Abstract
Description
[0001] COSMETIC COMPOSITION COMPRISING RUBBER SEED OIL
[0002] Field of the Invention
[0003] This invention relates to cosmetic oil compositions, preferably hair or scalp oil compositions. More particularly the invention relates to cosmetic oil compositions that comprise rubber seed oil and a volatile hydrocarbon.
[0004] Background of the Invention
[0005] Almost all organisms and tissues utilize a lipid barrier for protection from the external environment. Skin surface lipids can be categorized as sebaceous lipids and extracellular lipids based on their origin and composition. Sebaceous lipids are secreted from sebaceous glands and form a layer of hydrolipidic film together with sweat secreted by sweat glands. These components moisturize the skin, prevent moisture loss, and resist harm from foreign matters. The main lipid components include squalene, triglycerides, free fatty acids, wax esters, cholesterol, and cholesteryl ester. Extracellular lipids mainly refer to lipids among stratum corneum, mainly including ceramides, free fatty acids, and cholesterol. Lamellar bodies eventually released lipids precursors and lipid synthases into extracellular spaces of stratum corneum, and then, the lipids precursors were catalyzed by the lipid synthases to produce extracellular lipids.
[0006] In the daily life, the skin / scalp and hair are exposed to many pollutants, the surface lipids on skin / scalp and hair is easily oxidized. Especially in the process of hair dying, the hair or scalp contacts with hydrogen peroxide which may cause the oxidation of lipids.
[0007] Rubber latex and its seed oil show many potentials in various biological activities such as antifungal, antioxidant, antimelanogenesis as well as a biomaterial in relation to angiogenesis. The antioxidant property of seed oils is a source of some applications such as the preservation of food products and the prevention of diseases related to oxidative stress, such as cancer and cardiovascular disorders. Previous studies have showed that the unsaturated fatty acid composition of rubber seed oil has biological activity and thus qualifies it for use in cosmetics.
[0008] There remains a need to provide a composition delivering improved lipids protection efficacy onto the surface of skin / scalp and hair, upon applying the products. The inclusion of such oil composition would compromise the volume of the hair. There also remains a need to improve the hair volume while delivering desired scalp / hair benefit.
[0009] The present inventors have now found unexpectedly that the combination of rubber seed oil and a volatile hydrocarbon with specific weight ratio can provide improved lipid protection efficacy onto a topical surface of a human or animal body, preferably on skin / scalp and hair, while delivering desired sensory, which is preferably improved hair volume.
[0010] Summary of the Invention

[0016] Detailed Description of the Invention
[0017] By ‘a cosmetic composition’ as used herein, is meant to include a composition for topical application to skin, hair and / or scalp of mammals, especially human beings. Such a composition is generally applied on to the desired topical surface of the body for a period of time from a few seconds to up to 24 hours. When the period of time of application is low say of the order of a few seconds to a few minutes after which the composition is rinsed off with water or wiped away, such a composition is known as a cleansing composition or a wash-off composition. On the other hand, When the composition is applied for longer period of time say from several minutes to up to 24 hours and washed off usually during the process of normal personal cleaning, such a composition is known as a leave-on composition. The composition as per the present invention includes any product applied to a human body for also improving appearance, cleansing, odor control or general aesthetics.

[0062] Examples
[0063] Example 1
[0064] The Example demonstrated that the combination of rubber seed oil and a specific volatile hydrocarbon can provide improved protection for surface lipids against oxidation.
[0065] Test method
[0066] 0.024g squalene was added in 250mL hexanes to prepare 96 ppm squalene solution. The test was performed in a 12-well plate. 1mL prepared squalene solution was added to each well, and the plate was placed in fume hood at room temperature for 30 minutes to allow the hexane solvent to evaporate to dry. Then 4pL rubber seed oil (XISHUANGBANNA HUAKIIN BIOLOGICAL TECHNOLOGY CO. LTD) was added to two of the wells respectively. And 400pL rubber seed oil and CetiolOultimate (BASF) mixture (rubber seed oil : CetiolOultimate = 1 : 99 (vol:vol), and the weight ratio of CetiolOultimate to rubber seed oil is 80:1) was added to other two of wells respectively. The plate was placed in fume hood at room temperature for another 30 minutes to allow volatile matter to evaporate. After that, 200pL 30% H2O2 was added to four wells respectively and reacted for two days.
[0067] After 2-day reaction, 1 mL hexane was added to these four wells respectively to extract residual squalene, the extraction for each well was repeated for 3 times. For each well, the extraction solutions were merged and tested on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC, Waters ACQUITY UPLC-PDA) to quantify the residue of squalene.
[0068] The observations for average residual of squalene are summarised in Table-1.
[0069] Table-1 The observations tabulated in Tables 1 clearly indicate that Sample 1-the combination of rubber seed oil and specific volatile hydrocarbon with weight ratio within the scope of the present invention can deliver better protection of squalene against oxidation compared to control, thus demonstrating the advantage.
[0070] As far as the experiments were concerned, the concentrations of the ingredients were chosen to fall within the allowable limits permitted by the concerned tests and in which it was possible to record the technical effects. Therefore, the concentrations at which the tests were conducted might not appear to fall within the range in which such ingredients are generally used in cosmetic compositions (usually in wt%).
[0071] Example 2
[0072] The composition in accordance with the present invention deliver desired sensory benefit which is hair volume boosting.
[0073] The compositions indicated in Table-2 were prepared. All ingredients are expressed by weight percent of the total composition, and as level of active ingredient.
[0074] Table-2
[0075] Test method
[0076] Hair volume test: Hair switches were washed with 14%SLES solution twice to remove any deposited residue and dried at 25 °C for 24 hours. The photos of hair switch were taken in the hair volume cabinet (5532-8166, ETS INC.). And the volume area in the photo will be calculated automatically by Switch Volume Rig software as base volume (initial data a.).
[0077] Then the hair switches were washed with 14%SLES solution and the water on the hair switches was absorbed with paper gently. The hair switches were applied with each sample (0.2ml / switch) and dried at 25 °C overnight. Then the hair volume was measured in the same way and calculated as after treatment volume (data b.). Boosted volume was calculated by c=b-a. Each sample was repeated with 3 times.
[0078] The result of hair volume test is summarized in Table-3.
[0079] Table-3 It can be concluded from the results that the compositions of the present invention (Sample 2-7) can enhance hair volume, compared to Sample B-D (outside the scope of the present invention).
