Abstract
Description
Multiport adapters and methods for controlling power supply in electronic devices and multiport adapters
[0001] Various embodiments of the present disclosure relate to multiport adapters and electronic devices.
[0002] Typically, an adapter is a device that converts a given input power source into the required voltage and supplies it. Recently, multiport adapters (MPAs) have become widely used, featuring multiple ports (or connectors) of various shapes and sizes, enabling the connection of electronic devices from different manufacturers.
[0003] A multiport adapter may have multiple ports, each of which is connected to an electronic device (or host electronic device) (e.g., a laptop, a smart phone, or other electronic device), a power supply (e.g., a power supply, a travel adapter, or other power supply), and a peripheral device (e.g., a USB memory card, an auxiliary storage device, an auxiliary battery, or other peripheral device). The multiport adapter may be connected to the power supply through one of the multiple ports, and may reserve a portion of the power received from the power supply as power required to operate the multiport adapter (e.g., reserve power or rated power) and allocate the remaining power to each port.
[0004] The reserve power of a multiport adapter can be fixed to the maximum power available to the multiport adapter (or the maximum rated power). If the reserve power is fixed to the maximum power available to the multiport, the power provided to the electronic device may be reduced due to the reserve power of the surplus power that is not actually used by the multiport, which may be inefficient. For example, if the multiport adapter supplies power to the host electronic device using the power received from the power supply, and the rated power of the power supply is less than the sum of the rated power of the multiport adapter (i.e., the reserve power) and the rated power of the electronic device, the electronic device may receive less power than the rated power. If the electronic device receives less power from the multiport adapter than the rated power of the electronic device, it may use power from the battery to maintain the rated power of the electronic device, which may cause the battery to discharge while receiving power. If the electronic device receives less power due to the large reserve power of the multiport adapter when charging using the power provided by the multiport adapter, the charging speed may be slow. Meanwhile, when the reserve power of the multiport adapter is fixed, the ratio of the input power input to the electronic device to the rated power (or supplied power) of the power supply may decrease as the rated power of the power supply and the rated power of the electronic device are lower. For example, when the reserve power of the multiport adapter is fixed at 15W, if the rated power (or supplied power) of the power supply is 100W and the rated power of the electronic device is 100W, the power input to the electronic device may be 85W, and the ratio of the rated power of the electronic device to the input power may be 85%. However, if the rated power of the power supply is 30W and the rated power of the electronic device is 30W, the power input to the electronic device may be 15W, and the ratio of the rated power of the electronic device to the input power may decrease to 50%.
[0005] According to one embodiment, a multiport adapter and a method for controlling power supply in a multiport adapter can be provided, which can efficiently supply power to an electronic device by adjusting (or reducing) the size of the reserve power of the multiport adapter according to the actual power used in the multiport adapter, rather than fixing the size of the reserve power of the multiport adapter to the maximum power available in the multiport.
[0006] A multiport adapter according to an embodiment may include a power connection port, a host connector, at least one peripheral connection port, a power supply circuit, and a controller. The controller according to an embodiment may identify a first power to be provided to an electronic device connected through the host connector based on power input from a power device connected through the power connection port. The controller according to an embodiment may adjust reserve power based on the identified first power and power consumption of the at least one peripheral connection port. The controller according to an embodiment may identify a second power to be provided to the electronic device connected through the host connector based on the first power, power consumption of the at least one peripheral port, and the adjusted reserve power. The controller according to an embodiment may be configured to provide the second power to the electronic device through the host connector.
[0007] In one embodiment, a method for controlling power supply in a multiport adapter may include an operation of identifying a first power to be provided to an electronic device connected through a host connector based on power input from a power device connected through a power connection port. In one embodiment, the method may include an operation of adjusting reserve power based on the identified first power and power consumption of the at least one peripheral device connection port. In one embodiment, the method may include an operation of identifying a second power to be provided to an electronic device connected through a host connector based on the first power, power consumption of the at least one peripheral device port, and the adjusted reserve power. In one embodiment, the method may include an operation of providing the identified second power to the electronic device through the host connector.
[0008] An electronic device according to an embodiment may include a battery, an input port, a power delivery integrated chip (PDIC), a charging circuit, and a processor. The processor according to an embodiment may be configured to identify a first power that can be input from a multiport adapter connected through the input port. The processor according to an embodiment may be configured to transmit a reserve power reduction request signal to the multiport adapter using the PDIC based on the reserve power reduction identification of the multiport adapter. The processor according to an embodiment may be configured to identify a second power to be input from the multiport adapter in response to the transmission of the reserve power reduction request signal, and receive the second power.
[0009] In an embodiment, a method of operating an electronic device may include an operation of identifying a first power to be input from a multiport adapter connected through an input port. In an embodiment, the method may include an operation of transmitting a reserve power reduction request signal to the multiport adapter based on the reserve power reduction identification of the multiport adapter. In an embodiment, the method may include an operation of identifying a second power to be input from the multiport adapter in response to the transmission of the reserve power reduction request signal. In an embodiment, the method may include an operation of receiving the second power from the multiport adapter.
[0010] According to an embodiment, a method for operating an electronic device connected to a multiport adapter may include providing first power to the electronic device using power input from a power supply connected through a power connection port when the multiport adapter is connected to the electronic device. According to an embodiment, the method may include transmitting a reserve power reduction request signal to the multiport adapter through a configuration channel (CC) communication or a programmable power supply (PPS) communication when a state of charge of a battery of the electronic device using a charging circuit of the electronic device is a discharge state or a fast charge state in which the first power received from the multiport adapter is less than the power consumption of the electronic device. According to an embodiment, the method may include adjusting reserve power based on the power and the power consumption of at least one peripheral device connection port in response to receiving the reserve power reduction request signal, and providing second power to the electronic device based on the power, the power consumption of the at least one peripheral device port, and the adjusted reserve power. According to an embodiment, the method may include an operation in which the electronic device receives the second power from the multiport adapter.
