resistor between the CONFIG1 and CONFIG2 pins, and cables that support DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR-20 may use a 220kohm resistor between the CONFIG1 and CONFIG2 pins. According to one embodiment, the processor (130) may identify the voltage of the CONFIG2 pin, and if the identified voltage is 0V, the cable may be identified as a cable supporting DisplayPort 1.4 or a cable supporting a lower specification, if the identified voltage is 0.33 to 0.50V (a first voltage range), the cable may be identified as a cable supporting DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR-10, and if the identified voltage is 0.86 to 1.20V (a second voltage range), the cable may be identified as a cable supporting DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR-20. That is, the second voltage range may be higher or wider than the first voltage range.

[0068] The processor (130) can set identification information for the display (120) based on the communication standard supported by the cable. Here, the identification information can include at least one of EDID (extended display identification data) or DPCD (displayport configuration data).

[0069] For example, if the processor (130) identifies the cable as supporting DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR-20, it can change the DisplayPort version of the OSD menu to 2.1 and set the EDID and DPCD corresponding to DisplayPort 2.1. Here, the EDID and DPCD can be provided to the electronic device through the communication interface (110) based on the connection of the cable. The electronic device can be a device connected to the display device (100) through the cable.

[0070] The display device (100) further includes a memory, and the processor (130) can control the display (120) to change the EDID and DPCD stored in the memory to EDID and DPCD corresponding to the communication standard supported by the cable, respectively, and display a message guiding the change of the EDID and DPCD. That is, the processor (130) can automatically change the EDID and DPCD based on the communication standard supported by the cable, and provide a message guiding the change to the user.

[0071] Alternatively, the display device (100) further includes a memory and a user interface, and the processor (130) controls the display (120) to display a message guiding a change of the EDID and DPCD when the EDID and DPCD corresponding to the communication standard supported by the cable are different from the EDID and DPCD stored in the memory, and when a change command is received through the user interface, the EDID and DPCD stored in the memory may be changed to the EDID and DPCD corresponding to the communication standard supported by the cable, respectively. That is, the processor (130) may not automatically change the EDID and DPCD based on the communication standard supported by the cable, but may change the EDID and DPCD after a user's confirmation.

[0072] The processor (130) may set EDID and DPCD based on the communication standard supported by the cable and the specifications of the display (120). For example, if the resolution supported by the display (120) is lower than the resolution supported by the cable according to the communication standard supported by the cable, the processor (130) may set EDID and DPCD based on the specifications of the display (120).

[0073] If the bit rate according to the communication standard supported by the cable is lower than the bit reception rate of the processor (130), the processor (130) can control the display (120) to display a message indicating that image playback is not possible through the cable. For example, if the bit reception rate is 13.5, the processor (130) can set the EDID and DPCD based on 13.5, and the electronic device connected to the display device (100) through the cable can provide an image at a bit rate of 13.5 based on the received EDID and DPCD. However, since the cable has a bit rate of 10, the processor (130) can control the display (120) to display a message indicating that image playback is not possible through the current cable due to a delay in image reception.

[0074] The processor (130) can identify whether the cable is connected to the communication interface (110) through the second pin included in the communication interface (110), and if the cable is identified as being connected to the communication interface (110), can identify the voltage applied to the first pin. That is, the processor (130) can first identify whether the cable is connected, and if the cable is identified as being connected to the communication interface (110), can also identify the voltage applied to the first pin to identify the communication standard supported by the cable.

[0075] After setting EDID and DPCD, if it is identified that an electronic device is connected via a cable, the processor (130) can control the communication interface (110) to transmit an HPD (hot plug detect) signal to the electronic device. That is, if one end of the cable is first connected to the display device (100) and then the other end of the cable is connected to the electronic device, EDID and DPCD may already be set, and the HPD signal may be transmitted to the electronic device without any additional operation.

[0076] Alternatively, when the processor (130) identifies that a cable is connected to the communication interface (110) and that an electronic device is connected via the cable, the processor (130) may control the communication interface (110) to identify a voltage applied to the first pin, identify a communication standard supported by the cable based on the identified voltage, set EDID and DPCD based on the communication standard supported by the cable, and then transmit an HPD signal to the electronic device. That is, when one end of the cable is first connected to the electronic device and then the other end of the cable is connected to the display device (100), the HPD signal may be transmitted to the electronic device before the EDID and DPCD are set, but the processor (130) may delay the transmission time of the HPD signal until after the EDID and DPCD are set.

[0077] However, it is not limited thereto, and the HPD signal may be retransmitted without delaying the transmission time. For example, when the processor (130) identifies that a cable is connected to the communication interface (110) and an electronic device is connected through the cable, the processor (130) may control the communication interface (110) to transmit the HPD signal to the electronic device. Thereafter, the processor (130) may identify the voltage applied to the first pin, identify the communication standard supported by the cable based on the identified voltage, set the EDID and DPCD based on the communication standard supported by the cable, and then control the communication interface (110) to retransmit the HPD signal to the electronic device.

[0078] FIG. 2 is a block diagram showing a detailed configuration of a display device (100) according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The display device (100) may include a communication interface (110), a display (120), and a processor (130). In addition, according to FIG. 2, the display device (100) may further include a memory (140), a user interface (150), a microphone (160), a speaker (170), and a camera (180). For components illustrated in FIG. 2 that overlap with those illustrated in FIG. 1, a detailed description thereof will be omitted.

[0079] Memory (140) may refer to hardware that stores information such as data in an electrical or magnetic form so that the processor (130) or the like can access it. To this end, the memory (140) may be implemented as at least one piece of hardware from among non-volatile memory, volatile memory, flash memory, hard disk drive (HDD), solid state drive (SSD), RAM, ROM, etc.

[0080] The memory (140) may store at least one instruction required for the operation of the display device (100) or the processor (130). Here, the instruction is a code unit that instructs the operation of the display device (100) or the processor (130), and may be written in machine language, which is a language that a computer can understand. Alternatively, the memory (140) may store EDID and DPCD for the display (120).

[0081] The memory (140) may store data in bit or byte units that can represent characters, numbers, images, etc. For example, the memory (140) may store usage history of the display device (100), information about the cooking mode of the display device (100), information about the operating method of the display device (100), etc.

[0082] The memory (140) is accessed by the processor (130), and reading / writing / modifying / deleting / updating instructions, instruction sets, or data can be performed by the processor (130).

[0083] The user interface (150) may be implemented with buttons, a touch pad, a mouse, a keyboard, etc., or may be implemented with a touch screen capable of performing both display and operation input functions. Here, the buttons may be various types of buttons, such as mechanical buttons, touch pads, wheels, etc., formed on any area of the front, side, or back of the main body of the display device (100).

[0084] The microphone (160) is configured to receive sound and convert it into an audio signal. The microphone (160) is electrically connected to the processor (130) and can receive sound under the control of the processor (130).

[0085] For example, the microphone (160) may be formed as an integrated unit integrated into the upper side, front side, side direction, etc. of the display device (100). Alternatively, the microphone (160) may be provided in a remote control separate from the display device (100). In this case, the remote control may receive sound through the microphone (160) and provide the received sound to the display device (100).

[0086] The microphone (160) may include various configurations such as a microphone that collects analog sound, an amplifier circuit that amplifies the collected sound, an A / D conversion circuit that samples the amplified sound and converts it into a digital signal, and a filter circuit that removes noise components from the converted digital signal.

[0087] Meanwhile, the microphone (160) may be implemented in the form of a sound sensor, and any method may be used as long as it has a configuration capable of collecting sound.

[0088] The processor (130) may also receive user commands through a microphone (160).

[0089] The speaker (170) is a component that outputs various audio data processed by the processor (130) as well as various notification sounds and voice messages.

[0090] The processor (130) may also provide various messages to the user through the speaker (170).

[0091] The camera (180) includes a lens, a shutter, an aperture, a solid-state image sensor, an AFE (Analog Front End), and a TG (Timing Generator). The shutter controls the time at which light reflected from a subject enters the camera (180), and the aperture mechanically increases or decreases the size of the opening through which light enters to control the amount of light incident on the lens. When the solid-state image sensor accumulates light reflected from a subject as a photocharge, the image generated by the photocharge is output as an electrical signal. The TG outputs a timing signal for reading out pixel data of the solid-state image sensor, and the AFE samples and digitizes the electrical signal output from the solid-state image sensor.

[0092] As described above, the display device (100) can identify the DisplayPort version of the cable and automatically update EDID and DPCD based on the DisplayPort version, thereby eliminating the inconvenience of the user having to manually change EDID and DPCD.

[0093] Hereinafter, the operation of the display device (100) will be described in more detail with reference to FIGS. 3 to 7. For convenience of explanation, individual embodiments are described in FIGS. 3 to 7. However, the individual embodiments of FIGS. 3 to 7 may be implemented in any combination.

[0094] FIG. 3 is a drawing for explaining the structure of a cable according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. In FIG. 3, for convenience of explanation, an electronic device (200) providing an image is represented as a source device, and a display device (100) receiving an image is represented as a sink device.

[0095] The display device (100) and the electronic device (200) may be connected via a cable (300). The cable (300) may be of DisplayPort 2.1 standard and may include a resistance of 680 kohm when the supported bit rate is UHBR-10, and may include a resistance of 220 kohm when the supported bit rate is UHBR-20.

[0096] In Fig. 3, for convenience of explanation, only the case where the cable (300) includes a resistor is illustrated, but the present invention is not limited thereto. For example, if the cable (300) is of the DisplayPort 1.4 standard or a lower standard, it may be short-circuited without including a resistor at a position corresponding to a resistance of 680 kΩ or a resistance of 220 kΩ in the DisplayPort 2.1 standard.

[0097] When the cable (300) is connected, the CONFIG1 pin is connected to the DP_PWR pin, which is pin 19 of the cable (300), so that voltage can be applied between the CONFIG1 pin and the CONFIG2 pin. The processor (130) can identify the voltage of the CONFIG2 pin using a GPIO (general purpose input / output) pin.

[0098] If the identified voltage is 0V, the processor (130) can identify the cable as a cable supporting DisplayPort 1.4, change the DisplayPort version of the OSD menu to 1.4, and set EDID and DPCD based on DisplayPort version 1.4.

[0099] Alternatively, the processor (130) may identify the cable as a cable supporting DisplayPort 2.1 if the identified voltage is 0.33 to 0.50 V or 0.86 to 1.20 V, change the DisplayPort version in the OSD menu to 2.1, and set the EDID and DPCD based on DisplayPort version 2.1.

[0100] FIG. 4 is a diagram for explaining the transmission process of EDID and DPCD according to one embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0101] In Fig. 4, the interaction through cables between an electronic device as a source device and a display device (100) as a sink device is illustrated in layers. The source device link layer and the sink device link layer are each layers that transmit data between peripheral devices on a network using a physical layer that transmits signals between devices, and address allocation, error detection, etc. can be performed. The source device PHY layer and the sink device PHY layer can each be layers that convert transmission data into physical transmission signals and encode / decode them. EDID and DPCD can be transmitted through each layer.

[0102] When the display device (100) is connected to the cable, an HPD signal can be provided to the TX Link Policy Maker of the electronic device (S410). The TX Link Policy Maker provides a Hot Plug Notice to the Source Stream Policy Maker of the electronic device (S420), and the Source Stream Policy Maker provides a DisplayID or Legacy EDID Read signal to the Sink Stream Policy Maker of the display device (100) (S430), so that the DisplayID or Legacy EDID can be received from the Sink Stream Policy Maker. Until this process is performed, the processor (130) of the display device (100) may have set the EDID and DPCD based on the communication standard supported by the cable.

[0103] However, the present invention is not limited thereto, and the processor (130) may set EDID and DPCD based on the communication standard supported by the cable, and then provide the HPD signal to the electronic device. Alternatively, the processor (130) may provide the HPD signal to the electronic device, set EDID and DPCD based on the communication standard supported by the cable, and then provide the HPD signal to the electronic device again.

[0104] The Source Stream Policy Maker provides Link Inquiry (Stream Ready) to the TX Link Policy Maker (S440), and the TX Link Policy Maker provides a DPCD Read signal to the RX Link Policy Maker of the display device (100) (S450), so that the DPCD can be received from the RX Link Policy Maker.

[0105] Through the above process, the EDID and DPCD of the display device (100) can be provided to the electronic device.

[0106] FIG. 5 is a diagram showing a DisplayPort version according to one embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0107] When a cable is connected to the communication interface (110), the processor (130) can identify (e.g., measure) a voltage applied to a first pin included in the communication interface (110), identify a communication standard supported by the cable based on the identified voltage, set EDID and DPCD for the display (120) based on the communication standard supported by the cable, and control the display (120) to display a message guiding a change of EDID and DPCD (or display an image based on the set EDID and DPCD).

[0108] For example, as illustrated in FIG. 5, when a cable is connected to the communication interface (110), the processor (130) can identify a voltage applied to a first pin included in the communication interface (110), identify the communication standard supported by the cable as the DisplayPort 2.1 standard based on the identified voltage, set EDID and DPCD for the display (120) based on DisplayPort 2.1, and control the display (120) to display a message guiding a change in EDID and DPCD.

[0109] However, it is not limited thereto, and the processor (130) may provide an OSD menu with a screen such as FIG. 5 to provide the user with an option to manually change the DisplayPort version.

[0110] FIG. 6 is a drawing for explaining a case where a communication standard supported by a cable according to one embodiment of the present disclosure is low.

[0111] The processor (130) can control the display (120) to display a message indicating that video playback is not possible through the cable when the bit rate according to the communication standard supported by the cable is lower than the bit reception rate of the processor (130).

[0112] For example, if the communication standard supported by the cable is identified as the DisplayPort 2.1 standard, the processor (130) may set the EDID and DPCD based on the DisplayPort 2.1 standard. Here, the EDID and DPCD may not include the bit transmission rate of the cable, but may include the bit reception rate of 13.5 of the display device (100). In this case, the electronic device may provide the image to the display device (100) based on the bit reception rate of the display device (100). If the cable supports DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR-20, there is no problem, but if the cable supports DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR-10, the image may not be transmitted properly because it is lower than 13.5.

[0113] The processor (130) may identify that the video transmission is delayed and provide a message (610) such as “video playback is not possible through the current cable” as illustrated in FIG. 6.

[0114] FIG. 7 is a diagram guiding changes in EDID and DPCD according to a communication standard supported by a cable according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0115] If the EDID and DPCD corresponding to the communication standard supported by the cable are different from the EDID and DPCD stored in the memory (140), the processor (130) can control the display (120) to display a message guiding a change of the EDID and DPCD.

[0116] For example, as illustrated in FIG. 7, if the EDID and DPCD corresponding to the communication standard supported by the cable are different from the EDID and DPCD stored in the memory (140), the processor (130) may control the display (120) to display a message (710) such as “Do you want to change the EDID and DPCD?”

[0117] When a change command is received through the user interface (150), the processor (130) can change the EDID and DPCD stored in the memory (140) to EDID and DPCD corresponding to the communication standard supported by the cable.

[0118] That is, the processor (130) may set EDID and DPCD based on the communication standard supported by the cable, but may also ask the user whether to change EDID and DPCD.

[0119] The processor (130) may inquire of the user whether to change the EDID and DPCD if the user is identified based on at least one of the sound acquired through the microphone (160) or the captured image acquired through the camera (180). That is, the processor (130) may inquire of the user whether to change the EDID and DPCD if the user's presence is identified, and may automatically change the EDID and DPCD if the user's presence is not identified.

[0120] FIG. 8 is a flowchart for explaining a method for controlling a display device according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0121] First, when a cable is connected to the communication interface of a display device, the communication standard supported by the cable is identified based on the voltage applied to the first pin included in the communication interface (S810). Then, identification information for the display of the display device can be set based on the communication standard supported by the cable (S820).

[0122] Additionally, the identification information may include EDID (extended display identification data) and DPCD (displayport configuration data).

[0123] In addition, the identifying step (S810) may identify the cable as a cable of the first communication standard if the identified voltage is 0 V, identify the cable as a cable of the second communication standard if the identified voltage exceeds 0 V and is a voltage within the first voltage range, and identify the cable as a cable of the third communication standard if the identified voltage exceeds 0 V and is a voltage within a second voltage range greater than the first voltage range. That is, the second voltage range may be higher or wider than the first voltage range.

[0124] In addition, if the bit rate according to the communication standard supported by the cable is lower than the bit rate of the display device, the method may further include a step of displaying a message indicating that video playback is not possible through the cable.

[0125] Additionally, the setting step (S820) can set EDID and DPCD based on the communication standard supported by the cable and the specifications of the display.

[0126] And, it further includes a step of identifying whether the cable is connected to the communication interface through a second pin included in the communication interface, and the identifying step (S810) can identify the voltage applied to the first pin when the cable is identified as being connected to the communication interface.

[0127] In addition, the setting step (S820) may further include a step of changing the EDID and DPCD stored in the display device to EDID and DPCD corresponding to the communication standard supported by the cable, respectively, and the control method may further include a step of displaying a message guiding the change of the EDID and DPCD.

[0128] And, in the setting step (S820), if the EDID and DPCD corresponding to the communication standard supported by the cable are different from the EDID and DPCD stored in the display device, a message guiding a change of the EDID and DPCD is displayed, and when a change command is received, the EDID and DPCD stored in the display device can be changed to the EDID and DPCD corresponding to the communication standard supported by the cable, respectively.

[0129] Additionally, after setting the EDID and DPCD, if it is identified that an electronic device is connected via a cable, the step of transmitting a hot plug detect (HPD) signal to the electronic device may be further included.

[0130] And, the identifying step (S810) may further include a step of identifying a voltage applied to a first pin when a cable is connected to a communication interface and an electronic device is identified as being connected via the cable, and the control method may further include a step of setting EDID and DPCD based on a communication standard supported by the cable, and then transmitting an HPD signal to the electronic device.

[0131] Additionally, EDID and DPCD can be provided to electronic devices via a communication interface based on the cable connection.

[0132] According to various embodiments of the present disclosure as described above, the display device can identify the DisplayPort version of the cable and automatically update the EDID and DPCD based on the DisplayPort version, thereby eliminating the inconvenience of the user having to manually change the EDID and DPCD.
